Respiration, Carbohydrate Content, And Leaf Growth Of Tall Fescue, Lowell E. Moser, J. J. Volenec, C. J. Nelson Jul 1982

Respiration, Carbohydrate Content, And Leaf Growth Of Tall Fescue, Lowell E. Moser, J. J. Volenec, C. J. Nelson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) was grown in controlled environment chambers with a 14-hour photoperiod, and then kept in darkness for 8 days in one experiment and 20 days in another. The objectives were to determine concentrations of total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC) and relate them to leaf elongation rates (LER) and to rates of dark respiration (R,). After various times in darkness, leaf terminal meristems in vegetative tillers, root tips, and center-sections of collared leaf blades were excised, and oxygen consumption was measured.

Oxygen consumption was generally highest in terminal meristerns, intermediate in root tips, and lowest in mature …

Variability For Quality And Agronomic Traits In Forage Sorghum Hybrids, J. F. Pedersen, Herman J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins, W. M. Ross

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The variation among 49 F, forage sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] hybrids from a 7 x 7 cross-classified design was explored in 1979 and 1980 for the following traits: dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), in vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and acid detergent lignin (ADL). Differences were found among hybrids for all traits. Parental means for males generally had a wider range of variation than for females. The means of hybrids involving the male parent, 'White Collier', were highest in IVDMD, and lowest in NDF, ADF, and ADL. IVDMD was …

Compression Of The Duodenum By The Root Of The Mesentery, Peter A. Haas, Jawaid Akhtar, Lester Kobylak Jun 1982

Compression Of The Duodenum By The Root Of The Mesentery, Peter A. Haas, Jawaid Akhtar, Lester Kobylak

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Compression of the duodenum by the root of the mesentery is a rare pathological entity that has caused much controversy because it has been mistakenly identified as the "superior mesenteric artery syndrome" or the "vascular compression of the duodenum." We discuss the pathological anatomy and the diagnosis of the disease, and report an illustrative case. Some authors report many cases of the syndrome, while others doubt its existence. Before surgery is considered, the diagnosis should be established beyond doubt and a prolonged period of observation, medical treatment, and nutritional support should be provided. The barium contrast swallowing test combined with …

Dietary Effects On Pulmonary Function At 3780 Meters Altitude, Vicki Estes-Bruff Jun 1982

Dietary Effects On Pulmonary Function At 3780 Meters Altitude, Vicki Estes-Bruff

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Diet is known to affect acclimatization to altitude through the effect of carbohydrate on the respiratory exchange ratio. During the first three days following ascent to high altitude, spirometric indices including the forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEVp) decrease. The purpose of this study was to determine if dietary carbohydrate would influence these spirometric changes.

Seven healthy subjects were studied on two nutritionally complete diets at 335 meters and 3780 meters altitude in a cross-over design. The high carbohydrate diet (HI CHO) consisted of 76% of calories as carbohydrate, 12% as fat and 12% …

Designing An Experimental Diet (Low Fat, Low Linoleate) : Comparison Of Calculated And Analyzed Values For Total Lipid And Total Linoleate, Barbara F. Dickinson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A five-day menu cycle, low in total fat and total linoleate, was designed to support research on the effects of dietary linoleate on lipid metabolism in healthy humans. The basal diet was lacto-ovo vegetarian, high in fruits and vegetables, with moderate amounts of grains, legumes, skim milk, and egg white.

Sixteen healthy male subjects were randomly divided into four groups of equal size. All received the basal diet and same total fat (30% of calories). Each of the four groups received a different calculated level of linoleate (18%, 14%, 6%, and 2% of calories). Safflower, corn, corn plus coconut, and …

The Effects Of Freezing And Heat Treatments On The Iga And Bacteria Count In Human Milk, Madeleine Sigman, Kenneth Burke, U. D. Register, O. Ward Swarner, Patricia Johnston, Gerald Shavlik Jun 1982

The Effects Of Freezing And Heat Treatments On The Iga And Bacteria Count In Human Milk, Madeleine Sigman, Kenneth Burke, U. D. Register, O. Ward Swarner, Patricia Johnston, Gerald Shavlik

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Human milk has been recommended as the preferred food for preterm babies. Its unique immunological factors would be beneficial for these infants. The presence of possible microbial contamination raises the question of whether or not the mother's or donated milk should be used raw. Pasteurization would eliminate the need for costly and time consuming screening for potential pathogenic microorganisms prior to the use of raw human milk. However, heat treatment has been shown to destroy some of the immune factors in human milk. This study was designed to compare four treatments of frozen human milk and their effects on the …

The Effects Of Osmotic Stress On Sodium, Potassium, And Chloride Metabolism In The Mongolian Gerbil, Meriones Unguiculatus, Mark William Hagood May 1982

The Effects Of Osmotic Stress On Sodium, Potassium, And Chloride Metabolism In The Mongolian Gerbil, Meriones Unguiculatus, Mark William Hagood

Master's Theses

The effects of osmotic stress on sodium, potassium, and chloride metabolism and the physiological mechanisms governing these ions were studied in the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus. Animals were subjected to dietary regimens ranging from sodium-free to high-sodium diets for sixty days. Results indicate the gerbils were not physiologically stressed by the imposed diets. Apparently the animals regulate ion metabolism via intrarenal mechanisms and pituitary antidiuretic hormone while behavior and adrenal cortical activity are insignificant.
