A Study Of Bleach Effluents From Oxidative Extraction, Thomas R. Slusarczyk Apr 1990

A Study Of Bleach Effluents From Oxidative Extraction, Thomas R. Slusarczyk

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

During the 1970's oxygen delignification was primarily undertaken before the bleaching stages in a pulp mill. However, towards the end of the 1970's further research was done to promote the use of oxygen as a decoloring agent within the bleaching stages. This was warranted because oxygen delignification was known to promote decreased chemical consumption, mainly chlorine. The process that was developed came to be known as oxidative extraction. This process has become very popular due to the fact that it is easier to install and operate than the conventional oxygen delignification system. Some other advantages that this process offers are …

Adsorption Of The Herbicides Diuron, Terbacil, And Simazine To Blueberry Mulches, Laurie Hodges, Ronald E. Talbert Apr 1990

Adsorption Of The Herbicides Diuron, Terbacil, And Simazine To Blueberry Mulches, Laurie Hodges, Ronald E. Talbert

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Samples of soil, mulch, and the soil/mulch interface zone were collected from commercial highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) fields typical in their use of mulch under Arkansas conditions. Mulches included J-year-old hardwood sawdust, 5-year-old hardwood sawdust, and 1-year-old pine needle mulch. Herbicide adsorption (Kd values) of the samples was determined for diuron, terbacil, and simazine. The soils, mulches, and interfaces adsorbed nearly 10 times as much diuron and more than twice as much simazine as terbacil. Adsorption of the herbicides was three to five times greater to the mulches than to the soils. Adsorption was significantly correlated with the …

Studies Of Epithelial Electrolyte Transport By Marker Ions, A. Dörge, R. Rick Mar 1990

Studies Of Epithelial Electrolyte Transport By Marker Ions, A. Dörge, R. Rick

Scanning Microscopy

The paper reviews several recent studies in which marker ions, such as Rb and Br, were used to identify ion transport pathways and membrane properties in epithelia. In the frog skin epithelium, using Rb as a substitute for K, Cl transport mechanisms across the basolateral membranes of principal cells were studied. The data suggest that intracellular Cl is maintained above electrochemical equilibrium by an Na-K-2Cl cotransport system which, under non-stimulated conditions, is normally quiescent.

In toad and frog skins, the route of transepithelial Cl movement was investigated. A subpopulation of mitochondria-rich cells demonstrated a ready exchange of Br with the …

A Comparison Of Three Low Temperature Techniques Of Specimen Preparation For X-Ray Microanalysis, R. J. Condron, A. T. Marshall Mar 1990

A Comparison Of Three Low Temperature Techniques Of Specimen Preparation For X-Ray Microanalysis, R. J. Condron, A. T. Marshall

Scanning Microscopy

A quantitative x-ray microanalytical comparison of intracellular ion concentrations in two tissues (chicken kidney and duck nasal salt gland), prepared as bulk frozen-hydrated, embedded freeze-dried and freeze-substituted samples, shows that there are similar losses of K+ and Pin freeze-dried and freeze-substituted samples in both types of tissue. It is suggested that this may be due to extraction by chloride-free Spurr's resin during infiltration. There was also an indication of an increase in Na+ concentration in freeze-dried samples.

In chicken kidney cells there was a reduction in Mg++ and Ca++ concentrations in freeze-dried and freeze-substituted samples and …

The Effect Of Plant Growth Regulators On The Growth Of Closterium Moniliferum, Cynthia Lehua Warnock Christensen Mar 1990

The Effect Of Plant Growth Regulators On The Growth Of Closterium Moniliferum, Cynthia Lehua Warnock Christensen

Dissertations and Theses

Physiologic responses to Gibberellic Acid (GA), 1-Naphthalene Acetic Acid (NAA), Benzylaminopurine (BAP), and Abscisic Acid (ABA), suggest that Closterium moniliferum has the ability to utilize these plant growth factors. The growth promoters NAA and GA both increased growth when added to the media. The cell division regulator BAP (a synthetic cytokinin). also had a promotive effect on growth. Abscisic acid was found to be inhibitive to growth.

N-Ethylmaleimide-Sensitive Protein(S) Involved In Cortical Exocytosis In The Sea-Urchin Egg - Localization To Both Cortical Vesicles And Plasma-Membrane, Robert C. Jackson, Paul A. Modern Mar 1990

N-Ethylmaleimide-Sensitive Protein(S) Involved In Cortical Exocytosis In The Sea-Urchin Egg - Localization To Both Cortical Vesicles And Plasma-Membrane, Robert C. Jackson, Paul A. Modern

Dartmouth Scholarship

The exocytotic release of secretory products from fragments of sea urchin egg cortex has been shown to be inhibited by covalent modification of membrane sulfhydryl groups with N-ethylmaleimide (NEM). Exocytotically competent preparations of reconstituted cortex, formed by recombination of purified cortical vesicles (CVs) with fragments of egg plasma membrane (PM) were also inhibited by treatment with NEM. The cellular localization of sulfhydryl-containing constituent(s) responsible for inhibition was investigated by treating CVs and/or PM with NEM prior to reconstitution. Both native cortex and cortex reconstituted with NEM-treated components were challenged with calcium-containing buffers. Exocytosis was monitored by phase-contrast microscopy, and quantitated …

Denker Rhinotomy For Inverted Papilloma Of The Nose And Paranasal Sinuses, Samuel A. Mickelson, Richard D. Nichols Mar 1990

Denker Rhinotomy For Inverted Papilloma Of The Nose And Paranasal Sinuses, Samuel A. Mickelson, Richard D. Nichols

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Inverted papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses is an unusual benign neoplasm that has the propensity for local tissue destruction and an association with malignant degeneration. The tumor represents an inverted growth of epithelium rather than outward proliferation. It most commonly arises from the lateral nasal wall with growth into the nose and paranasal sinuses and only rarely originates from the septum. Presenting symptoms are usually unilateral nasal obstruction and clear rhinorrhea. Surgical excision is the recommended treatment though the aggressiveness ofthe approach has varied. Transnasal local excision has been associated with a high recurrence rate. Lateral rhinotomy with …

Management Of Chronic Staphylococcal Osteomyelitis Of The Temporal Bone: The Use Of Hyperbaric Oxygen, Vanessa G. Schweitzer

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) is an effective adjunct in the management of selected otolaryngologic problems including radiation-induced necrosis of the temporal hone, malignant external otitis, mandibular osteoradionecrosis and refractory osteomyelitis, soft tissue head and neck necrotizing fasciitis, compromised skin flaps and grafts, acute air or gas embolism, and otologic barotrauma. We describe the management of a patient with insidious Staphylococcus aureus osteomyelitis of the temporal bone by the use of HBO preoperatively and postoperatively in conjunction with surgical debridement. The possible application of angiogenic agents and tetracycline hone-labeling in combination with HBO therapy in the management of refractory neurotologic disease is …

Entry Of The Hearing Impaired Into The Health Care System, Kathleen Yaremchuk, Jonathan Schmidt, Linda Dickson Mar 1990

Entry Of The Hearing Impaired Into The Health Care System, Kathleen Yaremchuk, Jonathan Schmidt, Linda Dickson

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The current system of referral of patients complaining of hearing loss usually requires a dual appointment with otolaryngology and audiology. Most of these patients have sensorineural hearing loss for which there is rarely surgical or medical treatment. This study tests the hypothesis that these patients would receive appropriate treatment and that health care dollars would be saved if an audiological assessment could identify those patients who require medical or surgical care. One hundred consecutive patients whose sole complaint was hearing loss were evaluated using audiograms and "hearing abilities questionnaires" by five audiologists using subjective and objective criteria to determine the …

Systemic Dissemination Of Pneumocystis Carinii In A Patient With Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, Mahul B. Amin, Michael P. Abrash, Eugene Mezger, Gary F. Sekerak

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Pneumocystis carinii is usually considered a respiratory tract pathogen; however, there are reported cases of limited and generalized dissemination of the organism from the lungs of immunocompromised patients. We present the autopsy findings of a 29-year-old male with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and recurrent Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia who developed abnormal liver function tests. The patient had received aerosolized pentamidine because of toxic reactions to other modes of therapy. The postmortem examination revealed Pneumocystis in the lungs, liver, spleen, kidney, myocardium, thymus, pancreas, thyroid gland, bilateral parathyroid and adrenal glands, gastrointestinal mucosa, perihilar and mesenteric lymph nodes, and bone marrow. A …

Infant Hearing Screening 1984 To 1989: The Henry Ford Hospital Experience, Gary P. Jacobson, Mary Jo Burtka, Jeanne A. Wharton, Craig W. Newman, Neil Shepherd, Robert G. Turner Mar 1990

Infant Hearing Screening 1984 To 1989: The Henry Ford Hospital Experience, Gary P. Jacobson, Mary Jo Burtka, Jeanne A. Wharton, Craig W. Newman, Neil Shepherd, Robert G. Turner

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

From 1984 to 1989 the Infant Hearing Screening (IHS) program at Henry Ford Hospital identified 1,300 infants as being "at risk" for hearing loss. The prevalence of significant sensorineural hearing loss in this sample was 1.4%. Additionally, 80 infants who passed the IHS program and reached 3 years of age were found to have normal hearing sensitivity by conventional audiometric techniques (ie, no false-negative predictions). There were three false-positive predictions. It was discovered that infants of low birthweight (ie, < 1,500 g) were three times more likely to fail IHS than those whose weight exceeded 1,500 g. A higher return rate was found for infants failing an initial hearing screening conducted in the neonatal intensive care unit in comparison to those screened as outpatients one week postdischarge. The sensitivity and specificity of behavioral observation audiometry were 43% and 92%, respectively, when brainstem auditory-evoked potentials was used as the criterion validity measure.

Hay Additive Review: "Where We've Been, Where We're Going", William C. Mahanna, Steve Soderlund

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

The losses from harvest to feed bunk are undoubtedly greater with hay than any other crop grown by the American farmer. The economic implications of reducing losses through improved harvest technologies is staggering when one considers the 75-85 million tons of alfalfa harvested out of the total 140-145 million tons of hay produced annually in the United States.

Benzo(A)Pyrene Ingested From Composite Meals : Analysis And Method Development Related To Total Human Exposure, Che-Han Hsu Jan 1990

Benzo(A)Pyrene Ingested From Composite Meals : Analysis And Method Development Related To Total Human Exposure, Che-Han Hsu

Theses

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) have been known for many years to be environmental carcinogen. Moreover, B(a)P has often been used as an indi¬cator for the carcinogenic potency of environmental matter. One of its exposure pathways, ingestion, may possibly be more important than other routes, conventionally studied such as inhalation. The purposes of this thesis are 1) to analyze the B(a)P concentrations in weekly composite and some daily meals obtained in the Total Human Exposure to Environmental Substances (THEES) study, 2) to develop techniques which can measure the levels of B(a)P in foods accurately and effici¬ently, 3) to compare …

Degradation Of Refractory Organic Pollutants In Tar, Water And Soil Matrices By Ozone Or Hydrogen Peroxide With Ultraviolet Light, Liang-Jiun Uang Jan 1990

Degradation Of Refractory Organic Pollutants In Tar, Water And Soil Matrices By Ozone Or Hydrogen Peroxide With Ultraviolet Light, Liang-Jiun Uang

Theses

The objective of this research is to develop a method to degrade refractory Tar materials, higher molecular weight 3-5 ring Poly Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH's) or degrading these highly refractory PAH structures so that they are amenable to further treatment by biological or chemical methods. The process utilized to achieve this is to treat contaminated soils or tar materials with hydrogen peroxide or ozone plus ultraviolet light. Analysis of 27 specific PAH's was done by gas chromatograph (Flame Ionization Detection) for the reactants and products. The contaminated soil showed significantly lower levels of these PAH's after treatment.

Particle Induced X-Ray Emission Elemental Analysis: Sample Preparation For A Versatile Instrumental Method, N. F. Mangelson, M. W. Hill

Scanning Microscopy

Particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) has found extensive application as a multi-element analysis tool. The energetic nature of both the incident particle beam and the emitted characteristic X-rays has lead to considerable versatility in regard to samples which may be analyzed by the PIXE technique. This paper does not deal with the theory, equipment, or data analysis for PIXE, but it should bring to the reader a broad perspective of methods for sample preparation and should point the way into the literature where more complete details are given. Both physical and chemical processes for sample preparation are outlined. Preparation often …

Surface Corrections To Bulk Energy Losses In Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy Of Spheres, A. Rivacoba, P. M. Echenique Jan 1990

Surface Corrections To Bulk Energy Losses In Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy Of Spheres, A. Rivacoba, P. M. Echenique

Scanning Microscopy

The interaction of a fast electron penetrating a spherical target is studied, in the frame of the classical dielectric theory. Expressions for ω the Fourier component of the induced scalar field and energy loss probability are obtained. The reduction in the bulk loss probability due to the surface boundary correction is calculated to all orders in a multipole expansion. The dependence of this correction on the impact parameter and on the radius of the sphere is also studied and compared with the results for films.

Dominance Relationships Of Cycloheximide-Resistant Mutants Of Schizophyllum Commune Fr., Marjorie Meier Eerdmans, Sally A. Amundson, Todd A. Reinhart, Keith K. Klein

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

We have isolated several mutants of Schizophyllum commune Fr. able to grow on media containing cycloheximide in concentrations up to 30 mg/L. Genetic analyses of the resistant phenotypes show them to be due to the action of a single gene located on the first linkage group between the A-mating type factor and a gene for an adenine requirement (ade-ll). We have analyzed the growth and development of dikaryons made homoallelic for either the resistant or sensitive alleles as well as the heteroallelic dikaryon. These dikaryons showed different abilities to fruit when placed on media containing various concentrations of cycloheximide. Homoallelic …

Murphy's Law And The Uncertainty Of Electron Probes, Linn W. Hobbs Jan 1990

Murphy's Law And The Uncertainty Of Electron Probes, Linn W. Hobbs

Scanning Microscopy

The electron microscope has brought over the last fifty years a wealth of information about the structure of solids, from surface topography to the details of atomic arrangements. Like any probe, however, the electron beam is subject to the epistomological constraint that the investigator inevitably perturbs what is being investigated, and from its beginnings questions were raised about the integrity of the ·images generated in the microscope from a specimen which was subjected to such an aggressive probe. A fast electron is about as likely to be scattered inelastically as elastically from a collection of atoms, and the density of …

Alternatives To And Reduction Of Animal Use In Biomedical Research, Education And Testing, John M. Frazier, Alan M. Goldberg

Experimentation Collection

Biomedical endeavours can be divided into three major categories: research, education, and testing. Within the context of each of these categories, activities involving whole animals have made major contributions and will continue to do so in the future. However, with technological developments in the areas of biotechnology and computers, new methods are already reducing the use of whole animals in certain areas. This article discusses the general tissues of alternatives and then focuses on the development of new approaches to toxicity testing.

Morphological Stasis Abd Molecular Divergence In The Intercontinental Disjunct Genus Datisca (Datiscaceae), Aaron Liston, Loren H. Rieseberg, Thomas S. Elias Jan 1990

Morphological Stasis Abd Molecular Divergence In The Intercontinental Disjunct Genus Datisca (Datiscaceae), Aaron Liston, Loren H. Rieseberg, Thomas S. Elias

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

The genus Datisca comprises two species and has an intercontinentally disjunct distribution: D. cannabina is native to southwest and central Asia, whereas D. glomerata is distributed from northern California to northern Baja California. In 1975, Axelrod proposed a geohistorical scenario to account for such "Madrean-Tethyan links," suggesting that these disjunctions resulted from migration across the mid-Atlantic from the Paleogene up to the Neogene, approximately 23 to 65 m.y.a. The two species are quite similar in most phenotypic traits which have been studied to date. The major difference between the two involves their breeding system: D. cannabina is dioecious while D. …
