Comparison Of Various Types Of Milk Sampling Devices, William A. Hoskisson
Comparison Of Various Types Of Milk Sampling Devices, William A. Hoskisson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The importance of an accurate measurement of fat in milk deliveries is fully appreciated by most producers and plant operators. Since milk is purchased on a fat basis, the accuracy of the procedure used in sampling and testing the milk has often been questioned by both the buyer and seller.
A composite sample to be theoretically correct, should consist of aliquot portions of the milk shipments represented. Where aliquot portions are to be taken, a milk thief is commonly suggested. This device takes a vertical column of milk from the weigh tank. The idea is that the height of the …

Spraying Tree Fruits, C. C. Wiggans, E. H. Hoppert
Spraying Tree Fruits, C. C. Wiggans, E. H. Hoppert
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The production of sound, clean fruit is unquestionably one of the major problems facing the modern fruit grower. Culture may be neglected and pruning delayed for a time but the omission of sprays for even a single season demonstrates their absolute necessity. This applies equally to the commercial grower and to the farmer or gardener who has only a few trees.

Bulletin No. 290 - Phosphate In Utah, J. Stewart Williams
Bulletin No. 290 - Phosphate In Utah, J. Stewart Williams
UAES Bulletins
Agitation for the development of the western phosphate field as part of the national program of conservation and economic rehabilitation has, in the last three years, focused public attention on the phosphate reserves of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Utah. In every conference or discussion on this subject, the minds of Utah's representatives have naturally turned to the question, "What is Utah's share in this great natural resource?" Obviously nature pays no heed to political boundaries, and neither does the prosperity of Utah's citizens depend solely upon that which is circumscribed within the state's boundaries. Nonetheless, it is necessary for Utahns …

This study is a part of a more comprehensive one which was organized in 1928 for the purpose of ascertaining what conditions existed in bonded irrigation and drainage districts which were unable to. liquidate obligations incurred.
The first such area to be studied was the Delta Area in Millard County. This area was selected for this study because of the pressing need for more detailed and wider information than was available to either the farmers or the bondholders and because available facts based on careful study might aid in achieving fairer settlements. These data might also assist other areas in …

Bionomics Of The Aquatic And Semi-Aquatic Hemiptera Of Dallas County, Texas, Dick D. Millspaugh
Field and Laboratory
Although (as Professor S. W. Geiser has shown in his publications on scientific study and exploration in Early Texas) a number of naturalists and entomological collectors have worked in Texas, and some of them (like Jacob Boll, Gideon Lincecum, J. D. Mitchell, A. C. V. Schott, G. W. Belfrage, E. A. Schwarz and F. A. Schaupp) have made notable contributions toward our first knowledge of the insect fauna of Texas, either by collection of specimens sent to monographers and specialists, or by publication, still, on several groups our information is meager. Among these groups are the aquatic and semi-aquatic Hemiptera.

Amount Of Underground Plant Materials In Different Grassland Climates, S. B. Shively, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
From the highlands of central Mexico entirely across the United States and northward into Canada extends the great midcontinental area of grassland. From this central mass, prairie extends westward across Wyoming into eastern Utah, and southwestward through northern New Mexico into northern Arizona. Other grasslands in the northwest cover most of southern Idaho, a part of northern Utah, large areas in eastern Oregon and Washington, and recur in British Columbia. The Pacific prairie occupies the Great Valley of California, and the Desert Plains grassland much of southern Arizona and New Mexico and southwestern Texas. Together they constitute the Grassland or …
Fifty Years Of Achievement In Agricultural Investigation, R. T. Prescott
Fifty Years Of Achievement In Agricultural Investigation, R. T. Prescott
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
In Nebraska, a hustling frontier state in 1887, the legislature hesitated not at all in taking advantage of the provisions of the Hatch Act, and now that fifty years have elapsed since the Station was founded, seventy-five years since the Land Grant College Act was passed and the U. S. Department of Agriculture established, and almost twenty-five years since the Agricultural Extension Service was added, it seems worth while to present a general summary of achievement within the state. The main object will be to show some of the important things that have been learned through the investigations of the …

A Preliminary Study Of The Vegetative Cover In Spanish Fork Canyon, Utah, Ben S. Markham
A Preliminary Study Of The Vegetative Cover In Spanish Fork Canyon, Utah, Ben S. Markham
Theses and Dissertations
Spanish Fork Canyon is located in central Utah and is part of the Wasatch Mountain range. Since the coming of the white man to this section of country it has been used as a trail. The canyon provides summer range for stock as well as a watershed. Plant densities were determined by the point observation method using series of one-hundred square foot plots. Three areas which have been subject to different grazing uses were studied. The association changes in the canyon are the replacement of sage by slender wheatgrass on the shallow soils and the disclimax condition resulting from over-grazing …

A resume of the First Half-Century of Research 1888 - 1938 at the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station including the Biennial Report 1936 - 1938.
The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station in reaching the fiftieth year of its history can look back upon a brilliant record of achievement covering the practical as well as the more fundamental problems of agriculture in this arid state. The difficulties encountered in conquering deserts down through human history have demonstrated the mastery of man's spirit over his physical environment. Man's destiny to multiply, subdue, and replenish the earth cannot be accomplished by enjoying the fruits of …
A Manual For Hog Raisers, W. J. Loeffel
A Manual For Hog Raisers, W. J. Loeffel
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
Hogs are one of Nebraska's principal sources of agricultural income. The popularity of the pig is doubtless due largely to his efficiency as a meat producer. He uses less feed to make a given gain than either the steer or the sheep. On being slaughtered, the pig dresses out a higher percentage of meat than either of the other two meat animals. Since pork is generally fatter than beef or lamb, it has a higher energy value. Pork lends itself to curing processes and, as cured meat and lard, occupies an important place in the world's commerce. Processing aids in …

The Organization Of Content For Agricultural Teaching In Western Kansas High Schools, Leo Virgil Wedel
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The specific problem of this investigation pertains to, “The Organization of Content for Agricultural Teaching in Western Kansas High Schools." The study deals with the course of instruction in all high schools in the western half of the state teaching agriculture, except those teaching vocational agriculture. Schools teaching vocational agriculture are organized under the Smith-Hughes law. A school teaching agriculture organized under this law has a definitely prescribed course of study which does not apply to non-vocational schools. Thus, the necessity for the organization of a course of study for this latter type of school. This is a course that …
The Accuracy Of Pressure Gauges Used On Household Steam Pressure Cookers, Arnold E. Baragar
The Accuracy Of Pressure Gauges Used On Household Steam Pressure Cookers, Arnold E. Baragar
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
In the pressure cooker, high temperature is obtained by using steam under pressure. Since the pressure gauge is used as the indicator of temperature it is essential that the gauge register the correct pressure. Hence, this paper deals mainly with a study of the accuracy of both new and old pressure gauges used on steam pressure cookers. At the same time, four other phases were investigated: (1) the proper functioning of safety valves, (2) the various methods of sealing the lid to the cooker, (3) the proper evacuation of air from the cooker, and (4) the use of a thermometer …

Ec38-118 Soil And Moisture Conservation In Nebraska, D.L. J. Gross, E.H. Doll
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
When the white men first explored Nebraska, they found little erosion taking place. They found the hills, particularly in eastern Nebraska, covered with a dense growth of grass, underlain with a thick mat of decaying debris. The valleys were even more densely covered with the water-loving grasses and sedges. The soil underneath the prairie was black and spongy, the result of centuries of accumulating humus. The valleys bordering the streams were boggy and abounded with springs. Clear water flowed constantly in the streams. The upland draws in the more favorable parts of the state were heavily covered with the big …

The Magdalena Valley Of Colombia: A Geographical Reconnaissance, J. C. Kearby, R. D. Everett
Field and Laboratory
The Magdalena River, which rises on the slopes of Papas Peak, at the junction of the Cordillera Central and the Cordillera Oriental of the northern Andes, flows northward through the heart of Colombia to the Caribbean Sea, to form the country's leading highway. From its source, the river winds its way through 1,000 miles of jungle to Barranquilla, the principal Colombian port on the Caribbean. The Valley extends some seventy-five kilometers laterally, terminating in the foothills of the Central and Oriental Cordilleras.

Note On The Origin Of Tiffin Hole, Iowa, John D. Boon, Claude C. Albritton Jr.
Field and Laboratory
In describing the crater-like depression a quarter of a mile south of Tiffin, Iowa, Professor C. C. Wylie emphasized the need for criteria to distinguish depressions caused by meteoritic explosions from those formed by other agencies. He was able to show that this elliptical depression 100 ft. long, 75 ft. across, and about eight feet deep, is not a sink hole, buffalo wallow, artificial pond, or initial depression in glacial drift.… rofessor Wylie considered the possibility of a meteoritic origin, but was unable to discover convincing field evidence to support this hypothesis. The writers suggest that Tiffin Hole is a …

Bulletin No. 281 - Sorghums Varietal Tests In Utah, R. W. Woodward, D. C. Tingey, R. J. Evans
UAES Bulletins
Sorghums are not grown to any appreciable extent in Utah except in the Virgin River valley in the southwestern portion of the State. No experimental work on sorghum culture had been done prior to 1931 except on the dry land of Juab County near Nephi. Those early tests, discontinued after 1917, indicated that sorghums were poorly adapted to such conditions.
Numerous improved varieties have been produced since that time, some of which are adapted to relatively short growing seasons.
This bulletin will discuss the practicability of growing some of these varieties of sorghum in Utah and their economic value compared …

An Economic Analysis Of Farm Tenure In The Uintah Basin, Utah, Glen B. Johnson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Before presenting an economic analysis of farm tenure in the Uintah Basin, it will be helpful to consider some aspects of the historical, economic, and social background of that portion of the region included in this study.
A portion of the Uintah Indian Reservation, which was created in 1861, was opened to white settlement under the homestead and townsite laws on August 28, 1905 after 103,000 acres of farming land had been allotted to individual Indians living on the reservation and 276,000 acres reserved for Indian grazing lands and timber reserve.
