Nutrition In Thailand, Methee Larptavee May 1966

Nutrition In Thailand, Methee Larptavee

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Thailand is located in souteast Asia between Burman, Laos, and Cambodia. It has a long coast line as one strip of land reaches out into the sea. It has a warm climate with much rain, especially in the south. There are 27 million people in the area of 200,000 square miles. Rice ranks number one in the Thailand diet. Next to rice is fish, both from fresh water and from the sea.

A nutritional survey was first made in Thailand in Bang Chan Village in 1952-54, in connection with the Cornell-Thailand project. Since the results covered only a small segment …

Immunity To Ostertagiasis In Calves, Leo F. Lejambre May 1966

Immunity To Ostertagiasis In Calves, Leo F. Lejambre

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Parasites are responsible for heavy economic loss to the livestock industry. The losses in cattle due to parasitism can only be roughly estimated, since many cattle do not die or become visibly sick. However, there are more subtle losses such as reduced growth rate, and decreased meat and milk production (Levine, 1961). In 1954 the U. S. Department of Agriculture published an estimate of the losses in agriculture over the 10 year period, 1942-1951. At that time, the best judgement of specialists in the Department of Agriculture placed the annual loss to parasitism in cattle at $19,026,000 of which $8,989,000 …

A Study Of Amino Acid, Protein, Organic Acid And Carbohydrate Changes Occurring During Germination Of Peach Seeds, Lee Chao

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Conditions required for seed germination are different among species. Some seed of tropical and subtropical plants may germinate before the maturation of their fleshy fruit, e.g. papaya species, while seed from most deciduous trees have a period of after-ripening before germination. The after-ripening period, also referred to as rest or dormancy has also been observed in some vegetable crops and ornamental flowers.

The Effect Of Decomposing Organic Matter On Zinc Level In Soil And Plants, Kamilia Shoukry Mohamed Shoukry May 1966

The Effect Of Decomposing Organic Matter On Zinc Level In Soil And Plants, Kamilia Shoukry Mohamed Shoukry

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

That proportion of the total zinc (Zn) in the soil that is available to plants is variable, and little is known about the various forms of Zn or even the extent to which it occurs. Because of the complexity of the problem, most workers have approached the problem of availability of Zn to plants from the opposite point of view, that is, the forms in which the added or available Zn becomes unavailable.

Studies On Amino Acid Balance In Three Fish Meals, Krachang Wisutharom May 1966

Studies On Amino Acid Balance In Three Fish Meals, Krachang Wisutharom

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

High levels of fish mean cannot be used in chick diets in the United States because of the relatively high cost as compared to soybean meal. In certain areas or countries where large amounts of fish meal are produced, it may be economically feasible to use fish meal as the major protein supplement in the poultry rations.

Feed consumed by poultry must provide most of the materials the birds need for growth or to produce eggs. Those who formulate feed must select ingredients and combine them in proportions which will allow the bird to grow or produce eggs at the …

Neutral 17-Ketosteroid And 17, 21-Dihydroxy-20-Ketosteroid Excretion In Urine Of University Women During The Menstrual Cycle, Shao Shen Yam

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the last few years, much research has been done on lipid metabolism because of the possible involvement of lipids in atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. These diseases appear to be related to abnormalities in lipid metabolism. Since sex differences have been noted in lipid metabolism, the role of steroid hormones has been under investigation in a number of laboratories. Coronary heart disease occurs only rarely in women during the reproductive phase. In men, the administration of estrogens results in a decreased serum cholesterol level while androgens tend to increase circulating cholesterol.

Experiments on rats and chickens have indicated that …

Breeding And Roasting Temperature As Related To Beef Tenderness And Other Quality Factors, Ruth Ann B. Jenson May 1966

Breeding And Roasting Temperature As Related To Beef Tenderness And Other Quality Factors, Ruth Ann B. Jenson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

According to the 1964 census the production and sale of livestock provided a major source of income in the state of Utah. Twenty-three of the state's twenty-nine counties received more than 40 percent of their total farming income from livestock sales in 1959. According to Taylor (1965) this is expected to increase even more. In studying the economic sources within Utah, it becomes evident that many of the state's farmers and ranchers depend heavily on the sale of livestock for their livelihood. Upon observing this fact, Taylor (1965) states that farm income will depend just as heavily on the sale …

Cholesterol Levels In Serum And 5Β – Pregnane – 3Α,20Α - Diol In Urine Of University Students, Gertrude Kuei-Shu Chiang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since there is a high incidence of coronary heart disease in humans of middle-age and older in the United States, and the mortality of this disease is still increasing, a great deal of research has been done in this field. Although many theories have been formulated concerning the cause of atherosclerosis, it is a very complex disease, and appears to be influenced by many factors. Disturbed lipid metabolism is widely believed to be involved in the development of the vascular lesions found in arteriosclerosis, although the nature and origin of the disturbance is unknown. The mechanism for the elevation of …

A Comparison Of Tests Used In The Selection Of Milk, Roger L. Stephens May 1966

A Comparison Of Tests Used In The Selection Of Milk, Roger L. Stephens

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The selection of milk has for many years been based upon the use of bacteriological tests such as the standard plate count, methylene blue, and resazurin tests. Such tests demoted the numbers of bacteria in milk and thus were well accepted as a close correlation of sanitary practices on the farm.

However, improvements in equipment, cleaning procedures, sanitizers and handling methods have greatly improved milk quality over the past decade. The farm bulk tank is a much more efficient system of cooling use in many areas. However, its very efficiency in cooling milk poses many new problems for those engaged …

A Study Of The Factors Influencing The Synthesis Of Tobacco Mosaic Viral Rna In A Partially Purified Synthesizing System, Agnes P. Fok

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Research on biosynthesis of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) ribonucleic acid (RNA) in vitro has been reported by Cochran, et al; Karasek and Schramm; Kim and Wildman; Cornuet and Astier; and Tongur and Baland in. It has been postulated that the replication of a number of viruses containing single-stranded RNA is accompanied by the formation of a virus-specific double-stranded helical RNA, the replicative form. This has been demonstrated both for animal and bacterial viruses including MS2. The double helical structure of purified replicative form of MS2 was established by X-ray diffraction studies. One of the strands was shown to be a …

The Inhibition Of Water Uptake In Sugar Beet Roots By Ammonia, Darrel Marshall Stuart May 1966

The Inhibition Of Water Uptake In Sugar Beet Roots By Ammonia, Darrel Marshall Stuart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Various ammonium salts, urea, aqua ammonia, and anhydrous ammonia are important sources of nitrogen for the fertilization of agricultural crops. While ammonia and its compounds are useful as fertilizers, they can be, and often are, toxic to many plants (Willis and Rankin, 1930; Stout and Tolman, 1941; Raleigh, 1942; Stoll, 1954; Lorenz, 1955; Grogan and Zink, 1956; Allen, 1962; Cooke, 1962; Allred, 1963; Court et al, 1964; Hood and Ensminger, 1964). There are also products which have been designed to retard the oxidation of ammonia and its compounds (Go ring, 1962). It is therefore important that the effects of ammonia …

Physio-Chemical Changes In Relation To The Rest Period Of Peach And Apricot Trees, Hussein Ibrahim El-Mansy May 1966

Physio-Chemical Changes In Relation To The Rest Period Of Peach And Apricot Trees, Hussein Ibrahim El-Mansy

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many plants require exposure to low temperature for a certain period during each year. This was determined more than a century ago. Understanding this phenomenon, known as the rest period, is part of a larger problem of understanding the factors which determine the ability of an organism to grow. The property of rest is ultimately a property of the actively growing cells, rather than that of the cells involved with protection and support.

Saponin Content And Some Pod And Blossom Characteristics Of Alfalfa As Related To Seed Infestation By The Alfalfa Seed Chalcid, Ronald D. Morse May 1966

Saponin Content And Some Pod And Blossom Characteristics Of Alfalfa As Related To Seed Infestation By The Alfalfa Seed Chalcid, Ronald D. Morse

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The alfalfa seed chalcid, Bruchophagus ruddi Guss., is a jet-black hymenopteran wasp. The destructive nature of this pest has been recognized since the latter part of the nineteenth century. Every year thousands of acres of alfalfa seed are destroyed, with infestation reaching as high as 8 5 percent in some areas. In Utah the chalcid annually ruins from 5 to 25 percent of the alfalfa seed. Much of this damage goes unnoticed, as infested seed is commonly blown out in the trash during harvesting and cleaning operations . The extent of damage is not restricted to the United States. Wherever …

A Survey Of Verticillium Albo-Atrum From Tomato Fields Of Northern Utah, Jean Redmond Musselman May 1966

A Survey Of Verticillium Albo-Atrum From Tomato Fields Of Northern Utah, Jean Redmond Musselman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Verticillium wilt has long been a major disease of tomatoes in Utah. The disease was recognized long before the causal agent was known. In 1932, Dr. H. L. Blood was given the task of investigating a wilt disease that was causing heavy losses to Utah's tomato industry (5). The disease was thought to be caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. lycopersici (Sacc.) Snyder & Hansen. Through his investigations Dr. Blood found Verticillium albo-atrum Reinke and Berthold to be the cause of the disease. He began the laborious task of finding a resistant variety of tomato and transferring the resistance to commercial …

Ionic And Osmotic Effects On Growth, Transpiration, And Osmotic Pressure Of Salt Tolerant Plants, Don L. Chadwick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Salt tolerant plants have been the subject of considerable interest and study by scientists of arid regions. Ability of these plants to survive and grow in saline habitats has been attributed to such characteristics as: development of high osmotic pressures to counteract the soil moisture stresses, ability to utilize waters of high salinity, and possession of a protoplasm resistant to toxic ion accumulation.

Forestry Bulletin No. 9: Silviculture Of Shortleaf Pine, Laurence C. Walker, Harry V. Wiant Jr

Forestry Bulletins No. 1-25, 1957-1972

"Nowhere is silviculture more intensively practiced than in the southern United States exempt, perhaps, in certain European nations. This is because of the tremendous demands upon the forests for fiber in a region of optimum climatic characteristics for rapid growth of valuable species. In meeting these demands, management instructs its foresters to shift their efforts into high gear."

Summer Annual Grasses - Kentucky, W. H. Stroube Apr 1966

Summer Annual Grasses - Kentucky, W. H. Stroube

Agronomy Notes

During the summer of 1965 , several varieties of summer annual grasses were seeded at the rate of 10-12 pounds per acre, in rows 3 feet apart, at the Woodford County Farm and at the Western Kentucky Substation. These varieties were replicated four times and harvested three times at each location. Harvest data are reported in the attached table. It should be noted that data from Woodford county are reported in dry matter per acre and that from Princeton in air-dry forage. Previous studies have indicated that yield data from 3-foot rows of this type of material should be multiplied …

Voluntary Intake Of Forage By Holstein Cows As Influenced By Lactation, Gestation, Body Weight, And Frequency Of Feeding, W. L. Johnston, G. W. Trimberger, M. J. Wright, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson Feb 1966

Voluntary Intake Of Forage By Holstein Cows As Influenced By Lactation, Gestation, Body Weight, And Frequency Of Feeding, W. L. Johnston, G. W. Trimberger, M. J. Wright, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. R. Henderson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Relationships involving forage appetite and frequency of feeding forage were studied with high-producing Holstein cows, including 60 complete cow lactations and 49 records of the dry period. Significant correlation (r= .59) was obtained between forage dry matter intake and 4% FCM yield in the lactation period. Patterns of forage DM intake were affected strongly by different stages of the lactation and dry periods. Infrequent periods of hot summer weather decreased intake and milk yield by about 10%. Individual cow differences, however, were the most important source of variation in forage DM intake. Age, body weight changes, body condition, and stage …
