The thesis investigates the following problems: (1) whether or not there is any correlation between temperature change and respiratory quotient, (2) whether or not respiratory inhibition by cyanides is influenced by temperature, and (3) whether or not the cytochrome-cytochrome oxidase type of respiratory system is concerned chiefly with carbohydrate metabolism in Pelomyxa carolinensis.

Examination of material of a species of Hymenolepis collected by Rausch from several species of bats taken near Marysville, Ohio, revealed that it was new. A series of specimens of the same species was collected in 1942 at Ames, Iowa, by Dr. Robert Roudabush. The new species, Hymenolepis roudabushi, is described.

Laboratory and field tests were conducted to determine the effects of different food plants on fecundity, adult longevity and larval development of the tuber flea beetle, Epitrix tuberis Gentner. All food plants tested were those upon which the overwintered beetles commonly feed in the spring following emergence from hibernation.

Parasites of the muskrat (Ondatra zibethica) have received considerable study, but little in Ohio. From March 20, 1943, to March 22, 1945, 70 Ohio muskrat carcasses were examined, most of them being obtained from trappers by Merrill C. Gilfillan, Leader of the Pittman-Robertson Muskrat Project in Ohio. The specimens were from seven localities: Lake Erie Marshes (28); Killbuck Valley Marsh (17, lacking liver and lungs); Walnut Creek (19) and Whetstone Creek (2), (Morrow County); Buckeye Lake (1); Little Scioto River, Marion County (1); and Union County near Marysville (2).

The important subfamily Dynastinae has for some time been relatively neglected, taxonomically speaking, and only in the past few years have new species been described or the larval characters of many species better characterized. In all collections I have seen,numerous United States species are grossly misidentified, and it is hoped that the present papers will help to rectify this condition.

Ritcher's paper (1944) is an excellent contribution to the immature stages of these insects. His title, however, Dynastinae of the United States, is very misleading, because this paper includes only a small proportion of the described United States species, and …

Advantage was taken of an opportunity to study the effects of penicillin on Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, the causative organism of swine erysipelas. Owing to the fact that swine cannot readily be infected with erysipelas by artificial methods, pigeons which are highly susceptible to the disease, were selected to serve as experimental animals. It was the purpose of these studies to ascertain whether or not the swine erysipelas bacillus is sensitive to the drug and incidentally to determine the possibility of finding application of penicillin in the treatment of swine.

A survey of the activity of wild animals in connection with range conditions and range management is greatly needed in western Kansas. To have a well-managed range one should have an understanding of the ecological factors which benefit or deplete the native vegetation that is essential for production of livestock. The impact of grazing, and the effect of changes in edaphic and atmospheric environment on the prairie have further emphasized the importance of a cover of grass in preventing erosion.

Field and laboratory tests conducted in Nebraska showed DDT to be more effective than any other material yet tested against potato insect pests. Records were obtained on tuber flea beetles, Epitrix tuberis, potato psyllids, Paratrioza cockerelli, potato leafhoppers, Empoasca fabae, green peach aphids, Myzus persicae, Lygus elisus, Chlamydatus associatus, Aceratagallia uhleri and Macrosteles divisus. DDT remained effective against potato psyllids and potato leafhoppers under field conditions for a relatively long period of time. Populations of certain beneficial insects, such as Nabis spp., Orius spp. and lady beetles were found to be significantly reduced …

Although much work has been done histologically with the vertebrates, very little seems to have been done on the intestinal tract of the reptile. This is especially true of the snakes, despite the abundant sources of material. Reptiles are one of the first classes of vertebrates in which there is a distinction made between small and large intestine. Histology textbooks devote only a few lines to the histology of the reptilian small intestine. This is the third in a series of investigations of the comparative histology of the digestive tract of Thamnophis sirtalis, the common green snake. Comparatively little recent work of this nature upon any of the class Reptilia, and especially upon the order Ophidia, seems to have been undertaken. Kendall(1940) makes no mention of Ophidia, but discusses briefly the digestive system of the lizard, limiting his treatment of the esophagus to a few lines. The problem involved in this experiment was the application of the Feulgen Reaction to a number of flatworms and small ascarid worms, in an attempt to ascertain whether or not a practical staining technique, (showing clear differentiation of nuclear material, etc., from the surrounding cuticle and cytoplasm) -- may be developed, by staining and mounting them in toto. The Feulgen Reaction was used in this experiment, not as a specific indicator for thymonucleic acid, but rather as a cytological stain.
