Aedes ledgeri Huang, A. soleatus Edw. and A. calceatus Edw. of the group of A. aegypti (L.) of the subgenus Stegomyia collected on the coast of Kenya are distinguished on the strength of ecological and genetic (isozyme) data. The preferred oviposition sites of A. ledgeri and A. soleatus were tree holes above ground level, whereas A. calceatus favoured abandoned gastropod shells. A. ledgeri was most abundant in ecotonal habitats and A. soleatus in undisturbed forest At least two diagnostic enzyme loci separated each of the three species pairs. © 1981, Cambridge University Press. The Effect Of Dietary Supplements Of W3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids On The Fatty Acid Composition Of Platelets And Plasma Choline Phosphoglycerides, T. Sanders, Katherine Younger Jan 1981

The Effect Of Dietary Supplements Of W3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids On The Fatty Acid Composition Of Platelets And Plasma Choline Phosphoglycerides, T. Sanders, Katherine Younger

Articles

Although it is not known iflinolenic acid (18:3w3) is essential its derivatives are important (Tinoco et a/. 1979). Eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5w3) is the precursor of the triene prostaglandins (Gryglewski et a/. 1979) and when incorporated into platelet lipids may influence bleeding time (Sanders et al. 1980). Docosahexaenoic acid (22:0013) is a major component of human brain and retinal lipids and is found in its highest concentrations in the phosphoglycerides of synaptic membranes and rod outer segments implying that it has a role in neural transmission. Radiotracer experiments in vitro suggest that man can convert 18:3w3 to 20:5w3 and 22:0013 (De …

Fetal Alcohol Effects: A Review Of The Current Literature And A Proposed Study Of The Possible Additive Effects Of Marihuana And Alcohol On The Fetus, Shirley Lange Kamp Dec 1980

Fetal Alcohol Effects: A Review Of The Current Literature And A Proposed Study Of The Possible Additive Effects Of Marihuana And Alcohol On The Fetus, Shirley Lange Kamp

Masters Theses

The purpose of this paper was to review the current state of knowledge regarding the effects of alcohol ingestion during pregnancy, to determine the specific issues that remain under speculation, and to develop a theoretical research design which might aid in determining the role, if any, of marihuana in compounding fetal alcohol effects.

The literature reviewed indicated that alcohol creates a continuum of fetal effects from mild abnormalities to the full fetal alcohol syndrome; current marihuana studies suggest possible adverse effects on the fetus. The research model was based on this evidence, the well documented usage of both drugs by …

A Selective Approach To Bleeding Esophageal Varices, Glyn G. Jamieson, Irwin B. Faris, John Ludbrook Dec 1980

A Selective Approach To Bleeding Esophageal Varices, Glyn G. Jamieson, Irwin B. Faris, John Ludbrook

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

It is possible that the best results of treatment for bleeding esophageal varices will come when a selective approach is used. In patients bleeding acutely and in patients with poor liver function shunt operations should be avoided, and a direct attack on the varices with either sclerosant therapy, percutaneous obliteration, or staple gun gastro-esophageal transsection should be carried out. In patients who have stopped bleeding, or those in whom elective treatment is being undertaken, the best operation at present appears to be selective distal splenorenal shunt.

Factors Affecting Insecticide-Induced Resurgence Of The Brown Planthopper, Nilaparvata Lugens On Rice, S. Chelliah, E. A. Heinrichs Dec 1980

Factors Affecting Insecticide-Induced Resurgence Of The Brown Planthopper, Nilaparvata Lugens On Rice, S. Chelliah, E. A. Heinrichs

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Resurgence of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) on rice was induced by applications of decamethrin, methyl parathion, and diazinon. Differential mortality of predators and hoppers did not appear to be the primary factor for resurgence. Hoppers appeared to be attracted to methyl parathion and decamethrin treated plants because of plant growth. Improved plant growth, however, did not compensate for the increased feeding of the insecticide-treated hopper population, and plants treated with resurgence-causing insecticides succumbed to feeding injury earlier than untreated plants. Population increases were due in part to stimulation of reproduction of the hopper, either by contact action of …

Cellulase Activities Of Soil Fungi, Jacobo Ortega Sep 1980

Cellulase Activities Of Soil Fungi, Jacobo Ortega

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

The cellulase activities of 8 isolates of fungi obtained from agricultural soils of Hidalgo County, TX were investigated by measuring the changes in the viscosity of a buffered solution of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), produced by the fluids obtained from liquid cultures of these isolates. The change in the viscosity of the reaction mixture incubated at constant temperature (30 C) was measured with Cannon-Fenske routine viscometers. A buffered cellulase solution was used as a control.

Due to the variability that existed among the isolates investigated, it was possible to select active producers of cellulase with the method followed in this investigation. The …

The Possible Influence Of Nestbox Size On Nesting Behavior And Reproductive Success In The House Wren (Troglodytes Aedon), Mary Anne Sydlik Aug 1980

The Possible Influence Of Nestbox Size On Nesting Behavior And Reproductive Success In The House Wren (Troglodytes Aedon), Mary Anne Sydlik

Masters Theses

Recent studies (Lohrl 1973i Karlsson and Nilsson 1977) have shown that there may be a relationship between nestbox size and clutch size in several passerine species. The present study was designed to determine whether nestbox size influences the clutch size and reproductive success of House Wrens (Troglodytes aedon) and to test possible cues a female might utilize to assess the size of a given nestbox. Four types of nestboxes were used in the study; they varied in floor surface from 3 inches by 3 inches to 8 inches by 8 inches. No statistically significant differences in clutch size or reproductive …

Pisolithus Tinctorius Mycobiont Inoculations As A Factor In Performance Of Containerized And Bare-Root Shortleaf Pine Seedlings On Lignite Minesoils In Panola County, Texas, Hoy Lee Bryson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The effects of artificial soil infestation with basidiospores and vegetative mycelia of the fungal symbiont Pisolithus tinctorius on ectomycorrhizae development of short leaf pine (Pinus echinata) seedlings grown in styroblock containers were tested in the greenhouse. These preliminary tests showed that both spores and mycelia will produce satisfactory ectomycorrhizae development. Various methods of inoculation had little effect on growth and development of containerized seedlings or on the accumulation of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Mn, Zn, or Cu in foliage and lateral roots. The styroblock containerization system used in conjunction with sandy loam soil/vermiculite (2:1 v/v) potting-mix produced excellent …

A Review Of The Behavioural Mechanism Of Milk Ejection Of The Domestic Pig, David Fraser Jul 1980

A Review Of The Behavioural Mechanism Of Milk Ejection Of The Domestic Pig, David Fraser

Feeding Behavior Collection

The domestic pig has complex nursing and suckling behaviour, consisting of several distinct phases of suckling by the piglets and a characteristic pattern of grunting by the sow. A review of observations and experimental findings suggests cause-and-effect relationships between the different elements of sow and piglet behaviour, and the relationship of the behaviour to milk ejection. Characteristic features of pig nursing and suckling behaviour are interpreted as an adaptation promoting even distribution of milk among a number of precocious litter-mates.

Effects Of Supplementary Amino Acids In An All-Corn Diet On The Growth And Metabolic Performance Of Young Rats And Pigs, Dale Alan Grosbach Jul 1980

Effects Of Supplementary Amino Acids In An All-Corn Diet On The Growth And Metabolic Performance Of Young Rats And Pigs, Dale Alan Grosbach

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

While there is presently an agreement on the status of lysine and tryptophan being closely first and second, or co-limiting, little beyond this is known. Which amino acids are the next limiting, and if they would give an important performance boost is unknown.

The stage of the pig’s growth at which these factors are examined may also be important. Much of the work has been done with larger growing or finishing of pigs. It may be more advantageous to work with pigs that weigh from 10 to 35 kg compared to the 40 to 110 kg animal. It is at …

Incorporation Of Specific Fatty Acid Precursors During Spore Germination And Outgrowth In Bacillus Thuringiensis, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Lee A. Bulla Jr. Jul 1980

Incorporation Of Specific Fatty Acid Precursors During Spore Germination And Outgrowth In Bacillus Thuringiensis, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Lee A. Bulla Jr.

Papers in Microbiology

The selective incorporation of precursors specific for individual fatty acids in germinating and outgrowing spores of Bacillus thuringiensis is described. The specific precursors utilized were [14C]butyrate, -isobutyrate, -valerate, and -isovalerate, which were incorporated into even-numbered normal-chain isomers, even-numbered iso-isomers, odd-numbered normal-chain acids, and odd-numbered isohomologs, respectively. This preferential incorporation by B. thuringiensis allows the terminal carbons of specific normal and branched-chain fatty acids, contained within the cytoplasmic membrane, to be labeled with 14C and, potentially, 13C.

The Analysis Of S-Adenosylmethionine And S-Adenosylhomocysteine In Normal And Neoplastic Cells, Kathryn Elizabeth Godburn Jul 1980

The Analysis Of S-Adenosylmethionine And S-Adenosylhomocysteine In Normal And Neoplastic Cells, Kathryn Elizabeth Godburn

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Altered patterns of methylation have been shown in both ribosomal and transfer RNA isolated from cancer cells. In contrast to the elevated activity of the methyltransferases responsible for this modification, hypomethylation appears as a general characteristic. The endogenous levels of S-adenosylmethionine and S-adenosylhomocysteine are important in relationship to their role as substrate and product of the transmethylation reaction. The levels of S-adenosylmethionine and S-adenosylhomocysteine were determined using phosphocellulose cation exchange or high pressure liquid chromatography. High voltage paper electrophoresis was used in a modified procedure to directly resolve (35s) labeled S-adenosylmethionine and S-adenosylhomocysteine in small quantities of cell …

Richmond Smith As A Clinical Investigator: His Work On Adult Periosteal Bone Expansion And Nutritional And Endocrine Aspects Of Osteoporosis In Light Of Current Concepts, A. M. Parfitt

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This paper discusses Richmond Smith's contributions to the field of metabolic bone disease from 1949 to 1969 in light of current concepts. He was the first to demonstrate continuing periosteal bone expansion in adults, a phenomenon of great biologic interest which is best explained if adult bone remodelling is qualitatively similar on all surfaces. He was the first to show that persons with less bone than normal have an increased risk of subsequent fracture, and so are more likely to benefit from preventive treatment. He found that blood vitamin D levels were lower in osteoporotic subjects than in controls, but …

Osteoporosis And Epidemiology Of Fractures In Croatia: An International Comparison, Velimir Matkovic, Marija Ciganovic, Cedomil Tominac, Krista Kostial

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

We examined the epidemiology of osteoporotic fractures in Croatia and correlated the results with data from other countries. We analyzed annual rates of wrist fractures in the large urban community of Zagreb and hip fractures in the Republic of Croatia. In addition, we determined mortality data and measured metacarpal bone mass In patients with hip fractures. There were age and sex differences in the incidence of both types of fracture. The incidence of wrist fractures is the same as in some Northwestern European countries, but the incidence of hip fractures is much lower. The mortality after hip fractures is high …
