Viticulture research reports

A course run by the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, August 1995.

The purpose of this publication is to clarify the role fertilisers play in commercial table grape production and to detail methods of selecting fertilisers. This selection process however is not easy as there are over 600 registered fertilisers in Western Australia.

In deciding which is the best fertiliser for a particular property many factors have to be considered. These include:

* Age of vine

* Rootstock

* Variety of table grape

* Soil type

* Soil chemistry

* Irrigation methods

* Previous fertiliser history Previous yield, vigour and …

Response By Reticulitermes (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) And Cryptocercus Punctulatus (Blattaria: Cryptocercidae) To Wood Infected With The Green-Stain Ascomycete, Chlorociboria Aeruginascens Aeruginascens, Deborah Waller Jan 1995

Response By Reticulitermes (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) And Cryptocercus Punctulatus (Blattaria: Cryptocercidae) To Wood Infected With The Green-Stain Ascomycete, Chlorociboria Aeruginascens Aeruginascens, Deborah Waller

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Termites of the genus Reticulitermes Holmgren and the wood roaches Cryptocercus punctulatus Scutter were observed feeding on wood stained green by the ascomycete fungus, Chlorociboria aeruginascens aeruginascens (Leotiaceae), in a Virginia forest. However, in laboratory choice trials, both termites and wood roaches preferred unstained wood to stained wood. In no-choice feeding trials, Reticulitermes fed stained birch ate significantly less wood and weighed significantly less than termites fed unstained birch. These results indicate that natural host utilization patterns cannot be relied upon to indicate feeding preferences.

Regulating Factors Of Ovarian Development In Paper Wasps Of The Genus Polistes, Jean Mengelkoch Jan 1995

Regulating Factors Of Ovarian Development In Paper Wasps Of The Genus Polistes, Jean Mengelkoch

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Wasps of the genus Polistes were used to determine the effects of larval nutrition, position within the nest, and parasitism on ovarian development. Polistes nests were collected from Iowa, Minnesota, and Utah during the summer of 1994. The wasps were reared out, dissected, and their ovaries examined. The total number of oocytes and the size of the largest oocyte were used as measurements of ovarian development. Due to difficulties hand feeding the larvae, no data was obtained concerning the effect of larval nutrition on ovarian development. Data from first emergence nests of Minnesota were inconclusive. However, data from the second …

The Influence Of A Bamboo Diet On The Evolutionary Adaptations Of The Giant Panda, Beth A. Pettitt Jan 1995

The Influence Of A Bamboo Diet On The Evolutionary Adaptations Of The Giant Panda, Beth A. Pettitt

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) of China is, anatomically, a carnivore trying to get by on an herbivorous diet (Dolnick, 1989). While it is a member of the order Carnivora, ninety-nine percent of the panda's feedstuff is bamboo. The giant panda has survived on a bamboo diet for millions of years and throughout its history has evolved numerous adaptations for obtaining and processing this plant efficiently. Various characteristics of bamboo are considered, including: anatomy, strength, cyanogenic capabilities, reproductive cycle, nutrition and abundance. Following these characteristics, specific adaptations that appear to correspond with these properties of bamboo are examined. …

A Comparison Of Binge Eating Versus Dieting Onset In Bulimia Nervosa, Carrie Fenna Jan 1995

A Comparison Of Binge Eating Versus Dieting Onset In Bulimia Nervosa, Carrie Fenna

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

This study investigates the assumption that dietary restriction leads to the development of binge eating in culimia nervosa (BN). Bulimic women reporting an onset of binge eating prior to dieting (n=20) were compared to women reporting an onset of dieting prior to binge eating, using similar age subjects. Results suggest that onset of binge eating prior to dieting in BN is associated with earlier onset of binge eating, higher BMI, and improved response to cognitive-behavioral treatments at 6 month follow-up. The implications are that the widely held belief that dieting causes binge eating may not be relevant for a sub …

Growth Rate As A Function Of Food Consumption In Hatchling Sceloporus Virgatus (Sauria: Iguanidae), Geoffrey R. Smith

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

The potential for food availability and consumption to produce variation in growth rates among hatchling striped plateau lizards (Sceloporus virgatus) was studied under laboratory conditions. Growth rate and survivorship were positively linearly related to the amount of food consumed. Differences in food consumption and availability created large differences in body size by the end of the experiment.

Evidence Of The Establishment Of Cotesia Flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) In Continental Africa, C. O. Omwega, S. W. Kimani, W. A. Overholt, C. K.P.O. Ogol

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Cotesia flavipes Cameron has been released several times in Africa for biological control of gramineous stem borers. Establishment has been reported on the Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius, Réunion and Madagascar, however, several attempts to introduce C. flavipes into continental Africa are reported to have failed. Recently, several cocoon masses of C. flavipes were recovered from south-western Kenya where the parasitoid was never released. Identifications of the parasitoids from south-western Kenya were based on morphological characters, allozyme frequencies, and mating experiments with laboratory populations of C. flavipes. It is hypothesized that C. flavipes became established from individuals escaping from a …

Influence Of Zooplankton Grazing On Free Dissolved Enzymes In The Sea, Alexander B. Bochdansky, Staša Puškarić, Gerhard J. Herndl Jan 1995

Influence Of Zooplankton Grazing On Free Dissolved Enzymes In The Sea, Alexander B. Bochdansky, Staša Puškarić, Gerhard J. Herndl

OES Faculty Publications

In the Northern Adriatic Sea, extracellular enzymatic activity was measured during a Lagrangian study following a drifting buoy for 40 h. Dissolved free enzymatic activity represented 20 to 70% of total activity depending on the type of enzyme. alpha- and beta-glucosidases exhibited a significantly higher free activity than proteolytic enzymes. In subsequent laboratory experiments we investigated the effect of zooplankton on the free enzyme pool. The 4-step approach included: (1) determination of the enzymatic activities in copepods (mainly Acartia clausi); (2) enzymatic activity in fecal pellets; (3) short- and long-term grazing experiments; and (4) degradability of free glucosidase in seawater. …

Biosystematics Of The Cotesia Flavipes Complex (Hymenoptera: Braconidae): Interspecific Hybridization, Sex Pheromone And Mating Behaviour Studies, Susan W. Kimani, William A. Overholt

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Mating behaviour, sex pheromone attraction and reciprocal breeding of Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), C. sesamiae (Cameron) and C. chilonis (Matsumura) were studied. These three putative species comprise the Cotesia flavipes complex. Wing fanning and antennal vibration were the initial courtship signals from the males. Antennal stroking by the male was also an important contact signal and a prerequisite to successful mounting and copulation. Interspecific crosses revealed that males of C. flavipes exhibited courtship behaviour, and mounted and copulated with females of C. chilonis and C. sesamiae; the males transferred sperm but progeny from these crosses did not include females. …

New Applications Of The Nuclear Microprobe For Biological Samples, Jan Pallon, Klas Malmqvist

Scanning Microscopy

The continuing development of the Nuclear Microprobe (NMP) has opened up new fields of applications in biology and medicine. Quantitative multielemental analysis in small sections of samples can be performed routinely. The use of techniques such as scanning transmission ion microscopy makes imaging as well as mass normalization possible at submicron resolution. Recent medical applications include studies on thin cryosections prepared from autopsies and biopsies, as well as single cells grown directly on the backing foil used in the NMP analyses. The purpose of the single cell analysis is often pharmacological, e.g., testing of new drugs, their uptake and distribution. …

Factors Influencing The Oxidation Of Lipoproteins And Plasma Lipids, Yanshan Ma Dec 1994

Factors Influencing The Oxidation Of Lipoproteins And Plasma Lipids, Yanshan Ma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The hypothesis that antioxidant vitamins (ascorbate and tocopherols) along with urate protect blood plasma lipids from oxidation was tested. Dietary fat is also an important factor influencing plasma lipid peroxidation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of plasma antioxidants and dietary fat on low density lipoprotein (LDL) and plasma lipid oxidation. In the first part of this study, we compared the ability of urate and ascorbate to protect human LDL from in vitro oxidation. LDL oxidation was initiated by 15 mM of a water soluble azo-initiator in the presence or absence of ascorbate or urate. The …

Changes In Proteins Associated With Nitrogen Fixation And Iron Nutrition In The Marine Cyanobacterium Trichodesmium, Karen Marie Elardo Nov 1994

Changes In Proteins Associated With Nitrogen Fixation And Iron Nutrition In The Marine Cyanobacterium Trichodesmium, Karen Marie Elardo

Dissertations and Theses

This investigation tested the hypothesis that iron, as a micronutrient, will affect proteins in Trichodesmium and therefore affect nitrogen fixation. Changes in proteins that are a result of iron enrichment were compared to naturally occurring diel changes. Alterations in the iron protein of nitrogenase were compared to nitrogen fixation rates using the acetylene reduction technique. The observed changes in proteins were compared in Trichodesmium colonies from the Caribbean Sea and the Sargasso Sea.

Trichodesmium colonies were monitored for protein and iron content over a diel period on two cruises. The changes in protein and iron content in Trichodesmium colonies were …
