Role Of Kif4a In The Fxa-Induced Phenotypic Modulation Of Pleural Mesothelial Cells, Sudishna Khanal
Role Of Kif4a In The Fxa-Induced Phenotypic Modulation Of Pleural Mesothelial Cells, Sudishna Khanal
Biotechnology Theses
Pleural injuries can disrupt the organization of the pleural surface, leading to pleural remodeling and fibrosis (PF), characterized by the proliferation of myofibroblasts expressing alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and the deposition of extracellular matrix proteins, primarily due to the mesenchymal transition of pleural mesothelial cells (PMCs) (MesoMT). It is well established that various external stimuli, such as TGF-β, thrombin, and factor Xa (FXa), induce MesoMT. Our laboratory found that myocardin, a transcriptional co-activator, was dramatically up-regulated during MesoMT, and that gene silencing of myocardin (MyoCD) diminished MesoMT. RNA sequencing data showed that FXa activated a set of genes not upregulated …
The Legacy Of Lead: Lead Exposure's Harmful Effects And Its Concentration In Poc Communities, Layla Sophronia Barber
The Legacy Of Lead: Lead Exposure's Harmful Effects And Its Concentration In Poc Communities, Layla Sophronia Barber
Student Theses 2015-Present
This thesis examines the disproportionate burden of lead exposure carried by low income, POC communities. The systemic nature of this problem is a symptom of a longstanding legacy of environmental injustice in the United States. Decades of federal neglect are reflected in the higher statistics of lead exposure and poisoning in predominantly black communities. While it is understood that lead exposure poses a serious threat to physical health and early cognitive development, there is a discouraging lack of urgency to remove the toxin from non-wealthy communities. The material covered by this thesis aims to identify and correct the discriminatory social …

A Sturdy Future: Mangrove Restoration Against Climate Extremes, Gabriella Marie Siasoco
A Sturdy Future: Mangrove Restoration Against Climate Extremes, Gabriella Marie Siasoco
Student Theses 2015-Present
This paper addresses the impacts of climate change on natural disasters and examines how rehabilitation of mangrove forests in Mesoamerica and the Caribbean can mitigate those effects. Rising ocean and atmospheric temperatures contribute to higher sea levels and more severe hurricanes and tropical storms, characterized by increased frequency, duration, and intensity in peak winds, storm surges, and rainfall. Mangrove ecosystems act as vital buffers against coastal disturbances such as tsunamis and extreme storms, while contributing to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration. Additionally, they improve water quality by filtering nutrients, preventing eutrophication. Despite their ecological and economic value, mangroves in …

Associations Between Levels Of Physical Activity And Cognitive Health, Gemma Goldenbaum
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between physical activity levels and executive function, specifically focusing on inhibitory control and working memory capacity. Though the benefits of exercise on brain health are well-documented, the extent of cognitive differences between sedentary individuals and elite student-athletes remains misunderstood. Eighty participants (ages 18–35) were categorized via the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) into sedentary, low, and advanced activity tiers. Participants completed computational assessments, including the Operation Span (OSPAN) task for working memory and Go/No-Go tasks to measure response inhibition and implicit associations. Preliminary results indicated significant differences in sedentary behavior, …
Bio 340 Final Project: Effects Of Zoning On Fish Density Along The Great Barrier Reef, Mary Lamoriello
Bio 340 Final Project: Effects Of Zoning On Fish Density Along The Great Barrier Reef, Mary Lamoriello
Biology Student Scholarship
Mary Lamoriello - Environmental Biology '27
Over the years, there have been many marine parks and restricted fishing zones established along the Great Barrier Reef to maintain biodiversity and coral health. The goal of these zones is to create an ”undisturbed” area, where species can flourish. Many different species reside in this reef and play important ecological roles. Parrotfish help maintain coral health by grazing on algae, and the presence of carnivores often indicate a diverse and healthy ecosystem. This project aims to examine the differences in species distribution between zones along the Magnetic Island, by looking at carnivorous and …

Bio 340 Final Project: Rural Population Structure And Food Production Interact To Shape Global Undernourishment, Ava Ripanti
Biology Student Scholarship
Ava Ripanti - Environmental Biology '27
Undernourishment remains a major global public health challenge, reflecting the proportion of a population lacking sufficient dietary energy intake. While food availability is central to food security, undernourishment is also shaped by structural and socioeconomic factors such as population distribution and access to resources. Although rural populations are closely tied to agriculture, they often experience higher food insecurity due to limited infrastructure, market access, and healthcare. Prior research emphasizes that broader determinants, particularly inequality and development, are stronger predictors of undernourishment than agricultural output alone, that food insecurity exists in both rural and urban …

Cael Schneider - Environmental Biology ‘28
Artificial light at night (light pollution) is an increasing consequence of urbanization and can disrupt nocturnal wildlife. Bats are especially susceptible, as they rely on dark skies for navigation, predator avoidance, and foraging. The effects of artificial light may vary among species due to differences in foraging strategies, habitat use, and light tolerance. Previous research has documented negative effects of artificial light on bat foraging, roosting, breeding, and hibernation. However, some species, such as red bats, may forage near artificial lights where insects are abundant. Species including the big brown bat, hoary bat, and …

Adam Garies - Environmental Biology ‘28
European energy systems have undergone rapid transformation over the past two decades, with countries adopting different strategies to reduce carbon emissions. This divergence is particularly evident between Germany and France. Following the Fukushima disaster in 2011, Germany accelerated its nuclear phase-out, while France has declared its commitment to nuclear energy. Nuclear energy however, is an important step towards reducing carbon emissions. Excluding nuclear energy from energy plans will lead to a rise in reliance on potent fossil fuels like coal and natural gas, resulting in greater carbon emissions, even with an emphasis on expanding …

Enhanced matrix assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (eMALDI MS) refers to MALDI MS in which the efficacy of desorption and ionization is enhanced by heat, volatile species, or both, generated from chemical decomposition of additives in the sample of analyte under MALDI conditions. MALDI MS has been widely used for oligonucleotide (ON) analysis. However, two challenges, limited ability to analyze long ONs and low tolerance to trace salts, significantly restrict its applications. We recently proposed the ion pair thermal model for the gas phase ion formation mechanism of MALDI MS. This model predicts an exponential increase in ion yield …
Photo Identification On Interactions Between Tursiops Trucatus And Humans To Promote The Importance Of Sustainability, Julia Bronneberg
Photo Identification On Interactions Between Tursiops Trucatus And Humans To Promote The Importance Of Sustainability, Julia Bronneberg
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
The Mediterranean Sea is one of the most biodiverse regions, and especially around the Maltese islands, a popular tourist destination where people come to enjoy the beautiful weather and blue waters. Because bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are the most common species people see in coastal areas, they are the primary focus of this research. We care about these bottlenose dolphins because they cannot protect themselves if we are the ones accidentally causing them harm. This study starts from the belief that if we cannot protect the ocean and marine life, then we cannot protect ourselves. We use many resources that …
Soil Conditions Impacting Geothermal Plant Communities In Yellowstone National Park, Karina Nordwald
Soil Conditions Impacting Geothermal Plant Communities In Yellowstone National Park, Karina Nordwald
Honors Theses
Soil acts as the foundation for a productive and functioning environment, by supporting plant life. Abiotic factors drive soil health and consequently influence vegetation. Geothermal activity affects vegetation through strong environmental filters from harsh conditions. Hydrothermal features in Yellowstone National Park represent a variety of naturally occurring extreme environments, where each hot spring ranges in temperature, pH, and overall chemical composition. This study investigates how these environmental drivers dictate vegetation communities, by focusing on the transition zones between geothermal activity and distance from the feature that moves toward increasingly “favorable” environments. By observing a variety of features throughout Yellowstone, we …

Life Histories Of Two Sgcn Procambarus Species In East Texas, Mckenzie A. Adkins
Biology Theses
Within freshwater systems, crayfish play notable roles by shaping habitats and linking food web levels. Yet even with such influence, knowledge about numerous species is incomplete, which hinders protection strategies. Found only in the Neches River basin in eastern Texas, Procambarus nechesae and Procambarus nigrocinctus have different conservation statuses, mainly because data on their life history remains sparse. These two species are not closely related and are analyzed independently in this study. Research into traits tied to survival and environmental preferences was carried out so that informed decisions on conservation efforts can be made for these species. The goal of …

A slew of artificial reefs can be seen dotting the Gulf of America. Some result from catastrophic shipwrecks and others from construction dumping; however, all provide an opportunity for the development of marine ecosystems. The question of how artificial reefs effect local fish populations is an expansive concept extremely hard to simplify down to a basic relationship. The development of reefs is a delicate process taking place over many years of growth. Previous studies utilized a combination of resources like theoretical models, field data and comparisons to natural reefs to study how these artificial …

Debriefing In Emergency Departments And Intensive Care Units To Combat Compassion Fatigue, Madison N. Chiolino
ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present
Compassion fatigue can be associated with nurses working in increased stressful environments such as the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Emergency Room (ER). There is a gap in healthcare facilities, where structured interventions like debriefing tools are not implemented to address compassion fatigue. The purpose of this study was to determine if implementing a debriefing tool in areas where nurses are placed in high stress scenarios such as the intensive care unit and emergency department can aid in combating compassion fatigue. A piloted quantitative pre-and post-survey intervention design was used. Data was collected using the ProQOL 5 and PEARLS debriefing …
Impacts Of Salinity On Microbial Enzyme Activity In Coastal Waters, Natali Ariyoshi
Impacts Of Salinity On Microbial Enzyme Activity In Coastal Waters, Natali Ariyoshi
Honors Theses
Microbial extracellular enzymes are critical for the breakdown of organic matter and nutrient cycling in aquatic ecosystems. Extracellular enzyme activity serves as an indicator of nutrient turnover rates, metabolic states, and nutrient limitations within an ecosystem. Coastal ecosystems are especially dynamic as the influx of freshwater from inland runoff or seawater intrusion from storm surges can lead to fluctuations in salinity which can restructure microbial communities and alter enzymatic activity. Despite the ecological significance of these changes, few studies have explored the effects of short-term salinity shifts on microbial extracellular enzyme activity in coastal waters. This study investigated the effects …

Effects Of Increased Salinity On Mississippi Coast Bacterial Community Composition And Diversity, Clifton C. Wade
Honors Theses
Bacterial communities are important to ecosystem function in coastal environments, but the response of these communities to short term increased salinity conditions is understudied. This study utilized a microcosm setup to investigate the response of coastal seawater bacterial communities to three treatments: an unamended seawater control, a reference treatment that received reverse osmosis (RO) water, and an elevated salinity treatment that received artificial seawater dissolved in RO water. Microcosms were sampled four times over a five-day period to analyze the effects of time under different salinity conditions on the seawater bacterial community. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to analyze …

The use of mobile dataloggers to gather proximity data has generated novel insights into the social network structure of animals. The performance of mobile dataloggers may be impacted by different environmental and social conditions. Thus, validation studies that account for species-specific habitat use and behavior are essential. We conducted a series of validation studies of two brands of mobile dataloggers (Gipsy6, Technosmart, Italy; ProxLog, IoSA, Belgium) on the semi-fossorial rodent, Octodon degus. First, we determined the sensitivity of both types of dataloggers to track position and closeness in different habitats (Experiments 1 and 2). To determine if the structure …

Service-Learning In Adapted Physical Activity: Student Experiences With And Without Course Integration, Courtney Jost, Nicole Fiscella Nicole Fiscella, Roxanne Bahn-Bales, Tze-Hsuan Wang, Jennifer Beamer, Jennifer Taylor, Willie Chun Wai Leung
Educational Practices in Kinesiology
Service-learning is widely used in adapted physical activity/education (APA/APE) courses to enhance student learning through community engagement. However, limited research has explored how the presence or absence of an APA/APE course influences students’ perceived learning, confidence, and engagement in inclusive physical activity settings. This quasi-experimental, cross-sectional study examined how course-enhanced and purely experiential models of a university-based APA service-learning program, PA PALS, shaped undergraduate students’ experiences. Students (N = 58) participated; 41.4% (n = 24) were concurrently enrolled in an APA/APE course (course-enhanced group), while 58.6% (n = 34) participated as volunteers (purely experiential group). A validated …

Studying More, Not Less: Rethinking Test Anxiety In Undergraduate Biology Courses, Kailey E. Reeves
Honors Theses
This study investigates the relationships among test anxiety, study behaviors, and metacognitive evaluation in undergraduate biology courses. While prior research has established that study strategies and metacognition influence academic performance, less is known about how these factors interact with test anxiety in undergraduate Biology courses. Guided by the student approaches to learning (SAL) and metacognition frameworks, this study examines whether test anxiety is associated with the type and number of study strategies students use, as well as their ability to evaluate their own learning and preparedness. Using a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, data was collected from 205 students enrolled in …
Neurophysiological Signatures Of Perceived Control In The Human Brain: An Electroencephalography Study, Megan Staehling
Neurophysiological Signatures Of Perceived Control In The Human Brain: An Electroencephalography Study, Megan Staehling
Honors Theses
Perceived control is defined as the belief that one’s actions can influence the outcomes in the environment. It plays an important role in decision-making, motivation, and emotional regulation. Previous studies suggest that perceived control shapes how the brain processes both reward and punishment stimuli. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this process are still unclear. The present study examined the neurophysiological correlates of perceived control during a decision-making task. Electroencephalography (EEG) was used to record the neural activity of twenty-nine undergraduate students while they completed the Choice Task. Participants associated visual cues with different levels of control over trials involving monetary …
Bax Activation Through The N-Terminal Bh3-Like Domains Of Vdac1 And Vdac2, Autumn A. Peters
Bax Activation Through The N-Terminal Bh3-Like Domains Of Vdac1 And Vdac2, Autumn A. Peters
Honors Theses
Voltage-dependent anion channels (VDACs) are central to mitochondrial function by mediating metabolite diffusion across the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM). Two isoforms, VDACs 1 and 2, are also implicated in apoptosis based on interactions with Bcl-2 family proteins that control this process, including Bax and Bcl-xL. Activation of the pro-apoptotic protein Bax by interaction with ‘BH3-only’ proteins, such as Bim or Bid, induces MOM permeabilization to signal apoptosis, yet accumulating evidence indicates VDACs 1 and 2 may also affect Bax. We discovered that the VDAC N-terminal domains contain high sequence similarity to the conserved BH3 domains within Bcl-2 family members that …
A Survey Of Lichen Native To Three Of Mississippi’S National Forests, William S. Granberry Iii
A Survey Of Lichen Native To Three Of Mississippi’S National Forests, William S. Granberry Iii
Honors Theses
Lichens are a major part of the environment for telling the air quality and the impact humans have on the environment. These signs go into how many species of lichen are present in a general area, and there has been a lack of a list of lichens that call Mississippi their home. The goal of this research is to help create this list through a survey of lichen in three of Mississippi’s National Forests: DeSoto, Homochitto, and Holly Springs. These three forests are ideal because they cover differing ecosystems and are in different parts of the state, heightening the chance …
Mechanisms Underlying Diversity In Bacterial Biofilms, Jacob David Holt
Mechanisms Underlying Diversity In Bacterial Biofilms, Jacob David Holt
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Bacteria commonly exist in natural environments as communities of multiple strains and species attached to surfaces and encased in an extracellular matrix of DNA, protein, and polysaccharides–termed biofilms. These biofilms contribute to diverse functions, from ocean carbon cycling via chitin degradation to pathogenic processes such as wound or implant colonization. The molecular mechanisms governing biofilm formation and composition have been well characterized in model pathogenic organisms, yet the extent to which aspects of biofilm formation contribute to the assembly and maintenance of diverse communities remains less well understood. Using microfluidics, confocal microscopy, and model biofilm-forming bacteria, this thesis details how …

Windows Of Developmental Susceptibility To Tetrahydrocannabivarin (Thcv) Reveal Stage-Dependent Morphological And Biological Effects, Mirielle Clayton
Honors Theses
Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), a minor cannabinoid found in Cannabis sativa, is gaining attention for its potential therapeutic applications, yet its effects on early development remain poorly understood. This study investigated how the timing of THCV exposure influences morphological, behavioral, and bioaccumulation outcomes in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. Embryos were exposed to 2 μM THCV during discrete developmental windows (6–30, 30–54, 54–78, 78–102) and continuous 6–102 hours post-fertilization (hpf), designed to model early stages of human gestation. Behavioral analysis using a larval photomotor response assay revealed significant reductions in locomotor activity during dark phases, with the strongest hypoactivity observed …
Evolution Of Nematode Prey Chemotaxis Behavior Across Different Environments, Hailey R. Smith
Evolution Of Nematode Prey Chemotaxis Behavior Across Different Environments, Hailey R. Smith
Honors Theses
Climatic conditions in the near future are projected to be warmer, with more frequent and intense weather events. This will substantially alter the environments in which organisms must integrate specific information to find essential resources. Many organisms rely upon chemical signals to orient towards attractive resources through a mechanism called chemotaxis. How different environmental conditions, like temperature, impact this process will be important to understand as environments change. I conducted a laboratory evolution experiment with the model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to see how success in chemotaxis assays changes over time when selected under different temperature regimes (normal laboratory temperature, increased …
