Ecology Of The Arroyo Hondo Pueblo Site, Nathan Edmund Kelley

Biology ETDs

This ecological study is one part of a major archaeological investigation which began in the summer, 1970. The excavation of the pueblo ruins (Laboratory of Anthropology Site 12) southeast of Santa Fe, New Mexico, is under the supervision of Dr. Douglas Schwartz, Director of the School of American Research, and is supported primarily by a grant from the National Science Foundation (grant no. GS28001X2). The objective of the study was to determine those present environmental qualities which would support or affect in some manner a primitive agricultural society. The environmental factors examined were geology, physiography, soils, climate, hydrology, and vegetation. …

The Effects Of Drought On The Survival And Physiology Of Sporobolus Airoides (Torr.) Torr. Seedlings Of Varying Ages, John A. Mendenhall Apr 1973

The Effects Of Drought On The Survival And Physiology Of Sporobolus Airoides (Torr.) Torr. Seedlings Of Varying Ages, John A. Mendenhall

Biology ETDs

The effects of increasing water stress on seedlings of Sporobolus airoides (Torr.) Torr. were investigated in the laboratory under controlled growth conditions. Three groups of seedlings were germinated and grown in soil with soil moisture above field capacity for 15, 20 and 25 days. At this time watering ceased and at the end of drought periods of 5, 10, 15 and 20 days some of the seedlings were examined for total carbohydrate content, respiratory activity, and relative shoot water deficits. Other plants were rewatered after each drought period and 20 days later survival was determined visually. The dry weights of …

The Nature Of Miniature Melanocytes In Murine Epidermis, John Thomas Earnhardt Apr 1973

The Nature Of Miniature Melanocytes In Murine Epidermis, John Thomas Earnhardt

Master's Theses

In the epidermis of PET/Wmr mice the population of melanocytes reaches a peak and begins to decline during the first postnatal week, and has disappeared within four weeks. During this period a small number of weakly DOPA reactive miniature melanocytes are seen dispersed among the generally large, highly DOPA reactive melanocytes typical of the animal. These miniature melanocytes appear early, are among the last to disappear, and their population remains relatively constant against the drastically changing population of typical melanocytes. In attempts to determine the nature of the miniature melanocytes, heterologous grafting was employed whereby the melanocytes were subjected to …

Characterization Of Streptozotocin Induced Small Colony Phenotypes In Bacteria, David M. Zimmer Apr 1973

Characterization Of Streptozotocin Induced Small Colony Phenotypes In Bacteria, David M. Zimmer

Masters Theses

Streptozocin-induced small colony variants of E. coli were characterized and found to have a genetic basis. Both E. coli and S. typhimurium were susceptible to the mutation causing small colonies. Small colony cell lines exhibited a greatly increased generation time and were shown to be non-motile, electron microscopy revealing a complete loss of flagella. The small colony phenotype was revertible by streptozotocin and nitrosoguanidine. The locus responsible for small colony phenotype in one strain of E. coli was found to map within a 19 minute segment of the chromosome between HfrH and HfrC.

The Effects Of Penicillin Upon The Fission Rate Of Dugesia Dorotocephala., John J. Fahsbender Apr 1973

The Effects Of Penicillin Upon The Fission Rate Of Dugesia Dorotocephala., John J. Fahsbender

Theses and Dissertations

Planaria (class Turbellaria) are the highest life forms which exhibit fission (Hyman, 1951). The laboratory planarian, Dugesia, lives in lakes, ponds, streams and springs, where it occupies bottom habitats. Fissioning is an asexual mode of reproduction. The fission plane is usually transverse, forming behind the pharynx, and separation appears to be dependent upon locomotion (Curtis, 1902). The posterior half of the worm adheres to the substratum while the anterior half continues to move forward until the worm snaps in two. Each half then regenerates the missing parts, forming two new smaller worms.

The Effects Of Thiamin Deficiency And Thiamin Antagonists On Cardiac Function In The Rat, D. James B. Sutherland Apr 1973

The Effects Of Thiamin Deficiency And Thiamin Antagonists On Cardiac Function In The Rat, D. James B. Sutherland

Theses and Dissertations

A study was made to determine what biochemical changes were involved in the slowing of the rat heart rate during thiamin deprivation, pyrithiamin or oxythiamin treatment. The appearance of bradycardia during progressive thiamin deficiency was shown to be related to the reduction in myocardial enzymatic activity of pyruvate (PDH) and 2-ketoglutarate (2-KGDH) dehydrogenase, and not due to inanition alone since pair-fed control rats did not show bradycardia until the agonal stage. Bradycardia was not the result of reduced energy since CP, ATP, ADP, and AMP levels remained normal even though PDH and 2-KGDH activity dropped to 20% of normal by …

This algal flora consisted of 27 genera and 36 species of Chlorophyta, 2 genera and 2 species of Euglenophyta, 32 genera and 106 species of Bacillariophyceae (including 16 genera and 33 species of soil diatoms), 1 genus and 2 species of Chrysophyta excluding diatoms and 6 genera and 14 species of Cyanophyta. Diatoms were the predominent algae in this study. Chlorococcum humicola, Vaucheria geminata, Amphora normani, Hantzschia amphioxys and Oscillatoria sancta were prominent in the greenhouses. In the arboretum …

Reproduction And Development Of Ferrissia Rivularis (Say) (Basommatophora: Ancylidae) And The Effects Of Maleic Hydrazide On Its Development And Fecundity, Yuan-Hsu Kang Apr 1973

Reproduction And Development Of Ferrissia Rivularis (Say) (Basommatophora: Ancylidae) And The Effects Of Maleic Hydrazide On Its Development And Fecundity, Yuan-Hsu Kang

Theses and Dissertations

Ferrissia rivularis was selected for research because of its local accessibility and because essentially nothing was known of its reproduction and development. Reproductive and developmental biology is first described herein from the natural environment. This is then compared with the effects created by experimental exposure to a selected herbicide, maleic hydrazide, which might be a potential threat to certain invertebrates in the natural environment.

Transforming Ability Of Bacillus Subtilis Dna Taken Up By Barley Embryos, Christine Tolman Ence Apr 1973

Transforming Ability Of Bacillus Subtilis Dna Taken Up By Barley Embryos, Christine Tolman Ence

Theses and Dissertations

Purified Bacillus subtilis DNA taken up by one-day-old barley embryos and permanently fixed within the barley cell is shown to have maintained its biological activity in B. subtilis transformation. Cesuim chloride density gradient centrifugation of DNA isolated from the roots of barley embryos after the uptake and incorporation of radioactive, bromouracil-labelled B. subtilis DNA indicates the presence of the bacterial DNA in several discreet bands of well-defined density, whose density is changed by sonication. These preliminary findings concerning the fate of bacterial DNA taken up by barley roots are discussed in terms of the recombination model of Ledoux and Huart …

A Circular Dichroic Study Of Cu (Ii) -Ribonuclease Complexes, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Kensal E. Van Holde Mar 1973

A Circular Dichroic Study Of Cu (Ii) -Ribonuclease Complexes, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Kensal E. Van Holde

Papers in Microbiology

The visible and ultraviolet circular dichroic (CD) spectra resulting from the interaction of ribonuclease with successive Cu(I1) ions have been recorded under a variety of conditions. At pH 7 in the presence of 0.16 M KC1 a broad, negative band was found in the visible region. This band increased in intensity and changed in shape as successive coppers were added. The circular dichroic spectra could be analyzed in terms of two kinds of binding sites: a single strong site with CD minimum at about 710 nm, and four weaker sites with CD minimum at about 600 nm. The binding constants …

The Effect Of Psyllium Hydrocolloid And Cholestyramine On Hepatic Bile Lipid Composition In Man, W. T. Beher, B. M. Schuman, M. A. Block, G. J. Lin, K. K. Casazza Mar 1973

The Effect Of Psyllium Hydrocolloid And Cholestyramine On Hepatic Bile Lipid Composition In Man, W. T. Beher, B. M. Schuman, M. A. Block, G. J. Lin, K. K. Casazza

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The effects of a mucoid - psyllium hydrocolloid - and an anion exchange polymercholestryamine - on the total cholesterol, total phospholipid, total bile salt, cholate, chenodeoxycholate, and deoxycholate concentrations of hepatic bile were determined in six post-cholecystectomy patients. Bile was obtained by drainage through an indwelling T-tube, which was clamped except during bile collection. Psyllium hydrocolloid treatment (12 gm/day) for 6 to 29 days had little or no effect on the cholesterol or phospholipid concentration of hepatic bile, but increased the total bile salt pool by gradually increasing the concentration of deoxycholate. Cholestyramine treatment (12 gm/day) for 8 to 12 …

Effect Of Gibberellic Acid And Actinomycin D On The Formation And Distribution Of Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum In Barley Aleurone Cells, Eugene L. Vigil, Manfred Ruddat Mar 1973

Effect Of Gibberellic Acid And Actinomycin D On The Formation And Distribution Of Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum In Barley Aleurone Cells, Eugene L. Vigil, Manfred Ruddat

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Analysis of structural changes in barley aleurone cells during germination or following incubation of isolated layers in gibberellic acid with or without actinomycin D revealed extensive development of rough endoplasmic reticulum. Following the assembly of stacked rough endoplasmic reticulum, vesiculation occurred mainly in basal regions of the cell, resulting in a polar distribution of rough endoplasmic reticulum vesicles. It is postulated that these vesicles are involved in protein secretion, because smooth vesicles, derived from the rough endoplasmic reticulum, apparently become appressed to the plasma membrane. The increased α-amylase in the ambient medium and in cell homogenates correlated directly with formation …

Control Of Loopers On Snap Beans, Elvis A. Heinrichs, E. E. Burgess, Charles L. Mullins, W. J. Vanlandingham

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Snap beans, Phaseolus vulgaris L., are important to the economy of Tennessee. According to the publication, Tennessee Agricultural Statistics, 13,000 acres were grown in Tennessee in 1971 with a value of $2,984,000. Tennessee produces 5.9% of the beans grown in the United States and ranks fifth in the nation in snap bean production. Tennessee-grown beans are processed in Tennessee and in nearby states. In 1972 demand was up because of poor growing weather in the adjacent bean producing states. Most beans in Tennessee are grown on the Cumberland Plateau, Sequatchie Valley, and in extreme northeast Tennessee. In recent years, looper …
