Chenoweth Prevails: The Connection Between Social Standards And The Marimba’S Development In The Western Art Music Tradition, Jackson Hall

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Among percussionists, the names of many marimbists come to mind before that of Vida Chenoweth (1928-2018), the pioneer of the modern marimba recital. Chenoweth began her first recital tour in the early 1950s at a time when the marimba did not yet have a dedicated solo repertoire, and women were largely excluded from performing on orchestral instruments. This thesis explores the musical and social contexts in which Chenoweth performed and worked, with particular attention to her recital history, critical reviews, and, through works written specifically for her performance, her technical abilities. She not only sparked the evolution of marimba technique …

The Worst Collateral Consequence: Rethinking The Best Interests Standard In The Context Of Racism, Classism, And Mass Incarceration, Abigail Hean Jan 2025

The Worst Collateral Consequence: Rethinking The Best Interests Standard In The Context Of Racism, Classism, And Mass Incarceration, Abigail Hean

Children's Legal Rights Journal

The United States incarcerates more people than any other country. In recent years, mandatory minimums, probation revocation, and other laws have led to increased periods of incarceration, even for low-level offenses. When a parent becomes incarcerated, their children are often left in the hands of the state, and a countdown to the termination of parental rights begins. Even if the parent has never been accused of child abuse or neglect, parental rights can be terminated on the grounds that the parent is unable to care for their children while incarcerated. Increasingly, states have placed more emphasis on permanent placement for …

Veiled Child Labor: A Focus On The Almajiranci And Yar Aiki Systems In Northern Nigeria, Aisha Mohammed Suleiman Jan 2025

Veiled Child Labor: A Focus On The Almajiranci And Yar Aiki Systems In Northern Nigeria, Aisha Mohammed Suleiman

Children's Legal Rights Journal

Child labor is like a powder keg. It remains a persistent global issue, with millions of children subjected to exploitative practices that strip them of their fundamental rights, access to education, and overall well-being. Although child labor is an increasing issue around the globe, this paper focuses on Northern Nigeria because the Almajiri systems and Yar aiki systems covertly function as platforms for child labor. To examine this issue, this paper adopts a doctrinal approach. It argues that legal reforms alone are insufficient to address these issues. Other challenges, such as insecurity and economic factors, also contribute significantly to children’s …

Children's Legal Rights Journal

This article provides a comparative analysis of state legislation on screening and interventions for dyslexia, language learning disorders, and early literacy issues in the United States. The analysis emphasizes how different approaches to tackling learning deficiencies across states in the U.S. may trigger unequal distribution of services and interventions across the country. Furthermore, the lack of uniform definitions and terminology employed by state lawmakers makes it difficult to evaluate the efficiency of implemented policies. Evidence-based federal guidelines would help set uniform standards for low literacy and LLD screening and interventions in schools nationwide, leading to a more robust and equitable …

Designing Safe Highly Automated Human-Machine Systems Using An Stpa-Based Approach: A Case Study, Justin Poh, Nancy G. Leveson, Robert R. Copeland

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

Because modern aircraft are increasingly reliant on automation, it is essential thatthese aircraft include appropriate human-automation interactions to ensure safeflight. However, it can be challenging to design these interactions using currentmethods. This paper demonstrates how a design approach based on Systems-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) enables more in-depth consideration ofhuman factors engineering and system safety when designing the pilot-automationarchitecture for an advanced rotorcraft concept. First, STPA is used to derive thecontrol responsibilities needed to safely operate the aircraft. Then, alternativeways to allocate those control responsibilities to the human pilot or automationare compared to identify safety and human factors-related benefits and tradeoffsto …

Leveraging System Definition For Human Factors Integration In The Uam Ecosystem; Cockpit Display For Autonomous Flight, Chang-Geun Oh Jan 2025

Leveraging System Definition For Human Factors Integration In The Uam Ecosystem; Cockpit Display For Autonomous Flight, Chang-Geun Oh

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

As UAM moves toward autonomy, human operators will remain essential—especially ininterpreting complex variables or managing system limitations. Cockpit displays act as a bridgebetween the pilot and multiple UAM ecosystem components, including navigation, traffic, weather, and diagnostics systems. This paper argues that defining each component’s inputs, outputs, services, and requests is a prerequisite for effective human-machine interface (HMI)design, particularly as information is often pre-processed before reaching the pilot. The initialgeneration of UAM systems is likely to adopt manual flight controls due to regulatoryconservatism, certification readiness, and the need for public trust. However, as full autonomybecomes viable, cockpit interfaces must evolve to support remote …

Review Of Fatigue Micro-Mitigations For Application In Air Traffic Control: Benefits, Challenges, And Feasibility, John Kang, Ruth E. Propper, Michael Sawyer

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

Air traffic controllers (ATCs) are one of the primary drivers of safe and resilient operations in the National Airspace System. The FAA has implemented manylarge-scale fatigue mitigation strategies (e.g., scheduling policies, break time requirements, and time-on-position limits) to combat fatigue. Given the performance benefits related to managing fatigue, ATCs may also benefit from simple, practical fatigue interventions and that could improve job performance. This review targets ‘micro-mitigations,’ which we define as mitigations that maybe unobtrusive, can be quickly implemented, have a rapid impact, and are easy to engage. We explore the possible utility of five micro-mitigations to help minimize fatigue/improve alertness: …

Comparing Unidirectional, Bidirectional, And Word2vec Models For Discovering Vulnerabilities In Compiled Lifted Code, Gary Mccully, John Hastings, Shengjie Xu, Adam Fortier

Research & Publications

Ransomware and other forms of malware cause significant financial and operational damage to organizations by exploiting long-standing and often difficult-to-detect software vulnerabilities. To detect vulnerabilities such as buffer overflows in compiled code, this research investigates the application of unidirectional transformer-based embeddings, specifically GPT-2. Using a dataset of LLVM functions, we trained a GPT-2 model to generate embeddings, which were subsequently used to build LSTM neural networks to differentiate between vulnerable and non-vulnerable code. Our study reveals that embeddings from the GPT-2 model significantly outperform those from bidirectional models of BERT and RoBERTa, achieving an accuracy of 92.5\% and an F1-score …

Towards Modeling Pilot-Cockpit Interactions To Identify Interface Design Deficiencies Early In System Development, Sanidhya Jain, Karen Marais Jan 2025

Towards Modeling Pilot-Cockpit Interactions To Identify Interface Design Deficiencies Early In System Development, Sanidhya Jain, Karen Marais

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

This paper introduces the Pilot-Cockpit Interaction Model (PCIM), a human-taskinterfaceframework built on flight tasks and micro-interactions (perception, comprehension, and projection). PCIM links cockpit design components (aspects, requirements, settings) with pilot behavior to systematically evaluate interfaceeffectiveness for different flight tasks. We demonstrate PCIM’s application through acase study of helmet-mounted display symbology, showing how interface deficiencyidentification and design changes can enhance pilot comprehension and projection. ThePCIM enables early-stage identification of design deficiencies, offering a structured,human-centered approach to improving interface design and pilot performance. Futurework will expand the model’s scope and integrate quantifiable metrics to evaluate pilotresponses across broader system and interaction levels.

Mental Visualization In Aviation Training: Propensity, Measurement, & Implications For Narrative In Extended Reality, Nelly Dragu, Juliana Reis, Nathan A. Sonnenfeld, Blake Nguyen, Florian G. Jentsch

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

We are currently investigating the role of mental imagery and narrative structureto leverage episodic memory for training, particularly in extended reality (XR).We hypothesize that (a) learners’ propensity for visualization and (b) the use ofinstructional storytelling contributes to more meaningful and effective trainingexperiences. Episodic memory may be particularly helpful for encoding andretrieving the place and timing of actions in a procedure sequence. Furthermore,we believe that learners’ propensity for mental visualization may underpin part ofthis relationship. Here, we describe results from an exploratory factor analysisthat focused on factor loadings across a battery of measures of learners’immersive tendencies, visuospatial abilities, imagination, and mental …

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

This study examined the influence of the amount one plays video games on theworkload and situational awareness (SA) of student pilots at an aeronauticaluniversity. Twenty-five student pilots, with and without video gaming experience, participated in simulated traffic pattern flights with varying workload levels.Following these simulations, they self-evaluated their workload using the NASATLXscale. Workload levels were manipulated by the amount of aircraft traffic, the volume of air traffic control communications, and clearance changes for theaircraft (i.e., multitasking). The study found significantly higher self-reports ofworkload in the high-workload scenario than in the low-workload scenario. Selfreportedhigher workload was inversely correlated with SA. Gamers were morelikely …

Flight Safety Data Storytelling: Continuous Learning From What Went Right, Barth Baron Jr., Melissa Peterson Jan 2025

Flight Safety Data Storytelling: Continuous Learning From What Went Right, Barth Baron Jr., Melissa Peterson

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2025

The anticipated increase in air traffic, airspace complexity, and safety datavolume inspired the development of an In-time Aviation Safety ManagementSystem (IASMS). Evolving from the legacy Safety Management System (SMS),IASMS will use machine learning (ML) to improve current risk management andsafety assurance methodologies, predict future threats, and reduce analysis andresponse times. We propose applying the IASMS concept to directly supportskilled performance in real-time with an interactive safety visualization tool forpilots. This tool would analyze disparate data sets to reveal latent operationalthreats and provide examples of skilled performance adaptations. Pilots wouldaccess tailored ML-enabled predictive data narratives through a user-centeredinterface. Challenges with using …

Courting The Court: Understanding The Power Of The Supreme Court Through The History Of Abortion, Rowan Danou

Research Honors

Looking at the history of abortion in the legal and political sphere through the lenses of Rober Dahl, David Adamany, and William Lasser shows the views of the Supreme Court being predominantly shaped by elite policy scholars and the institutions of which they are a part. These views are nurtured outside the political mainstream and come into force when realignments bring new ideas and personnel into the policy crafting arena.
