The Effect Of Limited Moisture Supply At Various Stages Of Growth On The Development And Production Of Hybrid Corn, Ralph E. Campbell May 1954

The Effect Of Limited Moisture Supply At Various Stages Of Growth On The Development And Production Of Hybrid Corn, Ralph E. Campbell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Corn occupies from 25 to 30 percent of the crop land harvested in the United States. In recent years the acreage devoted to corn in this country has been decidedly greater than that devoted to any other cultivated crop. In 1944 its dollar value exceeded the combined values of wheat, barley, rye, grain sorghums, and cotton.

Although South Dakota lies on the northwestern fringe of the corn belt, the corn crop is one of the most important in that state. Corn production in that area is somewhat unstable because of drought. Corn often fails to reach full maturity before the …

The Economics Of Rural Residential Zoning In Utah County, Max K. Buchmiller May 1954

The Economics Of Rural Residential Zoning In Utah County, Max K. Buchmiller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Change in the use to which land is put may affect the economic and social return from it. Land-use changes tend to be rather permanent in nature. They should be guided so that social welfare will be served best. Rural Zoning has developed from this need to direct change in land use in rural areas.

The Distribution And Ecology Of The Terrestrial Shell-Bearing Mollusca Of Hanover, Henrico, And Chesterfield Counties, Virginia, John Bayard Burch Apr 1954

The Distribution And Ecology Of The Terrestrial Shell-Bearing Mollusca Of Hanover, Henrico, And Chesterfield Counties, Virginia, John Bayard Burch

Master's Theses

Very little has been published concerning the molluscan fauna of Virginia, this being also true for the area under consideration. A preliminary list of the Mollusca of Hanover County was published by J.B.Burch (1952) in which twenty-five species and subspecies of land snails were reported. Several of the land Mollusca of Henrico and Chesterfield Counties were listed by P.R. Burch (1950). These included the snails Discus patulus Deshayes, Haplotrema concavum (Say), Mesodon thyroidus (Say), Stenotrema hirsutum (Say), Triodopsis Fallax (Say), and Ventridens = (zonitoides) arboreus (Say). Two additional species, Helicodiscus parallelus (Say) and Retinella indentata (Say), were reported by personal …

Weed Control Investigations On Some Important Aquatic Plants Which Impede Flow Of Western Irrigation Water, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation

Elusive Documents

During the past 50 years, the acreage of land placed under irrigation in the western United States has increased greatly to meet the growing demand for food and fiber production. To provide this water for crop production it is necessary not only for river waters to be impounded and irrigation canal distribution systems established but also for the irrigation waterways to be free of obstructing plant growths which impede the flow of water. This requires various types of weed control measures in order that originally designed carrying capacities of the waterways may be maintained. Methods involving new techniques developed mostly …

The Influence Of Locust Bean Gum On The Strength Characteristics Of Handsheets Under Varying Ph Conditions. A Study Of The Effect Of Alum Or Hydrogen Ion Concentration, Robert J. Witters Feb 1954

The Influence Of Locust Bean Gum On The Strength Characteristics Of Handsheets Under Varying Ph Conditions. A Study Of The Effect Of Alum Or Hydrogen Ion Concentration, Robert J. Witters

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A literature survey concerning the addition of locust bean gum to beaten pulp and the resulting strength characteristics imparted to handsheets through the addition of the gum has been undertaken. Although much literature can be found, hardly any detailed information can be extracted on the effect of alum or hydrogen ion concentration. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to draw some conclusion, through laboratory work, as to any possible change, due to pH or alum, in the strength characteristics of handsheets containing locust bean gum.

The first part of this thesis will be a brief review of work that …

The Loss Of Some Strength Characteristics Of Coated Magazine Paper As A Result Of Exposure To Elevated Temperatures, Hugh D. Burnie Jan 1954

The Loss Of Some Strength Characteristics Of Coated Magazine Paper As A Result Of Exposure To Elevated Temperatures, Hugh D. Burnie

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Introduction

The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect that varying degrees of temperature have on the strength properties of coated magazine stock. Paper of this type encounters high temperature conditions primarily in the ink drying operations following the printing of the web. The strength with which the paper meets the cutting, folding and binding methods which follow the drying operation are of paramount importance to the printer. Throughout the work, attempts were made to assimilate conditions encountered in present day commercial practice.

Plankton Studies Of The Tomales Bay, California, Andrew William Mcclain Jan 1954

Plankton Studies Of The Tomales Bay, California, Andrew William Mcclain

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

These studies on the plankton of Tomales Bay were designed to determine the effects of such physical factors as tides, temperatures, salinities and sunshine on the quantities of various types of organisms, and to obtain a more comprehensive picture of estuarine life at the Pacific Marine Station. The studies were begun in the summer of 1948 and continued through the summer of 1953.

Although various studies have been conducted on different aspects of marine plankton, the only general treatments of the subject of which the writer is aware are those of Johnstone (1924), Ricketts and Calvin (1951), Sproaton (1949) and …

Rb54-175 Farm Family Housing Needs And Preferences In Nebraska, Virginia Y. Trotter, Margaret I. Liston Jan 1954

Rb54-175 Farm Family Housing Needs And Preferences In Nebraska, Virginia Y. Trotter, Margaret I. Liston

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Some farm families in Nebraska want to build new houses. Many others are planning to remodel. These families will be asking architects, engineers, builders, contractors, and dealers for plans that meet their needs. Thus, farmhouse plans should be developed that provide for the basic needs of all farm families and that are adaptable to special requirements of some families.

This 1954 bulletin reports the results of a survey of Nebraska farm family preferences, activities and possessions as they are related to housing needs. The study was part of a cooperative research project for the improvement of farm family housing in …

Fat Separation In Evaporated Milk. Iii. Gravity Separation And Heat Stability, R. B. Maxcy, H. H. Sommer Jan 1954

Fat Separation In Evaporated Milk. Iii. Gravity Separation And Heat Stability, R. B. Maxcy, H. H. Sommer

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Fat separation is a continuous problem in the production, handling, and storage of evaporated milk. This defect becomes most objectionable during prolonged quiescent storage at high temperatures. The butterfat rises to the upper surface forming a viscous, leathery layer, which may prevent pouring of the milk from a relatively small opening.
To retard fat separation, the manufacturer attempts to obtain effective homogenization and sufficient coagulation of the proteins during sterilization to give the product a high viscosity or "heavy body" (1, 12, 14). These practical applications are aimed at three fundamental considerations: a reduction in the size of the fat …

Fat Separation In Evaporated Milk Ii. Age-Thinning Of Concentrated, Sterilized Milk, R. B. Maxcy, H. H. Sommer

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

During the process of sterilization of evaporated milk there is a gradual increase in the viscosity, or the body of the product. However, there is a reduction in the viscosity especially during the early phase of storage. This loss in viscosity, referred to as age-thinning, continues for a number of months.

Fat Separation In Evaporated Milk I. Homogenization, Separation, And Viscosity Tests, R. B. Maxcy, H. H. Sommer Jan 1954

Fat Separation In Evaporated Milk I. Homogenization, Separation, And Viscosity Tests, R. B. Maxcy, H. H. Sommer

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

The rising of fat in evaporated milk on prolonged storage will inevitably occur since the density of the fat particles is lower than that of the concentrated milk plasma in which they are suspended. It has been shown that the velocity of rise of individual fat globules in milk plasma is in good agreement with the velocity as predicated by Stokes' law (5). Troy and Sharp (7) also found the velocity of rise of globule clusters in general agreement with this law. Their observations on clusters were less precise, however, because of inherent complications arising from the irregularities in the …

Biological Factors Involved In The Absenteeism Of Children From Stockton Public Schools, Fae-Belle Coudeyre

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Every state has a compulsory school attendance law, and yet at any time during the school year approximately 12 percent of the children will not be in school - cannot very well be in school, because of some physical, mental, or emotional handicap, either temporary or permanent.

These absentees are what are now often called the “exceptional” children, including the blind and partially-blind, the deaf and hard-of-hearing, the speech-defective, the crippled, the delicate, the epileptic, the mentally deficient, those with serious social maladjustments, together with those who are temporarily out of school because of a disease or accident. The total …
