Communication And Social Behavior Of Captive Slow Lorises (Nycticebus Coucang), Roberta N. Chinn
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Communication and. social behavior of a prosimian primate, Nycticebus coucang, were studied to gain a better understanding of communication and social behaviors of the Order Primates. Four adult females, two adult males, and one juvenile male were the subjects for the study. The focal animal technique was used to observe communicative and social behavior. Vocal behaviors were sonagraphically analyzed. Probability of occurrence was calculated for all behavior categories observed. Conditional probabilities were calculated for the eight most frequently occurring behaviors in a lag sequential analysis. Results of the probability of occurrence analysis showed that agonistic behaviors occurred rarely or …

Vertical And Horizontal Distributions Of Major Meiofauna Taxa On Selected Beaches In The South Slough Estuary, Charleston, Oregon, Usa, Stuart A. Arkett
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in abundance of Nematoda, Gastrotricha, and Harpacticoida between depths in the sediment at various tide levels and between depths at various sites with increasing time of exposure. It also examines the relationship between the abundances of meiofaunal groups and the mean grain size of the sediment. This study was also a part of the continual baseline-data gathering program for the South Slough Estuarine Sanctuary, Delane A. Munson, Manager.
Dirofilaria Immitis In The Wild Canids Of Illinois, Thomas J. Kick
Dirofilaria Immitis In The Wild Canids Of Illinois, Thomas J. Kick
Masters Theses
The heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis, is widespread in dogs in North America and has been reported in wild canids in many states. This is a report of this parasite in hearts removed from coyote, red fox and gray fox carcasses collected in Illinois. A total of 415 coyotes had a significantly higher infection rate (23.6%) than 225 red foxes (3.6%) and 99 gray foxes (3.0%). Infection rates in red foxes and coyotes were significantly higher in or near the Wabash Border Natural Division along the eastern side of the state, suggesting a relationship between infection rates and this region. The …

A Study Of The Free-Floating Phytoplankton Of The Embarras River And Polecat Creek, Coles County, Il, Richard Gary Fried
Masters Theses
An investigation of 2 sites on the Embarras River and 1 site on Polecat Creek was undertaken for a one-year period. Special emphasis was given to phytoplankton species and to their seasonal variations. Approximately 170 species from 8 divisions of algae were encountered during the one-year period.
Temperature was found to have no direct correlation with algal periodicity.
Palmer's organic pollution genus index was applied to determine the approximate levels of organic pollution at all three sampling sites. Only one time during the year (10/1/79), did all three sites suggest high organic pollution.
Transeau's 6 ecological groups were used to …

Evaluation Of Potential Wild Turkey Habitat In Eastern Illinois, Cara B. Daugherty
Evaluation Of Potential Wild Turkey Habitat In Eastern Illinois, Cara B. Daugherty
Masters Theses
Reestablishment of the wild turkey has been successful in the southern part of Illinois where large established tracts of woodland occur. However, turkeys are capable of surviving in areas with less forest cover, if food, nesting materials and protection are available. This project evaluated the potential turkey habitat of a 14-county area of eastern Illinois along the drainage of the Wabash River. Six potential release sites were selected and the habitat evaluated. In these areas, oak (Quercus spp.) and hickory (Carya spp.) were the dominant tree species. Disturbance from human populations was determined in each of …

Effects Of Fixed Interval And Continuous Biofeedback Reinforcement On Emg Frontalis Muscle Activity, Kathleen I. Twinem
Effects Of Fixed Interval And Continuous Biofeedback Reinforcement On Emg Frontalis Muscle Activity, Kathleen I. Twinem
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The effects of continuous vs. intermittent reinforcement using electromyographic (EMG) feedback as the reinforcer were compared in reducing frontalis muscle activity. Fourteen subjects were chosen from a group of 30 students who had expressed an interest in learning how to relax. Those students having the highest pre-experimental baseline scores were chosen. They were matched according to both those scores and sex and then randomly assigned to either a continuous biofeedback reinforcement group or a 30 sec. fixed interval biofeedback reinforcement group. The experiment consisted of nine sessions (three acquisition, two treatment, and four extinction) with integrated EMG activity from the …

The Chronic Effects Of Estradiol Benzoate On Ventricular Myocardial Blood Flow In The Adult Female Rat, Stephen Maurice Ashe
The Chronic Effects Of Estradiol Benzoate On Ventricular Myocardial Blood Flow In The Adult Female Rat, Stephen Maurice Ashe
Theses and Dissertations
Clinical and experimental data suggest that humans and some animals are protected from acute myocardial infarction by estrogen. There has been much speculation of the exact role which estrogen plays in the circulation. The mechanism of this hormonally related protection is unclear.
In the present study the chronic effects of estradiol benzoate on coronary blood flow in adult female rats were studied. Female control rats, castrates and castrates receiving estrogen for a period of 16 weeks were used. In vivo tracer microsphere studies of myocardial blood flow allowed the quantification of the effects of estrogen on coronary circulation. Results of …
An Interphysiographic Analysis Of Herb And Shrub Vegetation In Virginia Forests, Stephen James Binns
An Interphysiographic Analysis Of Herb And Shrub Vegetation In Virginia Forests, Stephen James Binns
Theses and Dissertations
Thirty upland deciduous stands were sampled from the mid-coastal Plain to the mid-Piedmont in New Kent, Hanover, and Louisa Counties. Density data for herb and shrub species were collected and soil samples were collected in each stand. A cluster analysis of the vegetation data was performed using Euclidean Distance and "furthest-neighbor" clustering. Four clusters of stands were identified. A cluster of six stands with Euonymus americanus as the dominant species was strongly related to the Coastal Plain, but the other clusters were not physiographically associated. Other important species in the analysis were Vaccinium vacillans, Gaylussacia baccata, and Mitchella repens.

Morphological Variation Among 14 Species Of Callogobius Bleeker (Pisces: Gobiidae), James Francis Mckinney
Morphological Variation Among 14 Species Of Callogobius Bleeker (Pisces: Gobiidae), James Francis Mckinney
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
A survey of the variation among the species of the Callogobius complex has been accomplished in order to determine if recognition of more than one genus is warranted for this assemblage of species. Emphasis has been placed on the osteological variation. Relationships among certain species within the Callogobius complex have been exposed. Although there are two well defined species groups within the complex, it is felt that inclusion of all of the examined species within the single genus Callogobius is the most parsimonious course of action.
Multiple Methods Of Analysis Of 2'-O-Methylation In 5.8s Rrna, Sharon H. Ryan
Multiple Methods Of Analysis Of 2'-O-Methylation In 5.8s Rrna, Sharon H. Ryan
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
5.8S rRNA is a low molecular weight ribosomal RNA which is found hydrogen bonded to 28S rRNA in the eucaryotic cell. There are two nucleotides which have 2'-0-methylations; a guanine residue at position 77 is fully methylated and a uridine residue at position 14 which is partially methylated. This partial 2'-0-methylation of the uridine residue has been found to vary with the tissue source, with the highest level in normal tissue and the lowest level in neoplastic tissue. In order to study the significance of this site-specific methylation, a reliable and convenient method of analysis was needed.
