Spatial And Temporal Activities Of The Yellow Mud Turtle, Kinosternon Flavescens, In Eastern New Mexico, Robert Charles Semmler Ii
Spatial And Temporal Activities Of The Yellow Mud Turtle, Kinosternon Flavescens, In Eastern New Mexico, Robert Charles Semmler Ii
Biology ETDs
Many small ponds in the eastern plains of New Mexico are inhabited by yellow mud turtles. Some of these ponds are permanent, but many dry out during the year. This makes the terrestrial activity of mud turtles an important aspect of their life history. When turtles were active within the ponds, they showed no preference for permanent over temporary water. There were always more females than males present in the ponds. As water levels receded, aquatic activity lessened and the turtles buried themselves just under the mud near the edge of the pond for a few days and then moved …

Herpetofauna (Anurans And Lizards) Of Eddy County, New Mexico: Quaternary Changes And Environmental Implications, John S. Applegarth
Biology ETDs
For interpreting environmental implications of Quaternary faunal changes, anurans and lizards are more informative than other vertebrates. Remains are analyzed from five sites in the limestone hills west of Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico. The modern anuran and lizard fauna of Eddy County is reviewed in terms of habit requirements and known distributions and is used as a standard for interpreting prehistoric remains. Procedures are described for preparing comparative skeletons and for analyzing; prehistoric remains.
The Structure Of Glycogen Phosphorylase A At 2.5 Å Resolution, Stephen Sprang, Robert J. Fletterick
The Structure Of Glycogen Phosphorylase A At 2.5 Å Resolution, Stephen Sprang, Robert J. Fletterick
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The structure of the glucose-inhibited form of glycogen phosphorylase a has been determined at a resolution of 2.5 Å. With the aid of the primary sequence derived by Titani et al. (1977) for this enzyme, we have constructed an atomic model of the 97,400 molecular weight monomer. A substantial improvement in the electron density map over that reported previously (Fletterick et al., 1976b) was achieved by extension of the data set to 2.5 Å and the inclusion of three additional "heavy-atom" derivatives in the phasing procedure. Main-chain and side-chain electron density are clearly resolved in the map, allowing an unambiguous …

The Reproductive Biology Of The Diamondback Terrapin, Malaclemys Terrapin Tequesta, Richard A. Seigel
The Reproductive Biology Of The Diamondback Terrapin, Malaclemys Terrapin Tequesta, Richard A. Seigel
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The reproductive biology of the Florida east coast terrapin, Malalemys terrapin tequesta was studied during 1977-1978 at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Brevard County, Florida. Mating occurred in small canals and ditches during late march and April. Terrapins exhibited a poorly developed courtship behavior system: this was attributed to the relative isolation of the species due to its brackish water habitat. Nesting occurred on dike roads, rather than on sand dunes as reported for other races of Malaclemys. Air temperature was the most important factor controlling nesting activity. One to three clutches were laid each year. Malaclemys appeared to …

Studies On The Anatomy Of The Parasitic Gymnosperm Parasitaxus Ustus (Podocarpaceaea), Evelyn Wilkinson
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
An anatomical study of the parasitic gymnosperm Parasitaxus ustus was conducted. Material was collected in New Caledonia, embedded in paraffin or celloidin, sectioned and stained. The apical meristem consists of apical initial cells, central mother cells, the peripheral zone, and rib meristem. Leaves are scale-like, triangular and broadly decurrent at their bases. Resin ducts and prominent sclereids are present in leaves and the cortex of the stem. The parasite-host connection is in the form of a xylem to xylem connection in which the tracheids are connected by bordered pits.
Swimming As A Determinate To Immigration For Two Small Mammals In Coastal Virginia, Jeffrey Lewis Carter
Swimming As A Determinate To Immigration For Two Small Mammals In Coastal Virginia, Jeffrey Lewis Carter
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Small mammals were live trapped on the mainland and on an island located in the southeast corner of Virginia. The area was characterized by a mid-Atlantic coastal climate. White-footed mice (Perompsous fsucopus) were trapped on the mainland but not on the island, whereas meadow voles (Microtus psnnsylvimious) inhabited only the island. A series of swimming tests were performed in both the field and in the laboratory on both of these species to determine if swimming abilities could be the factor preventing Pszomysous from colonizing the island.
Both species of small mammals showed good swimming endurance in …
Detection Of Unique Tumor-Associated Proteins In The Urine Of Patients With Transitional Cell Carcinoma By High Resolution Two-Dimensional Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis, Robert David Lehman
Detection Of Unique Tumor-Associated Proteins In The Urine Of Patients With Transitional Cell Carcinoma By High Resolution Two-Dimensional Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis, Robert David Lehman
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
A two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic technique was developed for the detection of unique tumor-associated proteins in urine of patients with transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urinary bladder. This technique yielded high resolution of polypeptides in the urine of cancer patients. Urine was chosen as a source of tumor-associated components because the location of the tum or should release already solublized tum or substances in to the urine.
Urinary proteins were concentrated and then analyzed by the two - dimensional electrophoretic technique using isoelectric focusing in the first dimension and sodium dodecylsulfate - polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the second dimension. …
Feeding Morphologies And Distribution Patterns Of Marine Cladocera In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Sandra Layne Gilchrist
Feeding Morphologies And Distribution Patterns Of Marine Cladocera In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Sandra Layne Gilchrist
OES Theses and Dissertations
Temporal and spatial distributions of marine cladocera in the lower Chesapeake Bay estuary were observed over a year-long sampling period. The distributions of cladoceran species throughout the Bay were studied in relation to temperature and salinity. A survey of the species over the entire Bay is included to establish distribution patterns of the various species during a short time period.
Theoretical mathematical principles were used to predict feeding abilities of the Bay species. Mouthparts are described qualitatively and quantitatively to infer function. A mandibular index developed by Itoh (1970) was revised and employed in evaluating feeding methods interspecifically and interspecifically. …

Seasonal Feeding Habits Of The River Otter (Lutra Canadensis) In Ditches Of The Great Dismal Swamp, Ronnie M. Pierce
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
To determine the seasonal feeding habits of the river otter (Lutra canadensis) in the Great Dismal Swamp 209 scats were collected, from May 1977 to May 1978, and analyzed for content. Remains of crayfish were found with a frequency of occurrence of 82% while fish remains occurred in 62% of the scat. This is in direct contrast to previous studies (from other areas) which found fish with a greater frequency than crayfish. Fish consumption was believed to increase during periods of low water or low temperatures. Sunfish were represented most frequently and may be the preferred fish. Amphiuma remains …

Aspects Of The Life History And Reproductive Biology Of The Socorro Isopod, Thermosphaeroma Thermophilum (Crustacea: Peracarida), Stephen M. Shuster
Biology ETDs
Life history and behavioral information on North American isopods are limited and non-existent for the genus Thermosphaeroma. The habitat of T. thermophilum allows easy and accurate collection of field and laboratory data. The relative absence of complicating evolutionary contexts facilitates investigation of sexually selected behavior and morphology. Males are larger than females. Reproduction and mortality are somewhat seasonal. Sex ratio is consistently male-biased, which is attributed to male searching for mates and avoidance of males by non-reproductive females. T. thermophilum is omnivorous. Reproductive timing by females and its contribution to sexual dimorphism are discussed. Males choose mates by size and …
Sulfate Transport In The Sulfate Reducing Bacterium; Desulfovibrio Gigas, Joseph John Ruocco
Sulfate Transport In The Sulfate Reducing Bacterium; Desulfovibrio Gigas, Joseph John Ruocco
Biology ETDs
The characteristics and kinetics of sulfate uptake and reduction by Desulfovibrio gigas were studied using radio-labelled sulfate, in order to assess the nature of terminal electron acceptor transport with respect to current membrane transport theory. Although sulfate is not accumulated into an intracellular pool, it is transported across the cell membrane prior to reduction as evidenced by studies on the localization of sulfate binding and reduction by cellular fractions. Sulfate is rapidly bound by whole cells to a stead, -state level which is a function of extracellular sulfate concentration and the availability of an electron donor. Hydrogen sulfide evolution begins …
Cytotoxic Effects Of Vanadium On Pulmonary Alveolar Macrophages, Crystal Joy Sheridan
Cytotoxic Effects Of Vanadium On Pulmonary Alveolar Macrophages, Crystal Joy Sheridan
Biology ETDs
Particles containing vanadium are emitted into the air from fuel oil and coal combustion, and may be inhaled by man. Because such particles are within the respirable size, vanadium may be deposited in the alveolar region of the lung and come into contact with the pulmonary alveolar macrophage. In order to evaluate vanadium cytotoxicity, pulmonary alveolar macrophages were lavaged from dogs, rabbits and rats and then incubated with various concentrations of vanadium pentoxide. The minimum vanadium pentoxide concentration which reduced cell viability from control was 1 mg/m1 for dog macrophages, 2.5 mg/ml for rabbit macrophages and 10 mg/ml for rat …

Isolation Of An Acid-Fast Organism From The Aqueous Humor In A Case Of Sarcoidosis, C. L. Barth, M. S. Judge, L. H. Mattman, P. C. Hessburg
Isolation Of An Acid-Fast Organism From The Aqueous Humor In A Case Of Sarcoidosis, C. L. Barth, M. S. Judge, L. H. Mattman, P. C. Hessburg
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The anterior chamber fluid from the eye of this patient with sarcoidosis was found to contain microcolonies of a cellwall-deficient organism that was propagated and identified as acid-fast by the Intensified Acid-Fast stain. The colonies were inoculated into mice and retrieved from the dead or sacrificed animals. This report suggests that the acid-fast microbe in the aqueous humor of this case of uveitis-sarcoidosis may be the same organism as that found in the blood in sarcoidosis. Thus, it may be associated not only with the primary disease, but also with the complications of Boeck's sarcoidosis.

Bulletin 3967 - Cyanogenetic Plants Of Western Australia, T E H Aplin
Bulletins - 3000 - 3999
This article deals with those native, naturalized and cultivated plants, which by virtue of contained cyanogenetic glycosides, are known to be poisonous or potentially poisonous to livestock in Western Australia.
Cyanogenetic glycosides are chemical compounds which contain a cyanogen (cyanide) radical combined with a sugar molecule. The sugar moiety may differ in glycosides obtained from different plants, and as a consequence glycosides from different plants, containing different sugar moieties, may be given different names.
When a cyanogenetic glycoside is broken down by enzyme action, through injury to the plant or by microbial action in the digestive system of the animal, …
The Effect Of Escherichia Coli Endotoxin On The Cat Periapical Tissues, Thomas G. Dwyer
The Effect Of Escherichia Coli Endotoxin On The Cat Periapical Tissues, Thomas G. Dwyer
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The periapical tissue reaction to three concentrations of endotoxin solutions and to a sterile saline control solution was examined in six adult cats. The maxillary and mandibular cuspids were isolated and the pulps extirpated with barbed broaches. The four solutions (1, 10, 100 μg/ml endotoxin, and saline) were then injected into the four prepared teeth for each cat and the access cavities sealed with IRM.
At two week intervals, two cats were sacrificed and the specimens removed, while the remaining animals were retreated as previously described. The block tissue sections were radiographed, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and prepared for …

Concomitant Infections With The Parasites Trypanosoma Musculi Kendall, 1906 And Trichinella Spiralis (Owen, 1835) Raillet, 1896 In The Laboratory Mouse, Musmusculus, Joan Chew Liang Tan
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Four groups of female Swiss Webster mice were injected intraperitoneally with similar volumes of normal saline, sonicated Trypanosoma musculi and saline, sonicated trypanosomes and Freund's Complete Adjuvant (FCA) and FCA. When the mice became immune and thus responded negatively to a T. musculi challenge, sera were collected and administered to four other groups of mice to establish passive immunity in these animals.
An established dose of innoculum of Trichinella spiralis larvae (8.1 larvae/gram of body weight) was given to all the mice by gastric gavage. These mice were killed 26 days later and the musculature digested with artificial gastric juice …

The Effects Of Temperature And Ph On The Differentiation Of Trypanosoma Lewisi (Kent, 1880) Laveran & Mesnil, 1901, In A Defined Medium, Carolann R. Rosario
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Trypanosoma lewisi is an arthropod-transmitted protozoan parasite found in the bloodstream of rats. In its life cycle it undergoes cellular differentiation. It is primarily found as the trypomastigote form in the rat and as the epimastigote form in the arthropod, the rat flea. Various studies have been done on hemoflagellates to determine the factors responsible for stimulating the differentiation from one form to the other. Included in these factors are pH, temperature, and protein fractions from fetal calf serum. Recent efforts have also been aimed at developing simple or defined media for physiological or biochemical studies on hemoflagellates. The purpose …

A Vegetational Analysis Of A Tropical Cloud Forest In Southern Tamaulipas, Mexico, Robert I. Lonard, R. G. Ross
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
The vegetation of a tropical cloud forest in northern Mexico was analyzed by the point- quarter and line intercept methods to determine the relative density, relative dominance, relative frequency and importance values of the woody and herbaceous species. The flora of the study site, near Gomez Farias, Tamaulipas, Mexico, represents a unique mixture of temperate and tropical taxa. Based on importance values, the upper woody stratum was dominated by oak (Quercus sartorii Liebm.), sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.), Turpinia occidentalis (Swartz) Don and Clethra macrophylla Mart, and Gal. The lower woody stratum consisted largely of Solarium nudum H.B.K. and Ampelopsis …
Distribution Of Plants With Extrafloral Nectaries And Ants At Two Elevations In Jamaica, Kathleen H. Keeler
Distribution Of Plants With Extrafloral Nectaries And Ants At Two Elevations In Jamaica, Kathleen H. Keeler
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Frequencies of plants with extrafloral nectaries were determined for two elevations in Jamaica. Extrafloral nectaries were found on 0.28 of the plants at sea level (Happy Grove, Portland) and 0.00 of the plants at 1310 m (Whitfield Hall, St. Thomas). Ant abundance, as indicated by discovery of and recruitment to baits, was greater at the lower elevation site. However, despite the apparent absence of plants with extrafloral nectaries, there were abundant ants at 1310 m.
