Stranding Records Of A Finback Whale, Balaenoptera Physalus, From Mississippi And The Goose-Beaked Whale, Ziphius Cavirostris, From Louisiana, Gordon Gunter, J.Y. Christmas
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Stranding records are sometimes the only source of data concerning some species of cetaceans and it is appropriate that these incidents be reported in some detail. This is particularly true of rare or little known species. Bottle-nosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) carcasses stranded on the Mississippi and Louisiana coasts are so common that they receive little attention. Other species occur and have, no doubt, been overlooked or confused by laymen with Tursiops. Even the rare stranding of large whales in this area may go unreported except for news stories that fail to identify the animal properly and which …
Recreation Research—So What?, Perry J. Brown, Allen Dyer, Ross S. Whaley
Recreation Research—So What?, Perry J. Brown, Allen Dyer, Ross S. Whaley
Forest Management Faculty Publications
The authors contend that most recreation research cannot stand the question, "So what?” From that point the article proceeds to a prescription for a meaningful approach to recreation research, which links recreation research to planning within a systems context. Researchable questions are posed dealing with preferences and behavior, resource capabilities and environmental impacts, and the nature and dynamics of institutions for the original state, process, and desired state segments of a planning system.
A Survey For Leucocytozoon Simondi Mathis And Leger (1910) In Canada Geese Of The Malheur Wildlife Refuge, John Val Snively
A Survey For Leucocytozoon Simondi Mathis And Leger (1910) In Canada Geese Of The Malheur Wildlife Refuge, John Val Snively
Dissertations and Theses
Blood smears of blood collected in 1971 and 1972 from 291 Canada geese at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge were examined to determine the incidence of the avian malarial parasite, Leucocytozoon simondi. No parasites were found. Absence of blood parasites suggests that birds using migration routes to the north and northeast of Malheur are free of the disease.
The Leucocytozoon infections known in California waterfowl may be attributable to sources within the flyway east or northeast of California, to infected birds crossing over from other flyways, or abnormal conditions in the molting grounds of sub-adult and non-nesting birds where major flyways …
Some Aspects Of The Water Economics Of Townsend's Chipmunks, Ali Mokhtar Rahima
Some Aspects Of The Water Economics Of Townsend's Chipmunks, Ali Mokhtar Rahima
Dissertations and Theses
Water consumption, and weight loss in response to water deprivation and saline water consumption, were studied in the Eutamias townsendii townsendii from Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. These chipmunks occupy moist Pacific Northwest forests. The results of these studies suggest that Townsend's chipmunks are dependent on sources of drinking water, at least for normal above ground activity, that their tolerance for water deprivation is comparatively low, and that they are unable to obtain a net gain of water by drinking 0.2 M sodium chloride solutions. Chipmunks cannot drink 0.4 M NaCl solution and survive for more than a few days. Metabolic …
Photosynthesis And Respiration Of Arceuthobium Tsugense, James Roger Miller
Photosynthesis And Respiration Of Arceuthobium Tsugense, James Roger Miller
Dissertations and Theses
Dark respiration rates of the aerial shoots of Arceuthobium tsugense, obtained by manometric and IRGA techniques, show production of C02to range between 155-300 µl CO2 g-1h-1 with evidence of seasonal variation. Experiments with 14C02 indicate that the aerial shoots are capable of some photosynthetic CO2 fixation, with 10-15% of the available 14C incorporated by the plant tissue in one hour. The portions of the o aerial shoots which are most active in C02 fixation are the young terminal regions. Biochemical characterization of the products of photosynthesis reveals that 80-90% of …

Ichthyofaunal Diversification And Distribution In The Ozark Stream In Northcentral Arkansas, William Dale Jackson, George L. Harp
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The distribution and diversity of the ichthyofauna of Arkansas are poorly known. This study is part of a continuing effort to elucidate the natural history of Arkansas. Big Creek is a relatively small, clear, cool-water stream in the Ozark Plateau of northcentral Arkansas. Big Creek and its tributaries drain into Lake Norfork, an impoundment on North Fork River. A total of 6,779 fish of 30 species was collected. Dominant pool species included Notropis boops, Fundulus catenatus, F. olivaceus, Labidesthes sicculus, and Campostoma anomalum; dominant riffle species included Etheostoma spectabile, E. caeruleum, Notropis boops, Fundulus catenatus, and Campostoma anomalum. The numerical …
Respiration Rates Of Two Midge Species At Different Temperatures, George L. Harp, Robert S. Campbell
Respiration Rates Of Two Midge Species At Different Temperatures, George L. Harp, Robert S. Campbell
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Respiration values for Chironomus n. sp. ranged from 0.11 mm³ O₂ /mg/hr at 5C to 0.44 mm³ O₂. /gm/hr at 25C. The range for Chaoborus punctipennis was from 0.15 mm³ O₂ /mg/hr at 5C to 0.56 mm³ O₂ /mg/hr at 25C. These low respiratory rates allow the two species to withstand low oxygen tensions for extended periods of time. Reflecting this ability, both species attained their greatest numerical and biomass values in the profundal regions of three strip-mine lakes whose lower waters become oxygen depleted during thermal stratification.

A Limnological Study Of Shadow Lake, A Subalpine Lake At Mount Rainer National Park, Washington, Timothy J. Hall
A Limnological Study Of Shadow Lake, A Subalpine Lake At Mount Rainer National Park, Washington, Timothy J. Hall
All Master's Theses
This paper presents a general limnological survey of a subalpine lake ecosystem. Physical, chemical and biological parameters were considered. Chemical and physical factors were dominated by the influence of snow-ice cover and high amounts of solar radiation. Abiotic factors result in a small phytoplankton standing crop and limitation of activity by photosynthetic organisms to the short summer season. Zooplankton and benthic communities are simplified in species composition and population size in response to the small primary producer population.

A Taxonomic Study Of The Balsamorhiza Hookeri Nutt. Balsamorhiza Hirsuta Nutt. Complex, Mary Clay Muller
All Master's Theses
In this study a multivariate statistical analysis utilizes the linear discriminant function that has been used to substantiate the shift of the variety lagocephala (Sharp) Cronq., from Balsamorhiza hirsuta, to B. hookeri (Cronquist, 1955). This method can be used to determine the placement of other questionable taxa.
In addition, this paper deals with the history, morphology and distribution of B. hirsuta, B. hookeri var. hookeri, and B. hookeri var. lagocephala.

The Effects Of Aging And Transformation On The Dna, Rna, Protein, And Hydroxyproline Content Of Fibroblasts (Wi 38) In Culture, James Michael Eichner
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The study of the aging process is the investigation as to how the passage of time affects cells, organs, and organisms. Aging is a very complex and incompletely understood phenomenon. This is reflected by the number of theories attributing aging to a variety of causative factors such as: (1) the somatic mutations occurring spontaneously or produced by ionizing radiation, which are thought to have some effect on again but are not responsible for the normal process; (2) the alteration of macromolecules as the cells of an organism age forming neoantigens and functioning in the autoimmune reactions; the Cross-linkage theory which …
Biology And Ecology Of False Wireworms In South Dakota (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), Carrol Otto Calkins
Biology And Ecology Of False Wireworms In South Dakota (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), Carrol Otto Calkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
False wireworms were important pests of wheat on the Great Plains during the early 20th century. Until recently, they were of little importance; however, they are now occasionally appearing in damaging proportions. The purpose of studying the biological and ecological aspects of these insects in South Dakota was to understand the factors responsible for their demise and the circumstances that could affect the recurrence of damaging populations. The more common species of false wireworms found in South Dakota during this study were Eleodes suturalis (Say), E. opaca (Say), E. hispilabris (Say), E. tricostata (Say), E. extricata (Say), E. obsoleta (Say), …
