On The Structure Of The Pistils Of Some Grasses, Elda Rema Walker Jul 1906

On The Structure Of The Pistils Of Some Grasses, Elda Rema Walker

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The purpose of this investigation has been to determine to what extent there is evidence of a third carpel in the pistils of grasses. The study has been carried on, by means of cross and longitudinal sections, cut in different planes, as well as by a study of the external appearance of the pistils. The following are the results obtained:

Tribe Festuceae

Tribe Hordeae

Tribe Chlorideae

Tribe Aveneae

Tribe Agrostidcae

Tribe Phalarideae

Tribe Oryzeae

Tribe Paniceae

Tribe Andropogoneae

Tribe Maydeae

Embryology And Evolution, Malo Marius Amunson Jun 1906

Embryology And Evolution, Malo Marius Amunson

Manuscript Thesis Collection

The proofs of evolution must be sought in the entire field of science. Direct proof is found in the study of Morphology, whose bases are comparative anatomy; embryology; in the study of paleontology, of geology, of geographical distribution, in the study of nature and experiments of today. In this vast field of direct proofs of evolution it is our purpose to present some of the evidences of evolution as furnished by one of these, namely, Comparative Embryology.

On The Movements Of Petals, Esther Pearl Hensel Jul 1905

On The Movements Of Petals, Esther Pearl Hensel

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The following paper has to do with an investigation of the physical causes· which bring about opening and closing movements, periodic or otherwise, of certain flowers. With that end in view, seven different species of flowering plants have been experimented upon directly, a much larger number being simply observed with respect to the nature, time, etc., of their anthotropic movements. Movement consists in the corolla taking upon itself either the open or closed position for certain periods of the day or night; for example, the morning glory (Ipomoea purpurea) opens early in the morning (from 4:00 to 5 …

Bulletin No. 85 - Pear-Blight, W. N. Hutt

UAES Bulletins

This bulletin makes no claim to originality of method. It is simply a brief resume of the history and nature of pear-blight, together with the treatment of the disease that we have found to be most successful, during the last two years, at this Experiment Station. The bulletin is published in reply to numerous letters from many parts of the State asking for information regarding the blight of the pear trees, and methods of controlling it.

The Plant-Geography Of Germany, Roscoe Pound Jun 1896

The Plant-Geography Of Germany, Roscoe Pound

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

In a recently published address Dr. Coulter speaks of a new movement in botany which is sending botanists " to the great laboratory of nature," and replacing collecting trips by biological surveys. "The old-fashioned collection of plants," he says, "will hold no more relation to the new field work than the old geology, with its scattered collection of fossils, holds to the topographic geology of to-day." Geographical botany as it is now understood is comparatively a recent development. Collectors and cataloguers for a long time have been gathering a portion of the bare facts upon which geographical botany must proceed, …
