Size Differences Among Root-Knot Nematodes On Resistant And Susceptible Alyceclover Genotypes, L. E. Powers, R. A. Dunn, R. Mcsorley
Size Differences Among Root-Knot Nematodes On Resistant And Susceptible Alyceclover Genotypes, L. E. Powers, R. A. Dunn, R. Mcsorley
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The influence of plant resistance on the size of individual root-knot nematodes was determined in greenhouse experiments. Five genotypes of alyceclover were inoculated with second-stage juveniles of Meloidogyne incognita race 3 or M. arenaria race 1. Plants were harvested at selected intervals and stained for detection of the nematodes, which were dissected from the roots. Length, width, and sagittal-sectional area of each animal were measured using an image-analysis system, and areas of nematodes in all stages were compared at different times and across alyceclover lines. Nematodes feeding on roots of resistant lines were consistently smaller than those on susceptible plants, …
Inheritance Of Acid-Soil Tolerance In Sorghum (Sorghum Bicolor) Grown On An Ultisol, C. I. Flores, L. M. Gourley, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, R. B. Clark
Inheritance Of Acid-Soil Tolerance In Sorghum (Sorghum Bicolor) Grown On An Ultisol, C. I. Flores, L. M. Gourley, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, R. B. Clark
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Inheritance of acid-soil tolerance (generally considered AI-toxicity tolerance) i.n sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is not clear. Forty F1 sorghum hybrids and their 14 parents were grown two seasons in the field at relatively high (67 and 71%) and low (43 and 42%) Al saturations on an acid Ultisol in Colombia, South America to evaluate the effects of acid soil on agronomic component traits and to better understand inheritance of acid-soil tolerance of sorghum. For plants grown at the high Al saturation levels, hybrids from acid-soil tolerant [AS-T] x acid soil-sensitive [AS-S] crosses were as tolerant as hybrids from …
Nitrogen And Methyl Jasmonate Induction Of Soybean Vegetative Storage Protein Genes, Paul E. Staswick, Jing-Feng Huang, Yoon Rhee
Nitrogen And Methyl Jasmonate Induction Of Soybean Vegetative Storage Protein Genes, Paul E. Staswick, Jing-Feng Huang, Yoon Rhee
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Vegetative storage protein (VSP) and VSP mRNA levels in soybean (Glycine max) leaves correlated with the amount of NH4NO3 provided to nonnodulated plants. The mRNA level declined as leaves matured, but high levels of N delayed the decline. This is consistent with the proposed role for VSP in the temporary storage of N. Wounding, petiole girdling, and treatment with methyijasmonate (MeJA) increased VSP mRNA in leaves 24 hours after treatment. The magnitude of the response depended on leaf age and N availability. N deficiency essentially eliminated the response to wounding and petiole girdling. MeJA was …

Rickettsial And Mollicute Infections In Hepatopancreatic Cells Of Cultured Pacific White Shrimp (Penaeus Vannamei), Rena M. Krol, William E. Hawkins, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Infections by multiple species of bacteria occurred in hepatopancreatic epithelial cells of cultured Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei). Grossly, hepatopancreases of moribund shrimp were pale white. Light microscopically, hepatopancreatic tubules appeared atrophied and were associated with granulomas. Examination by scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed heavy cytoplasmic infections by three forms of microorganisms: (1) a rickettsia-like bacterium, (2) a helical form of a mollicute-like bacterium, and (3) a filamentous mollicute-like bacterium. The rod-shaped rickettsia (900 nm long by 300 nm wide) appeared to be free in the cytoplasm and had both a plasma membrane and a cell wall. …

Commitment To Metamorphosis In Tsetse (Glossina Morsitans Centralis): Temporal, Nutritional And Hormonal Aspects Of The Decision, David L. Denlinger, Jan Žďárek
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Larvae of Glossina morsitans centralis were manually extruded from the uterus of the female at different times during the third (final) larval instar to evalute their competence to initiate metamorphosis. Parturition is a gated response in tsetse, and in this species the peak of activity occurred 8.7 h after the onset of the daily 12 h photophase. Larvae aborted a few hours prematurely were completely competent to crawl and pupariated within 1-2 h, but a portion of the puparia blackened before tanning. Younger larvae (22.9 mg vs full grown weight of 33.6 mg) were also competent to crawl, but after …

The Effects Of Glutathione On Human Keratinocyte, Manisha N. Trivedi
The Effects Of Glutathione On Human Keratinocyte, Manisha N. Trivedi
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Cultured human keratinocytes were grown in vitro to assess the effects of glutathione, a thiol, on human keratinocyte proliferation. Single keratinocytes were harvested from newborn (greater than 5 days old) foreskin and were grown in culture flasks such that experiments could be performed in approximately 2 to 3 weeks. In order to evaluate the effects of glutathione (GSH) on keratinocyte growth, experiments were performed to determine the growth curve, plating efficiency, and incorporation of radiolabelled thymidine. Growth studies, performed with different concentrations of glutathione, revealed that 0.065 μM was the most effective concentration when compared to control cell cultures, and …

The lupin seed, (L. anqustifolius cv . Gungurru), was sprouted using a commercial sprouter for up to 6 days. The seeds were soaked for 24h, then germinated in the dark at 20°C. The sprouts were used in each part of the study: Biochemical Analysis and Sensory Evaluation, Food Product Development and Consumer Market Survey. Many biochemical changes occurred especially in the soaking and early germination stages; including increases in protein (6%) …
History And Analysis Of Food Guides In The United States, Barbara B. Carlson
History And Analysis Of Food Guides In The United States, Barbara B. Carlson
Health Services Research Dissertations
This work elucidates the development of nutrient-based dietary standards in the United States from the original energy and protein-based standards proposed by Atwater in 1894 to the micronutrient-based Recommended Dietary Allowances revised by the National Research Council in 1989. This qualitative historical research chronicles the development and subsequent revisions of nutrient-based food guides and food guidance models issued in the United States between 1916 and 1991. A literature search of historical food guides, research, and review papers from the fields of nutrition science and education, dietetics, and health science provided primary sources of information for the history. A literature search …

Sterol Composition Of The Corn Root Lesion Nematode, Pratylenchus Agilis, And Corn Root Cultures, David J. Chitwood, William R. Lusby
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Sterols from mixed stages of the com root lesion nematode, Pratylenchus agilis, and uninfected corn root cultures were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Twenty-eight sterols were identified in P. agilis, including nine not previously detected in nematodes. The major sterols were 24-ethylcholest-22-enol, 24-ethylcholesta-5,22-dienol, 24-methy1cholestanol, 24-ethylcholestanol, isofucostanol, and 24-ethylcholesterol. The principal corn root sterols were 24-ethylcholesta-5,22-dienol, 24-methylcholesterol, 24-ethylcholesterol, isofucosterol, and cycloartenol. Therefore, the major metabolic transformation of sterols by P. agilis was saturation of the sterol nucleus. In addition, very small amounts of 4α-methylsterols were biosynthesized by P. agilis. The 4-methylation pathway is unique to nematodes and was …

Dietary And Parasitological Analysis Of Coprolites Recovered From Mummy 5, Ventana Cave, Arizona, Karl Reinhard, Richard H. Hevly
Karl Reinhard Publications
Four coprolites were excavated with Burial 5 at Ventana Cave. a partially mummified five-year-old child. Two coprolites were granular and dark in color and two were fibrous and light in color. The coprolites are remains of the child's intestinal contents and were submitted for dietary and parasitological analysis. No parasites were found. The fibrous coprolites proved to be remains of highly masticated mesquite pods (Prosopis). The granular coprolites consist of seeds of saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea). Pollen analysis reveals two dietary pollen types, both derived from cactus. No evidence of cultivated plants except for a trace amount of …

The Physiologic Basis For Nutritional Support In Hepatic Failure, John J. Fath
The Physiologic Basis For Nutritional Support In Hepatic Failure, John J. Fath
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Hepatic failure is often perceived as a unidimensional progression from near normal clinical function (Child's class A) to overt clinical failure (Child's class C). As this view fails to distinguish between patients who are capable of using exogenous protein and those who cannot, it hinders the nutritional support team in determining protein supplementation. This report addresses the physiologic basis for variable findings in hepatic failure and proposes a simple definition of hepatic faliure based upon ability to utilize amino acids.
Nutritional Implications Of Liver Transplantation, Jeanette M. Hasse
Nutritional Implications Of Liver Transplantation, Jeanette M. Hasse
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Malnutrition is a common problem of patients undergoing liver transplantation. To treat malnutrition, it must first be identified through a nutritional assessment. Because many objective nutritional assessment parameters have limitations in end-stage liver disease, subjective nutritional indicators may be used as an alternative. Nutritional needs following transplantation are categorized as short and long term. The short-term nutritional goal, anabolism, can be complicated by the nutritional status of the patient, surgical procedures, and necessary medications. The increased nutrient needs during the early posttransplant phase require particular nutritional support. Nutrition-related problems following transplantation may include obesity, hyperlipidemia. hypertension, diabetes mellitus. hyperkalemia, edema, …

Lake Mead Nutrient Enhancement Project, Peter D. Vaux, Larry J. Paulson, Nevada Department Of Wildlife, National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration
Publications (WR)
The Lake Mead Fertilization Project is a research program designed to investigate the potential for using large-scale artificial fertilization to enhance the game fisheries of this reservoir through an increase in the population of threadfin shad, the system's primary forage species. A substantial decline in the population of largemouth bass, together with poor condition of adult striped bass, are the two major issues affecting the Lake Mead game fisheries. Both issues have been hypothesized to be a result of an inadequate amount of forage in the reservoir. Previous studies have in turn suggested that a major factor limiting the shad …

Diapause In The Earthworm, Aporrectodea Longa: Morphological And Quantitative X-Ray Microanalysis Of Cryosectioned Chloragogenous Tissue, A. J. Morgan, C. Winters
Scanning Microscopy
The earthworm, Aporrectodea longa, which experiences an apparent obligatory physiological resting state (“diapause”) in the temperate Summer, was collected monthly from February through to October. Morphological examination of the chloragocytes, and quantitative electron probe X-ray microanalysis of their constituent chloragosome granules prepared by cryoultramicrotomy and air-dried/smearing, were undertaken over this period. Worms entered diapause in May, and emerged from it between August and September. The long-term energy stores in the form of lipid, in addition to the more usual polysaccharide (glycogen) reserves, were accumulated by early diapause; the lipid was gradually consumed during diapause. In addition, the structure and composition …

A two-year study tested the hypothesis that growth rate interacts with bull exposure to influence age at puberty in heifers. Heifers exposed to sterile bulls and fed to achieve a high growth rate (1.8 lb/day) attained puberty 73 days earlier than heifers not exposed to bulls and fed to a moderate growth rate (1.3 lb/day). Heifers exposed to bulls and fed to achieve a moderate growth rate attained puberty at ages similar to heifers not exposed to bulls and fed to a high growth rate. Furthermore. heifers receiving these two treatments attained puberty 23 days earlier than heifers not exposed …
