Serum Lipids And Urinary Estrogens Of Non-Pregnant Menstruating Young Women, Shiao-Fan Lee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Twelve university women students served as experimental subjects in a study of the serum lipids and urinary estrogens of healthy nonpregnant menstruating young women, who were living under their usual conditions.
The subjects maintained constant weight on their ordinary diets during the entire study period. Antecubital blood and 24-hour urine specimens were collected on certain days which represented different stages of the menstrual cycle. Quantitative analyses were made on serum total cholesterol, lipid phosphorus (phospholipids), triglycerides and total lipids. Gas-liquid chromatographic analysis of the fatty acid composition of each serum lipid component was also made. Urinary estrone, 17β- estradiol and …
Effects Of Zinc Deficiency On Hemoglobin, Red Cell Counts, Red Cell Fragility And Circulating And Storage Levels Of Zinc, Iron And Copper In The Rat, Rekha R. Dalvi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Three experiments were conducted to study the effect of zinc deficiency on hemoglobin, red cell counts, red cell fragility, storage of erythropoietic minerals in livers and circulating levels of zinc, iron and copper in the rat.
In the experiment 1, twenty weanling rats were divided into four groups. Two groups were fed zinc-deficient diet ( <0.5 ppm); and two groups, zinc-supplemented diet (50 ppm). The rats in the first and third groups were bled three times a week (bled), however the rats in remaining groups were bled once a week (non-bled). All rats received ad libitum food.
Mean food intake per day was considerably less for zinc-deficient rats than that for zinc-supplemented rats. Approximately 2 to 3 times as much food was required for each gram of body weight gained by the zinc-deficient group as by the controls.
In the experiment 2, …
0.5>Polymerization Of Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Fabian Crespo V.
Polymerization Of Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Fabian Crespo V.
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An organic chemical condensing reagent, 1-cyclohexyl-3-(2-morpholinoethyl)-carbodiimide metho-p-toluene sulfonate (CMC) was tested for effectiveness in inducing polymerization of short lengths of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) nucleoprotein particles isolated from systemically infected Turkish tobacco leaves. It appeared that the chemical induced the formation of phosphodiester linkages between the viral RNA helices in the joining nucleoprotein fragments. Because the polymerization reaction liberates a hydroxyl ion with each joining event the kinetics of the polymerization can be followed with time using a pH meter. The number of hydroxyl ions liberated is equal to the number of polymerizations. Physical evidence of polymerization was obtained by …
Field Observations On The Biology Of Mimulus Guttatus Dc. In Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Barbara L. Rice
Field Observations On The Biology Of Mimulus Guttatus Dc. In Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Barbara L. Rice
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The response of Mimulus guttatus DC. to its unusual thermal habitat in Yellowstone Park is described. Although populations within the park are usually observed in thermal areas, no evidence indicates that they are restricted to thermal soils. The median temperature for soils of natural populations is about 26 C. Populations are distributed in both acidic and basic thermal areas. Success of the species in the thermal soils is facilitated by rapid vegetative growth, allowing fluctuation in population size or position with changes in soil temperature. Water availability is a critical limiting factor in distribution and lack of water tends to …
An Electrophysiological Study Of The Oral Plate Sensory Organs Of The Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera L.), Rodney R. Seeley
An Electrophysiological Study Of The Oral Plate Sensory Organs Of The Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera L.), Rodney R. Seeley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The oral plate sense organs of the honey bee, Apis mellifera L., have been investigated employing an electrophysiological technique which allows simultaneous stimulation and recording.
The results of the study present evidence that the four bipolar sense cells innervating the sensory papillae on the oral surface of the hypopharynx are chemoreceptors. The sensory papillae respond to cations, glucose, water, and amino acids. Evidence for the absence of a mechanosensory cell is presented. The data concerning the sensory structures agree with the current theories of chemoreception.
Isolation And Characterization Of Autosomal Male Sterile Mutants In Drosophila Melanogaster, Lynn J. Romrell
Isolation And Characterization Of Autosomal Male Sterile Mutants In Drosophila Melanogaster, Lynn J. Romrell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In order to study the genetic control of spermiogenesis, recessive, male-sterile, autosomal mutants of Drosophila melanogaster were induced with ethyl methanesulfonate. A total of 31 mutants were recovered, 15 of which were located on the second chromosome and 16 on the third chromosome. Eight second- and 6 third-chromosome mutants demonstrating sterility in all homozygous males were used for further analysis.
Complementation tests showed that 2 of the 8 second chromosome mutants (and none of the 6 third chromosome mutants) were noncomplementing, indicating that two of the mutants produced were alleles of the same locus. Mapping of the second chromosome mutants …
Water In Relation To The Establishment Of Chukar Partridge In Utah Deserts, James R. Messerli
Water In Relation To The Establishment Of Chukar Partridge In Utah Deserts, James R. Messerli
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effects artificial watering devices (guzzlers) have on chukar (Alectoris graeca) populations were studied in Juab County, Utah.
The effect of water was determined by a comparision of chukar populations near guzzlers with water to guzzlers without water. The closure of two guzzlers had a pronounced effect on the distribution of chukars and the number of chukars decreased significantly at the two guzzlers after their closure.
Water concentrated the chukars, therefore, influencing their activities. During the water-critical period, between 1 July and 1 October, frequent, possibly daily, trips were made to water by chukars.
Reproduction and chick survival …

Studies were conducted in a mountain habitat to determine the effects of altered light and temperature upon the natural growth and/or carbohydrate cycles of Claytonia lanceolata during the period of winter snow cover. Treatments included natural control, light exclusion, and temperature alteration by insulation and by heating for a brief period. Monthly measurements were made of soil temperature (upper 12 cm), shoot development, soluble sugar, and soluble starch. The quantity and quality of light penetrating the snow cover was also determined.
About 0.0052% of the available visible light (400-750 nm) penetrated 70 cm of snow and 0.02% penetrated 50 cm …
The Regulatory Effects Of Certain S-Triazine Compounds On The Nutritive Composition Of Seeds And Leaves Of The Pea (Pisum Sativum L.) And Sweet Corn (Zea Mays L.) And Responses Of Metabolic Systems, Ming-Tsung Wu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The study was conducted to investigate the influence of eight s-triazine compounds--simazine, atrazine, terbutryne, GS-14254, propazine, prometryne, prometone, and ametryne--on the composition of seeds of peas and sweet corn through soil and foliar application. In order to understand the mechanism of the effects of these a-triazines on protein accumulation, the responses of the metabolic systems of pea and sweet corn seedlings to s-triazine treatment was studied with emphasis on the stimulation of certain enzymes, and the changes in the rates of incorporation of 14C-L-leucine (U) into soluble protein. In addition, the effect of simazine on the ultrastructure …

Influence Of Temperature Of Incubation And Type Of Growth Medium On Pigmentation In Serratia Marcescens, Robert P. Williams, Cora L. Gott, S M. Qadri, Randolph H. Scott
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Maximal amounts of prodigiosin were synthesized in either minimal or complete medium after incubation of cultures at 27 C for 7 days. Biosynthesis of prodigiosin began earlier and the range of temperature for formation was greater in complete medium. No prodigiosin was formed in either medium when cultures were incubated at 38 C; however, after a shift to 27 C, pigmentation ensued, provided the period of incubation at 38 C was not longer than 36 hr for minimal medium or 48 hr for complete medium. Washed, nonpigmented cells grown in either medium at 38 C for 72 hr could synthesize …

Low Temperature Modification Of Cell Ultrastructure In Hardy And Nonhardy Grass Species, Steven L. Kimball
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Studies were conducted to determine the influence of different temperatures (25, 10, 0, or -5 C) upon plant growth and cell ultrastructure, and to determine if physical changes within cells might block growth activities even though individual biochemical processes were potentially active.
Secale cereale L. was found to be most hardy, followed by Cynodon dactylon (L) Pers. and Paspalum notatum Flugge, whose responses were quite similar. Secale grew normally at 25 and 10 C, with reduced activity at 0 C and a slight delay before resuming normal growth when placed at 25 C again. All three species were killed at …
Characterization Of A Soluble Form Of Structural Protein From Neurospora Crassa, Clarence Denis Perterson
Characterization Of A Soluble Form Of Structural Protein From Neurospora Crassa, Clarence Denis Perterson
Theses and Dissertations
The study of membrane assembly has, until now, consisted of fractionating a membrane into its components or of assembling model membranes from non-physiological components. A native precursor to membranes was obtained as a quasi-crystalline material. It was the purpose of this work to develop the appropriate techniques for characterizing the material as well as to carry out the characterization. The results of the characterization indicate the quasi-crystalline material contains a single protein, structural protein. This protein is in two forms which may reflect two sequential steps in membrane assembly. One form is solubilized in 2-chloroethanol and isolated by gel filtration. …

A Taxonomic Revision Of The Weevil Genus Tychius Germar In America North Of Mexico (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Wayne E. Clark
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
A study of morphological characters of 4,000 adult weevils used in preparing a key and descriptions indicates there are fifteen North American species in the genus Tychius Germar. Adults occur on plants in the genera Astragalus, Baptisia, Hedysarum, Lotus, Lupinus, and Oxytropis.
The genus is divided into two species groups. The T. sordidus group appears to have representatives in the Old World fauna, but the T. semisquamosus group is probably native to North America. New names, Tychius caesius, and T. hirsutus are proposed for T. armatus Green, 1920 (not Tournier, 1873), and T. hirtellus LeConte, 1876 (not Tournier, 1873) respectively. …

A Determination By Thin-Layer Chromatography Of The Chemical Nature Of The Poison Produced By The Bryozoan Lophopodella Carteri (Hyatt), John Michael Dolan
Master's Theses
A study was undertaken to isolate and characterize by thin-layer chromatography the poisonous principle produced by the freshwater bryozoan, Lophopodella carteri (Hyatt).
The bryozoan homogenate was divided into a lipid and non-lipid portion and each was assayed for toxicity. Only the lipid extract was lethal to fishes. The lipid part was divided into six classes by thin-layer chromatography. When tested, four of the six classes were toxic. Thin layer chroatography was used to subdivide each class into fractions. Assays showed toxicity in nine of fourteen fractions.
Evidence indicates that the poisonous princi ple is a lipid and the large number …
