The Spleen Of The Frog, Clifford F. Moran Apr 1938

The Spleen Of The Frog, Clifford F. Moran

Bachelors’ Theses

Although we of today are living In a relatively advanced state of civilization, there still remains to be solved by man many familiar mysteries. These are found not only in the physical order but in the chemical and biological as well. It seems that the greater strides man takes toward the solution of his difficulties, the more other ones crop up to plague him. With the conquering of such deadly diseases as Diphtheria, Malaria and Scarlet Fever, man once dared to dream about a universe free from sickness. Yet today we find that three others have arisen which are causing …

The Chemical Nature And Distribution Of Black Pigment In Soil, William Sherman Gillam Jan 1938

The Chemical Nature And Distribution Of Black Pigment In Soil, William Sherman Gillam

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

As used in this paper, humus refers to that portion of the soil organic matter peptized by four per cent ammonium hydroxide. That fraction peptized by four per cent ammonium hydroxide, precipitated by acids, and insoluble in alcohol, is designated as black pigment. It is called humic soil by many writers.

Root Distribution Of Trees In Relation To Soil Profile, J. E. Weaver Jan 1938

Root Distribution Of Trees In Relation To Soil Profile, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

One of the pronounced trends in American forestry during the past decade has been the development of a widespread interest in soils. As a consequence to the soil as a part of the environmental complex has been attributed much greater importance than formerly in forest production. In fact, the individual horizons of the soil profile are receiving attention each as a more or less distinct habitat of that highly organized body designated as soil. Just as soil scientists, until recent years, have given inadequate attention to the factor of vegetation in the constitution and development of soils, so too little …

The Influence Of Various Soil Factors Upon Potato Scab Caused By Actinomyces Scabies, R. W. Goss Aug 1937

The Influence Of Various Soil Factors Upon Potato Scab Caused By Actinomyces Scabies, R. W. Goss

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Scab, caused by Actinomyces scabies (Thaxt.) Giiss., is a potato disease of major importance in western Nebraska. Seed treatments are effective in controlling seed-borne scab, but it has been shown that even when healthy or treated seed potatoes are used the disease may be very severe because of infection from the soil. Crop rotation will reduce the incidence of the disease, but the fact that potato scab may cause serious loss in soils never before planted to potatoes indicates that there are numerous factors other than the time interval between potato crops which affect the occurrence of the disease. A …

The Distribution And Utilization Of Agave In The American Southwest, Alvin Russell Grove Jul 1937

The Distribution And Utilization Of Agave In The American Southwest, Alvin Russell Grove

Biology ETDs

It is the purpose of this thesis to show in a comparative way the importance of Agave sp. for food, drink, fiber, etc., among various tribes comprising the American Southwest.

The problem is important from ethnological and ethnobiological standpoints. Through a study of man's attempt to utilize for food, etc., articles which grew at hand, one can better understand him. The methods of plant utilization show the effect of the environment on the man as well as his attempts to adjust himself to it or adjust the environment to himself. The problem, in addition, is an ecological one, showing the …

Relation Of Height At Withers And Chest Girth To Live Weight Of Dairy Cattle Of Different Breeds And Ages, H. P. Davis, R. F. Morgan, Samuel Brody, A. C. Ragsdale Jul 1937

Relation Of Height At Withers And Chest Girth To Live Weight Of Dairy Cattle Of Different Breeds And Ages, H. P. Davis, R. F. Morgan, Samuel Brody, A. C. Ragsdale

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The size of a dairy cow is important from the standpoint of feed consumption and economy of production and also as an indication of the expected size of offspring. The ultimate disposal of dairy cattle is for beef, and the measure of returns is based upon size and condition. A method for the determination of the approximate weights of dairy females, where scales are not available, is needed. Measurements of dairy cattle which show development and skeletal growth by ages in relationship to weight are presented here for four different dairy breeds.

A Histological And Functional Study Of The Skin Of The Frog, Oscar Stern Jul 1937

A Histological And Functional Study Of The Skin Of The Frog, Oscar Stern

Bachelors’ Theses

In recent years much has been written on the skin of the frog, however, it seems that little has been done to correlate the morphological and physiological aspects of the skin. The literature reveals that considerable work has been done on the common laboratory frog Rana pipiens.

A Study Of The Relation Of Temperature To Antibody Formation In Cold-Blooded Animals, Earl C. Mcdaniel Jun 1937

A Study Of The Relation Of Temperature To Antibody Formation In Cold-Blooded Animals, Earl C. Mcdaniel

Biology ETDs

It is an established fact that when warm-blooded animals are inoculated with foreign protein, in a great many instances they become immune, due to the formation of antibodies specific for the protein injected. In warm-blooded animals the body temperature is constant. The question naturally arises as to what the situation would be with regard to antibody formation in a cold-blooded animal where body temperature is not constant; also what part, if any, the temperature of the body would have to do with the antibody formation.

In a careful review of the literature practically nothing could be found in having direct …

Studies On Vegetative And Sexual Reproduction Of The Dandelion (Taraxacum Officinale Weber), Alice Shortle

Biology ETDs

The dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber) is one of the most persistent weeds found in lawns in New Mexico. Much work has been carried in the United States to find an effective means of eradication or control of this pest. However, there is some weakness in every method thus far suggested.

Bulletin No. 277 - A Study Of Utah's Winter Range: Composition Of Forage Plants And Use Of Supplements, A. C. Esplin, J. E. Greaves, L. A. Stoddart Jun 1937

Bulletin No. 277 - A Study Of Utah's Winter Range: Composition Of Forage Plants And Use Of Supplements, A. C. Esplin, J. E. Greaves, L. A. Stoddart

UAES Bulletins

Range forage provides the foundation for the maintenance ration available for most sheep wintered in Utah. The nature and amount of supplemental concentrate or roughage needed with this forage to provide an adequate and efficient ration for sheep naturally depends on the nature and amount of range forage available. Present uncertainty as to the relative merits of the various available supplements originates largely through a lack of definite knowledge as to the composition and feeding value of the various range plants that go to make up the range-forage supply on the particular range in question.

Salivary Gland Chromosomes Of Drosophila Melanogaster And The Bar Duplication In The Heterozygous Fly, Gertrude H. Tromp Jun 1937

Salivary Gland Chromosomes Of Drosophila Melanogaster And The Bar Duplication In The Heterozygous Fly, Gertrude H. Tromp

Bachelors’ Theses

in view or the fact that salivary gland chromosomes are being so thoroughly studied at the present time, it is interesting to notice that as early as 1881 Balbiani reported the chromosomes in the Chironomus fly. He interpreted the "bands" which are of such importance to the cytologists today, as disks of chromatic material. The achromatic material he called "zwischensubstanz" or as it is now termed the matrix. Leydig (1883) also worked with the Chironomus fly. He thought that the "bands" were similar to muscle fiber striation. Carnoy (1884) believed the chromosomes were hollow cylinders and the chromatin arranged to …

The Effects Of X-Rays Upon The Roots Of Zea Mays, Bernard Louis Wolfe Jun 1937

The Effects Of X-Rays Upon The Roots Of Zea Mays, Bernard Louis Wolfe

Bachelors’ Theses

Since. the discovery of X-rays by Rontgen in 1895, the majority of published papers dealing with the influence of these rays on plant life have considered their general effects on physiological processes including rate of seed germination and growth, respiration, and movements. A large number of investigators have worked on the morphological and cytological aspects while comparatively few workers have been interested in the histological effects of the stimulated tissues. The purpose of this thesis is to show the histological, morphological, and cytological effects of X-rays upon the root tips or the Zea Mays as well as the effects these …

The Histology Of The Stomach Of The Frog Rana Pipiens, Eugene Anton Kampmann Jun 1937

The Histology Of The Stomach Of The Frog Rana Pipiens, Eugene Anton Kampmann

Bachelors’ Theses

The common grass or leopard frog, Rana pipiens, lives in or near fresh-water lakes, ponds, and streams, and is distributed over the North American continent except on the Pacific slope. The frog has both scientific and commercial value. Frogs legs are highly prized by the epicure. In the laboratory, the frog is used in elementary courses in zoology to illustrate the characteristics of the vertebrates. Holmes very clearly states the present scientific value of the frog, "For a long time the frog has been a favorite object for the study of animal structure and function. Probably no species except …

The Histology Of The Small And Large Intestine Of Rana Pipens, Chester R. Mantey

Bachelors’ Theses

The Frog in past years and in most recent years, has been used to a great extent in the experimental sciences. In the field of physiology, the Frog becomes a great factor for experimental purpose. In addition, the science of pharmacology also makes use of the Frog in determining the actions of many drugs. But, this thesis will endeavor to take up the histology of an organ of Rana pipens, thus limiting the subject matter to this particular phase. It would only be proper at this time, to cite some of the important early workers in Histology. Bichat (1800) …

A Proximate Analysis Of Some Wisconsin Grown Varieties Of Soybeans, Herman Paas Jr.

Bachelors’ Theses

Within the last ten years there has been a constantly growing demand for soybeans. This demand is a result of the many new uses to which the by-products of the bean have been put. At present there are many varieties of soybeans on the market and each of these varieties have different compositions and hence have different qualities. Chemists are working on these different varieties and are trying to find the variety that is best suited for certain purposes. Wisconsin, which is primarily an agricultural state, will be among the leaders in raising the soybean. The purpose of this investigation …

Cross-Section Anatomy Of The Male Frog (Rana Catesbiana) : A Transverse Section Through The Region Of The Eighth Vertebra, Arthur L. Guepe May 1937

Cross-Section Anatomy Of The Male Frog (Rana Catesbiana) : A Transverse Section Through The Region Of The Eighth Vertebra, Arthur L. Guepe

Bachelors’ Theses

At the present time there does not exist a complete cross-section anatomical study of the common bull frog, Rana catesbiana. In fact, there has been very little mention in literature of any cross-section anatomy of any particular animal. However, there has been some work of this nature done in the study of human anatomy, especially the important publication of Eycleshymer and Schoemaker (1917), and in a small measure in the anatomy of the rabbit. This lack of literature on this certain topic, however, does not mean that the author had any intentions of presenting a complete cross-section study of …

The Microflora Of Milk Drawn Aseptically From The U.S.A.C. Dairy Herd, Lewis W. Jones May 1937

The Microflora Of Milk Drawn Aseptically From The U.S.A.C. Dairy Herd, Lewis W. Jones

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Early studies on the bacterial content of milk were made mainly to satisfy the interest of people who wished to determine the various materials that contained bacteris. Soon the value of bacterial counts, as an indication of the general conditions of production, of handling, and of the keeping qualities of milk, became evident and bacterial counts were used to obtain information concerning these problems. Numbers of bacteria in milk have been used also in the studies of the desirable and undesirable changes in milk.

In the last few years our citizenry has been made more conscious of the presence and …

The Plankton Of The Bear River Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, Utah Seasonal Distribution Of Organisms, George Piranian May 1937

The Plankton Of The Bear River Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, Utah Seasonal Distribution Of Organisms, George Piranian

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the summer of 1932, an investigation of some biological, physical, and chemical conditions at the Bear River Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, Utah, was begun at the Utah State Agricultural College to determine some of the factors governing the biological productivity of brackish-water marshes. Unfortunately, lack of funds made it impossible to continue work beyond the first season.

In 1936, the Wild Life Experiment Station at the Utah State Agricultural College appropriated a fund for a cooperative project between the Station and the Department of Botany at the same institution. This project, planned to be continued by various graduate fellows over …
