There has been much discussion recently relative to the geologic age of Yuma and Folsom artifacts. The writers submit the following palaeontological and geological data which may aid in a better interpretation of the subject. This paper deals with three localities in Nebraska where Yuma and Folsom implements have been found with extinct mammals; namely, the Scottsbluff Bison Quarry, the Sand Hill blow-out sites, and the Sioux County artifact sites.

An increasing realization of the importance of preventing or controlling soil erosion has resulted in numerous scientific investigations. Some of these are concerned with soil characteristics which promote or retard erosivity (Middleton, '30; Middleton et al., '34; Lutz, '34; and Bouyoucos, '35). Many have to do with engineering methods of reducing soil wastage (Bates and Zeasman, '30; Ramser, '30; Roe, '33; and Bartel, '35). During one year's time from October 1934 and extending over into September 1935, an investigator was placed in the field to make a special study of the mountain lion. The agency which was so interested was the Southwestern Conservation League which had received funds from private sources for the purpose of the investigation. The middle Rio Grande Conservancy District was established in 1926, and occupies a portion of the Middle Rio Grande Valley one hundred and twenty-five miles in length and averages three and six tenths miles in width. It extends from White Rock Canyon, fifty miles north of Albuquerque, to the north of line of the Bosque del Apache Grant, fifteen miles south of Socorro. This area, which lies in Sandoval, Bernalillo, Valencia, and Socorro Counties, has an altitude ranging from 4500 feet to 5500 feet. While this report is not to be considered as a complete account of the life habits of Perognathus and while there are certain phases which have not yet been determined, it is hoped that the observations recorded here will constitute a useful contribution to the knowledge of the life history of this species.

There have been a number of investigations dealing with the abortion of essential organs in the imperfect flowers. Ulvin submitted a paper on Abortive Stamens and Carpels in Lychnis alba, Simon described stamen and carpel abortion in Cucumis stativus, Schaffner was able to control sex expression in Arisamea triphyllum and secure sex reversal in Cannabis stiva, Bessey determined the relationship of sex to the age of pollen in Cannabis sativa.

A new disease of red pine has recently been found in southern Connecticut, Rhode Island, eastern Massachusetts, western and central New York, northern New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, central Ohio, and southern Michigan. It is of serious consequence only on plantation-grown red pine, but it also occurs occasionally on eastern white pine. On the former host it is characterized by axially elongated, annual main-stem cankers which are always centered at the nodes. Additional Data On Feeding Habits Of The Short-Eared Owl, Claude Kelly

During January, 1935, forty large owl pellets were collected from the roosting site of a colony of approximately eighty short-eared owls, located along the northwestern marshy edge of White Rock Lake, near Dallas, Texas. The owls had occupied the area for a period of nearly two months during their migration. Each of the forty pellets collected was broken up by washing, the bones removed, placed in numbered boxes and sent to the Division of Wild Life Research, U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey, for analysis.

Plant cover, soil and topography are the major factors concerned in the problem of erosion. During the earlier studies, conducted largely by engineers, chief emphasis was placed upon topography. Following extensive work by pedologists, it is now generally conceded that type of soil is an equally important factor. Intensive studies on the effect of plant cover reveal the extremely important role played by plants in holding the soil against the forces of erosion. 1. The nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus content of 127 newly hatched chicks was determined. 2. Thirty newly hatched chicks were fed accurately known amounts of a good chick mash for 60 days. At the end of the period nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, and fat were determined for each chick. 3. By means of the comparative slaughter test the retention of nitrogen was found to be 37.8 per cent, calcium 43.4 per cent, and phosphorus 27.3 per cent of the respective elements fed. 4. The domestic water supply of Warren County, outside of the city of Bowling Green, is obtained from deep wells and springs. The county is about evenly divided into a southern section of cavernous limestone and a northern section of mixed sandstone and limestone formations.

The wells of the southern cavernous limestone region receive water from unfiltered underground streams and lakes. Most of the wells of the northern region are drilled in sandstone and the water, in a majority of cases, is filtered through porous sandstone and shale.

As early as 1850 many reports of observations of the blind cave animals were made by both scientific and popular writers. Tellkempf, Agassiz, Forbes and Silliman were some of the earlier scientists who studied the eyes of cave animals. Eigenmann made a histological study of the cave vertebrates of America. In a study of Forbesichthys papilliferus, a semi-blind cave fish, Jennie Miller Orr found important structural modifications in the eyes of this species. Pinus edulis, Engelman commonly known as the two-leaved "Nut Pine", belongs to the genus Pinus of the tribe Abietineae which in turn is a member of the Pinnaceae family of the order Coniferales. The Coniferales constitute three-fourths of the present gymnosperms which comprise forty genera and approximately 350 species. This paper contains the results of studies of the woody plants of a selected area in Osage township, Allen county, Kansas, during the spring, summer, and fall of 1934 and spring of 1935. The area is two miles long and approximately three hundred yards wide, located in the northeastern part of Allen county about three miles east of Mildred, Kansas. Introduction

Trematodes are parasitic, unsegmented, flattened (rarely cylindrical) worms. They have ventral, anterior, posterior or median attachment organs. The sense organs are poorly developed. The mouth is terminal or ventral and subterminal. The intestine is usually forked with or without lateral branches. The animals, with few exceptions, are hermaphroditic. The ovary is usually single. They have one, two, or more testes. The development is direct with only one host in the ectoparasitic Monogenea and indirect in the Digenea which have two or more hosts. In spite of the importance of the starch grain from many points of view little work has been done on its nature and development. This fact is interesting since the nature and the development of the starch grain claimed a large share of the attention of the early workers. They observed and described the starch grains from the earliest days of the compound microscope. It was then observed that starch from the different plants showed in many cases marked differences with regard to size, shape and structural markings of the individual grains.
