Nonsense Mutations In The Chlamydomonas Chloroplast Gene That Codes For The Large Subunit Of Ribulosebisphosphate Carboxylase/Oxygenase, Robert J. Spreitzer, Michel Goldschmidt-Clermont, Michele Rahire, Jean-David Rochiax
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The Chlamydomonas reinhardtii chloroplast mutants 18-SB and 18-7G lack both the chloroplast-encoded large subunit and nuclear-encoded small subunit of the chloroplast enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (EC 4.1.1.39). A chloroplast intergenic-suppression model has been postulated to account for the genetic instability of 18-5B revertants. Here, we have determined the molecular basis of the 18-SB and 18-7G mutants. They contain nonsense mutations close to the 3' and 5' ends of their large-subunit genes, respectively. Puls-chase experiments revealed that the 18-SB mutant produces a truncated large subunit that is unstable. In connection with previous experiments, this work identifies nonsense suppression in the chloroplast. Small …

Acidification Sources In Red Alder And Douglas-Fir Soils -- Importance Of Nitrification, H. Van Miegroet, D. W. Cole
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
Precipitation, throughfall, forest floor, and soil leachate samples were monitored continuously in 1981 and 1982 in a N-poor Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] forest and a red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.) forest growing adjacently on a glacial soil in western Washington. The purpose of the study was to quantify the relative importance of atmospheric vs. natural sources of H+ input to forest soil acidification, and to determine the role of N transformation processes in the overall H+ balance of soils with different N status. Rainwater samples had an avg pH of 4.7 and annual H+ deposition via precipitation averaged 320 …

Application Of Electron Spin Resonance Techniques To Model Starch Systems, L. E. Pearce, E. A. Davis, J. Gordon, W. G. Miller
Food Structure
Starch model systems were examined by electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques with either 16-DOXYL-stearic acid or TEMPO spin probes in water or hexane. Room temperature starchwater- 16-DOXYL-stearic acid spectra showed strong adsorption occurred between the starch and probe. Starch-water-TEMPO spectra at room temperature did not show strong adsorption between starch and probe, but did show some slowed motion of the probe as a result of different local environments experienced by the probe within the starch granule. Starch-water-probe spectra from systems heated from 45-95° C showed no major differences from unheated samples. Also, no major spectral differences existed for each starch …

Biology Faculty Publications
Wind Dispersal In Californian Desert Plants: Experimental Studies And Conceptual Considerations, Jay C. Maddox, Sherwin Carlquist
Wind Dispersal In Californian Desert Plants: Experimental Studies And Conceptual Considerations, Jay C. Maddox, Sherwin Carlquist
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Because of the important role wind is alleged to have in dispersal of fruits and seeds in desert plants, diaspores were collected for experimental study of 14 species from two Sonoran Desert localities of Imperial Co., California. Field observations on natural dispersal of these species also were made. Although all 14 species were not judged to be primarily adapted to anemochory, tests on air transport capability were made using a calibrated and modified seed-blowing machine. Diaspores were tested individually and results for 20 trials averaged for each experimental condition. In one series of tests, lofting ability was determined. In other …

Experimental Studies On Epizoochorous Dispersal In Californian Plants, Sherwin Carlquist, Quinn Pauly
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Experiments studying degrees of adherence ability to various surfaces were undertaken with presumably epizoochorous diaspores of 14 native and eight introduced species from southern California. A commonly available laboratory shaker was modified so as to provide a standard means for dislodging diaspores from surfaces. Diaspores were dropped onto a cloth-covered board and percentages of dislodged diaspores recorded after inversion and then after intervals of shaking. Three fabrics were used: a velvet with short pile, an artificial wood with short curly strands, and a furlike fabric with straight strands. Attachment to the velvet was nil for most species, showing that a …

The Effects Of Weathered Crude Oil From The M/T Alvenus Spill On Eggs And Yolk-Sac Larvae Of Red Drum (Sciaenops Ocellatus), George J. Guillen, Dennis Palafox
Gulf and Caribbean Research
The Biitish tanker M/T ALVENUS ran aground 16.1 km south of Cameron, Louisiana, on 30 July 1984. An estimated 10,157 MT of Venezuelan crude oil were spilled into the Gulf of Mexico. Approximately 2,700 MT of the heavy viscous oil impacted beaches and an additional 1,360 MT remained in the subtidal areas of west Galveston Island, about 160 km southwest of the accident site. Red drum, which spawn in the Gulf of Mexico in the fall, could have been seriously impacted by oil concentrations potentially lethal to eggs or larvae. The impact of weathered crude oil on the survival, growth, …

Tanaidacea (Crustacea: Peracardia) Of The Gulf Of Mexico. Iv. On Nototanoides Trifurcatus Gen. Nov., Sp. Nov., With A Key To The Genera Of The Nototanaidae, Jurgen Sieg, Richard W. Heard
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Nototanoides trifurcatus gen. nov., sp. nov. is described and illustrated from the Gulf of Mexico. Nototanoides differs from the other genera of the family by the male possessing a vestigial maxilliped. It most closely resembles the genera Nototanais and Androtanais. In addition to the differences of the maxillipeds the males of Nototanoides can be separated by the 4-segmented antenna 1 and the females are distinguished by the trifurcate spine on the second segment of the palp of the maxilliped. A key to known genera of the family Nototanaidae is presented.

Surgical Sterilization Of Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon Idella Val.), David H. Clippinger
Surgical Sterilization Of Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon Idella Val.), David H. Clippinger
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
In November, 1983, 93 sexually immature and 33 mature grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella Val.) were surgically sterilized by clipping the gonaduct or removing a section of the ovaries of testes through a ventral incision between the pelvic girdle and the vent. No mortality occurred from this procedure. After six months (May, 1984), 95.7% of the immature and 100% of the mature grass carp had at least some gonadal tissue regeneration. Fifty-nine percent of the immature fish regenerated a pathway for the eggs or milt to enter the environment. Artificial spawning of the mature female grass carp was 66.7% successful. Over …

Trends In Genetic And Phenotypic Variances For Milk Production, S. L. Mirande, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Residual standard deviations estimated separately for each year of first freshening from first lactation milk records of artificially sired Holstein cows increased from 1960 to 1982, especially after 1976. The pattern on the square root scale was similar. On the logarithmic scale, residual standard deviations were smallest in the middle of the time period. Heritabilities estimated from paternal half-sib correlations were greater than .30 on all scales until about 1976 when estimates began to go below .20. Estimates were similar for untransformed and transformed records. When records were divided into four herd production groups within each year, the same patterns …

The Nutritional Value Of Normal And High Lysine Corns For Weanling And Growing-Finishing Swine When Fed At Four Lysine Levels, G. L. Asche, A. J. Lewis, E. R. Peo, Jr., J. D. Crenshaw
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
One-hundred-ninety-two weanling pigs from two separate trials, (initial weight 6.0 and 5.6 kg) and 400 growing-finishing pigs (initial weight 17 kg) were fed normal and high lysine corn diets containing four levels of lysine in a 2 • 4 factorial arrangement. Crossbred (Large White • Landrace x Duroc) pigs were used in all experiments. The objectives of the experiments were to (1) compare normal and high lysine corn when fed at different lysine levels, (2) determine the lysine requirements for the three stages of growth and (3) evaluate the effect of protein level on the lysine requirement. All diets were …
Sex Differences In The Recognition Of Infant Facial Expressions Of Emotion: The Primary Caretaker Hypothesis, Raymond B. Hames, Wayne A. Babchuk
Sex Differences In The Recognition Of Infant Facial Expressions Of Emotion: The Primary Caretaker Hypothesis, Raymond B. Hames, Wayne A. Babchuk
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Although much research has been devoted to studying sex differences In functioning (e.g., Maccoby and Jacklin 1974), most efforts have been directed toward documenting or elucidating the proximate causes of sex differences. Few attempts have been made, however, to explain the ultimate causes of these differences or the selective pressures that have led to the development or psychological differences between males and females [for exception see Symons (1979) and Daly and Wilson (1983)]. Toward this end of blending psychology with evolutionary theory we develop what we call the " primary caretaker hypothesis," which predicts that the sex that through evolutionary …
Heritability Estimates And Adjustment Factors For Yearling Testicular Size In Different Breeds Of Beef Bulls, Donald D. Lunstra, Keith E. Gregory, Larry V. Cundiff
Heritability Estimates And Adjustment Factors For Yearling Testicular Size In Different Breeds Of Beef Bulls, Donald D. Lunstra, Keith E. Gregory, Larry V. Cundiff
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Little information is available on breed differences and variation in testicular development of young beef bulls. Larger testis size in young bulls is favorably correlated with sperm output, age at puberty, mature testicular size, and pregnancy rate. If testicular size is to be considered in selection programs for young sires, the breed differences, heritabilities, and relationships of testicular measurements to age and body weight must be established for young beef bulls.
The objectives of this study were to measure and define breed differences and variations in testicular size of yearling beef bulls, determine the heritability of yearling testicular size, and …

Biochemical Evidence For Hybridization In Fire Ants, Robert K. Vander Meer, Clifford S. Lofgren, Francisco M. Alvarez
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
Hybridization in social insects has been predicted on a theoretical basis by Pearson (1983); however, it is not a commonly reported phenomenon among ants. We recently found support for this theory when we discovered unique biochemical evidence for hybridization between Solenopsis invicta Buren and Solenopsis richteri Forel, two South American fire ant species that were inadvertently introduced into the southeastern United States.

Equilibrium Moisture Properties Of Corn Cobs, G. M. White, Thomas C. Bridges, Samuel G. Mcneill, Douglas G. Overhults
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Equilibrium moisture content-equilibrium relative humidity data for broken corn cobs have been determined for both desorption and adsorption conditions for three temperature levels and five moisture levels. The Modified Henderson and Chung equilibrium moisture equations have been fitted to these data by using non-linear regression procedures to estimate equation parameters. Both equations adequately represented the experimental data. A test of varietal differences indicated no significant difference in cob desorption ERH values for three selected corn varieties.

Vasicentric Tracheids As A Drought Survival Mechanism In The Woody Flora Of Southern California And Similar Regions; Review Of Vasicentric Tracheids, Sherwin Carlquist
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Vasicentric tracheids are defined as tracheids present adjacent to vessels in a wood which also possesses libriform fibers or fiber-tracheids as imperforate tracheary elements. Vasculartracheids would correspond with this definition, but are defined as occurring only in latewood, whereas vasicentric tracheids occur throughout a growth ring or in wood of a diffuse-porous species. V asicentric tracheids offer a subsidiary conducting system which can supply stems and leaves when the vessels to which vasicentric tracheids are adjacent fail because of air embolisms. True tracheids (present as the sole imperforate tracheary element type in the woods in which they occur) have much …
Vegetative Anatomy And Familial Placement Of Tovaria, Sherwin Carlquist
Vegetative Anatomy And Familial Placement Of Tovaria, Sherwin Carlquist
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Leaf, stem, node, and wood anatomy are examined for Tovaria pendula collections from Peru. Features claimed to separate Tovaria from Capparaceae have hitherto included exstipulate nodes and paracytic stomata. However, the presence of stipules and of anomocytic stomata is demonstrated, together with occurrence of probable myrosin cells in leaves and stems. The nodal type is one reported from Capparaceae. This leaves features of gynoecium and fruit, chiefly, as means of distinguishing Tovaria from Capparaceae: ovary nonstipitate, 6-8 loculate, with axile placentation; fruit a berry; ovules with two nucellus layers; endosperm well developed. These features are considered insufficient to maintain recognition …
