Parasites And Diseases Of Mullets (Mugilidae), I. Paperna, Robin M. Overstreet Jan 1981

Parasites And Diseases Of Mullets (Mugilidae), I. Paperna, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The following treatment of parasites, diseases and conditions affecting mullet hopefully serves several functions. It acquaints someone involved in rearing mullets with problems he can face and topics he should investigate. We cannot go into extensive illustrative detail on every species or group, but do provide a listing of most parasites reported or known from mullet and some pertinent general information on them. Because of these enumerations, the paper should also act as a review for anyone interested in mullet parasites or the use of such parasites as indicators about a mullet's diet and migratory behavior. Unfortunately, limited space prohibits …

Attributes Of Dispersing Meadow Voles In Open-Grid Populations, Raymond D. Dueser, Marcia L. Wilson, Robert K. Rose Jan 1981

Attributes Of Dispersing Meadow Voles In Open-Grid Populations, Raymond D. Dueser, Marcia L. Wilson, Robert K. Rose

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Dispersal was investigated in two open-grid populations of meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus (Ord, 1815) an central Virginia (U.S.A.) from November 1974 to April 1978. "Dispersal" was defined as immigration onto open, occupied population grids. Dispersers were distinguished from residents by weight at first capture. Individuals first captured at weights <30 g were classified as residents; those first captured at >30 g were classified as dispersers. Three independent lines of evidence support the validity of the 30-g criterion for recognizing dispersers in these vole populations. With frequent trapping and high trappability, particularly of young animals, this open-grid method of study offers two advantages in the study of dispersal. First, dispersers identified …

Blood Flow To The Corpus Luteum-Bearing Ovary And Ipsilateral Uterine Horn Of Cows During The Oestrous Cycle And Early Pregnancy, S. P. Ford, J. R. Chenault Jan 1981

Blood Flow To The Corpus Luteum-Bearing Ovary And Ipsilateral Uterine Horn Of Cows During The Oestrous Cycle And Early Pregnancy, S. P. Ford, J. R. Chenault

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Total ovarian blood flow of cows (sum of flows through the ovarian artery and uterine branch of the ovarian artery), measured by electromagnetic flow probes, followed a consistent cyclic pattern, being highest from Day 10 of the oestrous cycle (oestrus = Day 0) until 4 days before the subsequent oestrus. During this period of high ovarian blood flow, blood of uterine origin flowed to the ovary through the uterine branch of the ovarian artery and was found to comprise 20-40% of the ovarian blood flow. Between Days -4 and -3, ovarian blood flow dropped (P < 0·01)from 3·2 ± 0·5 to 1·0 ± 0·4 ml/min, coincident with a reversal of flow through this anastomosis. Uterine arterial blood flow was highest (P < 0·05)from 1 day before oestrus to the day of oestrus when compared to the remaining days of the oestrous cycle. Throughout the oestrous cycle, ovarian blood flow was positively correlated with systemic concentrations of progesterone (r = 0·55, P < 0·01)and negatively correlated with systemic concentrations of oestradiol-17β (r = -0·42, P < 0·01). In contrast, uterine arterial blood flow was negatively correlated with systemic progesterone (r =-0·25, P < 0·05) and positively correlated with systemic oestradiol (r = 0·45, P < 0·05). These data provide direct evidence in the cow that a portion of the blood flowing to the ovary containing a fully functional corpus luteum is contributed by the ipsilateral uterine artery.

Studies On Beneficial And Adverse Effects Of Dietary Buffers For Lambs, Jong Kyu Ha Jan 1981

Studies On Beneficial And Adverse Effects Of Dietary Buffers For Lambs, Jong Kyu Ha

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Experiments using lambs were conducted to study the effects of buffers or roughages against acidosis occurring during rapid dietary changes. Experiments using rats were conducted to investigate vitamin A and thiamin stability and/or utilization as influenced by bentonite. Incubating rumen fluid in vitro at a pH lower than 6 reduced volatile fatty acid (VFA) production and increased lactate accumulation. Limestone or bentonite at levels of 2% in 92% concentrate diets had little effect on feed intake or rumen and blood parameters during a 7-day treatment period using rumen-canulated sheep. However, 2% NaHCO3 increased rumen pH and feed intake on …

Population Dynamics Of Musculus Senhousia And Protothaca Staminea In Tomales Bay, California, David Mcclain Nelson Jan 1981

Population Dynamics Of Musculus Senhousia And Protothaca Staminea In Tomales Bay, California, David Mcclain Nelson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The changes in population density, growth and biomass of two infaunal, sympatric, suspension-feeding bivalves, Musculus senhousia (Benson, 1842) and Protothaca staminea (Conrad, 1837), have been investigated over an eighteen month period in Tomales Bay, California. M. senhousia, a mussel, displays two basic spawning times, one of which occurs in late spring, while the second spawning takes place in late summer. M. staminea, a venerid, spawns once during late spring. The population density of the mussel ranged from 9,180 m-2 in early spring to 752 m-2 in the fall of 1976. M. staminea had a maximum density of 1,120 m- 2 …

The Use Of Visually Evoked Cortical Potentials To Evaluate Changes In The Rate Of Recovery From Phenobarbital Anesthesia In The Rat, Steven Theodore Heggeness Jan 1981

The Use Of Visually Evoked Cortical Potentials To Evaluate Changes In The Rate Of Recovery From Phenobarbital Anesthesia In The Rat, Steven Theodore Heggeness

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Signal averaging of visually evoked cortical potentials was done on Wistar strain rats during recovery from nembutal (sodium pentobarbital) anesthesia. Several studies (Dafny, 1978; Gines et al., 1963; Roig et al., 1961) have shown significant differences between recordings from unanesthetized rats and from rats anesthetized with various agents. The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in the cortical response throughout an eight hour nembutal recovery period in order to determine the feasibility of using a signal averaging technique for classification of anesthetic depth.

The results of this study show that the recovery from nembutal anesthesia is characterized by …

Masters Theses

Species composition, distribution, abundance, and water quality relationships of aquatic oligochaetes occurring in the upper Cache River system, southern Illinois were investigated. Forty-two taxa of oligochaetes including 16 naidids, 22 tubificids and representatives of the families Aeolosomatidae, Branchiobdellidae, Enchytraeidae, and Lumbriculidae were collected. Four species of oligochaetes new to Illinois, Limnodrilus psammophilus Loden, L. rubripenis Loden, Psammoryctides (Spencerius) californianus Brinkhurst, and Haemonais waldvogeli Bretscher were collected during this study. Another species of Limnodrilus new to science is reported here, as yet undescribed. The thesis that aquatic oligochaetes can be used as true water quality indicator organisms is rejected. It is …

A Trophic Analysis Of Three Species Of Elmidae From Polecat And Riley Creeks, Coles County, Ill., Robert D. Davis Jr. Jan 1981

A Trophic Analysis Of Three Species Of Elmidae From Polecat And Riley Creeks, Coles County, Ill., Robert D. Davis Jr.

Masters Theses

The food habits of Stenelmis sexlineata, Stenelmis vittipennis, Stenelmis crenata, and larval Stenelmis were studied in Polecat and Riley Creeks, Coles County, Illinois. Rock Scrapings were taken and compared with the gut analyses of the larval and adult beetles. These beetles were found to be scraper/collectors and detritivore/herbivores, generally scraping surfaces of rocks. Detritus, green algae, and diatoms were found to be the major categories present in both the rock scrapings and the gut analyses. The cellular contents of diatoms (chloroplasts and other cytoplasmic inclusions) were digested by the beetles. No conclusions regarding feeding preferences are made, …

Three-Dimensional Home Range Of The Eastern Fox Squirrel, Sciurus Niger, Joi L. Augustin Jan 1981

Three-Dimensional Home Range Of The Eastern Fox Squirrel, Sciurus Niger, Joi L. Augustin

Masters Theses

Standard procedures for presenting home range data for species such as the fox squirrel on a single plane do not adequately represent the space they occupy. Comparisons of techniques for presenting the home range of this species on a three-dimensional basis were made using data obtained by direct observations of color marked squirrels. Three-dimensional ellipsoid models of their range varied from 9,154 m3 to 63,811 m3 and were assumed to be more accurate when observation points approached 50 in number. Rectangular parallelepipeds for the same data ranged from 9,784 m3 to 56,836 m3 and resulted in …

Description And Taxonomic Importance Of Penial Morphology In The Cryptodiran Turtles Of Malaysia, Lynn D. Wike Jan 1981

Description And Taxonomic Importance Of Penial Morphology In The Cryptodiran Turtles Of Malaysia, Lynn D. Wike

Masters Theses

This paper investigates the use of penial structure to study the relationships among the turtles of peninsular Malaysia. The penial morphology of Malaysian turtles, mainly batagurines, has not been previously described. Herein penes of 12 Malaysian species are described and compared to three Nearctic species. Each was coded for 22 penial characters which were used for numerical analysis by the NT-SYS numerical taxonomy system of multivariate statistical proceedures. The analysis failed to distinguish groups below the family level when the 15 species were tested. The test also failed to distinguish the complexes within the Batagurinae when they were analyzed separately. …

Moss Sensitivity To Sulfur Dioxide, John W. Wilcut Jan 1981

Moss Sensitivity To Sulfur Dioxide, John W. Wilcut

Masters Theses

Extensive research regarding the effects of sulfur dioxide (SO2) on vascular and nonvascular plants has been reported. Sulfur dioxide has been shown to interrupt normal metabolism, to interrupt normal reproduction, and to alter the plant's morphology.

One hypothesis regarding the lack of bryophytes in urban areas is that the life cycle is being interrupted. It has been shown that moss protonemata are sensitive to SO2 concentrations in urban areas. Several authors noted that sexual reproduction is blocked among many species which do occur in urban environments. Observations on protonemal sensitivity are probably more important than the observations …

Effects Of Glucocorticoid Treatment On The Properties Of Single Notor Units In Cat Hindlinb Huscles, Andrew James Robinson Jan 1981

Effects Of Glucocorticoid Treatment On The Properties Of Single Notor Units In Cat Hindlinb Huscles, Andrew James Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

The administration of glucocorticoids has been shown to induce atrophy and weakness in whole skeletal muscle. These effects frequently appear to be more pronounced in pale muscle than in red muscle. The present study was undertaken to examine the effects of steroid treatment on the contractile, electrical, and fatigue properties of single meter units in pale and red cat hindlimb muscles. Single motor units in the medial gastrocnemius (MG) and soleus muscles were isolated using techniques developed by McPhedran, et al., (1965). The properties of a large number of motor units were examined in normal animals and were compared to …

Eye Movement Related Single-Unit Recording In The Nucleus Reticularis Tegmenti Pontis In The Alert Monkey, William Franklin Crandall Jr. Jan 1981

Eye Movement Related Single-Unit Recording In The Nucleus Reticularis Tegmenti Pontis In The Alert Monkey, William Franklin Crandall Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Nucleus Reticularis Tegmenti Pontis (NRTP) is a structure which lies in the mid-brain ventral to the oculomotor complex. Anatomical studies strongly implicate it in oculomotor function as most of its inputs and outputs are to systems previously shown to be intimately involved in eye movement generation--superior colliculus (SC) and cerebellum. These reports show an integrative structure with inputs and outputs distributed in a way well suited for performing relay and feedback tasks. Physiological data in the alert, trained monkey has been gathered in an attempt to characterize these neurons and to classify them in functional terms. Three monkeys were trained …

Protective Effects Of Certain Lythraceae Alkaloids And Homologs In Croton Oil- And Carrageenan-Induced Inflammation, John Alan Byrne Jan 1981

Protective Effects Of Certain Lythraceae Alkaloids And Homologs In Croton Oil- And Carrageenan-Induced Inflammation, John Alan Byrne

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Cryogenine's immunosuppressive activity was first evaluated by Kosersky, et al. (21) who, impressed by the drug's ability to inhibit both the irritant- and immune- mediated phases of adjuvant-induced polyarthritis (11), quantitatively confirmed this activity and clearly differentiated the action of cryogenine from that displayed by 6-mercaptopurine. A definitive study by Watson and Malone (22) confirmed cryogenine's lack of immunosuppressive capacity at effective anti-inflammatory dose levels.

The molecular complexity of the lythraceae alkaloids suggests that several active centers may account for their unique pharmacological profile. To assess these potentially active sites, two standard models of acute inflammation were selected for use …

Courtship And Reproduction In The Bali Mynah, Leucopsar Rothschildi (Aves : Sturnidae), Ann Patterson Marshall Jan 1981

Courtship And Reproduction In The Bali Mynah, Leucopsar Rothschildi (Aves : Sturnidae), Ann Patterson Marshall

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Reproductive behavior of captive Bali Mynahs (Leucopsar rothschildi) was studied at the Smithsonian Institution's Conservation and Research Center, Front Royal, Virginia. Courtship and copulation are followed by egg-laying, then incubation, hatching, brooding and feeding, fledging, and feeding. Parents become aggressive toward their young at the start of a new reproductive period, marked by a renewal of courtship.

The female does the majority of the incubation, brooding, and feeding of the young, although the male participates as well. The male performs both the bobbing· display and the crest display more than the female does. During these displays, the crest is prominently …

Plant Protection As A Consequence Of An Ant-Membracid Mutualism: Interactions On Goldenrod (Solidago Sp.), Frank J. Messina Jan 1981

Plant Protection As A Consequence Of An Ant-Membracid Mutualism: Interactions On Goldenrod (Solidago Sp.), Frank J. Messina

Biology Faculty Publications

In central New York, two chrysomelid beetles, Trirhabda virgata and T. borealis, frequently cause severe defoliation of tall goldenrod, Solidago altissima. This plant is also the primary host of Publilia concava (Membracidae), a sap—feeding treehopper that is tended by ants, especially Formica spp. Staged encounters indicate that Formica ants attack adult Trirhabda beetles on goldenrod stems bearing membracids. Such stems escape defoliation by Trirhabda, and show greater mean height increment and seed production than their nearest neighbors without ants. The degree of plant protection depends on the duration of Formica presence. During Trirhabda outbreaks, only stems bearing Formica ants for …

Genetic Studies Of Questionnaire Data From A Residential School For The Deaf, Frederick Robert Bieber

Theses and Dissertations

A self-administered thirteen page Hearing Loss Questionnaire (HLQ) was designed in order to systematically collect medical and family history data on deaf children and their families. Data were collected from over 400 families with one or more children enrolled in September 1979 at the Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD). Almost 70% of the parents provided pedigree and family history information by completing the detailed HLQ. Computer analyses of the collected data allowed a thorough examination of almost 200 medical and family history variables, providing useful reference data on the MSD probands. Parental responses to a four-step rating scale of …

Solubilization And Partial Characterization Of An Activity Regulating Complement Activation From Membranes Of Raji And Tonsil Cells, Patricia L. Carlson Jan 1981

Solubilization And Partial Characterization Of An Activity Regulating Complement Activation From Membranes Of Raji And Tonsil Cells, Patricia L. Carlson

Theses and Dissertations

Complement is one of the major innate nonspecific mechanisms for host defense in serum. More than a dozen proteins have been isolated from serum which have a function in either the activation or regulation of complement action. Complement is similar to the coagulation sequence in that it comprises a number of precursor proenzymes in plasma that are sequentially cleaved to generate biologically and enzymatically active proteins.
