Optimal Foraging In A Uniform Habitat: The Search Mechanism Of The Green Lacewing, Alan B. Bond Jan 1980

Optimal Foraging In A Uniform Habitat: The Search Mechanism Of The Green Lacewing, Alan B. Bond

Alan Bond Publications

The effects of food deprivation and prey contact on the components of searching behavior in larval green lacewings (Chrysopa carnea Stephens) were examined to test the applicability of optimal foraging theory to predation in a uniform habitat. Variation in foraging intensity was primarily the result of changes in the meander. Modulation of the response to prey contact with increasing deprivation involved changes in the velocity and the response persistence and suggested the occurrence of adaptation to inferred differences in the spatial distribution of the prey. The ratio of giving-up times at different levels of deprivation was in accordance with …

The Effect Of Walk Or Jog Recovery From Anaerobic Work On Blood Lactate Levels And Subsequent Two-Minute Run Performance, Rick Alan Livesey

Masters Theses

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of a walk or jog recovery on two-minute run performances and the concentrations of blood lactate.

Eight highly trained male subjects were selected from the Eastern Illinois University Track Team. The test procedure consisted of two, maximal two-minute runs on the track for distance, separated by a 30-minute recovery. The recovery consisted of a walk at 20-minutes per mile pace or a jog at 7½ to 8 minutes per mile pace. Venous blood samples were drawn three minutes after the first run, two minutes prior to the second run, and …

Effects Of Electromagnetic Fields On The Visually Evoked Response In The Visual Cortex, Arni Holm Jan 1980

Effects Of Electromagnetic Fields On The Visually Evoked Response In The Visual Cortex, Arni Holm

Dissertations

Problem. This study sought to determine if electromagnetic fields affect the visually evoked response of the visual cortex. From the fact that nerve impulses are propagated by the motions of electrically charged ions, the question arose whether the presence of an external electromagnetic field might affect either the propagation of nerve impulses traveling through the optical nerve pathway or the functioning of the visual cortex itself.

Method. Evoked responses were produced in the visual cortex of cats by visual stimulation (light flashes). Surface electrodes, located at the visual cortex (and connected to a preamplifier and an oscilloscope) detectedthe evoked responses …

Causality, Determinism, And The Mind-Brain Problem, Jeffrey C. Schank Jan 1980

Causality, Determinism, And The Mind-Brain Problem, Jeffrey C. Schank

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The problem of causality, determinism, and mind and brain are discussed, and new solutions are offered. To begin, a pragmatic structuralism is assumed, asserting the functional equivalence of mind and brain activity. A problem-solving model of mind-brain activity is defined, employing the mathematical theory of probablistic automata. With this model it can be determined whether mind-brain activity is deterministic. This is accomplished if an adequate definition of strict causality is developed. Logical models of strict causality which define the causal relation in terms of "material implication" or "strict implication" are rejected. Causal relativity is assumed, and certain systemtheoretical assumptions are …

The Idea Of Technological Progress And Its Problems, Eugene E. Selk Jan 1980

The Idea Of Technological Progress And Its Problems, Eugene E. Selk

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Recently the problem of scientific progress has been one of the most widely discussed topics among historians and philosophers of science. But little has been said on the problem of technological progress. I suggest that theories of technological progress can be divided, first, into cognitive and non-cognitive; then cognitive can be subdivided into cumulative and problem-solving; non-cognitive can be divided into material well-being and moral and spiritual well-being. After examining different versions of the cumulative theory, I conclude that technology is not intrinsically cumulative; whether technology is cumulatively progressive is a matter of goals extrinsic to technology. I argue that …

The Applicability Of Torgerson's Concept Of Fiat Measurement In Developmental Stages Of The Social Sciences, Christine V. Zavgren, S. J. Lambert Jan 1980

The Applicability Of Torgerson's Concept Of Fiat Measurement In Developmental Stages Of The Social Sciences, Christine V. Zavgren, S. J. Lambert

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The concept of "fiat measurement" is an alternative to fundamental and derived measurement. This concept is believed to be more descriptive of measurement in the social sciences, where in most cases theories as well-formed as those in the physical sciences do not exist. In fiat measurement an index or measurement of a concept is assumed to be representative of that concept. However, the representation between a measurement scale and the theoretical concept cannot be proven. Although fiat measurement is descriptive of much current work in social sciences, it is shown to be a problematic concept because of its arbitrariness, lack …

The Feasibility Of Processing Fish Aboard The F/V Friesland, Thomas Dykstra Jan 1980

The Feasibility Of Processing Fish Aboard The F/V Friesland, Thomas Dykstra

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Many social, economic and regulatory changes have been occurring in the New England fishing industry over the past few years. These changes demand responses from the individual industry participants. The purpose of this paper is to look at the feasibility of processing onboard the F/V Friesland, as an individual response, in an effort to increase the ex-vessel price of fish resulting in the maintenance of a gross stock and a life style. The F/V Friesland, built in 1978, is an 87 foot stern trawler which participates in the mixed species groundfshery of New England out of the port of Pt. …

The Feasibility Of Increased Utilization Of The Georges Bank Herring Stock, Carder Starr

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The United States has embarked upon a new era of commercial fisheries management and development with the enactment of the Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976 (FCMA). The primary objectives of the FCMA are "to take immediate action to conserve and manage the fishery resources found off the coasts of the U.S." and "to encourage the development of fisheries which are currently underutilized...by the U.S. fishing industry...." One of these underutilized stocks is the Georges Bank herring stock. This study hopes to show that the operation of a fish-processing vessel can be a feasible enterprise with good returns to …

Effects Of Fixed Interval And Continuous Biofeedback Reinforcement On Emg Frontalis Muscle Activity, Kathleen I. Twinem Jan 1980

Effects Of Fixed Interval And Continuous Biofeedback Reinforcement On Emg Frontalis Muscle Activity, Kathleen I. Twinem

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The effects of continuous vs. intermittent reinforcement using electromyographic (EMG) feedback as the reinforcer were compared in reducing frontalis muscle activity. Fourteen subjects were chosen from a group of 30 students who had expressed an interest in learning how to relax. Those students having the highest pre-experimental baseline scores were chosen. They were matched according to both those scores and sex and then randomly assigned to either a continuous biofeedback reinforcement group or a 30 sec. fixed interval biofeedback reinforcement group. The experiment consisted of nine sessions (three acquisition, two treatment, and four extinction) with integrated EMG activity from the …

Effect Of Diet On Aerobic Performance, Maureen Hall Fennerty Dec 1979

Effect Of Diet On Aerobic Performance, Maureen Hall Fennerty

Student Work

Aerobic performance is affected by a number of physiological, psychological, sociological and environmental factors (Astrand, 1977). Among the many physiological factors nutrition plays an important part. However, when considering what constitutes a balanced diet, nutritionists express varying opinions as to what percentage of protein, fat and carbohydrate should be included for the general populace and the athlete. Mayer and Bullen (1960) in their review of literature on nutrition and athletic performance concluded a balanced diet is adequate for the athlete.

The Effects Of Pre And Postnatal Gonadal Hormone Administration On The Adult Aggressive-Target Biting In Female Mice, David D. Smith Dec 1979

The Effects Of Pre And Postnatal Gonadal Hormone Administration On The Adult Aggressive-Target Biting In Female Mice, David D. Smith

Masters Theses

Introduction

It is now well established that androgens and estrogens are intricately involved in influencing the sexual differentiation of the brain, as well as male and female differences of aggressiveness. Evidence is accumulating which indicates that these steroid hormones influence the pattern of nervous connection and organization developing in utero and in the early postnatal period.

To more completely link testosterone's involvement with aggressive behavior, one must examine the voluminous literature which links testosterone with developing neonatal correlates of aggression as well as with adult capacity to display aggressive behavior. In most species the male is more aggressive than the …

Concurrent Drinking By Pigeons On Fixed-Interval Reinforcement Schedules, Robert H.I. Dale Nov 1979

Concurrent Drinking By Pigeons On Fixed-Interval Reinforcement Schedules, Robert H.I. Dale

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Three experienced pigeons were exposed to at least ten consecutive 100-min sessions on each of three food-reinforced fixed-interval (FI) schedules: FI 50-sec, FI 100-sec and FI 200-sec. Water was freely available. Drinking was largely confined to the first third of each fixed interval, and the mean sessional water intake was directly related to the food-reinforcement rate for each animal. The animals drank very quickly, i.e., 3-4 ml/sec, but the drinking bouts were brief, i.e., 0.8-1.4 sec, and infrequent, i.e., 2-5/hr. The parameters describing concurrent drinking in the pigeon are strikingly different from those describing rats’ drinking under similar reinforcement schedules, …

Search Image Formation In The Blue Jay (Cyanocitta Cristata), Alexandra T. Pietrewicz, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Blue jays trained to detect Catocala moths in slides were exposed to two types of slide series containing these moths: series of one species and series of two species intermixed. In one species series, detection ability increased with successive encounters with one prey type. No similar effect occurred in two species series. These results are a direct demonstration of a specific search image.

Investigations On Improvement Of Acceptability And Evaluation Of The Nutritive Value Of Processed Cabbage And Its Effects On The Tumorigenicity In Mice, Chareonsri Srisangnam May 1979

Investigations On Improvement Of Acceptability And Evaluation Of The Nutritive Value Of Processed Cabbage And Its Effects On The Tumorigenicity In Mice, Chareonsri Srisangnam

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The objectives of this investigation have been to study the acceptability and nutritive value of processed cabbage and to elucidate the effects of chronic administration of cabbage on the activity of a colon tumorigen, 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH). The organoleptic unacceptability of cabbage in spite of its high nutritional and economic values governed the choice of this cruciferous vegetable for this work.

Cabbage samples were blanched with steam, chemical solutions, and microwaves. Microwave blanching led to a "burnt spot" effect and to a relatively greater loss in weight of the vegetable. Blanching in solution involved boiling of cabbage with a chemical solution …
