Skeletal Extension, Density And Calcification Of The Reef Coral, Montastrea Annularis: St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Richard E. Dodge, Garrett W. Brass
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Parameters of the annual and subannual skeletal growth of 61 Montastrea annularis corals, collected at a variety of shallow depth sites on reefs of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, are determined by X-radiography and scanning densitometry for each year in the 10-year period, 1970–1979. Extension (linear growth) of the coral skeleton is correlated negatively with bulk density (mass per unit volume) and positively with calcification (mass addition). Density and mass are slightly positively correlated. No one parameter, however, is a perfect predictor of another. At least two parameters, from which the third can be calculated, are required for complete description …

Cranes of the World, Paul A. Johnsgard, 258 pp. 8 1/2 x 11, Indiana University Press, Bloomington, Indiana, bibliography, indexed, hardbound, $37.50.
The Sandhill Crane, the Whooping Crane, and the Eurasian (Common) Crane, in that order, receive the most attention in the species accounts in this book, reflecting the relative amounts of information available in the literature. Luckily, those are the three cranes which have been recorded in Nebraska (and North America), and so are of most interest to us. The book discusses cranes in general under the following headings: Classification and Evolution, Individualistic and Social Behavior, Vocalizations, Ecology and …

Family History As A Marker For Increased Risk Of Breast Cancer And Colon Cancer, Robert A. Norum
Family History As A Marker For Increased Risk Of Breast Cancer And Colon Cancer, Robert A. Norum
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Cancer of the breast and colon are well known to occur with high frequency in families with certain inherited cancer syndromes. These cancers also occur with increased frequency in families which do not have a recognizable genetic cancer syndrome. The fact of familial occurrence can be used to identify people with increased risk of cancer. In high-risk people methods for early detection can be developed which may reduce morbidity and mortality from these cancers, as has been done for certain inherited cancer syndromes.
External Beam Treatment Of Inoperable Non-Small Cell Carcinoma Of The Lung, H. Gunter Seydel
External Beam Treatment Of Inoperable Non-Small Cell Carcinoma Of The Lung, H. Gunter Seydel
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
External beam radiation therapy for unresectable non-small cell carcinoma of the lung has produced significant survival in patients with disease limited to one hemithorax. New approaches to improve the results of radiation treatment of these patients include interstitial implantation, the use of hypoxic cell sensitizers, biologic response modifiers, as well as changes in the technique of radiation therapy. This includes the use of modern computerized tomographic scanning technology for better definition of tumor volume as well as the use of two fractions per day in the treatment of non-small cell carcinoma of the lung. Initial results of these studies are …

The Spectrum Of B Cell Neoplasia, Michael J. Deegan
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Recent progress in our understanding of the immune system and the development of new techniques that permit the precise identification of lymphocytes have permitted a reexamination of lymphoid neoplasms. Most of the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and lymphocytic leukemias have been characterized as T or B cell neoplasms and have been shown to possess features similar to those expressed by normal lymphoid cells at different stages of maturation. The clinical significance and therapeutic implications of these discoveries are now being explored. This paper presents a concise overview of the differentiation of human B lymphocytes, the surface and cytoplasmic markers that permit their …

The Effects Of Mowing On The Rodent Community Of A Native Tall Grass Prairie In Eastern Nebraska, Cliff A. Lemen, Mary K. Clausen
The Effects Of Mowing On The Rodent Community Of A Native Tall Grass Prairie In Eastern Nebraska, Cliff A. Lemen, Mary K. Clausen
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Our results indicate that mowing, like burning, greatly reduces the use of an area by Microtus and increases the density of Peromyscus maniculatus until the grass can grow back. Depending on the rate of growth of the grass this process can take more than a year. If the prairie is mowed every year to maximize the production of hay, populations of Microtus cannot be maintained at high densities.
The study site, Nine Mile Prairie, is one of the few natural tallgrass prairies remaining in eastern Nebraska. It covers about 240 acres and is located 5 km north and 9 km …

Wood Anatomy And Relationships Of Betula Uber, W. John Hayden, Sheila M. Hayden
Biology Faculty Publications
Wood anatomy of Betula uber (Ashe) Fernald is described and compared with woods of other birches belonging to series Humiles and series Costatae. Anatomically, wood of B. uber is typical of birches in general. On the basis of pore size and frequency, fiber characteristics, axial xylem parenchyma distribution, and absence of aggregate rays, it is argued that B. uber is properly classified in series Costatae. Resolution of its relationships within series Costatae is not apparent from wood data.
Multiple Trait Evaluation Of Bulls For Calving Ease, L. Dale Van Vleck, K. M. Edlin
Multiple Trait Evaluation Of Bulls For Calving Ease, L. Dale Van Vleck, K. M. Edlin
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Evaluation of bulls for calving difficulty of their calves by a multiple trait, mixed model procedure seems appropriate for a number of reasons. Average calving ease scores and their variances and heritabilities differ according to sex of calf and parity of mother. The multiple trait procedure automatically accounts for differences in averages, variances, and heritabilities. The procedure also allows for the magnitude of herd-year-season effects to be different for four traits as defined by calving difficulty scores when measured on: male birth by a heifer, female birth by a heifer, male birth by a cow, and female birth by a …

Purification And Characterization Of A Camp- And Ca2+-Calmodulin-Independent Glycogen Synthase Kinase From Porcine Renal Cortex, Stephen J. Beebe, Erwin M. Reimann, Keith K. Schlender
Bioelectrics Publications
We recently reported the partial purification of a cAMP-independent and Ca2+-calmodulin-independent glycogen synthase kinase from porcine renal cortex (Schlender, K. K., Beebe, S. J., and Reimann, E. M. (1981) Cold Spring Harbor Conf. Cell Proliferation, 389-400). Subsequent purification indicated that the enzyme preparation consisted of at least three forms of glycogen synthase kinase which could be resolved by ATP gradient elution from aminoethylphosphate-agarose (AEP-agarose). The predominant form of glycogen synthase kinase, which eluted from AEP-agarose between 2 and 6 mM ATP, was purified approximately 800-fold and is designated GSK-A1. It had a molecular weight of 45,000-50,000 as determined …

Las Vegas Wash Multispectral Scanner Survey, T. H. Mace, M. V. Olsen, Environmental Protection Agency
Publications (WR)
At the request of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Boulder City, Nevada, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Monitoring Systems Laboratory at Las Vegas collected multispectral scanner imagery of Las Vegas Wash on October 1, 1982. A combined maximum likelihood classification and editing procedure was used to classify the multispectral scanner imagery into 12 categories of land cover. The classification identified four categories of marsh vegetation, one category of riparian, two categories of mixed scrub, and two desert categories. Turbid water and cultivated land formed an "other" category. Area tabulations were formed by georeferencing the classification to the Universal Transverse …

Factors Affecting Nest Site Location In Gila Woodpeckers, Jerome J. Korol, Richard L. Hutto
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
We investigated the locations of Gila Woodpecker (Melanerpes uropygialis) nest sites in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Arizona. A significantly greater proportion of saguaro cacti in arroyos had woodpecker holes than did those on hillsides, ridgetops or desert flats. Saguaros used for nest-hole excavation were taller and more likely to have branches than randomly chosen saguaros. Both active and inactive nest holes were nonrandomly oriented, with the mean vectors of orientation being in northwesterly directions. Variation in nest-hole orientation probably is not due to seasonal differences in excavations because the orientation of spring active (late March) nest holes was not …

Some Plant Leaves Have Orientation-Dependent Epr And Nmr Spectra, Douglas C. Mccain, Ted C. Selig, Govindjee, John L. Markley
Faculty Publications
Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectra of leaves from 50 plant species were obtained at a spectrometer frequency of 470 MHz. Water present in leaf samples gives rise to characteristic spectral patterns. Most species show only one broad 1H NMR peak; however, the leaves of some plants display complex, orientation-dependent spectra in which a common three-line pattern is discerned. The pattern varies with the angle between the leaf surface and the external magnetic field. Proton relaxation measurements show the presence of at least two water compartments in the leaves. The compartments are responsible for different components …

Prevalence Of Extreme Detergent Resistance Among The Enterobacteriaceae, Vance Kramer, Kenneth Nickerson, Nancy V. Hamlett, Caroline O'Hara
Prevalence Of Extreme Detergent Resistance Among The Enterobacteriaceae, Vance Kramer, Kenneth Nickerson, Nancy V. Hamlett, Caroline O'Hara
Kenneth Nickerson Papers
The detergent-resistance properties of 208 independent isolates of the Enterobacteriaceae have been examined. Of these bacterial strains, 200 were able to grow in the presence of ≥5% sodium dodecyl sulfate, including all members of the Klebsielleae tribe. This resistance does not appear to be plasmid encoded. It is proposed that detergent-resistant organisms he termed saponotolerant or saponophilic, by analogy with other microorganisms occupying harsh ecological niches. In contrast to their prevalent resistance to anionic detergents, not one of the 208 strains tested was found to grow in the presence of three different cationic detergents. This sensitivity to cationic detergents may …

Financial Exigency: Need It Affect The Quality Of Biology Curricula?, Robert G. Thomson, Peter Abramoff
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Declining enrollments and financial restraints require that science departments seek ways to meet academic commitments within the framework of reduced budgets and faculty resources without sacrificing quality programs. The following describes our evaluation of the role of the laboratory in the undergraduate biology curriculum and the positive effects achieved on our academic, financial, and faculty resources by separating labs from lecture courses and reducing the number of labs required for majors and nonmajors. Several years ago we experienced increased enrollments coupled with only modest increases in funds to deliver our undergraduate instructional programs. To resolve this problem we developed a …

Warm Water Aquaculture Using Waste Heat And Water From Zero Discharge Power Plants In The Great Basin, Richard A. Heckmann, Robert N. Winget, Rex C. Infanger, Roger W. Mickelsen, John M. Hendersen
Great Basin Naturalist
Two series of experiments were completed to determine (a) toxicity of waste water from power plants on warm water fish and (b) multiple use of waste heat and water for aquatic animal and plant production. All three types of waste water from a typical coal-fired power plant are acceptable for growing catfish and tilapia following aeration. This growth was compared with fish raised in spring water. Closed, recirculating polyculture systems using evaporation pond water operated efficiently for plant (duckweed) and animal (fish and freshwater prawns) production. Duckweed is an excellent supplement for fish feed. Tilapia and freshwater prawns grew rapidly …

Activation Of A Translocated Human C-Myc Gene By An Enhancer In The Immunoglobulin Heavy-Chain Locus, Adrian C. Hayday, Stephen D. Gillies, Haruo Saito, Charles Wood, Klas Wiman, William S. Hayward, Susumu Tonegawa
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
A tissue-specific transcriptional enhancer element that is associated with the human immunoglobulin heavy-chain locus is defined. In a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that contains a translocated c-myc gene this enhancer is retained on the 14q+ chromosome and occurs within sequences shown to activate previously cryptic promoters of the c-myc gene.
