The Decision-Makers: The Power Structure Of Dallas, Carol Estes Thometz

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

In every community there are persons who "run" things, who make decisions and take action in the citizens' behalf. Who are they? How do they operate? Who spots the problems and decides which will be faced and which ignored? Who diagnoses and prescribes a solution? Elected officials? The bosses of business? of labor? Individuals or groups? Organizations or private cliques? And by what open or hidden processes are decisions reached?

The Development Of Irrigation In Nebraska, 1854–1910: A Descriptive Survey, Martin Evald Carlson May 1963

The Development Of Irrigation In Nebraska, 1854–1910: A Descriptive Survey, Martin Evald Carlson

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Preface (excerpted)

The primary purpose of this study is tto trace the development of irrigation in Nebraska from the organization of the state as a territory in 1854 through the rest of the nineteenth century. This period covers the first four stages through which irrigation progressed: individualistic, corporate, district, and state. A brief discussion of the North Platte Project is included, however, in order to carry the story into the fifth and final stage--the development of irrigation with Federal aid, as provided for in the Reclamation Act of 1902.

The emphasis of this work is on the irrigation movement and …

The Influence Of Salinity On The Growth And Reproduction Of Marsh Plants, D. K. Kaushik

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The water resources of the State of Utah are rapidly being developed for agriculture and industry. They are so extensively exploited that their continued and additional use must be justified on the basis of need and efficiency of utilization. To determine more accurately the quantity and quality of water needed to operate a marsh, a project was undertaken by the Utah Department of Fish and Game, the Engineering Experiment Station and the Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit at Utah State University. The study was divided into the two phases, one on quantity and one on quality of water. The present report …

The Effects Of Cooking Temperature And Stage Of Doneness On Some Factors In Broiled Beef, Carmencita Salvosa May 1963

The Effects Of Cooking Temperature And Stage Of Doneness On Some Factors In Broiled Beef, Carmencita Salvosa

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Broiling is cooking tender cuts of meat by radiant heat from hot coals, a gas flame, or an electric element. Steaks and chops for broiling are from 1 to 2 inches thick.

Broiling as a method of cooking mat is not new, but the directions for the process are the result of individual trial and error testing and are often in conflict. Current interest in indoor and outdoor broiling, particularly in Western United States, emphasizes the need for better information. There is no measuring device for surface heat during broiling and thus little research on the relationship of surface temperature, …

Fisheries Report Ii (2) - Preliminary Report On The Effectiveness Of Escape-Gaps In Crayfish-Pots, B. K. Bowen

Fisheries Research Reports

The Western Australian commercial crayfish, Panulinrus cy,nus George, (1962)", is caught in depths ranging from a few feet to approximately 45 fathoms. In the shallow waters large numbers of crayfish measuring, less than the legal minimum length are brought to the surface in the standard commercial crayfish pots. The law requires that these undersize crayfish be returned to the sea, but there is always the temptation to retain them for illegal sale. In addition, the undersize crayfish which are returned to the sea are often damaged by handling. The probability is that their mortality rate is higher than those which …

Progress In The Control Of Cotton Fireweed, Geoffrey A. Pearce

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Cotton Fireweed (Erechtites quadridentata) is native to Western Australia and was first collected by Drummond before 1850. In its natural habitat it is quite insignificant and passes unnoticed.

Cotton fireweed, a native perennial plant, has become a serious weed in the south coastal districts and is now one of the most widespread weeds in the State.

Swing Fence Flood Crossing For Creeks In The Kimberleys, A L. Payne Jan 1963

Swing Fence Flood Crossing For Creeks In The Kimberleys, A L. Payne

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FENCING is the basis of the regeneration programme on the eroded Ord River catchment area, and the fences constructed must cross numerous creeks.

But heavy downpours of short duration characterise the wet season experienced in this area.

Because the rain falls on to bare, compacted ground, run-off is intense and gullies and creeks rise rapidly, causing serious damage to conventional fences and flood gates across watercourses.

Filler Distribution As Effected By Drainage Rate And Volume, James Joseph Beer Jan 1963

Filler Distribution As Effected By Drainage Rate And Volume, James Joseph Beer

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Much work has been going on in the development of increased retention of titanium dioxide. This thesis will investigate retention of titanium dioxide and drainage rates on the distribution of titanium dioxide.

The retention of titanium dioxide will be understood a little better if conditions having known effects on retention are stated. Literature states that retention of fillers increases with increased basis weight, (2) increased beating of the pulp, (1) with increased alum to a limit, (1) and decreases with interrelated machine conditions such as increased speed, vacuum in the suction boxes, and length of wire and shake. Study Of Proteinuria: Isolation Of Proteins From The Nephrotic Syndrome, Merrill C. Raikes Jan 1963

Study Of Proteinuria: Isolation Of Proteins From The Nephrotic Syndrome, Merrill C. Raikes

Senior Scholar Papers

One of the most puzzling phenomena of abnormal renal physiology is the occurrence of the nephrotic syndrome. The syndrome has been defined by a collection of clinical and pathological symptoms, but there is no correlation between the clinical and pathological symptoms nor is the etiology of the syndrome known. Proteinuria is probably the most distinguishing feature in the nephrotic syndrome, and there are two possible explanations for its occurrence: (1) the excessive amounts of protein found in nephrotic urine could be due to an increased basement membrane permeability in the glomerulus of the kidney or (2) dysproteinemia. An attempt has …

(R.) reticulata, and Cyta latirostris, and eighteen new species: Bdellodes (Bdellodes) harpax, B. (B.) oraria, …

A Study Of Ionic Permeability Changes Underlying Excitation In Myelinated Nerve Fibers Of The Frog, Frederick Arthur Dodge Jan 1963

A Study Of Ionic Permeability Changes Underlying Excitation In Myelinated Nerve Fibers Of The Frog, Frederick Arthur Dodge

Student Theses and Dissertations

Investigations by Huxley and Stämpfli of the dependence of the resting potential and of the action potential at the node of Ranvier upon the ionic composition of the bathing medium provided evidence that the electrical activity resulted from a sequential alteration of the membrane permeability to sodium and to potassium ions. Their results suggested that the nodal membrane conformed in a general way to the ionic hypothesis developed in detail for the squid axon by Hodgkin and Huxley. This dissertation reports an investigation of the electrical characteristics of the nodal membrane aimed at developing a quantitative formulation of the ionic …

Hints On Irrigating Citrus With Saline Water, Stanley Thomas Smith Jan 1963

Hints On Irrigating Citrus With Saline Water, Stanley Thomas Smith

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

IN the past few years a number of citrus orchards near Perth have shown signs of damage caused by excess "salt" (chloride) uptake. All have been irrigated either from the Canning River or from private bores or dams.

Senior Soil Research Officer S. T. Smith describes glasshouse experiments which have given some useful guides to minimising "salt" damage in citrus trees irrigated with low-quality water.

The F.A.Q. Standard For 1962-63, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE term f.a.q. refers to "fair average quality" as a standard for the sale of wheat -*- produced in Western Australia during any particular season.

The practice of using this standard developed after a standard sample of wheat grown in 1904 was obtained and declared to have a bushel weight of 62 lb.

A Progress Report On Commercial Cotton Growing On The Ord River Project, William John Toms Jan 1963

A Progress Report On Commercial Cotton Growing On The Ord River Project, William John Toms

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The recommendations given in this article have been built up from the experience of the author in growing 200 acres of cotton in the Ord River area during the 1962-63 season for the Department of Agriculture, from findings made by Kimberley Research Station, and from discussions with the present farmers in the area.

When a new form of agriculture is introduced into a new area techniques and ideas change rapidly as farmers become acquainted with their new environment and the new crops. The recommendations will therefore require constant revision.
