An Rna Virus In Autographa Californica Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus Preparations: Gross Pathology And Infectivity, P. V. Vail, Thomas Jack Morris, S. S. Collier

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The pathology and infectivity of an RNA virus infectious to Trichoplusia ni larvae was investigated. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and weight depression were used as criteria for virus concentration in larval homogenates and live larvae, respectively. Infected larvae were severely stunted, weighing as little as 13 times less than uninfected individuals of the same age , yet appeared normal morphologically. The virus was found to cause only slight mortality at high concentrations. Infected larvae displayed the pathological stunting response down to a dose of 0.1 ng of virus. Larvae infected with doses 100 times lower did not show the …

Proteolytic Activity In Soybean Root Nodules: Activity In Host Cell Cytosol And Bacteroids Throughout Physiological Development And Senescence, Nancy E. Pfeiffer, Cecilia M. Torres, Fred W. Wagner Jan 1983

Proteolytic Activity In Soybean Root Nodules: Activity In Host Cell Cytosol And Bacteroids Throughout Physiological Development And Senescence, Nancy E. Pfeiffer, Cecilia M. Torres, Fred W. Wagner

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Root nodules were harvested from chamber-grown soybean (Glycine max L. Merril cv Woodworth) plants throughout development. Apparent nitrogenase activity (acetylene reduction) peaked before seeds began to develop, but a significant amount of activity remained as the seeds matured. Nodule senescence was defined as the period in which residual nitrogenase activity was lost. During this time, soluble protein and leghemoglobin levels in the host cell cytosol decreased, and proteolytic activity against azocasein increased. Degradative changes were not detected in bacteroids during nodule senescence. Total soluble bacteroid protein per gram of nodule remained constant, and an increase in proteolytic activity in …

Reversible Dark-Induced Senescence Of Soybean Root Nodules, N. E. Pfeiffer, Nasir S.A. Malik, Fred W. Wagner Jan 1983

Reversible Dark-Induced Senescence Of Soybean Root Nodules, N. E. Pfeiffer, Nasir S.A. Malik, Fred W. Wagner

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Nodule senescence was induced in intact soybean Glycine max. (L.) Merr., cv Woodworth plants by an 8-day dark treatment. Dark-induced senescence resulted in the complete loss of acetylene reduction activity, a 67% loss of total soluble protein, and an almost complete loss in total leghemoglobin of nodule extracts. Isoelectric focusing gels demonstrated a preferential loss of certain proteins, which was correlated with an increase in endoprotease specific activity toward azocasein. Nodules were completely green after the 8-day dark treatment. If plants were returned to a normal photoperiod after 8 days in the dark, nodules recovered from the dark treatment in …

Morphometry Of Meat By Scanning Light Microscopy, H. J. Swatland Jan 1983

Morphometry Of Meat By Scanning Light Microscopy, H. J. Swatland

Food Structure

Morphometric data can be collected from meat by using a scanning stage and a photometer, both controlled by a microcomputer. The passive counting of connective tissue boundaries is g1ven as an example to show that enumerative data may be biassed by the ratio of the width of the subject of measurement to the projected diameter of the photometer aperture. In a second example, the scanning stage is actively directed by the observer and is used to map the radial distribution of succinate dehydrogenase (SOH) activity in different histochemical types of muscle fibers. This is accomplished by the arbitrary fitting by …

A Note On The Reproductive Season Of The Carolina Marsh Clam Polymesoda Caroliniana (Bosc) In An Irregularly Flooded Mississippi Marsh, Courtney T. Hackney Jan 1983

A Note On The Reproductive Season Of The Carolina Marsh Clam Polymesoda Caroliniana (Bosc) In An Irregularly Flooded Mississippi Marsh, Courtney T. Hackney

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The gonadal development of Polymesoda caroliniana in an irregularly flooded, brackish marsh was followed for 13 months. Ripe individuals (condition prior to spawning) were found in May, July, August, and October, suggesting either an extended period of spawning or three discrete spawning periods. This pattern is different from another study of P. caroliniana in a more flooded habitat.

The observed gonadal condition correlates with the presence of newly recruited clams in the marsh during most of the year, but failed to explain a pulse of juveniles found in February. The different reproductive pattern observed in this brackish marsh may be …

Effects On Iron And Cobalt On Methane Production From Dairy Cattle Manure, Mark E. Himes Jan 1983

Effects On Iron And Cobalt On Methane Production From Dairy Cattle Manure, Mark E. Himes

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effects of iron and cobalt on methanogenesis from dairy cattle manure were studied. Four-liter digestors with 3-liter working volumes were charged daily with dairy manure (4.5% W/V volatile solids) to achieve a 3-day retention time. Digestors were incubated at 37°C and pH 7.0 on a rotary shaker. Duplicate digestors were maintained under the following parameters: controls (no ions added), Co++ at 4.958 mg/liter, Fe++ at 20.64 mg/liter and Fe++ and Co++ at above stated final digestor concentrations.

Significantly higher production of biogas and methane occurred with the addition of iron (p = .05). Iron-amended digestors …

Scaring Of Carrion Crows (Corvus Corone Corone) By Species-Specific Distress Calls And Suspended Bodies Of Dead Crows, Luzia Naef-Daenzer Jan 1983

Scaring Of Carrion Crows (Corvus Corone Corone) By Species-Specific Distress Calls And Suspended Bodies Of Dead Crows, Luzia Naef-Daenzer

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

In Switzerland, carrion crows can cause considerable damage to sprouting corn fields when feeding on the germinated corn. I tried to evaluate a method to prevent these damages. The use of species-specific distress calls, for the first time described by Frings and Jumber (1954), seemed to be the most promising method. Agronomes and biologists have applied it in field studies to several different bird species causing damage in agriculture and on airports (e.g., Gramet, 1962; Brough, 1968). However, the literature either describes single actions or several different scaring devices being used together. To be able to judge the method, quantitative …

Introduction To The Symposium On Imported Fire Ants, Southeastern Branch, Entomological Society Of America, January 26, 1982, C. S. Lofgren

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

While there have been many exotic insect pests inadvertently introduced into the United States, only a few have had the dramatic impact that the imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta Buren and S. richteri Forel) have had on the southern states. Certainly this is understandable to anyone who has seen their small child receiving dozens of fiery injections of venom or to a farmer who suddenly realizes that his lush verdant pasture has become the mound construction site for hundreds of colonies of fire ants, each with 100,000 to 200,000 workers who are willing to attack anyone who disturbs their …

G83-684 Row Crop Planters: Equipment Adjustments And Performance In Conservation Tillage, Elbert C. Dickey, Paul J. Jasa Jan 1983

G83-684 Row Crop Planters: Equipment Adjustments And Performance In Conservation Tillage, Elbert C. Dickey, Paul J. Jasa

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses planters used in conservation tillage systems and gives recommendations for improving planter performance.

The planter's primary job is to place seed where it will germinate and grow. Proper seed spacing minimizes competition for the light, nutrients and soil moisture essential for crop growth.

Several factors influence planter performance, including adjustments and correct operation. Field conditions also are important.

Traditionally, producers used tillage equipment that created a well-tilled, residue-free seedbed for planting. Many producers now are adopting conservation tillage methods that have fewer tillage operations and leave a protective residue cover on the soil surface.

Serial Cardiovascular Adaptations During Pregnancy, Mark Vincent Hart Jan 1983

Serial Cardiovascular Adaptations During Pregnancy, Mark Vincent Hart

Dissertations and Theses

Maternal cardiovascular adaptations appear to be essential in order to supply extra circulation to both the developing fetus and maternal system during a successful pregnancy. Since inadequate cardiovascular adjustments may produce abortions or maternal morbidity, the characterization of maternal cardiovascular changes during pregnancy and the elaboration of the underlying mechanism for these changes are essential to the understanding of how the heart enlarges during pregnancy and what significance this enlargement might have. To provide needed information regarding this time course and extent of maternal cardiac enlargement and the hormonal and hemodynamic changes which may be responsible for these changes, the …

A Population Study Of Three Iris (Iridaceae) Species Native To The Siskiyou Mountains In Southwestern Oregon And Adjacent California, Carol Anne Wilson Jan 1983

A Population Study Of Three Iris (Iridaceae) Species Native To The Siskiyou Mountains In Southwestern Oregon And Adjacent California, Carol Anne Wilson

Dissertations and Theses

The series Californicae is a natural grouping of Iris species native to Oregon, Washington and California. Natural and experimental hybridization is characteristic of the series which has led to confusing taxonomies for some species. Populations of species belonging to this series and found on the northwestern slopes of the Siskiyou Mountains cf southwestern Oregon and adjacent California were investigated. Methods used were numerical classification techniques for morphological characters including both discriminant and K-means cluster analyses and a chemotaxonomi c analysis of flavonoid pigments using thin layer chromatography.

Origin Of Human Trisomy 21 Mosaicism, Diane Dusenbery Waggoner Jan 1983

Origin Of Human Trisomy 21 Mosaicism, Diane Dusenbery Waggoner

Dissertations and Theses

Down Syndrome is a human condition caused by an extra copy of a #21 chromosome. At least one to two percent of free (not translocated) trisomy 21 cases are mosaics, i.e., they have two or more distinct cell lines. Usually, one cell line is 47 ,XX or XY ,+21 while the other cell line is normal 46,XX or 46,XY.

The purpose of the study was to establish the etiologies of the separate cell lines by determining whether the zygote was trisomic or normal. Meiotic non-disjunction in the formation of a gamete could lead to a trisomic zygote; loss of a …

Indices were used to test for trends in ex-vessel price spread (value per shrimp by size category), size composition, and ex-vessel value composition of the reported May-August catches (inshore and offshore combined) of brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus) and white shrimp (P. setiferus) from the Texas coast, the Mississippi River to Texas, and Pensacola to the Mississippi River, from 1960 to 1981. Levels of reported May-August catch and ex-vessel value of the catch also were examined for the same period. Statistical tests were conducted to determine if 1981 was an outlier as compared to other years, in …

Multilinear Models For The Prediction Of Brown Shrimp Harvest In Mississippi Waters, Frederick C. Sutter Iii, J.Y. Christmas Jan 1983

Multilinear Models For The Prediction Of Brown Shrimp Harvest In Mississippi Waters, Frederick C. Sutter Iii, J.Y. Christmas

Gulf and Caribbean Research

A multilinear regression analysis of water temperature, salinity, and number of postlarval brown shrimp in nursery areas was used to predict the June and July commercial harvest of brown shrimp in Mississippi waters. A total of 80.2% of the variation in harvest was accounted for by this model. When an effort variable was added to the equation, the amount of variation explained by these parameters increased to 85.4%. The coefficients of the two multilinear equations were recalculated exclusive of the data set for the last year to test the predictive capabilities of the models. For that year, the first model …

Mensural Discrimination Of The Skulls Of Arkansas Peromyscus, V. Rick Mcdaniel, C. Renn Tumlison, Phil Mclarty

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Twelve parameters were measured on skulls of four species of Peromyscus from Arkansas. Univariate statistical tests, multivariate analyses of variance, and principal axis factor analyses were performed on the data set and/or subsets in a search for species-level discriminating characters. Total length of skull was found to discriminate between skulls of P. maniculatis, P. leucopus, and a combined group of P. attwateri and P. gossypinus. Furthermore, the ratio of interorbital width and length of nasal bone was found to adequately discriminate between skulls of P. attwateri and P. gossypinus.
