Second Bibliography And Index For The Philosophy Of Geology, Claude C. Albritton Jr. Aug 1964

Second Bibliography And Index For The Philosophy Of Geology, Claude C. Albritton Jr.

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

The body of writings on the philosophy and history of geology has grown in a remarkable way since the end of the Second World War. There is no obvious explanation for this quickening of interest in what are surely the most academic aspects of a science best known for its practical applications. Influences arising both from within and from outside the geological profession have probably been responsible. It is a matter of record that many departments of geology, upon resuming full-time operations after the war, decided not to go on moving in the old curricular ruts. The new courses, even …

A Study Of The Effect Of Varying Serum Phenylalanine Levels On Changes In Intelligence Quotient, Darlene Imai Manullang Jun 1964

A Study Of The Effect Of Varying Serum Phenylalanine Levels On Changes In Intelligence Quotient, Darlene Imai Manullang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Data from thirty medical records of phenylketonuric children under treatment were investigated to determine at which serum phenylalanine level (0-3.9 mg. %, 4-7.9 mg %, 8-11.9 mg. %, greater than 12 mg. %) there would be the greatest increase in intelligence. The children involved in the study were divided into the following groups according to the age dietary treatment was initiated: 0 through 5 months, 6 through 11 months, 12 through 23 months, and over 2 years of age.

Among 6 patients who were placed on the diet during the first 5 months of life, it appears that the optimal …

Demand For Household Water In Northern Utah, 1962, Seth H. Schick May 1964

Demand For Household Water In Northern Utah, 1962, Seth H. Schick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water is not a single use resource. It can be used for completely unrelated purposes. There are four general uses for water: household, industrial, agricultural, and recreational. Since water is an economic good it must be properly allocated among the four uses to maximize the returns to society. Also, There must be proper allocation among competing units within each major use.

Cost Of Reclaiming Pinyon-Juniper Rangeland And Its Effect On Cattle Ranch Income, John William Adams May 1964

Cost Of Reclaiming Pinyon-Juniper Rangeland And Its Effect On Cattle Ranch Income, John William Adams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

There was a period during the early history of Utah when grasses in some areas grew so tall that it hid grazing cattle and sheep from view. However, mismanagement caused this to change and depleted grassland was invaded by noxious weeds, sagebrush, and pinyon-juniper. This deterioration of choice grassland to less desirable range cover was aided by the attitude of stockmen that pasture was available on a first come first serve basis. As a result of such an attitude and the unsatisfactory condition of ranges, the era of free, uncontrolled use of grazing lands came to a close with the …

Some Functions In The Theory Of Neutron Logging, L. S. Allen, C. W. Tittle

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

The solution to the one-energy-group diffusion equation for the case of a point neutron source on the axis of two concentric cylindrical media has been programmed for a digital computer. Numerical results for a wide range of values of diffusion length and diffusion coefficient for the outer medium, and for four radii of the inner cylinder are presented. The outer radius in all cases is effectively infinite.

Depletion Of Subsoil Moisture By Apple Trees And Other Woody Species, C. C. Wiggans Apr 1964

Depletion Of Subsoil Moisture By Apple Trees And Other Woody Species, C. C. Wiggans

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

This project began in 1934 and ended in 1955. The work of Kiesselbach, Russel and Anderson indicated that depleted subsoil moisture might be the reason for the loss of many orchards and the injurious effects noted on native woody forest species. Most of the work in apple orchards was done at the University Fruit Farm at Union, Nebraska. Samples were also secured from commercial plantings of apples and other woody species in areas ranging from Rulo, near the Kansas-Nebraska border, to Florence, just north of Omaha, to Lincoln and several points in central Nebraska.

The Egghead: Past, Present And Future, Carlton B. Chapman Apr 1964

The Egghead: Past, Present And Future, Carlton B. Chapman

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

I hold true scholarship to be the most worthwhile and honorable of callings. It not only provides the scholar with the tools he needs for tangible accomplishment, but also, if pursued properly and in depth, engenders a sort of humility and personal awareness that make for generous and just appraisal of one's fellow men and of oneself. I dare say most of you share this view in some measure but if you believe that such a view is the prevailing American estimate, I think you deceive yourselves. There are numerous indications that in the majority American opinion, scholarship in depth …

Favorite Sons: Obsolete Presidential Candidates, James W. Davis Jan 1964

Favorite Sons: Obsolete Presidential Candidates, James W. Davis

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

With the 1964 national nominating conventions slightly more than a year away, nationwide political attention will once again be focused upon the presidential sweepstakes race. Inasmuch as the party controlling the presidency, the "in-party," almost never discards an incumbent, the president is virtually assured renomination by the Democrats; consequently politicians in both parties and the American voters will be concerned chiefly with the selection of the Republican candidate.

At this juncture it is impossible, of course, to predict flatly how many of the leading Republican contenders will openly toss their hats in the ring. But it is safe to assert …

Henry George In England, Milton A. Ochsner Jan 1964

Henry George In England, Milton A. Ochsner

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The forward rush of the Industrial Revolution had already by the tum of the 19th century silenced the hand looms in England and sent their operators to the city and its factories. Once there, the masses and their government fell prey to all the problems attendant to rapid and disorderly industrialization of which high rent, periodic unemployment, and labor unrest were just a few. The fundamental homogeneous outlook which the British had always somehow maintained in the face of other crises was now threatened anew. This was a new misery that gripped the land. It struck hardest at those who …

Fisheries Report No I (1) - The Shark Bay Fishery On Snapper Chrysophrys Unicolor (Quoy And Gaimard), B. K. Bowen

Fisheries Research Reports

As regards both catch and value, the Shark Bay snapper fishery is the second most important scale fishery in Western Australia. Until 195%, the fishing was done solely by means of hard-lines operated from beats drifting over the snapper patches. In 1959 traps were first used with great success and in 196) this method of fishing was again the principal technique.

Prior to the 1960 season there were several suggestions that the use of traps would have a deleterious effect on the fishery. On October 19, 1959, the Western Australian League of the Professional Fishermen's Association wrote to the Fisheries …

Put Garden Rubbish To Work In A Compost Heap, W Dawson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THERE'S a surprising amount of mumbo jumbo written about the simple compost heap. By the time you've waded through all the instructions, you feel as if you ought to have prerequisites of a doctorate in soil chemistry or an unbroken ancestry of at least three generations of professional English gardeners.

Set Stocking Has A Place In Soil Conservation Farming, J E. Watson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Set stocking of sheep at increased stocking rates is rapidly becoming popular with farmers in the agricultural areas of Western Australia.

But will set stocking increase soil erosion hazards? It should do just the reverse, according to Soil Conservation Adviser J. E. Watson, B.Sc, who claims that set stocking has a place in soil conservation farming.
