State-Dependent Learning With Caffeine, Barbara A. Cooper
State-Dependent Learning With Caffeine, Barbara A. Cooper
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction
- The study investigates state-dependent (SD) learning, where performance is influenced by the drug state during learning.
- Caffeine, a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant, is the focus, with high doses administered to subjects.
- The research aims to determine if caffeine can serve as a discriminative stimulus in a T-maze shock escape task.
Method
- Subjects: 20 naive male albino rats, selected based on activity levels.
- Experimental design involved two groups: one receiving caffeine and the other saline.
- The T-maze apparatus was used for training and testing, with specific dimensions and shock delivery mechanisms.
Procedure
- A 30-minute free exploration period was conducted …
Review Of Curassows And Related Birds, Paul A. Johnsgard
Review Of Curassows And Related Birds, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
To contemplate the appearance of a new book dealing for the first time with an exhaustive coverage of an entire avian family is to evoke an excitement that is all too rare an occurrence for most ornithologists. This excitement is enhanced when the bird group is one of the least studied and yet, evolutionarily speaking, most significant of the galliform families, and when the authors are as well known and highly respected as Delacour and Amadon. Anticipation reaches its apogee when the contributing artists are as competent as Albert E. Gilbert, George M. Sutton, and David Reid-Henry. After reading the …

A Comparative Study Of Fish Populations In The Vicinity Of A Thermal Discharge In The James River, Virginia, Judson Wayne White
A Comparative Study Of Fish Populations In The Vicinity Of A Thermal Discharge In The James River, Virginia, Judson Wayne White
Master's Theses
The size, species composition and structure of fish populations in a six mi stretch of the James River in the Piedmont Province of Virginia were analyzed. Twenty collections were made by electrofishing from October 1972 through September 1973 from both the north side of the river, which received a thermal discharge from a power station, and the south side where temperatures were ambient. Parameters investigated were number of species, total number of individuals and the Shannon-Wiener and evenness indices of species diversity. Significant differences in seasonal patterns were found between the communities in the thermal discharge and those on the …

Development Of A Selective Bait For Rabbits, A J. Oliver, S. H. Wheeler
Development Of A Selective Bait For Rabbits, A J. Oliver, S. H. Wheeler
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
It has long been recognised that a means of killing rabbits selectively in the presence of stock would be a major advance in rabbit control. It would enable a whole farm to be treated for rabbit control at one time, saving operational costs and cutting down reinfestation of rabbits into treated areas from untreated areas.
A literature search and some pilot trials indicated that indandione derivatives were more toxic to rabbits than to ruminants.
Pindone (2- pivalyl-l,3-indandione) was selected for evaluation.
Primary Productivity Of Coastal Marshes In Mississippi, Armando A. De La Cruz
Primary Productivity Of Coastal Marshes In Mississippi, Armando A. De La Cruz
Gulf and Caribbean Research
The annual net primary production of nine types of marsh communities common in Mississippi Gulf Coast estuaries were studied by means of the Harvest Method. Production values ranged from 600 g m-2 yr-1 for a Sagittaria lancifolia marsh to 2330 g m-2 yr-1 for a Phragmites communis marsh. Primary productivity values for the other marsh types are Juncus roemerianus - 1697 g m-2 yr-1, Scirpus robustus - 1056 g m-2 yr-1, Spartina cynosuroides - 2190 g m-2 yr-1, Spartina patens - 1922 g …
A Review Of Salinity Problems Of Organisms In United States Coastal Areas Subject To The Effects Of Engineering Works, Gordon Gunter, Buena S. Ballard, A. Venkataramiah
A Review Of Salinity Problems Of Organisms In United States Coastal Areas Subject To The Effects Of Engineering Works, Gordon Gunter, Buena S. Ballard, A. Venkataramiah
Gulf and Caribbean Research
The nongaseous substances that normally move in and out of cells are metabolites, water and salts. The common salts in water determine its salinity, and the definition of sea water salinity and its composition are discussed. The relationships of salinity to all phyla of animals living in the coastal waters are reviewed, with emphasis on the estuaries of the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of the United States, which are particularly influenced by coastal engineering works and changes of salinity caused thereby.
The fauna of estuaries is made up of a few brackish water species which complete their life cycles there, …
Grazing And Control Of Coral Reef Community Structure By Diadema Antillarum Philippi (Echinodermata: Echinoidea): A Preliminary Study, P. Sammarco, J. S. Levinton, John C. Ogden
Grazing And Control Of Coral Reef Community Structure By Diadema Antillarum Philippi (Echinodermata: Echinoidea): A Preliminary Study, P. Sammarco, J. S. Levinton, John C. Ogden
Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
The grazing activities of the tropical echinoid Diadema antillarum Philippi can markedly influence the structure of the shallow-water epibenthic coral reef community. The elimination of an entire Diadema population from a patch reef in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands resulted in a great increase in macro-algal biomass, alterations in species composition, shifts in dominance, an increase in species numbers, and a decrease in equitability. The increase noted in number of species may be indicative of either initial pre-competitive phases of succession or the creation of a new habitat- the micro-canopy. Experiments involving the caging of Diadema have shown that the …
