Experimental production of liver cancer by means of azo dyes is a standardized and convenient method for study of the cancer problem. The rat is the animal of choice for this type of experimentation because this animal is readily susceptible to liver carcinogenesis upon being fed azo dyes. Mice are only partially susceptible and rabbits and guinea pigs will not develop cancer of the liver by ingestion of the azo dyes (E. C. Miller and J. A. Miller, 1947, p.473). The liver, likewise, is an appropriate organ for study. Enzymologists and cytologists today regard the liver cell as the best …

The Collembola Of New Mexico With Especial Reference To The North-Central Part Of The State, Harold George Scott

The is one of the first faunistic studies to be completed in New Mexico and one of the first comprehensive analyses of the ecological distribution of the species of Collembola in as large and varied an area as New Mexico. One hundred fifty-two Collembola species, of which 24 are described as new, are recorded from New Mexico. In addition four species, of which one is described as new, are recorded for the first time from Colorado. Prior to the present study, only four species of Collembola were recorded from New Mexico.

A survey of the literature showed that considerable information has been published on the effects of dispersing agents on the viscosity of coating colors and clay slurries. There seemed to be little work done on the effect of the dispersing agent on any other of the properties of the coating.

I. The Problem

Statement of the problem. It was the purpose of this investigation to undertake a field study in Athens Township, Calhoun County, State of Michigan in order to (1) determine the ecological factors necessary for maple sap production; (2) relate the extent to which the natural resource is being used; and (3) determine economic and social values to the syrup producers. The information was compiled through the sue of interviews, questionnaires, research, and participation in a community project.

A Morphological Study Of Some North American Sitona (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), George J. Kidd

This study was undertaken to identify, if possible, some morphological characteristics of the U. S. Sitona species that would help simplify the classification of this difficult group. Because of extreme difficulty in obtaining positively identified specimens of all species reported, the scope was limited to eight identified species and one unidentified series. External structures studied include mouth parts, appendages, eyes, wings, and genitalia. The spermathecae were the only internal structures analyzed. Mandibular profiles were compared throughout the species represented and variations were noted. Labia and maxillae were observed but no distinctive differences were noticed. The Sandia and Manzano Mountain area is divided into communities based mainly on the major types of vegetation present. These communities and their relationships to biotic provinces, life zones, and habitats are described in the section that deals with the description of the area. Several collecting sites were established in each of these communities, and an effort was made to set traps in all available types of mammal habitats.

Staphylococcal synovitis is a pathological condition of birds involving primarily the wing and leg joints. It is frequently referred to as arthritis, osteoarthritis, bursitis, hock disease, staphylococcosis, and weak leg.

The disease has been reported throughout various parts of the world as having been found in a great variety of avian hosts including pheasants, chickens, pigeons, canaries, geese, ducks, grouse, and turkeys.

Miner (1945) presented results of a survey made on turkey diseases in Sanpete County, Utah, which indicated staphylococcal synovitis to be responsible for the greatest numbers of deaths. His report cites this infection as having been found in …

This paper includes data concerning the influence of relative humidity, temperature, and percentage of engorgement on the pre-oviposition period, oviposition period, post-oviposition period, and incubation period of the tick Dermacentor parumapertus Neumann. The influence of the percentage of engorgement on the oviposition period, oviposition rate, and egg number is considered. Data on the disposition and number of eggs in nature are discussed.

Phosphorus has long been recognized by agriculturists as being one of the elements essential for plant growth. Although the total phosphorus content of a soil may be high, the amount of phosphate actually available for plant growth is often low. Many agencies such as inherent low solubilities of phosphate compounds, adsorption on Ca C03, adsorption in the diffuse double layer of clay micelles, and chemical precipitation of phosphate which refers to the removal of phosphate ions from solution and their chemical bonding to the solid phase have been studied to explain the lack of phosphate availability.

Any method used in aging fish must fulfill certain requirements to be satisfactory. If the method is inaccurate, naturally little reliance can be placed upon its use. If considerable study of the method and much practice are required before accurate readings can be obtained, the method will not come into widespread use. The requirements of an aging method, then are that it must be accurate and comparatively easy. The fact that shoots grow upwards and roots grow downwards is common knowledge. These recognized tendencies are called "geotropic reactions". We apply the term, "positive geotropism" to the tendency of roots growing downwards; meaning that they respond in a positive manner to the pull of gravity. To the response of shoots we apply the term, "negative geotropism", which signifies that their growth is away from the pull of gravity.
