Cyclustra Ardeae N. Sp. And The Status Of Dendrouterina Fuhrmann, 1912 (Cestoda: Dilepididae), Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Three cestodes representing a species of the genus Cyclustra Fuhrmann, 1901, were obtained by the writer from a great blue heron, Ardea herodias L., collected at Neville, Rock County, Wisconsin, on April 14, 1947. The bird was an adult male, weighing 2,630 grams. Two other great blue herons from this locality were also autopsied, but were negative for this cestode. Two species of Cyclustra are known, bath from ardeiform birds. The Wisconsin material differs from these in morphological details, and is described herein as new.
The cestodes were stained with Semichon's acetic carmine, and mounted entire. The strobila of this …

The Advisory Committee on Weather Control was established by the Act of August 13, 1953 (67 Stat, 559), to make a study of all public and private experiments in weather control and report its findings to the President for submission to the Congress from time to time, making a final report no later than June 30, 1956. The Committee set up a "Proposed Work Program Commencing July 1, 1954", dated Kay 28, 1954, which outlined seven projects. The portion of the program outlining Project Two is reproduced below in the section "Scope of Study and Report". Dean A, M, Eberle, …

Our way of life is based on the ability of our agriculture to produce abundantly, efficiently, and at a low cost; and the position of agriculture today is largely a result of the research efforts of the state agricultural experiment stations and the United States Department of Agriculture. In the 66 years since the establishment of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, its scientists have found solutions to many of the problems peculiar to its location, topography, and climate. It is logical to rely on these same research forces to solve the problems of the future.

Study Of The Aspectional Variations Of Siphonaptera Associated With The Nests Of The Thomas Wood Rat Neotoma Lepida Lepida Thomas, J. Franklin Howell
Theses and Dissertations
Much work has been done concerning those parasites found upon the host. Very little has been done concerning those parasites that are parasitic but are very rarely found upon the host. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine seasonal distribution of those fleas found in the nests of the desert wood rat (N. l. lepida). This paper shows that there is a seasonal variation of flea populations within a certain geographic area. It also shows that certain species of fleas are distributed seasonally; not all species being present in the same season. Three of the eleven species collected …

As the result of field and laboratory investigations extending over a period of more than four years, we have amassed considerable information on the life cycle and ecology of a cestode of the genus Echinococcus (Rudolphi, 1801). Occurring on St. Lawrence Island, which lies in Bering Sea about 40 miles southeast of Cape Chukotskyi, northeast Siberia, this cestode not only has an interesting life cycle, but in the larval stage is an important parasite of humans.

During the summer of 1953, Mr. Edward T. Roche, of the Department of Zoology, University of Southern California, continued observations on the life history of the ground squirrel, Citellus undulatus barrowensis (Merriam), along the Meade River south of Point Barrow, Alaska. In the course of this work, 55 ground squirrels were examined for intestinal parasites, and were found commonly to harbor cestodes. Mr. Roche kindly offered a number of these cestodes to the writer for study, and they represent an undescribed species of Paranoplocephala Liihe, 1910.
In appreciation of the generous cooperation extended to the personnel of this laboratory by …

According to Eguchi (1934), two species of salmon (Oncorhynchus) serve as a source of human infection by a cestode identified as Diphyllobothrium latum (Linnaeus, 1758), in Japan. The possible role of these fishes in the transmission of cestodes to humans and other animals has not been investigated in North America, nor, apparently, on the Eurasian mainland. However, Ward (1930) reported unidentified Diphyllobothrium-like plerocercoids from Alaskan salmon; Simms and Shaw (1931) collected plerocercoids identified as D. cordiceps (Leidy, 1871) from Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum) from lakes in Oregon; and Wardle (1932) reported plerocercoids of Diphyllobothrium spp. from O. kisutch …
