The Prevention Of Recurrent Peritoneal Adhesions: A Clinical And Laboratory Investigation, T. A. Cromwell, Joseph L. Ponka
The Prevention Of Recurrent Peritoneal Adhesions: A Clinical And Laboratory Investigation, T. A. Cromwell, Joseph L. Ponka
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
This study documented the fact that recurrent episodes of small bowel obstruction were not uncommon (38%) in a review of 120 patients who underwent lysis of adhesions or lysis of adhesions and Noble Plication. A laboratory experiment using dogs was constructed to compare dextran to a combined promethazine-dexamethasone regimen for the prevention of adhesion formation in the immediate post-operative period. Dextran was completely ineffective in preventing adhesion reformation. Meticulous surgical technique remains the single most important factor in adhesion prevention.

Mycosis Fungoides With Thrombotic Microangiopathy And Major Central Nervous System Manifestations, T. A. Chapel, S. M. Saeed, B. W. Steinhauer
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A case of mycosis fungoides is presented which terminated in death by an acute central nervous system illness. Autopsy revealed thrombotic microangiopathy. This is felt to be the first report of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura occurring in a patient with mycosis fungoides. Since thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura has been reported in association with other malignancies, the association of these relatively rare disorders may represent more than a coincidence.

Renal Cell Carcinoma Masquerading As A Pancreatic Pseudocyst: A Case Report, Stuart J. Kingma, Hubert M. Allen
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A case is reported in which an abdominal mass was treated initially as a traumatic pseudocyst of the pancreas. Subsequent studies elucidated the true nature of the lesion, a renal cell carcinoma. The use of visceral arteriography as a definitive diagnostic tool is illustrated by this case.

Immunoglobulin Levels In Spinal Fluid And Saliva By Direct Immunochemical Assay And Microscopic Measurements, Hajime Hayashi, Gerald A. Logrippo, Mary Perry
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The immunochemical procedure used in this hospital for serum immunoglobulins (Igs) has been modified to increase sensitivity (5-to-20-fold) so that minute quantities of immunoglobulins can now be measured directly in unconcentrated body fluids. Normal spinal fluid Ig levels (±2 S.D. from normal means) were found to be: 0.01-0.21 mg/100 ml for IgA; 0.5-2.50 mg/100 for IgG: and no detectable quantities for IgM. Normal (pooled) salivary Ig levels were found to be 0.01-2.25 mg/100 ml for IgA: trace quandties to 1.85 mg/100 ml for IgG: and no detectable quantities for IgM. Spinal fluid and salivary Igs were assayed in 227 adults …
The Effect Of Phenobarbital On Serum Bilirubin Of Full Term Infants: A Controlled Study, Mary J. Kokosky, Harold A. Falconer, Lester Weiss
The Effect Of Phenobarbital On Serum Bilirubin Of Full Term Infants: A Controlled Study, Mary J. Kokosky, Harold A. Falconer, Lester Weiss
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Three bundled twenty-eight infants weighing more than 2500 grams were studied for the effect of low dose phenobarbital (15 mg/day) upon third and fifth day serum bilirubin levels. The groups were divided according to sex, race and type of treatment. Controls were made for the possible effect of the 14% ethanol contained in phenobarbital elixir. It was found that males had higher mean serum bilirubin levels than females, Caucasians had higher mean serum bilirubin levels than Negroes, and control infants had higher serum bilirubin values than those infants treated with phenobarbital. However, in those patients who had lower serum bilirubin …

A Comparative Study Of The Head And Thoracic Osteology And Myology Of The Skinks Eumeces Gilberti Van Denburgh And Eumeces Skiltonianus (Baird And Girard), David F. Nash, Wilmer W. Tanner
A Comparative Study Of The Head And Thoracic Osteology And Myology Of The Skinks Eumeces Gilberti Van Denburgh And Eumeces Skiltonianus (Baird And Girard), David F. Nash, Wilmer W. Tanner
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
The differences observed from the osteology and myology are few and subtle.
Neither species is consistent in having all of the anatomical characters equal. E. skiltonianus, however, is more variable than gilberti. This species: 1. exhibits a wider range of variation in the number of slips of the intermandibularis anterior; 2. has two distinct bundles of the depressor mandibularis; and 3. has variation in the anterior suture pattern of the frontal, nasal, prefrontal and maxilla elements. E. gilberti on the other hand has: 1. only one distinct bundle of the depressor mandibularis; 2. a frequent reduction of the relative size …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Cestodes representing six species of the genus Diphyllobothrium Cobbold, 1858, were collected from naturally infected terrestrial mammals in Alaska during the period 1949-1970. Additional specimens were reared in experimentally infected animals. Of the species identified, viz., D. latum (Linnaeus, 1758), D. dendriticum (Nitzsch, 1824), D. lanceolatum (Krabbe, 1865), D. ursi Rausch, 1954, D. dalliae Rausch, 1956, and D. alascense Rausch and Williamson, 1958, all but D. alascense were obtained from man after treatment with quinacrine. D. latum occurred most commonly in humans; D. ursi is reported for the first time from this host, and D. lanceolatum in humans was represented …

Mites And Lice Of The National Reactor Testing Station, Dorald M. Allred
Mites And Lice Of The National Reactor Testing Station, Dorald M. Allred
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
Mites of 47 species and lice of 16 species were taken from reptiles of 3 species, birds of 23 species, and mammals of 18 species at the National Reactor Testing Station between June, 1966, and September, 1967. Mammals differed in degree of infestation relative to their geographic distribution at the station. The number of species of ectoparasites which occurred on a particular kind of host generally was in direct proportion to the number of hosts examined, but exceptions occurred in some instances. In some cases the rate of infestation differed relative to the sex of the host. The greatest numbers …
Sentiment Changes And Recreation Participation, Perry J. Brown
Sentiment Changes And Recreation Participation, Perry J. Brown
Forest Management Faculty Publications
If participation in recreation activities represents a choice among alternatives, then such discretion may have implications for measuring activity participation. Following is a discussion of the discretionary nature of recreation and the importance of such discretion for use projection which utilizes participation rates. It is proposed that consumer sentiment about the economy at the time participation data are collected is important in evaluating the data and activity projections. The 1960 Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission projections indicated that participation in recreation activities would increase by a factor of three from 1960 to 2000 (13). More recent (1965) statistics published by …

Distribution Of The Native Trees Of Utah, Kimball S. Erdman
Distribution Of The Native Trees Of Utah, Kimball S. Erdman
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
Although botanists have been actively collecting in Utah for well over a century, the distribution of many plants are as yet imperfectly known. This is, in part, due to the scattered nature of Utah herbarium material. Also the terrain of the state has impeded collection in more rugged and remote areas. The present study gathers together the data from the major collections of native Utah trees and clarifies our present understanding of tree distributions in the state. The older collection records have been extensively supplemented by the field work of the author and other botanists.

Assessing Attempted Suicide, Walter J. Cassidy
Assessing Attempted Suicide, Walter J. Cassidy
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Fifty successive patients attempting suicide are assessed from the standpoint of communication (how, when and to whom), manipulativeness, impulsiveness and the dangerousness of the pattern of behavior involved in the attempted suicide. This assessment is meant to clarify the component motivations of suicidal behavior, appeal and self-destruction. The earlier, more obvious the communication, the more definite is the manipulation, the more readily apparent the appeal function. Conversely the later, the less obvious the communication or the absence of communication, the more subtle or absent manipulation the greater is the dominance of self-destructive motivation over the appeal function of the attempted …

Percutaneous Absorption Of Betamethasone-17-Benzoate, George R. Mikhail
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Percutaneous absorption of betamethasone-17-benzoate, a new topical corticosteroid, was sufficient enough to result in adrenocortical suppression in patients with psoriasis or atopic dermatitis when 0.025% of the steroid cream was applied under occlusion to 30% or more of the body surface, using 9 gm or more of the preparation. The adrenal function returned to normal within a short time after the cream was discontinued.

Quantitative Determination Of C-Reactive Protein (Crp) By Micro-Double Diffusion Technic, Hajime Hayashi, Gerald A. Logrippo, Mary Perry
Quantitative Determination Of C-Reactive Protein (Crp) By Micro-Double Diffusion Technic, Hajime Hayashi, Gerald A. Logrippo, Mary Perry
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
C-reactive protein (CRP) determinations in serum have been evaluated by two methods: the capillary tube method (presently in use) and the double diffusion technic (a newly developed procedure standardized in this laboratory). Advantages of the double diffusion technic are (1) quantitation of CRP in milligrams per 100 ml of serum, (2) differentiation of CRP from non-specific precipitates often found in patients' sera, and (3) increased sensitivity. A normal range of CRP levels has been established by analyzing serum from 750 supposedly healthy blood bank donors. Ninety-five percent of the donor population possess less than 1.0 mg of CRP per 100 …

Hypophyseal Growth Hormone Ii. Interaction With Other Hormones, M. Saeed-Uz-Zafar, Raymond C. Mellinger, Lewis B. Morrow
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Growth hormone (GH) synthesis and release is controlled by hypothalamic GH releasing factor. Thyroid hormones, androgens and estrogens in physiologic concentrations enhance GH secretion but a controlling role for glucagon and vasopressin in GH release is not established. Under stress, ACTH directly facilitates GH release while the similar action of the catecholamines is mediated by the a-adrenergic receptors. Though physiologic doses of glucorticoids and progestins do not affect GH liberation, prolonged administration of medroxyprogesterone acetate or of glucocorticoids in high dosage will decrease blood levels or blunt Gti responsiveness. GH enhances the release of insulin. A shift in adrenal steroid …

Health Nurse Clinician: An Extended Role For The Professional Nurse, C. E. Rupe, Diana Downs, Diane L. Kerr, William W. Hardy
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A program to upgrade the level of nursing involvement in patient care has been established in conjunction with Wayne Slate University. Offered as a possible solution to the shortage of health care personnel, the master's degree program would result in an upward movement of medical personnel and provide more continuity of care to the patient. More specifically, the trained Health Nurse Clinician would be able to provide better nursing care because of the nurse's greater awareness of the patient's health problem. She (or he) could also free the physician from some of the time-consuming aspects of routine physical examination without …
