Scientific Discoveries Concerned With Pathogenic Micro-Organisms, Matilda Mary Steinbrecher
Scientific Discoveries Concerned With Pathogenic Micro-Organisms, Matilda Mary Steinbrecher
Bachelors’ Theses
Stand where you choose some calm night and look up into the great dome of the sky. Realize that those countless stars, once believed to regulate our destinies, have been proven by science to be other worlds more or less like ours. Let your thoughts wander on to objects near at hand. You see the rocks and soil and plants as did mankind for ages back; but where they not so long back saw nought else, you see rocks breaking into fertile soil and realize that minute living beings are responsible. You have come to understand that all the nitrogen …

Loss Of Minerals In Cooking Vegetables, Sadie O. Morris
Loss Of Minerals In Cooking Vegetables, Sadie O. Morris
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It has long been recognized that vegetables contain certain necessary substances which are essential to the human diet. Considerable attention has been given the different foods as to their economic value to human nutrition, however the information concerning the preparation of foods as to their nutritive losses is as yet inadequate. Considerable research work has been done in certain directions and some valuable data accumulated as to the economic losses contained in the waste or discarded portions of the food material. Several investigators have rather accurately determined not only the economic, but also the nutritive losses, especially those which occur …
The Hemotoxins Of Intestinal Parasites: A Critical Summary With Notes Of Some Cases, Joseph Mellick Leidy Ii
The Hemotoxins Of Intestinal Parasites: A Critical Summary With Notes Of Some Cases, Joseph Mellick Leidy Ii
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
The mechanical and reflex disturbances produced by animal parasites in the intestinal canal and other organs of the body have long been recognized by pathologists and clinicians. The researches of economic parasitologists and the occasional reports by clinical observers indicate the presence of other factors deserving of further investigation. That certain parasitic worms secrete substances that effect the blood of their hosts deleteriously has been shown conclusively by the researches of Tallqvist, Schwartz, Schaumann and others. The broad tapeworm of man which is known to produce severe anaemia contains a hemolytic agent according to the experiments and researches of Schaumann …

Ice Cream Ingredients, H. P. Davis, B. Masurovsky, J. A. Luithly
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
Ice cream is truly a frozen dairy product although other products than cream may enter into its make-up. The different ingredients that go into the ice cream mix exist in different qualities, grades, concentrations, and forms and it is desirable, therefore, for the ice cream maker to know something of them if a successful product is to be made.
Bulletin 118 - Pigs And Pig Raising, P. G. Hampshire
Bulletin 118 - Pigs And Pig Raising, P. G. Hampshire
Bulletins 1 - 2999
The importance of the development of pig-raising as one of the primary industries of Western Australia cannot be too greatly stressed.
In Western Australia we have a deficiency in production of bacon and hams equal nearly £200.00 per annum. When this exceedingly profitable market has been satisfied, export markets are geographically very favourable to Western Australia pig raisers as compared to the rest of Australia.

Bulletins 1 - 2999
Mildew attacks all the cereals as well as many grasses. but as in black stem rust the fungus has developed specialised races, one attacking wheat, another barley, another rye and so on, so that the form attacking wheat will not attack oats, etc
The Abortion Problem In Farm Live Stock, L. Van Es
The Abortion Problem In Farm Live Stock, L. Van Es
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
This casting out of a dead or at least abnormal fetus we call abortion. It constitutes the culminating accident in a process set into motion by disease or injury. To the breeder it is its most conspicuous feature, and it's more or less constant occurrence among live stock warrants us to speak of the abortion problem. It is the purpose of this publication to lay before our Nebraska breeders such information on the subject as can be gathered from the more recent literature and from observations in the field and the laboratory.

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
A biographical overview of American parasitologist Joseph Leidy and his work. bron September 9, 1823, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - died 1891.
Conclusion
A detailed study of his writing justifies the statement that no one has yet adequately presented or fully elucidated Leidy's contributions to helminthology and his writing will furnish rich lead to many future workers in this field. How monumental the task of preparing a record of the full life work of this extraordinary man who in the same breath as it were, in a single letter records discoveries of far reaching import on bacteria, amoebae, worms, and fossil …

Effect Of Root-Rot Upon Sugar-Beet Seed Production, Louis F. Nuffer
Effect Of Root-Rot Upon Sugar-Beet Seed Production, Louis F. Nuffer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Due to considerable loss through root-rot of mother beets while in storage during the winter of 1918-1919 the Amalgamated Sugar Company asked advice in regard to planting beets which had decay lesions on them. Would the beets yield seed if planted? How much seed would these beets yield as compared with healthy beets? Would the seed produced be injured by having been grown on decayed beets? It was felt that an experiment carried out with the above questions in view would bring out many facts upon which to base conclusions in answering the questions of the Sugar Company.

A Study Of The Flowering And Fruiting Habits Of The Delicious Apple, Emery R. Ranker
A Study Of The Flowering And Fruiting Habits Of The Delicious Apple, Emery R. Ranker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
One of the most disagreeable and at the same time the most unprofitable features of commercial apple production is the tendency of most apple varieties to "take a rest" every other year in order to regain the strength given to the production of a very heavy crop the previous year, and thus be able to repeat the process of heavy production the following year. This process is referred to as "off-year" or alternate bearing. Various causal relationships have been suggested , from time to time, by the different workers in the field but the suggestion now most generally accepted, and …
The Common Intestinal Roundworm Of Swine, H. M. Martin
The Common Intestinal Roundworm Of Swine, H. M. Martin
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The large intestinal roundworm of pigs is a very common parasite, and is probably present in every hog raising district of Nebraska. Up until the last few years the true nature of this parasite was unknown. Little did we realize the actual harm done by this worm; but through the scientific investigations of Stewart, Ransom, and others we now know that this parasite causes heavier losses to the breeder and feeder of swine than any other now common in Nebraska.
Adequate Diet For The School Child, Susan Z. Wilder
Adequate Diet For The School Child, Susan Z. Wilder
SDSU Extension Circulars
Ease of digestion and adequacy in protein, minerals, and vitamins are absolutely essential for the school child. The results of mistakes in the feedings of school children are not seen as quickly as in the case of younger children. Mistakes in feeding at this age may result in serious diseases conditions later on. The adolescent child probably requires as much or more food than the adult because he is growing rapidly. The three food needs for both children and adults are those to supply building materials for repair and growth, fuel foods for heat and energy, and to take care …

Fruit And Vegetable Budget, Mary A. Dolve
Fruit And Vegetable Budget, Mary A. Dolve
SDSU Extension Circulars
The great need for fruits and vegetables in the diet makes it necessary to give the supply both as to kinds and quantity careful consideration. It takes careful forethought and planning to supply fruits and vegetables adequately for the winter table as well as for summer use. The consideration of this problem must begin with the planning of the garden so the minimum of two fresh vegetables a day during the summer and two canned or stored vegetables during the winter is provided for.

SDSU Extension Circulars
It is at this time that very careful feeding and management will save most of the pigs which are farrowed, However, most people do not realize that proper feeding and management, during the breeding season and pregnancy, are great factors in not only raising the pigs after farrowing, but also in increasing the number of pics which are farrowed.
Some Field Instruments And Their Applications, G. W. Goldsmith
Some Field Instruments And Their Applications, G. W. Goldsmith
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
Physiology and ecology depend for their constructive development largely upon the applications of physico-chemical concepts to living organisms and their environment, to their life processes, reactions, and interrelations. A concept is valuable biologically in so far as it can be applied and used as a tool for better understanding of the phenomena related to life. Ecology, as the study of the relations between organisms and their environment and of the interrelations of organisms, depends primarily upon the findings of physiology (Clements, 1905). But to apply physicochemical concepts and hence make them of value to the physiologist or ecologist commonly requires …

The County Agent's Handbook, I. B. Johnson
SDSU Extension Circulars
In the daily work of the county agricultural agent, the agricultural extension worker, the farmer, or anyone interested in agriculture, questions arise, whose answers involve much detailed information. Workers have frequently realized the value of a ready, pocket-sized reference from which such information might be obtained. It is hoped that this handbook may fulfill such a requirement. The material enclosed is of special application to the agricultural conditions of South Dakota, yet so much of it is of general application that the handbook will be found useful by any agricultural worker. The loose leaf plan enables anyone to add whatever …
