A Revision Of The Phacelia Crenulatae Group (Hydrophyllaceae) For North America, N. Duane Atwood
Theses and Dissertations
This study is a taxonomic monograph of the Phacelia Crenulatae group for North America and recognizes thirty-three species and six varieties. A brief discussion of the history, general morphology, phylogeny and cytology is given. All entities are separated by a comprehensive key, followed by a list of types, synonyms, descriptions and general habitat. Distribution maps and illustrations are included. The body of this work is based on herbarium specimens and extensive field observations and collections made throughout much of western North America. These studies have resulted in the description of five new species and several nomenclatural changes.

A Computer Analysis Of Relationships Between Orders Of Chrysophyta, David P. Olds
A Computer Analysis Of Relationships Between Orders Of Chrysophyta, David P. Olds
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The division Chrysophyta has previously been formulated to include three diverse groups. A computer analysis was made of the individual orders within the division to determine the "naturalness" of this grouping and also to show how computer techniques may be used for this purpose. The computer methods are described, and a possible system of classification of the division based on the computer analysis is presented.

Properties Of The Merozygotes Associated With A Sulfonamide-Resistant Mutation In Pneumococcus, Mary Lee Stewart Ledbetter
Properties Of The Merozygotes Associated With A Sulfonamide-Resistant Mutation In Pneumococcus, Mary Lee Stewart Ledbetter
Student Theses and Dissertations
Unstable prokaryotic strains arise occasionally under a variety of circumstances and with a variety of properties which make them amenable to genetic and physiological analysis at different levels of precision. A review of a number of such unstable systems, initially identified on the basis of a regular segregation to phenotypically non-parental types, has led to the recognition of a series of criteria for the systematic analysis of such strains. These criteria are applied to a sulfanilamideresistant mutant of pneumococcus which regularly segregates to strains sensitive to sulfanilamide and resistant to p-nitrobenzoic acid, another analogue of paraminobenzoic acid. From a combination …
Studies On Ribosome-Membrane Interaction, Dominica Borgese
Studies On Ribosome-Membrane Interaction, Dominica Borgese
Student Theses and Dissertations
Several aspects of the relationship between free and membrane-bound ribosomes and of the ribosome-membrane interaction were investigated in a rat liver cell-free system. a) When nascent polypeptide chains were terminated by incubating rough microsomes in a medium optimal for amino acid incorporation, a subsequent incubation in a solution containing 0.5 M KCl and 0.0025 M MgCl2 resulted in a partial detachment of ribosomes, as 40 S and 60 S particles. b) Solutions containing high concentrations of monovalent ions (1 M KCl) and no magnesium ions detached essentially all membrane-bound ribosomes as unfolded subunits, while the peptidyl tRNA molecules remained …

Soil And Plant Analysis For Mineral Deficiencies, M D. Carroll
Soil And Plant Analysis For Mineral Deficiencies, M D. Carroll
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Soil and plant analysis (testing) has its supporters and its critics. Some of the differences are resolved if the distinction is made between the concept and the practice. Most people would agree with the concept of soil and plant analysis but the practice, or service offered, in any agricultural situation can be subject to valid criticism.
This article defines some of the principles involved and illustrates some of the problems, to provide a better understanding of the usefulness and the limitations of soil and plant analysis as a diagnostic aid in plant and animal nutrition.

In research it is often desirable to measure body composition at different stages of growth. Ideally, if the same animal could be sampled several times during the growing-finishing period, critical information about tissue growth could be obtained. Thus, the development of a simple procedure to obtain tissue samples would be an asset to the researcher.

Carboxymethylcellulose As A Carrier For Follicle Stimulating Hormone In The Female Rat And Bovine, C. Leroy Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A series of biological assays were conducted to compare physiological saline (PSS) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) as carriers for follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and to determine the optimum ratio of FSH to CMC. Constant individual dosages of 0.5 mg FSH were injected into a total of 384 immature female rats in four experiments. Treatments included single injections of FSH in PSS, FSH in 1 percent CMC at ratios (mg FSH: ml CMC) OF 1:3, 1:2, 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 5:1 and FSH in 2 percent CMC at a ratio of 1:1. Parameters of primary and secondary response were ovarian and uterine weight, …
Effects Of Manganese Chloride On Gravid Gilts And Newborn Pigs, Dale A. Wade
Effects Of Manganese Chloride On Gravid Gilts And Newborn Pigs, Dale A. Wade
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Excessive dietary manganese in young mammals has depressed hemoglobin levels, red blood cell synthesis and growth in some investigations, while in other research these were increased. Toxic levels, mode of action and specific physiological effects are unknown although manganese, cobalt and iron appear to compete for absorption mechanisms. Manganese functions in enzyme systems and in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, is present in red cells and plasma and may be incorporated into the hemoglobin molecule. Gravid gilts were utilized in these investigations since piglet anemia is an economic problem and manganese effects in swine have not been fully defined. Gilt rations …
Amino Acid Supplementation Of Low Protein Layer Diets, Harlal Choudhury
Amino Acid Supplementation Of Low Protein Layer Diets, Harlal Choudhury
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Experiments were conducted at the South Dakota State University Poultry Research Center to study the effects of amino acid supplementation of low protein diets on performance of laying type hens. Hans, housed in 8-inch cages, were fed at 24 weeks of age typical 16% protein corn-soy diets diluted with glucose to 10.8% protein and supplemented with 0.15% DL-methionine, 0.19% L-lysine and 0.04% DL-tryptophan. After about 20 weeks of depletion, supplements of 0.05 and 0.1% DL-threonine and DL-valine and 0.1% DL-isoleucine alone and in all combinations were fed for a further period of 16 weeks using a factorial design. Individual supplements …
The Structure Of An Ornithine-Containing Lipid From Thiobacillus Thiooxidans, Herman W. Knoche, Jessup M. Shively
The Structure Of An Ornithine-Containing Lipid From Thiobacillus Thiooxidans, Herman W. Knoche, Jessup M. Shively
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The structure of an ornithine-containing lipid from Thio-bacillus thiooxidans
has been elucidated. Methanolysis of
the lipid released methyl cis-ll,lZ-methylene-Z-hydroxyoctadecanoate.
Acid hydrolysis of the residue yielded ornithine
and a mixture of fatty acids, the major components of
which were 3-hydroxyhexadecanoic and 2-hexadecenoic
acids. Identification of the 3-hydroxy fatty acid was based
on the thin layer chromatographic mobilities of the acid, its
methyl ester, the methyl ether, and acetate derivatives of its
methyl ester, on the equivalent chain lengths of the derivatives
of the acid and the acid obtained by oxidation of the
natural acid with permanganate, and on mass spectral studies. …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thirty-five winter and fourteen spring wheat varieties were evaluated for their reaction to wheat streak mosaic virus during 1969-1970 and 1970-1971. Plants were mechanically inoculated and the effects of virus were measured, relative to the control plots, in regards to seed yield, protein percentage, plant height, test weight, 1000-seed weight, number of tillers per plant, number of heads per tiller, number of seeds per head, and number of plants in the 2-foot subplot. Varieties were compared visually for their susceptibility to the virus in terms of percentage infection and severity of symptoms. Seed yield, plant height, test weight, 1000-seed weight, …
Physiological Regulation Of Cyclic Flowering In Flax, Aurora Salazar Hovland
Physiological Regulation Of Cyclic Flowering In Flax, Aurora Salazar Hovland
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The flowering pattern of flax (Linum usitatissimum, L.) is cyclic in nature with periods of blossoming separated by periods of rest. To study the regulation of flowering cycles, four experiments were conducted. The first two dealt with nutritional aspects of cyclic flowering by imposing environmental stresses which conceivably might regulate flowering pattern nutritionally. The third and fourth experiments dealt with regulation from hormonal systems and included in vitro regulation of bud growth by growth regulators as well as characterization of endogenous hormonal systems by fluorimetry and bioassays. In the first experiment, the effects of light intensity, temperature, nitrogen and defoliation …
