The Microscopic Structure And Chemistry Of Rapeseed And Its Products, S. H. Yiu, H. Poon, R. G. Fulcher, I. Altosaar

Food Structure

The location and distribution of some of the storage constituents in the structures of rapeseed and its products were investigated. Hand-cut or glycol methacrylate-embedded sections were stained with dyes or fluorochromes of known specificities and examined using fluorescence, bright-field and/or polarizing microscopy. Results obtained from the study were based upon observations of characteristics of the various stainings, birefringence, induced fluorescence and autofluorescence. The effects of enzymatic hydrolysis, solvents and processing on the cellular structures and their affinity for certain dyes/ fluorochromes were also investigated. Major and minor storage constituents were tentatively located in the structure of rapeseed. Lipids and proteins …

Freeze-Induced Fibre Formation In Protein Extracts From Residues Of Mechanically Separated Poultry, R. A. Lawrence, P. Jelen Jan 1982

Freeze-Induced Fibre Formation In Protein Extracts From Residues Of Mechanically Separated Poultry, R. A. Lawrence, P. Jelen

Food Structure

Coagulated protein obtained by alkali extraction and acid precipitation from the bone containing residues discarded after mechanical separation of chicken was textured by freezing in semi-infinite cylinders followed by heat-setting in a microwave oven. Macrophotography was used to illustrate textural differences resulting from pH variations (4.5-6.0) in the precipitated protein, and changes in the ambient temperature used for freezing (-5°C to -32°C). Well identified, permanent fibres were fanned by the process under all conditions studied. The thickness of the fibres decreased and their radial orientation increased with increasing pH and decreasing ambient temperature of freezing. Cross-linkages between parallel fibres of …

Freeze-Etch Of Emulsified Cake Batters During Baking, J. D. Cloke, J. Gordon, E. A. Davis Jan 1982

Freeze-Etch Of Emulsified Cake Batters During Baking, J. D. Cloke, J. Gordon, E. A. Davis

Food Structure

Cryofixation, freeze-etch techniques were used to study the structure of cake batters made from a lean cake formulation before heating and after heating to temperatures up to l00-l02°C. Batters were prepared without added emulsifiers and with saturated and unsaturated monoglycerides replacing 5 and l 0% of the oil. Unsaturated monoglyceri des were more effective than saturated monoglycerides in dispersing oil droplets through the batter. Saturated monoglycerides formed liquid crystals during baking. The temperature at which starch granules began to swell was slightly higher for saturated monoglyceride containing cakes. The batter matrix between starch granules was more clearly defined in unsaturated …

Some Effects Of Lipids On The Structure Of Foods, K. Larsson Jan 1982

Some Effects Of Lipids On The Structure Of Foods, K. Larsson

Food Structure

The functional properties of different lipids in foods are demonstrated and related to the structure of lipid or lipid-water phases. On the basis of new X-ray data on the crystal structure of the B'-form and the a + B' transition in fats, the polymorphic transitions are considered as different lateral arrangements of triglyceride dimers. The physical properties of fat crystals can be explained from the structures, as well as possibilities to influence the polymorphic transitions.

Molecular interaction between polar lipids and proteins or starch is discussed, and the effect of the amylose-lipid inclusion complex on gelatinization temperature and water penetration …

Cooperative Project On The Weak Calf Syndrome, William G. Kvasnicka

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

The "Weak Calf Syndrome" has been gaining wide recognition throughout the north~est and Rocky Mountain regions. The specific syndrome was first noted as possibly being caused 'by a new entity by Dr. Jack Ward in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana after Dr. Ward was unable to relate the observations of necropsied specimens with that of any known published reports. The actual origin of the disease responsible for the specific syndrome noted in the area is not known and may have had its origin elsewhere. However, interest in the problem is increasing in view of the apparent recognition of the disease …

Breed Comparisons For Age And Weight At Puberty In Gilts, L. K. Hutchens, R. L. Hintz, R. K. Johnson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Data on 213 purebred and 524 crossbred gilts produced in a four-breed diallel crossing design involving the Duroc (D), Yorkshire (Y), Landrace (L) and Spotted (S)breeds were analyzed for age and weight at puberty. The breed of sire x breed of dam interaction was significant for both age and weight at puberty. However, differences among reciprocals were not significant, and thus, reciprocal means were combined. Crossbreds were younger (7.9 d) and heavier (1.2 kg) at puberty than purebreds. Significant heterosis for age at puberty was found for D X L (-14.3 d),S x D (-12.8 d) and S x L …

The Distribution And Properties Of Lateritic Gravels At Yalanbee And Their Interactions With Soil Phosphorus, David Weaver Jan 1982

The Distribution And Properties Of Lateritic Gravels At Yalanbee And Their Interactions With Soil Phosphorus, David Weaver

All other publications

This study aimed at investigating the distributive patterns and properties of lateritic gravels at "Yalanbee" (C.S.I.R.O. research station) and how these properties and patterns e ffect the adsorption of phosphorus onto the lateritic gravels. It also aimed partly at investigating the effect of the presence of lateritic gravels on the adsorption of phosphate by "whole soils". Gravels in the Yalanbee soil had migrated since their formation as was shown by their abundance and large size at the top of a slope which graded to less abundant, smaller and more rounded gravels further down the s lope. The distribution of gravels …

Observations On The Food And Food Habits Of Clapper Rails (Rallus Longirostris Boddaert) From Tidal Marshes Along The East And Gulf Coasts Of The United States, Richard W. Heard Jan 1982

Observations On The Food And Food Habits Of Clapper Rails (Rallus Longirostris Boddaert) From Tidal Marshes Along The East And Gulf Coasts Of The United States, Richard W. Heard

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The feeding habits of five nominal subspecies of clapper rails (Rallus longirostris Boddaert) collected in tidal marshes along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of the United States are compared. Data on the food from the stomachs of 183 rails were analyzed and the earlier literature critically reviewed. During the warmer months (May through early fall), crabs, predominantly Uca spp., comprised the major part of the food items found. Limited data on a few rails collected during late fall and winter, when Uca spp. are not usually available, indicate that snails then become a major part of the clapper rail’s …

Evaluation Of Flow-Through, Static, And Recirculating Systems For The Intensive Culture Of The Gulf Killifish Fundulus Grandis With Observations On A Solar-Heated Recirculating System For The Bait Industry, John T. Ogle, Mobashir A. Solangi Jan 1982

Evaluation Of Flow-Through, Static, And Recirculating Systems For The Intensive Culture Of The Gulf Killifish Fundulus Grandis With Observations On A Solar-Heated Recirculating System For The Bait Industry, John T. Ogle, Mobashir A. Solangi

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Three systems (flow-through, static, and recirculating) for intensive culture of the Gulf killifish (Fundulus grandis) for bait were evaluated. The outdoor recirculating system proved most successful. Killifish maintained in this system attained an average weight of over 2.0 gm in 42 days, an acceptable market size. Whereas the solar-heated recirculating system sustained fish densities equivalent to 1,000,000/ha and a survival rate of 86%, growth of killifish in this system was less than that observed in both the static and outdoor recirculating systems. Algae appeared to be an important nutritional component of the diet of juvenile killifish. Individuals of …

Polygyny And Polydomy In Three North American Species Of The Ant Genus Leptothorax Mayr (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), Thomas M. Alloway, Robin Stuart, Cynthia Thomas, Alfred Buschinger, Mary Talbot

Faculty Scholarship

This paper deals with certain behavioral and ecological factors which may be relevant to the evolution and maintenance of social parasitism in ants. We will argue that some of the same factors which might predispose one species to evolve into a social parasite might make resistance to parasitism difficult for a closely related species.

The Grazing Value Of Saltbushes, A J. Clarke Jan 1982

The Grazing Value Of Saltbushes, A J. Clarke

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Many Western Australian/armers have obtained useful grazing from their salt/and in the past, both from natural stands of salt tolerant plants and from areas planted to a variety of introduced salt tolerant plants. The benefits provided by such grazing have been hard to assess because no quantitative figures were available. However, grazing trials now in progress are showing that salt tolerant shrubs can carry similar stocking rates to clover-based pastures in the same districts. About 500,000 hectares of Western Australian wheatbelt land has always been saline, and has supported various useful native salt-tolerant plants. Other land that has become saline …

Phosphorus Nutrition On Leaching Sands., D. M. Deeley, S. M. Mason, B. G. Barker

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

The excessive amounts of nutrients entering the Peel-Harvey Estuarine system have resulted in a marked increase in the abundance of algal species .within the estuary and reduced production on the sandy coastal soils of the catchment from which the nutrients are being leached. Recent stream samplings by D.C.E have shown that the deep grey Bassendean sands may be contributing up to 40 per cent of the total P loading in the Harvey River. Agriculture Department trials around Albany on similar sands have shown that up to 80 per cent of the bicarb extractable P may be lost after only 150 …

Influence Of Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae On Water Movement Through Bouteloua Gracilis (H.B.K.) Lag Ex Steud, Michael F. Allen

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Root growth characteristics and water transport were compared between non-mycorrhizal Bouteloua gracilis and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal Bouteloua gracilis infected with Glomus fasciculatus. Mycorrhizal plants did not have significantly different leaf area or root length from non-mycorrhizal plants, hut did have significantly fewer and shorter root hairs. Mycorrhizal plants had 50% lower leaf resistance with no change in leaf or root water potentials; thus transpiration was increased 100% with a 50% reduction in whole-plant, soil-to-root and root-to-leaf resistance. Assuming that the difference in water uptake was due to transport via the mycorrhizal hyphae, estimated fungus-to-root transport was 2◦8 x 10-5 …
