The Sensory Evaluation Of Food Products Made With Varying Levels Of Sucrose And Fructose And Of Threshold Measurements Of Individuals With Diabetes Mellitus, Sherrie Lynn Hardy
The Sensory Evaluation Of Food Products Made With Varying Levels Of Sucrose And Fructose And Of Threshold Measurements Of Individuals With Diabetes Mellitus, Sherrie Lynn Hardy
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The relative sweetness, flavor, texture and overall acceptance of sucrose and fructose was determined at various sugar levels in sugar cookies, white cake, vanilla pudding and lemonade. Because of the reported increased sweetness of fructose and its increased tolerance in individuals with diabetes mellitus, the study was designed to investigate the possibility of fructose as an alternative sweetener.
Taste panel members were used to evaluate the products. All products were served in duplicate and only data from those judges who had sampled both replications were used for the statistical analysis. Each product was prepared at 100%, 50% and 25% of …
Potential For Cattle Grazing On Sheep Range In Southwest Utah, Jose Salvador Gutierrez-Garza
Potential For Cattle Grazing On Sheep Range In Southwest Utah, Jose Salvador Gutierrez-Garza
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A study was conducted on pastures grazed by sheep in late winter at the Desert Experimental Range in southwest Utah. Estimates of plant cover and herbage production were obtained in 1977 and used to examine long-term trends in the vegetation.
The nutritional value of the six most important species of the area was assessed by chemical analysis. In addition, a management strategy was developed for obtaining some utilization of the range during the spring and summer months without affecting the traditional winter use by sheep.
Long-term records (since 1937) in cover suggest a modest increase in grasses and a decrease …
Reduced Recruitment In Utah Mule Deer Relative To Winter Condition, Phillip J. Zwank
Reduced Recruitment In Utah Mule Deer Relative To Winter Condition, Phillip J. Zwank
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Reduced recruitment rates in Utah mule deer (Odocoilus hemionus) showed that significant losses in production were accruing during pregnancy, the neonatal period or during the first few months after birth. The primary objectives of the study were to determine the time, extent and possible causes of these losses.
Corpora luteal and fetal rates were estimated by examining the reproductive tracts of 125 carcasses collected on selected herd units in Utah and by observing the reproductive tracts of 136 female deer captured in Spanish Fork Canyon. A laparotomy was performed on each captured female to allow visual examination of the reproductive …

Production And Intake Responses Of Dairy Cows Fed Four Levels Of Malic Acid, Juan Carlos Martinez Alferez
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Thirty-two lactating cows were assigned at random to four treatments of malic acid to determine if these levels had an effect on milk production, milk composition, feed intake, and efficiency of feed utilization. Malic acid allotment for each treatment consisted of 1) 15.4, 2) 11.6, 3) 7.7, and 4) 0 grams of malic acid fed per kilogram of concentrate. Concentrate was fed according to production at a rate of one kilogram per two kilograms of milk in excess of 9.1 kilograms of milk per cow daily. Alfalfa hay was fed free choice and corn silage at a rate of 11.4 …
Comparison Of Microbial Activity In Desert Soils Of The Western United States, Patricia Ann Trujillo Y Fulgham
Comparison Of Microbial Activity In Desert Soils Of The Western United States, Patricia Ann Trujillo Y Fulgham
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Soils from four regional deserts, Great Basin, Sonoran, Chihuahuan, and Mojave, were collected at times throughout the year which would best exhibit microbial response to moisture or vegetation. The soils were analyzed for several chemical and physical properties. Biological and biochemical characteristics, namely respiration, dehydrogenase activity, adenosine triphosphate concentration, proteolytic activity, nitrification potential, and microbial numbers, were measured.
The soils exhibited fluctuations in microbial activity as measured by respiration, dehydrogenase activity, adenosine triphosphate concentration, proteolytic activity, and nitrification potential during different moisture seasons.
Increase in soil moisture as modified by precipitation did not cause a significant difference in respiration or …

Studies On Uveitis Part Ii: Hypotheses With Case Reports, Philip C. Hessburg
Studies On Uveitis Part Ii: Hypotheses With Case Reports, Philip C. Hessburg
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A number of patients with and without uveitis are used to show that this study of aqueous microbiology suggests the following hypotheses: 1. Routine techniques currently used in most microbiology laboratories overlook classical and variant bacteria which might be isolated from clinical specimens with improved microbiological techniques. 2. Bacterial forms may be present in other ocular tissue when not present in the aqueous. 3. Polymicrobial infections probably occur rather frequently, especially in chronic or subacute inflammatory states. 4. Alterations in various host factors may subject some persons to a greater incidence of inflammatory episodes including uveitis. 5. Antibiotics used in …

The Potential For Avocados In Western Australia, Michael Gregory Hawson
The Potential For Avocados In Western Australia, Michael Gregory Hawson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
"The flesh of the ripe fruit is ivory yellow, framed in a surround of exquisite green"
There is only one fruit to which this comment can apply and that is the avocado.
While now regarded as a luxury, avocados have met ready demand on major markets indicating that limited expansion of avocado growing in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australiacouldmprovide quite profitable returns.
Soil And Plant Analysis : A Guide To Fertilizer Usage, Walter Jacob Cox
Soil And Plant Analysis : A Guide To Fertilizer Usage, Walter Jacob Cox
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Soil and plant analysis can be used to identify problems in soils, diagnose nutrient deficiencies and as a guide to fertiliser usage.
Soil testing is particularily useful where large amounts of phosphorus and potassium are leached or removed from the paddock in hay or silage.
Actual rates of fertiliser can only be recommended from soil testing and only in conjunction with additional biological and economic information.

The Autumn Feed Problem In Beef Cattle Management, D J. Barker, P. J. May
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In south-western Australia all grazing stock face a period of 'inadequate' nutrition each autumn.
The Department of Agriculture's beef production research programme has for some years sought solutions to this problem, and the results from the programme have been used to develop strategies for achieving satisfactory production levels at least cost during autumn.
This article discusses the resulting techniques, and the research on which they are based.

Effects Of Nutrients On Productivity And Morphology Of Typha Angustifolia X Latifolia, V. Bonnewell, D. C. Pratt
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The productivity of natural stands of cattails (Typha latifolia) has been correlated with the amounts of nutrients in the soil and water by Boyd and Hess (Ecology, 51: 296, 1970). The direct effects of varying levels of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) on productivity were examined in our study by growing cattails in Hoagland's nutrient solution. Concentrations of ¼, 1/16, and 1/64 the amount of N present in complete Hoagland's solution (0.01Ml resulted in 63 percent, 48 percent and 26 percent of the dry weight of plants grown in complete solution. Rhizomes used to start plants contained considerable …

Fisheries Report No 35 - Fish And Exploited Crustaceans Of The Swan-Canning Estuary, R C.J. Lenanton
Fisheries Research Reports
Fishes of the Swan-Canning estuarine system are typical of those found in other lower west coast estuarine systems of Western Australia. Species representing three families of elasmobranchs, several of which are commercially important, twenty families of teleosts, and two families of crustaceans (Table 1) commonly occur in this estuarine system. The many other species which occur less commonly in the Swan- Canning estuary are mostly members of the additional families listed in Table l.

Apple Orchards To Take A New Look, J E L Cripps
Apple Orchards To Take A New Look, J E L Cripps
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Results of experiments by the Department of agriculture could completely change the appearance of the apple orchard in the next decade.
The normal orchard scene will become hedgerows of chemically-thinned, irrigated, red varieties on dwarfing or semi-dwarfing rootstocks receiving just the right amount of fertiliser, and areas between rows will be mown, or sprayed with herbicide. The clean cultivated, square-planted, vase-shaped tree will slowly disappear.

G78-395 Feeding Corn And Sorghum Silages To Beef Cattle, Paul Q. Guyer
G78-395 Feeding Corn And Sorghum Silages To Beef Cattle, Paul Q. Guyer
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Corn and sorghum silages are versatile feeds that can be supplemented so that they are satisfactory for part of most growing and finishing rations. Harvesting corn as silage and planting forage sorghums for silage have the advantage that they maximize beef production per acre compared to harvesting these crops by other methods and other cropping programs. Another important advantage is that harvesting, storage and feeding can be completely mechanized.
However, as the costs of machinery, fuel, and labor have increased, the cost of harvesting silage has increased more rapidly than harvesting as grain.

G78-396 Making Quality Corn And Sorghum Silage (Revised December 1986), Paul G. Guyer, Foster G. Owen
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Harvesting corn and sorghum forage as silage is popular because it adapts to complete mechanization of forage production, harvesting, and feeding. It fits operations where capital can profitably replace labor. If you are going to harvest corn and sorghum forage as silage you need to make quality silage. Here's how.

Partial Purification Of Heat Stable Enterotoxin Produced By Escherichia Coli Isolated From A Case Of Porcine Colibacillosis, Lee Ann Zochert Swanson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Colibacillosis (CB) in livestock is an economically important disease caused by the bacterium Escherichia coli. It is estimated that nearly one third of all baby pigs born in South Dakota die prior to weaning, and one fourth of these deaths is believed to be caused by CB (62). Similarly, it has been stated that 6 to 20% of calves born alive die from this disease (3). The term colibacillosis encompasses a group of diseases caused by E. coli in neonatal and weaned animals and humans (3). The several different types of CB are due to the differences in tissue localization …
