Bulletin No. 279 - The Fruit Tree Situation In Utah, A. L. Wilson, A. L. Stark Apr 1938

Bulletin No. 279 - The Fruit Tree Situation In Utah, A. L. Wilson, A. L. Stark

UAES Bulletins

The fruit industry in Utah is not large when compared with the total production of the United States. The year 1935 was a favorable fruit season for Utah and yet the state produced only 0.54 percent of the United States' apple crop, 1.30 percent of the peach crop, 0.31 percent of the pears, and 3.72 percent of all cherries. Utah does, however, produce between 10 and 15 percent of all sweet cherries. Even though the Utah fruit industry represents such a small part of the national industry, a great many people of the state are dependent upon it, either wholly …

The Spleen Of The Frog, Clifford F. Moran Apr 1938

The Spleen Of The Frog, Clifford F. Moran

Bachelors’ Theses

Although we of today are living In a relatively advanced state of civilization, there still remains to be solved by man many familiar mysteries. These are found not only in the physical order but in the chemical and biological as well. It seems that the greater strides man takes toward the solution of his difficulties, the more other ones crop up to plague him. With the conquering of such deadly diseases as Diphtheria, Malaria and Scarlet Fever, man once dared to dream about a universe free from sickness. Yet today we find that three others have arisen which are causing …

In Memoriam, Lawrence Bruner, Myron H. Swenk Apr 1937

In Memoriam, Lawrence Bruner, Myron H. Swenk

Nebraska Bird Review

On January 30, 1937, at his home at 3033 Deakin Street in Berkeley, California, Lawrence Bruner, pioneer American economic entomologist and a world authority on grasshoppers and related insects (Orthoptera), as well as the person who more than any other individual was responsible for the organization of the Nebraska Ornithologists’ Union, passed away after a severe illness of a few days that culminated a rather extended period of gradually declining health. It is difficult to epitomize any account of the life accomplishments of this man, because they were so many and varied, and perhaps for this purpose there …

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs Feb 1937

Judging Quality In Dairy Products, P. A. Downs

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

In the dairy industry increasing attention is being paid to the question of quality of products. The well established system of buying and selling butter and cheese on the basis of quality by score or grade is practiced in the principal markets of the world. The other dairy products, while not marketed by score, are receiving more and more attention in this respect. As more information becomes available and the judging better standardized, other dairy products will doubtless be sold by grade.

Diseases Of Upland Game Birds, J. E. Shillinger, L. C. Morley Jan 1937

Diseases Of Upland Game Birds, J. E. Shillinger, L. C. Morley

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Until recently the diseases of upland game birds received comparatively little specific study, except in a few outbreaks in which serious losses were observed. Though highly destructive, many of these outbreaks were of such short duration that the investigations undertaken were chiefly to learn the cause of death and usually were discontinued when losses were no longer noticeable. It has become increasingly evident, however, that every year great numbers of game birds die of disease, the decreases in their numbers frequently occurring in sections closed to hunting, even though food, cover, and other environmental conditions appear ideal. The disease problems …

The Gizzard Worm And Its Transmission To Chickens In Hawaii, Joseph E. Alicata Jan 1937

The Gizzard Worm And Its Transmission To Chickens In Hawaii, Joseph E. Alicata

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Gizzard-worms of poultry, Cheiloapirura hamulosa, are nematodes occurring in the gizzards of chickens and turkeys.

Summary and Conclusions

Previous to this report the carriers for the gizzard-worm in Hawaii were unknown. Recent investigations by the writer have shown that the flour beetle, Tenebroides nana, and the sand hopper, Orchestia platensis, collected from poultry farms in the Territory of Hawaii have been found naturally infested with the infective larvae of the poultry gizzard-worm, Cheilospirura hamulosa. Out of 8 laboratory-raised chickens to which there were fed about 2,300 grasshoppers that had been collected in an endemic gizzard-worm area, …

The Influence Of The Shoreline, Rivers And Springs On The Settlement And Early Development Of Texas, Ellis W. Shuler Nov 1936

The Influence Of The Shoreline, Rivers And Springs On The Settlement And Early Development Of Texas, Ellis W. Shuler

Field and Laboratory

A comparison of early colonial settlements in New England and Texas during the middle of the eighteenth century shows a decided contrast in their locations. In New England the colonists settled along the coast, in Texas along a line roughly parallel to the coast but about one hundred miles into the interior. This distribution, coast line and interior, is all the more striking since in Florida and the West Indies the Spanish colonists, just as the English in New England, settled along the sea margin.

An Interpretive Study Of Some Kentucky Biologists, Rachel Winstead Aug 1936

An Interpretive Study Of Some Kentucky Biologists, Rachel Winstead

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study was undertaken with the idea of bringing together information concerning some of the most important Kentuckians who have made contributions to the biological sciences. In order that we may better understand and appreciate the work done by these men, it was thought best to give a brief discussion of the major periods in the history of biological development. An attempt will be made to interpret the contributions of the men discussed, according to the period in which they lived. Only a sufficient number of men are discussed in each epoch to give a correct picture of the trends …

The Anatomy Of The Oyster, M.J. Rohlinger Apr 1936

The Anatomy Of The Oyster, M.J. Rohlinger

Bachelors’ Theses

The phylum Mollusca manifests the following characteristics: bilateral symmetry; three primary germ layers; free-living and sessile; marine and fresh-water; a shell modified to form either a bivalve or a univalve which gives an appearance of segmentation due to rings of growth or arrangement of certain parts of the shell as is seen in the class Amphineura, this is only apparent metamerism because the Mollusca are considered to be unsegmented animals; a coelom poorly developed; a foot; a mantle cavity; well developed digestive, circulatory, excretory, and reproductive systems. When one inspects a Chiton, an oyster, a snail, an octopus, or a …

Bulletin No. 269 - Farm Versus Village Living In Utah, Joseph A. Geddes Mar 1936

Bulletin No. 269 - Farm Versus Village Living In Utah, Joseph A. Geddes

UAES Bulletins

This is the second of a series of bulletins based on a study of Utah village life which was begun in 1927. The purpose of the investigation was to determine, under prevailing conditions, whether for farm people farm-living is less desirable than village-living. Four type villages were selected in as many counties for field studies.

The Tympanis Canker Of Red Pine, John Raymond Hansbrough Jan 1936

The Tympanis Canker Of Red Pine, John Raymond Hansbrough

Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series

A new disease of red pine has recently been found in southern Connecticut, Rhode Island, eastern Massachusetts, western and central New York, northern New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, central Ohio, and southern Michigan. It is of serious consequence only on plantation-grown red pine, but it also occurs occasionally on eastern white pine. On the former host it is characterized by axially elongated, annual main-stem cankers which are always centered at the nodes. Infection takes place through adhering lateral dead branches and the growth of the fungus after it gains entrance to the stem.is usually very rapid-Le., cankers up to three feet …

Bulletin No. 259 - Drainage Of Land Overlying An Artesian Groudwater Reservoir: Final Report, O. W. Israelsen, W. W. Mclaughlin Nov 1935

Bulletin No. 259 - Drainage Of Land Overlying An Artesian Groudwater Reservoir: Final Report, O. W. Israelsen, W. W. Mclaughlin

UAES Bulletins

This bulletin constitutes a final report of some phases of cooperative drainage studies in Cache Valley, Utah. The drainage problem in Cache Valley is typical, in many respects, of drainage problems in other irrigated valleys of Utah and the West in general. Application of the principles indicated by the problems will doubtless add materially to the productivity of the land in the several communities concerned and will also contribute to the advancement of public welfare in the general improvement of health, economic, and social conditions. Alkali and water-logging affecting large areas are causes not only of low productivity of the …
