Potential For Hydrocyanic Acid Poisoning Of Livestock By Indiangrass, Kenneth P. Vogel, H. J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Potential For Hydrocyanic Acid Poisoning Of Livestock By Indiangrass, Kenneth P. Vogel, H. J. Gorz, Francis A. Haskins
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Hydrocyanic acid or prussic acid poisoning of livestock by sorghums [Sorghum bicolor (L.)Moench] and sudangrasses [Sorghum sudanese (Piper) Stapf] is caused by the digestive liberation of hydrocyanic acid (HCN) from the cyanogenic compound, dhurrin [(S)-p-hydroxymandelonitrile ,β-D-glucopyranoside] found in tissue of these plants. Recent research documented that dhurrin is also present in indiangrass [Sorghastrum nutans (L.) Nash] seed- lings. The purpose of this study was to determine the hydrocyanic acid potential (HCN-p) of forage from established stands of indiangrass. Five cultivars representative of indiangrass germplasm of the Great Plains were sampled during the growing season for 2 years …

The Bird Strike Hazard (Bash) Program, Edgardo R. Farraro, Russell P. Defusco
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
The hazards birds pose to aircraft has been of concern to the Air Force for more than 20 years. After losing several aircraft due to bird strikes in the early 1960's, the Air Force formed a team to evaluate bird hazards to Air Force aircraft. The team, from the Air Force Weapons Laboratory (AFWL) at Kirtland AFB NM, handed over this mission to the Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH) Team at HQ Air Force Engineering and Services Center (AFESC) at Tyndall AFB in 1975. In 1986 (October) the BASH team moved to Bolling AFB, Washington DC.

Preliminary Testing Of A Selenium-Based Systemic Deer Browse Repellent, T. R. Angradi, W. M. Tzilkowski
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
Silviculturists use a variety of techniques, including repellents, to reduce browse damage by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) to valuable eastern hardwood seedlings. Systemic selenium, sodium selenite, was evaluated with captive white-tailed deer for its repellency in white ash (Fraxinus americana) and black cherry (Prunus serotina) seedlings. Selenium had no effect in reducing browsing of black cherry. However, there was a reduction (p < 0.05) in the white ash browsing level.

Use Of Woody Vegetation By Beavers In Southeastern Virginia, John L. Echternach, Robert K. Rose
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Nonbreeding and sometimes transient beavers, Castor canadensis, cut a variety of woody plants throughout the year during a 15-month study at three sites in southeastern Virginia. Ten species of trees were cut in proportions greater than would be expected according to their availabilities. Beavers heavily used viburnum, alder, ironwood, bayberry, tulip poplar, and dogwood. Winter food caches were constructed but were only lightly used.

Synthesis And Characterization Of N-Alkyl-Adenosine-5'-Diphosphates, Han-Ping Huang
Synthesis And Characterization Of N-Alkyl-Adenosine-5'-Diphosphates, Han-Ping Huang
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
n-Alkylphosphates and adenosine derivatives have been observed to be competitive inhibitors of coenzyme molecules in many NAD+ requiring enzymes. In earlier studies, adenosine derivatives such as AMP, ADP and ADP-ribose were found to be coenzyme competitive inhibitors of the Lactate Dehydrogenase catalyzed reaction. However, n-alkylphosphates, to the contrary, + were found to be noncompetitive inhibitors of NAD+.
Furthermore, it was observed previously in Dr. Yuan's laboratory that the effect of n-octylphosphate on the LDH catalyzed reaction was changed from noncompetitive to competitive in the presence of low concentration of AMP. Rossmann et al. reported that the binding …
Molting In The Mature Female Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus, Rathbun, Kirk J. Havens
Molting In The Mature Female Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus, Rathbun, Kirk J. Havens
OES Theses and Dissertations
The present study examines the hypothesis that mature female blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, do not have a terminal anecdysis. Induced molting via eyestalk ablation, size frequency distributions and gonad and limb regeneration indices from field collected animals are used as indicators of potential post maturity molts.
Eyestalk ablation of mature females resulted in ecdysis approximately 51 days after ablation, indicating a physiological ability if mature females to complete ecdysis. Analysis of size frequency distributions indicates two distinct shifts from smaller to larger females, one in early spring and a second in early fall. While migration of larger females into …

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Oral Mucosa In Vivo And In Vitro: A Review, Kristina Arvidson, Roland C. Grafström, Anders Pemer
Scanning Microscopy
The oral mucosa is classified by function into lining, masticatory and specialized oral mucosa, with regional structural adaptation. In this review, the surface structures of the human oral mucosa have been studied in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Regional variations in regard to keratinization, cell arrangements and microplications with related specific structures observed in SEM are described and correlated with the appearance of similar areas observed in the light microscope. Furthermore, human oral tissue and cell cultures have also been studied. These systems offer usable and complementary models for performing similar studies in vitro under controlled experimental conditions. We now …
Maternal And Umbilical Plasma Lipids Obtained During Elective Cesarean Section As Predictors Of Macrosomia In Diabetic Pregnancy, Dianne Greive Butler
Maternal And Umbilical Plasma Lipids Obtained During Elective Cesarean Section As Predictors Of Macrosomia In Diabetic Pregnancy, Dianne Greive Butler
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Twenty-five pregnant women were recruited for this study as they presented for elective cesarean section at term. Comparison was made between 10 diabetic women and 15 nondiabetic women: 13 nondiabetic women with normal weight babies and six diabetic women with macrosomic babies. Radial artery, uterine vein, umbilical vein, and umbilical artery blood samples were analyzed in the fasting state for lipoprotein composition. Diabetic and diabetic-macrosomic infants had greater birth weight and skinfold measurements but not greater birth length.
It appears that higher triglyceride (TG) levels found A in diabetics (p=0.035) are transferred to the fetus more efficiently (p=0.009) than in …
Insulin And Glucagon Responses To Dietary Protein In Diabetic And Nondiabetic Men, Monica L. Blomstedt
Insulin And Glucagon Responses To Dietary Protein In Diabetic And Nondiabetic Men, Monica L. Blomstedt
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Five men with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and fourteen nondiabetic men, were given test meals with soy protein, casein or additional carbohydrate in place of protein. Blood levels of insulin, glucagon, glucose and lipids were measured at fasting, one-half hour and two hours postprandial. To all meals, the nondiabetic subjects responded with a quick rise of the insulin level which decreased at two hours. In contrast, the diabetics showed a significantly lower insulin response at one-half hour (p < 0.05), but a tendency to higher levels at two hours. The same pattern was observed in the insulin to glucagon ratio. No significant difference between the meals was found in regard to insulin or glucagon responses, suggests that a sustained, although delayed postprandial insulin response, may be a precursor to the higher cholesterol and increased risk for cardiovascular disease among diabetics.

Effect Of Disulfiram On The Urinary Excretion Of The Serotonin Metabolites 5-Hydroxytryptophol And 5-Hydroxyindoleacetic Acid In Problem Drinkers, Mark D. Harding
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Problem drinkers (N=7) were given 500mg disulfiram daily for one week. Urine was collected before and after disulfiram intake. 5-Hydroxytryptophol (5-HTOL) was determined by a modification of the method of Davis et al. and adapted to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with an electrochemical detector setting of 0.75V. 5-Hydroxy-indoleacetic acid (5- HIAA) was determined using the HPLC method of Shihabi et al. (1980). Urinary excretion of 5-HTOL in ug/gm creatinine before and after disulfiram was 25.4± 3.3 and 110.5± 27.1 respectively, p < 0.02. 5-HIAA in mg/gm creatinine before and after disulfiram was 4.9±0.9 and 3.6±0.8 respectively, p > 0.16. The data shows that disulfiram administration alters serotonin metabolism resulting in increased 5-HTOL which is known to increase …

Storage Of Sperm In The Reptilian Oviduct, Daniel H. Gist, Jeffrey M. Jones
Storage Of Sperm In The Reptilian Oviduct, Daniel H. Gist, Jeffrey M. Jones
Scanning Microscopy
Female reptiles have the ability to store sperm within their reproductive tracts for extended periods of time. Sites of sperm storage in lizards and snakes include both the anterior vagina and the infundibulum. Vaginal receptacles are found in between longitudinal folds (snakes) and in tubules formed by invaginations of the epithelium (lizards). Infundibular receptacles are alveolar or tubular in structure and are formed from invaginations into the lamina propria of the oviduct wall. In turtles, sperm are stored in the posterior portion of the tuba, in tubular albumen-secreting glands. Sperm may be embedded within the cells of the receptacles, but …

The Vascularization Of The Vertebral Column Of Rats, M. A. Konerding, M. Blank
Scanning Microscopy
The intrinsic and extrinsic blood supplies of the vertebral column of rats have been examined by corrosion cast with Mercox CL2B(R). The close functional and topographic relationship of vessels to supplied structures were exposed by fractionated maceration of the soft tissues. The segmental arteries diverge into an anterior, median and posterior group with various anastomoses between their branches. Vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs are preferably supplied by branches of the anterior and median section. The vessels reaching the vertebral body from the dorsal side diverge in a treelike branching mode into the direction of the vertebral endplate. The venous drainage …

Tooth Enamel Structure In The Koala, Phascolarctos Cinereus: - Some Functional Interpretations, William G. Young, Maria Mcgowan, Terrence J. Daley
Scanning Microscopy
The purpose of this study is to determine whether the structural organization of Pattern 2 marsupial enamel in the Koala is disposed to resist wear on the sectorial crests of the molar teeth. The orientation of wear on the crests is uniformly delineated by parallel scratches on their polished surfaces. Twin blades, a leading and a trailing edge of enamel are formed on each crest by wear into dentine on which the differential wear at enamel to dentine interfaces indicates that the direction of wear is labial to lingual.
96 leading and trailing edges from 12 koala molars were examined …

Carbon Monoxide-Dependent Chemolithotrophic Growth Of Clostridium Thermoautotrophicum, M. Dean Savage, Zhongren Wu, Steven L. Daniel, Leon L. Lundie Jr, Harold L. Drake
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
The acetogen Clostridium thermoautotrophicum was cultivated under CO-dependent chemolithotrophic conditions. CO-dependent growth profiles and energetics indicated that supplemental CO2 was fundamental to efficient growth at the expense of CO. Overall product stoichiometry approximated 6.5CO --> CH3CO2H + 3.5CO2 + 0.6 cell C + 0.5 unrecovered C. Initial CO/CO2 ratios of 2 to 4 yielded optimal doubling times and cell yields. Maximal YCO values approximated 2.5 g of cell dry weight per mol of CO consumed; Y H2 , was considerably lower than Y CO Cross-transfer growth experiments and protein profiles indicated differential expression of genes between CO and methanol cultures.
Microbial Degradation Of Oxalate In The Gastrointestinal Tracts Of Rats, Steven L. Daniel
Microbial Degradation Of Oxalate In The Gastrointestinal Tracts Of Rats, Steven L. Daniel
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Rates of oxalate degradation by mixed bacterial populations in cecal contents from wlld rats ranged from 2.5 to 20.6 µmol/g (dry weight) per h. The oxalate-degrading activity in cecal contents from three strains of laboratory rats (Long-Evans, Wistar, and Sprague-Dawley) from four commercial breeders was generally lower, ranging from 1.8 to 3.5 µmollg (dry weight) of cecal contents per h. This activity did not increase when diets were supplemented with oxalate. Wben Sprague-Pawley rats from a fifth commercial breeder were fed an oxalate diet, rates of oxalate degradation in cecal contents increased from 2.0 to 23.1 µmollg (dry weight) per …
Estimation Of Food Limitation In Daphnia Pulex From Boulder Basin, Lake Mead, Thomas Mark Bartanen
Estimation Of Food Limitation In Daphnia Pulex From Boulder Basin, Lake Mead, Thomas Mark Bartanen
Publications (WR)
In February, 1982 I began a year-long study to determine if growth and reproduction in Daphnia Pulex were limited by the amount of food available in Boulder Basin, Lake Mead. To determine this, I made monthly collections of Daphnia Pulex and natural lake seston from an already established station in Boulder Basin. I cultured the Daphnia Pulex under simulated field conditions in a flow-through feeding apparatus using four different food regimes; 1-natural lake seston filtered through 80 um mesh to remove other zooplankton, 2-lake seston (as above) with an enrichment of 103 cells-ml-1 of Chlamydomonas reinhardti, 3-lake …

Analysis Of The Water-Quality Standards Proposed By The Nevada Division Of Environmental Protection, City Of Las Vegas, Nevada
Publications (WR)
The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (DEP) has proposed water-quality standards, applicable to Las Vegas Bay and Lake Mead, for (1) chlorophyll, (2) un-ionized ammonia, and (3) pH.
We have concluded that the proposed standards are unlikely to protect or improve water quality in Lake Mead. The proposed chlorophyll standard:
May harm the fishery. Lakes with more chlorophyll have greater fish production.
Will not improve clarity. Chlorophyll concentrations above 30 ug/1 have little effect on clarity.
Will not protect against scums or dominance by blue-green algae. Lake Mead shows no consistent relationship between chlorophyll and scums or blue-green dominance.
Will …

An Analysis Of The Effects Of A Low Glycemic Diet On The Antisocial Behavior Of Juvenile Offenders, James Edward Longhurst
Dissertations
The objective of this study was to determine if a low glycemic diet contributes to a reduction in the incidence of antisocial behavior among male juvenile offenders.
One hundred forty juvenile offenders at a residential treatment center were randomly divided into treatment and nontreatment groups. The treatment group ate from a diet which contained foods low in glycemic characteristics. There was no dietary alteration for the control group.
Three instruments were used to measure differences between groups in antisocial behavior following a 5-week experimental period. These instruments include: (1) the Unusual Incident Report--a systematic and objective observer report form, (2) …
Intracellular Protein Degradation In A Mesophile And A Thermophile Of The Genus Bacillus, Cameron C. Hoover
Intracellular Protein Degradation In A Mesophile And A Thermophile Of The Genus Bacillus, Cameron C. Hoover
Masters Theses
14C-leucine was incorporated into th e proteins of the mesophile Bacillus licheniformis and the thermophile Bacillus stearothermophilus. Aliquots of the cell suspension were treated with chloramine-T in order to decarboxylate the 14C-leucine that was released as the proteins degraded. The 14CO2 was trapped and counted. This allowed for the determination of the extent of intracellular protein degradation at various tem peratures and at various stages of the growth cun/e. For the mesophile, the extent of degradation increased with temperature from 30° C to 55° C. For the thermophile, no significant amount of degradation occurred until …

Effects Of Fractionated Irradiation On The Esophageal Mucosa: A Scanning And Transmission Electron Microscopic Study, M. Albertsson, C-H Hakansson, C. Mercke, H. Morner
Scanning Microscopy
The mucosa of rabbit esophagus was irradiated with daily fractions of 2 Gy to an accumulated dose of 20 Gy. Specimens were taken for scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and light microscopy investigations. Examination was made 1-10 days after each fractionation schedule. Light microscopy showed dose-dependent edema of the irradiated mucosa which also could be seen and scored from SEM pictures. SEM investigations showed that this was accompanied by loosening of microridges and a slightly increased cell loss. By SEM, a varying amount of bacteria could be seen which did not make intimate contact with the surface cells.

The Effect Of Cellulolytic Rumen Bacteria Or Their Cell-Free Extracts On The Germination Of Euonymus Americanus L., Gary Thomas Howard
The Effect Of Cellulolytic Rumen Bacteria Or Their Cell-Free Extracts On The Germination Of Euonymus Americanus L., Gary Thomas Howard
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In past attempts, the experimental germination of the seeds of Euonymus americanus L. in vitro has had little success. However, treatment of seeds with rumen fluid containing viable microflora has been successful in stimulating germination. In the presence of the cellulolytic rumen bacterium. Clostridium cellobioparum ATCC 15832, seeds of E. americanus were stimulated to germinate. Subsequent studies were designed to determine whether the bacterium synthesized a cellulolytic enzyme responsible for initiating germination. The cell-free endocellulase from C. cellobioparum was demonstrated to induce germination of the seeds. To support the hypothesis that endocellulase from C. cellobioparum was responsible for triggering germination, …
