G77-331 Sampling Feeds For Analyses, Bruce Anderson, Terry L. Mader, Rick Grant
G77-331 Sampling Feeds For Analyses, Bruce Anderson, Terry L. Mader, Rick Grant
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Sampling is the key to accurate feed analyses and properly balancing livestock rations. Here's how to do it.
Accurate feed analyses are needed to balance livestock rations, correctly price hay, formulate least cost supplements, and efficiently allocate homegrown feeds to the proper class of livestock. Sampling is the most important factor affecting accuracy of feed analyses.
The feed value of most forages varies. Therefore, test forages routinely to determine their best and most economical use. With adequate forage testing, you can develop an accurate forage inventory which allows you to efficiently allocate higher quality forage to high-producing livestock and poorer …

G77-386 Wheat In Poultry Rations, T.W. Sullivan, E.W. Gleaves
G77-386 Wheat In Poultry Rations, T.W. Sullivan, E.W. Gleaves
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This publication examines the advantages and disadvantages of wheat as a component of poultry feed.
Wheat is usually considered a source of human food rather than an ingredient for poultry and livestock feeds. This is especially true in the United States, where corn, milo and other feed grains are abundantly produced. In recent years one of every two bushels of wheat produced in the United States has been exported. If world production and supplies of wheat are high, a surplus develops and wheat prices are lowered. When this situation occurs wheat becomes an attractive alternative to corn or milo in …
G77-360 Balancing Corn Silage Dairy Rations, Foster G. Owen
G77-360 Balancing Corn Silage Dairy Rations, Foster G. Owen
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The grain required to balance a ration high in corn silage is much different from the grain needed when feeding high amounts of alfalfa hay. The most common problem is failure to properly balance for protein and calcium. This NebGuide discusses the points to take into account in balancing rations high in corn silage.

Swine producers are often confused by the complexity of the mycoplasmal infections; this fact sheet is an attempt to clarify the information that is currently available about these swine diseases.
Swine producers are often confused by the complexity of the mycoplasmal infections. This fact sheet is an attempt to clarify the information that is currently available about these swine diseases. There are three recognized Mycoplasma spp. of bacteria that cause disease in pigs--Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Mycoplasma hyorhinis and Mycoplasma hyosynoviae.

Some Basics Of Marron Production, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Some Basics Of Marron Production, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
marron are native to the South-West of Western Australia, and are keenly sought by inland fisher-men. However, supplies do not equal the apparent demand.
One solution is to cultivate marron in farm dams, or more intensively as a commercial enterprise.
This article suggests a few guidelines for marron production.
Cytological Investigations Of Eremosphaera Viridis De Bary, Richard Allen Valentino
Cytological Investigations Of Eremosphaera Viridis De Bary, Richard Allen Valentino
Masters Theses
Eremosphaera viridis de Bary was studied with light microscope techniques to determine the method of cytokinesis and to explain the ontogeny of the membranous ring separating the mature daughter cells in the intact sporangium.
It is proposed that cytokinesis in this organism is phylogenetically advanced and that the separation of mature daughter cells involves the sequential deposition of two cell walls. The first wall develops centripetally by the addition of membrane subunits. The resulting cleavage furrow is oriented by transverse microtubules found along the cell division plane. The newly formed walls separate the two daughter cells and give rise to …

Reaction Of Brain Hexokinase With Tetranitromethane: Oxidation Of Essential Thiol Groups, Subbarao Bondada, Umakant W. Kenkare
Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
Treatment of bovine brain mitochondrial hexokinase with a fivefold molar excess of tetranitromethane (TNM) at pH 8.0 results in a complete loss of activity of the enzyme. Spectral measurements and amino acid analysis showed that only cysteinyl residues were modified by TNM under these conditions. The products of the reaction of TNM with the enzyme were cysteic acid and disulfides as found by amino acid analysis of the carboxymethylated hexokinase. Failure of 2-mercaptoethanol to reverse the effect of TNM suggested that the thiol group that is oxidized to cysteic acid is the one essential for enzyme activity. Substrates glucose and …

The whole second thoracic mammary gland of estradiol-17β + progesterone primed 3- to 4-week-old BALB/c female mice was induced to pregnancy-like lobulo-alveolar morphogenesis after 6-day cultivation in a serum-free culture medium containing a "growth promoting" hormone mixture, insulin + prolactin + growth hormone (somatotropin) + estradiol + progesterone. No radioimmunologically detectable casein was present in these glands. Subsequent cultivation for another 6 days in a "lactogenic" medium with the hormones insulin + prolactin + cortisol produced abundant milk-like secretory material in the alveolar lumen. RNA of the mammary gland after estradiol + progesterone priming or cultivation in the "growth-promoting" medium …
A New Host For Pleistophora Ovariae (Microsporida), Glenn L. Hoffman, Mary L. Nagel
A New Host For Pleistophora Ovariae (Microsporida), Glenn L. Hoffman, Mary L. Nagel
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Pleistophora ovariae, a microsporidan parasite that infects ovaries of the golden shiner (Notemigonus crysoleucas), is a widespread problem for minnow culturists. It occurred in shiners held at 45 of 49 commercial fish farms inspected by Summerfelt and Warner (1970, Journal of Wildlife Diseases 6: 457-465). This microsporidan causes considerable damage to golden shiner ovaries, reducing fecundity, but most fish farmers obtain an adequate supply of eggs from young fish (1 or 2 years old) in which ovarian damage is not yet extensive.

The Effects Of Superovulation On The Reproductive Cycle Of Mature Female Mus Musculus, David F. Grace
Masters Theses
A total of 38 Mus musculus were used to compare superovulation to normal ovulation in three different areas of the reproductive cycle. The areas studied include the fertilization and abortion rates, alternation of ovarian function, and normalization of estrus cycling. No statistically significant differences were noted between the two groups in either fertility rates or abortion rates. A distinct difference was noted in alternation of ovarian function. Normally ovulating mice showed a distinct right or left preference in the number of ova ovulated from each ovary. Animals showing a left preference exhibited approximately a 2:1 ratio and animals with a …

A Cytogenetic Study Of Xx/Xy Chimerism And Other Anomalies Of Bos Taurus In A Sampled Dairy Herd, Ferne M. Rogers
Masters Theses
The establishment of normal chromosomal patterns for a wide range of plants and animals has led to the recognition of abnormalities as well as their relationship to phenotypic irregularities. Research dealing with the expression of human karyotype is of prime interest; but, closely rivaling that is the genetic study of domestic animals which are of economic importance to man.
One observed anomaly which has come under scrutiny by cytogeneticists is that of the female member of a heterogeneous bovine twin pair, the freemartin. This is a sterile animal with internal morphology showing varying degrees of intersex. Cytogenetic studies reveal XX/XY …
Calcification And Productivity In A Dominant Shallow Water Reef Building Coral, Acropora Palmata (Lamarck), Elizabeth H. Gladfelter
Calcification And Productivity In A Dominant Shallow Water Reef Building Coral, Acropora Palmata (Lamarck), Elizabeth H. Gladfelter
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Coral reefs are "constructional physiographic features of tropical seas consisting fundamentally of a rigid calcareous framework made up mainly of the interlocked and encrusting skeletons of reef-building (hermatypic) corals (Wells,1957). The principal organisms responsible for the construction of modern day coral reefs, the stony corals, comprise the cnidarian order Scleractinia, which is closely allied to the sea anemones (Actinaria). Individual polyps secrete a calcium carbonate skeletal cup (calyx) beneath the basal epidermis. In most coral species the polyps remain connected by living tissue forming a colony and calcium carbonate is deposited beneath the basal epidermis of the entire colony, thereby …
