Ultraviolet Induction Properties Of Salmonella Potsdam Bacteriophages, Berney Roy Neufeld

Three lysogenic strains of Salmonella potsdam were studied to determine whether or not they were inducible by ultraviolet light under certain conditions. The strains examined were SP3, SP4, and SP9. SP3 and SP4 contained a single prophage each and SP9 contained two prophages P9a and P9c. The ultraviolet light sensitivities of each of these lysogenic strains and the indicator strain SP2 were also examined.

All three lysogenic strains were found to be inducible. SP3 was induced an average of 3.59% and SP4 an average of 2.21%. The difference between the induction percentages of SP3 and SP4 was not statistically significant. …

A biological sampling program in the lower Caloosahatchee River and Estuary by District and consultant biologists was authorized by the Office, Chief of Engineers on 7 May 1957. This survey of the effects of Lake Okeechobee discharge and local runoff through the Caloosahatchee River on the fishes and animals of this Gulf estuary was a continuation of a previously authorized study of Lake releases to the Atlantic Coast (Gunter, 1959).

The Distribution Of Phytoplankton Along A 140 Mile Transect In The Chesapeake Bay, Harold G. Marshall

The composition of phytoplankton progressively changed in the surface samples taken between Norfolk, Virginia and Cambridge, Maryland. These was an inverse relationship between the numbers of phytoplankters and zooplankters in the transect samples. Vertical stratification of the plankton was studied at two 24-hr, stations at the Great Wicomlco and Patuxent Rivers. The vertical centers of zooplankton and phytoplankton populations fluctuated over the study period and evidence is given to support a grazing phenomenon. Large concentrations of nannoplankters were found in all the plankton samples taken and is attributed to the collection procedure using the Van Dorn sampler.

The Annual Distribution And Stratification Of Phytoplankton At Aurora Lake, Portage County, Ohio, Harold G. Marshall

A 13-month study of a hard-water lake in northeast Ohio has provided a quantitative and qualitative record of the seasonal changes of the phytoplankton. Maximum production occurred during the summer and winter periods. The summer pulse was dominated by the cyanophyte species: Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena spiroides, A. circinalis, and Aphanizomenon flosaquae. The dominants of the winter pulse were the diatoms Fragilaria crotomensis and Asterionella formosa, which formed separate peaks under an ice cover in December and January, respectively. Mechanisms which control formation of corpora lutea during the estrous cycle, and particularly factors affecting their persistence and regression in various reproductive stages, have been of considerable interest to physiologists concerned with developing methods for control of the estrous cycle in domestic animals. Some recent reviews on control of ovarian function are those by Chester Jones and Ball (30), Anderson et al. (9) and Short (121).

Truly effective estrous cycle synchronization techniques are of great potential value to commercial producers of beef and dairy cattle, sheep, and swine. Many commercial beef cattlemen recognize the merits of using outstanding sires through artificial insemination (AI) to produce greater numbers of faster gaining cattle having the most desirable carcass characteristics. The relatively high heritability of feedlot gains makes this idea particularly attractive. Nevertheless, progress in attaining this goal has been rather slow, mainly because of the practical problems involved in breeding range cattle artificially and the low conception rates frequently obtained. The studies which form the basis of this paper were undertaken to widen the general range of information on the avian kidney and its associated osseous cradle. In addition to the discussion, numerous photographs and diagrams are submitted to clarify and support the text. The present paper deals with with kidney and pelvic girdle of two species of sparrow: Zonotrichia leucophrys and Passer domesticus.

1. The nominate subspecies of E. granulosus (Batsch, 1786) is redesignated from the type locality, Europe.

2. Five subspecies of E. granulosus are described from South African carnivores: E. g. granulosus, E. g. africanus, E. g. felidis, E. g. lycaontis and E. g. ortleppi.

3. E. g. granulosus has so far only been recovered from the Transvaal; E. g. ortleppi appears to be restricted to the Transvaal; E. g. africanus occurs in the Orange Free State and the Transvaal; E. g. lycaontis and E. g. felidis like their definitive hosts are restricted to the Transvaal.

Two new species of Microsporidea, Plistophora salmonae from steelhead and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and Plistophora cepedianae from gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) are described. Schizonts to spores of P. cepedianae were found at one time within the same cyst, while only sporonts and spores of P. salmonae were found within the cyst. An illustrated synopsis of the known Microsporidea of freshwater and euryhaline fishes is given.

In March, 1962 this laboratory received some goldfish for disease diagnosis from Mr. Richard Rice, Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. Seven of 29 fish examined were infected with Eimeria. These fish had long, whitish, opaque fecal casts hanging from the anus. The casts were composed almost entirely of oocysts. When shed, they sank to the bottom and looked somewhat like "spent" tapeworms (Figs. 1, 2). The infected fish were very lethargic and their intestines were swollen with contained fluid. Although I believe that the Eimeria is pathogenic, a heavy infection of other parasites made this difficult to determine. These fish had apparently …

There are many advantages which result from synchronizing the estrous period in a ewe flock. In situations where the ewes are not hand bred to the ram, the synchronization of estrus makes the application of artificial insemination (AI) techniques more efficient. Detection of estrus usually is more reliable in a synchronized flock. Only 3 to 4 days are needed to detect estrus in 90 percent of a synchronized flock, whereas 16 to 18 days are normally required. The Las Vegas ground-water basin as described in this report includes the southern part of Indian Spring Valley, Three Lakes Valley, the northern half of Ivanpah Valley, and Las Vegas Valley. These valleys in part are inferred to form a hydrologic unit that includes an area of about 3,000 square miles in the southern part of Clark County, Nev.

The valleys forming the Las Vegas ground-water basin are broad structural depressions surrounded by mountains. The climate of the region is arid, and precipitation in the basin lowlands rarely exceeds 5 inches per year. Drainage is interior except for occasional Hood …

Preliminary observations of Eudorina cultures verified the presence of morphologically distinct forms of these colonial flagellates. Colonies were observed which contained fewer than the sixteen, thirty-two or sixty-four cells given as the definitive taxonomic characteristic of Eudorina. Some of these colonies were more compactly arranged with a reduction in the amount of inter-cellular matrix present. It was the purpose of this study (1) to determine whether differences could be detected in the biochemical composition of small compact Eudorina species and of Pandorina species and (2) to determine whether biochemical differences could be detected between the small and the larger forms …

Life Cycle And Development Of Prosthorhynchus Formosus (Van Cleave, 1918) Travassos, 1926, An Acanthocephalan Parasite Of Birds, Gerald D. Schmidt, O. Wilford Olsen

The life cycle of Prosthorhynchus formosus (Van Cleave, 1918) Travassos, 1926 is presented. The terrestrial isopods Armadillidium vulgare, Porcellio laevis, and P. scaber served as experimental intermediate hosts, and chickens and turkeys as experimental definitive hosts. After ingestion of the eggs by the isopod, the acanthor emerges from its shells within 15 minutes to 2 hours, enters the gut wall of its host, and remains there 15 to 25 days. It then migrates to the hemocoel and develops through the acanthella stage to the infective cystacanth by the 60th to 65th day of infection.

On morphological and zoogeographical grounds, discussed in the present paper, it is concluded that the narrow-skulled vole in North America, previously designated Microtus (Stenocranius) miurus Osgood, is conspecific with the Eurasian M. (Stenocranius) gregalis Pallas. Fourteen subspecies in Eurasia and 5 in North America are now recognized, but it is probable that the number in Eurasia will be reduced through future investigation. The Eurasian subspecies of this vole comprise two major groups, of which one occupies the tundra zone and the other occurs across central Asia below latitude 60° N; their geographic ranges are largely separate …

This study examines the role of government at the state level in the allocation of land and water resources which supply recreational products for which there is economic demand. Two approaches are employed with special reference to South Dakota. One approach considers the productivities of resources which provide goods and services according to consumer choice. The other approach analyzes policy decisions and the means by which society, organized through government, is able to move toward a goal of maximization of satisfactions.
