Spatial Variation In Hard Bottom Coral Communities Of The Coastal West Florida Shelf, Nicole Blank, Sandra D. Brooke, Brian K. Walker

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Hard bottom coral and sponge communities differ along portions of the West Florida Shelf (WFS) in species occurrence, diversity, and/or size. However, the composition and spatial distribution of these communities are not well understood. Community transitions have been proposed in the central portion of the WFS around Tampa Bay, Cedar Key, and as far south as Charlotte Harbor, but supporting data are sparse. Fifteen sites in three regions of Florida were surveyed for species distribution, density, and demographics. Distinct communities were found between St Teresa, Hudson, and Tarpon Springs. Coral and sponge densities were highest off Tarpon Springs followed by …

Confronting State Violence: Lessons From India's Farmer Protests, Smita Narula Oct 2022

Confronting State Violence: Lessons From India's Farmer Protests, Smita Narula

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In December 2021, following a year of sustained mass protests, farmers in India forced the repeal of three controversial Farm Laws that attempted to deregulate India’s agricultural sector in service of corporate interests. Farmers feared that the laws would dismantle price supports for key crops, jeopardize their livelihoods, and facilitate a corporate takeover of India’s agrarian economy. This Article situates India’s historic farmer protests in the context of the country’s longstanding agrarian crisis and the corporate capture of agriculture worldwide. I argue that the protests arose in response not only to the Farm Laws, but also to decades of state-sponsored …

Millennial Retention Through Wellness In The Automotive Manufacturing Industry, Caroline Patterson

Senior Theses

Wellness programs are known to be effective and beneficial to both companies and their employees, especially among millennials. Even more importance is now assigned to implementing new strategies for attracting and retaining millennials in the wake of the Great Resignation. This is imperative particularly for automotive manufacturing companies. Attracting and retaining millennials effectively can be done by considering and implementing holistic wellness programs that address all four of the following factors: physical health, mental and emotional health, community and family health, and financial health. Within these four pillars, a company should integrate incentives; accessibility and flexibility; diversity equity and inclusion; …

Essential Emergency And Critical Care: A Priority For Health Systems Globally, Dabota Yvonne Buowari, Christian Owoo, Lalit Gupta, Carl Otto Shell, Tim Baker, Eecc Network Group

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Critical illness is a state of ill health with vital organ dysfunction, a high risk of imminent death if care is not provided, and the potential for reversibility. An estimated 45 million adults become critically ill each year. While some are treated in emergency departments or intensive care units, most are cared for in general hospital wards. We outline a priority for health systems globally: the first-tier care that all critically ill patients should receive in all parts of all hospitals: Essential Emergency and Critical Care. We describe its relation to other specialties and care and opportunities for implementation.

Inverted Appendix Presenting As Abdominal Pain And Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding, Moises Alatorre-Jimenez, Thomas M. Attard

Posters

Background: Cecal polyps are challenging insofar as the region represents the highest risk of bleeding and perforation during polypectomy . In addition, polypoid lesions in the cecum may represent a morphologically abnormal ileocecal valve or an inverted appendix. Inadvertent polypectomy in those scenarios would lead to serious sequelae including perforation. Case report: Our patient is a 6-year-old male with a background history of prematurity, lactose intolerance, chronic esophagitis, gastritis, constipation, and painless rectal bleeding. He presented with a acute onset diffuse, severe abdominal pain associated with diarrhea that evolved to include hematochezia. At the time of presentation, he required aggressive …

Special Issue Introduction: Writing Infrastructure, Sarah Read, Jordan Frith

English Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article is the introduction to the second of two Communication and Design Quarterly special issues focused on conceptualizations of infrastructure. While there are more continuities than differences between the themes and methodologies of articles in the first and second issues, this second issue leans towards articles that have taken up infrastructure as it pertains to writing and rhetoric. This introduction frames the value of infrastructure as a metaphor for making visible how writing and rhetoric structure and enact much of our world, especially for writing pedagogy. In addition, this article concludes by introducing the six contributions in this issue.

The Viability Of Traditional Portuguese Olive Groves In The Alentejo Region Under A Sustainable Development Framework, Sydney Soloway Oct 2022

The Viability Of Traditional Portuguese Olive Groves In The Alentejo Region Under A Sustainable Development Framework, Sydney Soloway

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Portugal became self-sufficient in olive oil production in 2014 and produces 150% of its needs, which makes Portugal the world’s fourth-largest exporter (DeAndreis, 2022). Olive groves in Portugal were once estimated to be 70-80% low-input traditional type, but rapid intensification toward a predominantly intensive mode of agriculture has been extremely fast (Beaufoy, 2001, p. 22; Silveira et al., 2018, p. 248). The Alentejo region, despite its dry Mediterranean climate and a tradition of extensive, multi-functional agricultural systems, is now home to 85% of Portugal’s olive groves and responsible for 77% of the country’s olive oil production (Dawson, 2019; Silveira et …

Introduction: Microvillous Inclusion Disease (MVID) (OMIM#251850) is a rare autosomal recessive condition caused by mutations or deletions mostly in the MYH6 gene but also STX3 and STXBP2 genes. It is characterized by protracted diarrhea with severe congenital alteration of the intestinal epithelium resulting in watery diarrhea, metabolic acidosis, failure to thrive, and permanent malabsorption that normally leads to a lifelong dependency on total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and the eventual possibility of bowel transplantation . Histological hallmarks of MVID in small intestinal biopsies are hypoplastic, atrophic, or disorganized villi without crypt hypertrophy, or immune cell infiltrate and, at the intestinal cellular …

Introduction: Foreign body ingestion in children is considered a common concern in every Emergency Department worldwide. In the United States, it is estimated that foreign body ingestions cause approximately 1,500 deaths yearly (1). Safety pins ingestions are estimated to be 1% of the foreign body ingestions in children (2). In literature, ingested safety pins have been reported to be lodged mostly in the upper gastrointestinal tract, but a few cases have been reported to be lodged in the appendix (2,3,4). Objective: Recommendations for safety pin ingestions when past the second portion of the duodenum. Case: We report the case of …
