Phylogeny And Historical Biogeography Of Uroleucon Aphids, Audrey Michelle Mullen May 2025

Phylogeny And Historical Biogeography Of Uroleucon Aphids, Audrey Michelle Mullen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The aphid genus Uroleucon (Aphididae: Aphidinae: Macrosiphini) is a diverse group of about 230 species found globally in most temperate regions, principally in the northern hemisphere. Only 23 species are described from the southern hemisphere, in South American temperate regions such as Chile, Argentina, and Peru. However, the origins of the South American species are unknown, as are the relationships of these taxa to northern hemisphere Uroleucon species. This study seeks to establish the relationships between Uroleucon aphids native to South America and their North American and Eurasian counterparts using genetic data. We use phylogenetic analysis of cytochrome c oxidase …

While the STAT2 signaling pathway …

Investigation Of Immune/Performance Trade-Offs In Neonate Children's Pythons (Antaresia Childreni), Ellie Hartman May 2025

Investigation Of Immune/Performance Trade-Offs In Neonate Children's Pythons (Antaresia Childreni), Ellie Hartman

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Energetic costs and constraints are key considerations when analyzing an organism’s life history and may require trade-offs to be made between different life history traits. One of these trade-offs occurs between investment in immunity and performance. The purpose of this study is to discover if this trade-off influences behavior in neonate Children’s pythons (Antaresia childreni). We hypothesize that snakes undergoing an immune response will have reduced behaviors promoting survival. To test this hypothesis, neonate Children’s pythons were randomly assigned to receive an immune challenge of keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) or a vehicle injection as a control. Two days …

Survey Of Insect Pests On Cut Flowers In Utah, Elliot Roberts May 2025

Survey Of Insect Pests On Cut Flowers In Utah, Elliot Roberts

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Cut flower production is a relatively new industry in the state of Utah, gaining momentum by 2020. However, little research concerning management of the crops and their pests has been conducted. One issue producers face are insects that harm the plants in ways such as feeding damage and transmission of diseases. Currently, it is unknown which insects target different species of cut flowers in Utah. Morphological identification of genera and species is often difficult or impossible because of the small size of many of the insects and minute differences between species. This project uses PCR and DNA sequencing to identify …

Coccidioidomycosis presents considerable health hazards and can be fatal. It affects between 206,000 and 360,000 individuals annually, leading to 700 to 1,100 fatalities in the United States alone. In response to these issues, extensive research has concentrated on therapeutic goals for this infectious disease. Nonetheless, more limited research has focused on the environmental detection of its causative fungi, which is crucial for forecasting treatment needs and formulating preventive strategies. …

Investigating Self-Healing Mechanisms In Host-Pathogen Interactions: A Literature Review Of Macrophage Functions In Tuberculosis, Blessing Savusa May 2025

Investigating Self-Healing Mechanisms In Host-Pathogen Interactions: A Literature Review Of Macrophage Functions In Tuberculosis, Blessing Savusa

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of mortality, particularly in underdeveloped regions. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is regarded as one of the most successful pathogens due to its ability to evade host immunity and persist within granulomas. Macrophages are the first-line host defenders that engulf Mtb into phagosomes, which initiates lysosomal activity for degradation. However, the virulence factor of Mtb is able to inhibit phagolysosome fusion. The host immune system forms granulomas to contain the mycobacterium at the site of inflammation. This, in turn, causes a necrotic state and causes tissue damage from the prolonged inflammation. Studies suggest that the host's …

Computational Framework For Integrating Single Nucleotide Variant Scores To Identify Novel Genes In Cancers, Amanda Maria Bataycan

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A quantitative integrated scoring function, iQ(G) was developed to assess the cumulative effects of nonsynonymous single nucleotide variants (SNVs) on the protein-coding genes with the goal to find novel candidate cancer-related genes from patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and ovarian cancer (OC). With Genomic Data Commons as primary data resource for this project, whole-exome SNV data were extracted on patients with one of these three cancers. For each specific cancer, the iQ(G) function sums up the deleterious effects of individual SNVs with respect to the transcripts of the gene G in which they occur, weighted …

Intratumoral Fibrin As A Novel Immunomodulatory Factor In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Mazharul Karim May 2025

Intratumoral Fibrin As A Novel Immunomodulatory Factor In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma, Mazharul Karim

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In-situ coagulation is a common clinical feature of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) that presents a highly thrombotic and crosslinked insoluble fibrin (x-fibrin)-laden tumor stroma (FibTS). However, the specific impact of FibTS on immune cells behavior remains largely unexplored in this poorly infiltrated tumor. We aimed to elucidate how FibTS in PDAC regulates immune cell infiltration, polarization, and crosstalk that favors immunosuppressive microenvironment and tumor growth. We characterized human PDAC tissues by multiplex immunostaining and checked the spatial distribution of immune cells based on the presence of x-fibrin. We investigated how FibTS influences the infiltration of tumor-associated macrophage (TAM) and T-cell …

Optimizing Nutrient Recycling To Achieve Zero–Discharge Management For Controlled Environment Agriculture, Noah James Langenfeld

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Controlled environment agriculture (CEA) allows for human control of one or more environmental factors affecting crop production. Optimizing nutrient management in such systems allows for translation and predictions of sustainable management strategies in the field. These systems will be used to supply fresh food as public and private space agencies are planning to send humans to the Moon and Mars in the near future. Food resupply becomes increasingly difficult as the distance from Earth increases. Plants can be grown off-Earth as a food source, but their growth must be carefully managed to ensure long-term sustainability. I describe a model used …

Mighty Mycorrhizae, Continuum, and Myco Apply supported faster germination, while seeds treated with Spectrum and Seaweed took …

Gone With The Flow: Flow Reduction Coincides With Reduced Metabolism And Standing Stock Of Benthic Algae And Macroinvertebrates In Desert Rivers, Chloe E. Lyles May 2025

Gone With The Flow: Flow Reduction Coincides With Reduced Metabolism And Standing Stock Of Benthic Algae And Macroinvertebrates In Desert Rivers, Chloe E. Lyles

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

River metabolism, the measure of energy flow in a river, is driven by hydrological and physicochemical regimes (e.g., temperature, turbidity, and nutrients). However, these regimes are increasingly altered by human water demand and climate change-driven drought. These stressors alter the magnitude, timing, and duration of critical spring-snowmelt floods with poorly understood consequences on ecosystem function, particularly in desert rivers. To investigate the linkages between flow reduction, river metabolism, and basal food resource productivity (i.e., algae and aquatic invertebrates), we measured metabolism and basal resource availability in seven desert tributaries with varying degrees of flow reduction during low-flow conditions in 2023 …

Understanding The Impact Of Colloidal Calcium Phosphate On The Ph Variation In Cheddar Cheese During Early Stages Of Aging, Rachel Lindstrom May 2025

Understanding The Impact Of Colloidal Calcium Phosphate On The Ph Variation In Cheddar Cheese During Early Stages Of Aging, Rachel Lindstrom

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

The Cheddar cheese industry has recently observed variation in the pH of their cheese during the early stage of storage. This variation may be due to the addition of the faster acid producing thermophilic starter culture Streptococcus thermophilus which was recently introduced into the Cheddar cheese making process. This starter culture may impact the calcium buffering properties of the cheese due to more retention of the insoluble calcium (INSOL Ca) within the cheese. To investigate this problem, we studied how insoluble calcium affects cheeses with pH ranging from 4.8 to 6.6 and found that INSOL Ca was positively correlated with …

Maximizing Dryland Seed-Based Restoration Success Via Retrospective Analyses Of Species-Use Patterns And Field Testing Of Seed Mix Composition, Spencer J. Good May 2025

Maximizing Dryland Seed-Based Restoration Success Via Retrospective Analyses Of Species-Use Patterns And Field Testing Of Seed Mix Composition, Spencer J. Good

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Due to harsh and variable environmental conditions, successful plant establishment in "dryland" ecosystems – areas with scarce precipitation – is a major challenge for restoration. One of the most important decisions influencing restoration outcomes is choosing which species to plant (i.e., species selection). Here I explored two opportunities to improve restoration success related to species selection. First, I examined recent restoration projects across Utah, USA to understand species selection patterns by site conditions (e.g., precipitation, elevation) and seed costs, and to identify tools for matching species to sites. Second, I tested how commonly used non-native species – those not originally …

Multiscale Integration Of Receptor-Ligand Dynamics Into Discrete And Continuous Tumor Growth Models With Application To Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Treatment, Romasa Qasim May 2025

Multiscale Integration Of Receptor-Ligand Dynamics Into Discrete And Continuous Tumor Growth Models With Application To Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Treatment, Romasa Qasim

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor cascade plays a crucial role in the survival and proliferation of tumor cells. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are a class of drugs that inhibit epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs), thereby preventing the downstream signal transduction. Despite their importance, models that link spatial receptor dynamics to tumor growth remain scarce. Further, TKIs act through selective mechanisms, inhibiting active, inactive, or all receptor states, which poses a challenge to traditional modeling approaches.

We propose to numerically study two mathematical models incorporating receptor-dynamics into cancer models to describe the impact of EGFR overexpression and TKIs. The first …

Pathways Of Nitrogen Loss After Fertilization In Dryland Ecosystems, Fidel Manuel Renteria May 2025

Pathways Of Nitrogen Loss After Fertilization In Dryland Ecosystems, Fidel Manuel Renteria

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Dryland ecosystems cover approximately 41% of the Earth’s terrestrial surface, and are characterized by limited moisture, nutrient-poor soils, and pulsed precipitation regimes that collectively constrain nutrient cycling. Although nitrogen (N) is often assumed to be a primary limiting nutrient in these environments, fertilization studies frequently reveal minimal biotic response to added N—a pattern known as the "dryland nitrogen paradox." This paradox has been attributed to rapid nitrogen loss via gaseous emissions and leaching, exacerbated by interactions with water and phosphorus (P) availability. To investigate these loss pathways, we conducted a field experiment at the Jornada Experimental Range in the northern …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is an aggressive and complex malignancy that accounts for 15% of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cases in the United States. Tyrosine kinases control critical cellular processes, including the development, survival, and activation of T cells, and are established drivers of leukemia.Tyrosine kinases involved in hematological disorders include receptor tyrosine kinases and non-receptor tyrosine kinases family members such as SRC, ABL, FAK, and Janus kinases (JAKs). This study primarily focused on JAK1 gain-of-function (GoF) mutations. These mutations are recognized as hyperactivating mutations, maintaining kinase activity of JAKs on and essentially keeping downstream signaling effectors, like …

The Bullied Prairie Vole: Modeling Depression And Anxiety Through Social Defeat Stress, Minerva Rodriguez May 2025

The Bullied Prairie Vole: Modeling Depression And Anxiety Through Social Defeat Stress, Minerva Rodriguez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Stress-induced illnesses, such as major depression and anxiety, are significant global causes of disability. This highlights the need for reliable animal models that accurately mimic social stress-induced maladaptations, thus, allowing the experimental study of the etiology of such disorders. Prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster), known for their human-like bi-parental behavior and monogamous partner preferences, are a relevant model for the study of stress-induced psychopathologies. For this reason, in this dissertation, I examined whether exposing voles to the social defeat stress (SDS) paradigm, an experimental approach that captures bullying behavior, would result in both depression and anxiety-related profiles. To do this, experimental …

Regulation Of Ccr7 Signaling Events By G-Protein-Coupled Receptor Kinases 2 And 3, Anahi Sanchez May 2025

Regulation Of Ccr7 Signaling Events By G-Protein-Coupled Receptor Kinases 2 And 3, Anahi Sanchez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) can bind multiple ligands, leading to differential signaling events termed biased signaling. C-C chemokine receptor 7 (CCR7) is a GPCR known to have biased signaling between the two ligands it binds to, CCL19 and CCL21. Binding of C-C Chemokine Ligand 19 (CCL19) promotes a high level of CCR7 phosphorylation, while CCL21 leads to a much lower level of CCR7 phosphorylation; findings observed in HEK and dendritic cells. GPCR kinases (GRKs), which can control the phosphorylation patterns of a GPCR, are hypothesized to regulate biased signaling of a receptor. GRK expression differs between cell lines and cell …

Ghrelin And Decision-Making: Exploring Its Role In Food Reward, Novelty-Seeking, And Cost Valuation, Serina A. Batson May 2025

Ghrelin And Decision-Making: Exploring Its Role In Food Reward, Novelty-Seeking, And Cost Valuation, Serina A. Batson

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

When low energy levels are detected, Ghrelin, a peptide hormone, is produced in the fundus of the stomach. Referred to as the "hunger hormone", Ghrelin is traditionally associated with increased food intake and blood sugar levels. A key modulator in the gut-brain interaction, Ghrelin's growth hormone secretagogue receptor can be found widely across the cortico-striosomal circuit. Critical for decision-making, Ghrelin-based manipulation of this circuit can directly affect reward and cost valuation. While Ghrelin is uniformly considered to increase the valuation of food-based rewards, little research has explored its impact on non-food-based rewards or its effects on cost valuation. Therefore, to …

Polyphenol-Protein Interactions In Pigmented Cereals – A Clean-Label Approach To Tailor Starch Viscosity, Annegret Jannasch May 2025

Polyphenol-Protein Interactions In Pigmented Cereals – A Clean-Label Approach To Tailor Starch Viscosity, Annegret Jannasch

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Viscosity plays an important role in the food industry as it affects the quality, processing stability, and shelf-life of food and impacts physiological responses such as satiation and satiety. Greater viscosity reduces food intake by increasing the perception of satiety, primarily by delaying gastric emptying and increasing tactile stimulation. Starch is commonly added to food products as a viscosifying ingredient, which often involves chemically modifying the starch via cross-linking, to enhance its resistance to high shear, temperature and acidity. However, chemically modified starches are not “clean-label” ingredients due to the use of toxic chemicals. Therefore, further exploration is needed to …
