Although grazing of livestock has been a practice and a profession of man almost from his beginning only recently has range management reached anything approaching a pre~ cise science. Although ' trials and errors over the years brought to light much practical methodology for assuring high production from grazing land, still it remained for the plant physiologist and ecologist to find the whys and wherefores, and to advance new methods and new thoughts which promise to increase productivity still further and at the same time maintain the great range resource.

Studies On The Riboflavin Content Of Cheese, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The riboflavin concentrations of twenty-seven kinds of cheeses and cheese spreads were determined by feeding these products to rats whose body stores of riboflavin had been depleted by being fed a riboflavin-deficient diet. Fifteen experiments were made in which 1,223 rats were used. The results obtained varied from 13.5 to 1.2 micrograms of riboflavin per gram of cheese (or spread). The samples of Goat, Velveeta, Mel-0-Pure, and Liederkranz had the highest concentrations of riboflavin while the samples of Cream and Pimento Cream had the lowest concentrations.

Present day knowledge concerning the liver is derived from many sources and the accumulation of many methods of investigation. Sugar, which is needed by the body for energy, is stored in the liver as glycogen. Claude Bernard (26), an eminent physiologist, was the first to suspect that carbohydrates were stored in the liver. Faulty glycogen synthesis and hydrolysis results in one of our most widespread diseases, diabetes. One of the botanists first to grow fern gametophytes from spores whicch were sown on moist clay was Farlow (1874), a student of the famous botanist, DeBary, professor of Botany at the University of Strassburg in Germany. Farlow sowed the spores of Ptteris cretica var. albo-lineata on moist clay placed into small flower pots. Watering was accomplished from the top. There was no sterilization of the culture medium. The gametophytes of this fern were also grown under the same conditions by DeBary (1878). Steil (1919a) grew the prothalli of Ptteris sulcata and Ptteris cretica var. albo-lineata in the same manner …

Native pastures in eastern Nebraska and adjacent states have undergone profound changes as a result of drought. Bluestems (Andropogon) and associated grasses have been thinned and weakened, although recovery has been marked since 1941. In many pastures they were replaced by western wheat grass (Agropyron smithii) or other invading species. In nearly all, wheat grass now occurs in considerable abundance. Kentucky bluegrass (Paa pratensis), into which many overgrazed native pastures had degenerated, was almost completely killed by the drought, or greatly damaged as in western Iowa. The war years have made new demands on Station personnel and facilities. With fewer staff members and less adequate equipment the Station has not only carried on the regular project work, but the research program has been expanded, and numerous activities resulting from the emergency have been assumed.

The Station has taken a leading place in the victory food production program. Each year it has assumed the lead in a study of the wartime agricultural production capacity of the state and desirable crop and livestock adjustments studying all the agricultural assets and the ability to produce various crops.

A survey of published material reveals relatively little information concerning the nutritional physiology of Penicillium notatum Westl. on synthetic media. Metabolism studies of P. notatum on various media have appeared to be incidental to the more pressing problem of producing penicillin quickly and in quantity. Fleming (1929) originally used a nutrient broth non-synthetic in nature. The Oxford group (Abraham et al., 1941) then adopted a modification of the so-called Czapek-Dox synthetic medium which supplies nitrogen as sodium nitrate and glucose as carbohydrate. Hobby, Meyer, and Chaffee (1942) suggested that brown sugar be substituted for glucose in this nutrient, with …

The herbaceous undercover on much of the aspen range in the Intermountain region is badly deteriorated. These areas, naturally highly productive, when revegetated can contribute greatly towards a much needed supply of range forage. One of the major obstacles to successful seeding has been the difficulty of getting the seeds covered with soil since both standing and fallen trees interfere with the use of drills, harrows, or other machinery. A cyto-gentical study was attempted of the males of the Ichneumonoid wasp Habrobracon juglandis (ashm.) The larval of this wasp are parasitic on the larval of a flour moth Ephestid kuekniella (zeller). The males of this wasp were disected and slides were made of the testes. Different staining techniques were used in order to determine which ones would give the best results.
