Notes On Some Mammals From Jalisco, Mexico, Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr.
Notes On Some Mammals From Jalisco, Mexico, Hugh H. Genoways, J. Knox Jones Jr.
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The varied topography and climate of the Mexican state of Jalisco have resulted in a diverse mammalian fauna, no comprehensive account of which has been published. Significant collections of mammals from Jalisco were obtained for the Museum of Natural History, the University of Kansas, between 1949 and 1969 by field parties and individual field representatives, most notably J. R. Alcorn, R. W. Dickerman, and especially P. L. Clifton. Some of the specimens thus obtained have been recorded in systematic accounts of individual taxa or in reports on selected taxonomic groups (see for example, Choate, 1970; Genoways, 1972; Genoways and Jones, …

Discovery Of The Northern Hog Sucker In The Ottertail River, Mark A. Otnes
Discovery Of The Northern Hog Sucker In The Ottertail River, Mark A. Otnes
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
On June 3, 1973 several specimens of the Northern Hog Sucker (Hypentelium nigricans), were collected from a six-mile stretch of the Ottertail River, Aurdal Township, Ottertail County in Minnesota. Previous to this the Northern Hog Sucker has never been collected or reported from the Red River drainage, of which the Ottertail River is a part, nor from Upper Mississippi River Basin adjacent to the Red River drainage. As far back as 1907 researchers erroneously reported the Northern Hog Sucker from the Upper Mississippi River Basin.
Frost Crack In Norway Maple, Acer Platanoides, D. W. French, J. S. Fuhs
Frost Crack In Norway Maple, Acer Platanoides, D. W. French, J. S. Fuhs
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Frost cracks developed on from 0 - 29 per cent of the Norway maples in one nursery near St. Paul, Minnesota, in late November, 1970. The trees affected averaged 0 .9 - 1.3 inches in diameter and, of the eight varieties in the nursery, Jade Glen was the most susceptible and Emerald Queen the most resistant. More of the trees on a northeast facing slope were affected than those on a flat knoll. After 2 years the majority of the cracks were closed, except in the Crimson King variety, in which case 86 per cent were still open. Wood rotting …
Some Effects Of The Bite Of The Short-Tailed Shrew, Blarina Brevicauda, Howard F. Krosch
Some Effects Of The Bite Of The Short-Tailed Shrew, Blarina Brevicauda, Howard F. Krosch
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Folklore, especially in Europe, has long maintained that shrews are extremely poisonous. Zoologists have discounted this belief as superstition until recently, when it was learned that at least two species of shrews - the European water shrew, Neomys fodiens, and the American short-tailed shrew, Blarina brevicauda - produce a toxin in their sub-maxillary glands.
Regulating Growth Of An Aquatic Plant: Lemna Perpusilla, Willard L. Koukkari, Stanley H. Duke
Regulating Growth Of An Aquatic Plant: Lemna Perpusilla, Willard L. Koukkari, Stanley H. Duke
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Growth rates of Lemna perpusilla 6746 can be regulated in axenic cultures by 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) . Concentrations of 10-BM BA significantly enhanced growth, while levels of 10-7M and Higher were inhibitory. These effects of BA on growth were evident when calculated as either fresh weight of frond number.

Synanthropic Spiders Araneae Of The Twin Cities Area, Bruce Cutler
Synanthropic Spiders Araneae Of The Twin Cities Area, Bruce Cutler
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
A review of those spiders which are most likely to enter manmade structures or which occur on highly disturbed ground is presented. The nine species which are dependent on man's activities are discussed in more detail. Along with the species names there is a reference to illustrations in two available field guides to aid in identification.

Fishes Collected In Morro Bay, California Between January, 1968 And December, 1970, Harry L. Fierstine, Kurt F. Kline, Gregory R. Garman
Biological Sciences
Sixty-six species of fish were collected in Morro Bay between January, 1968 and December, 1970. The bay was divided into five ecological zones. Zone I was characterized by sandy beaches with little algae and contained 10 species. Zone II contained 35 species and was characterized by a sandy-silt bottom with some Zostera and kelp beds scattered among commercial piers. Zone III contained 31 species and was characterized by more Zostera beds and fewer commercial developments than Zone II. Zone IV contained 30 species and was characterized by large expanses of shallow Zostera beds dissected by very narrow channels. Zone V …

Ua35/11 Student Honors Bulletin, Vol. I, No. 1, Wku Honors Program
WKU Administration Documents
Articles written by honors program students. They were originally research projects, class papers or essays written for academic credit, but in each case the student has done further work editing and improving his or her manuscript for this publication. The articles represent a broad range of interests and disciplines, and they indicate a healthy attempt on the part of at least some students to dig for deeper knowledge and understanding than is usually associated with undergraduate study.

Crayfish, Leech, And Snail Control
Crayfish, Leech, And Snail Control
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
We have effective results in controlling crayfish in our ponds using Baytex. Baytex is a higly toxic compound that effects the nervous system of many organisms. Used in small concentrations it will kill crayfish without hurting fish. We use Baytex at 40 ppb. We normally dilute the required amount of chemical with water and then mix it thoroughly in the pond. Leeches can be controlled using Dylox. Masoten is another trade name for dylox. The recommended rate of application is 1/2 ppm. This should be applied in a manner so it is thoroughly mixed in the ground. Recommened treatment for …
Dry Matter And Minerals In Loblolly Pine Plantation On Four Arkansas Soils, Timothy T. Ku, James D. Burton
Dry Matter And Minerals In Loblolly Pine Plantation On Four Arkansas Soils, Timothy T. Ku, James D. Burton
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Average contents of N, P, K, Ca, and Na and total above ground dry matter were determined in 19-year-old unthinned loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations in southeastern Arkansas. Three stands were sampled on each of four sites: well and poorly drained coastal plain soils and well and poorly drained loessial soils. Total dry weights, determined from 15 felled trees on each of the 12 plots, ranged from 127,000 kg/ha on poorly drained loessial soil to 173,300 kg/ha on poorly drained coastal plain soil. Ranking of sites, in descending order of production of dry matter, P, K, and Na was: …
