Early Surgical Decompression For The Treatment Of Hourglass-Like Constriction Of The Posterior Interosseus Nerve, Nathan Redlich, Matan Ozery, Adam Haydel, Charles Cush, Rasheed Ahmad
School of Medicine Faculty Publications
Posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) syndrome refers to a rare compressive neuropathy of the PIN resulting in motor dysfunction of the forearm extensor compartment. Often, surgical exploration will reveal extrinsic structures that mechanically compress the nerve. Less frequently, PIN syndrome has been reported with a visible hourglass-like constriction and no identifiable causative adjacent structures. In our report, we describe an adolescent patient with PIN syndrome and associated hourglass-like constriction of the PIN. For diagnosis, we used physical examination, preoperative imaging, nerve studies, and intraoperative findings. To monitor recovery, we performed serial neurological examinations and documented patient-reported functional outcomes. The patient underwent …

A Geomatic Appraisal On Restoration Of Tank Cascade Systems In Ambuliyar Watershed, Tamilnadu, Nasir N
A Geomatic Appraisal On Restoration Of Tank Cascade Systems In Ambuliyar Watershed, Tamilnadu, Nasir N
Theses and Dissertations
Tanks and earthen embankments used for water harvesting and storage have been a significant part of India's irrigation system since the 2nd and 3rd centuries. In Tamil Nadu, around 39,202 tanks have storage capacities of around 178.94 million cubic feet. However, they have been impacted by natural and anthropogenic threats such as soil erosion, siltation, inadequate rainfall, and drought. This study aims to determine the current storage capacity of tanks, estimate the loss in storage capacity/volume of silt, estimate the rate of siltation and life of tanks, identify soil erosion-prone zones, and map deteriorating parameters along supply channels.
The study …

BACKGROUND: Common barriers to students' persistence in research include experiencing feelings of exclusion and a lack of belonging, difficulties developing a robust researcher identity, perceptions of racial and social stigma directed toward them, and perceived gaps in research skills, which are particularly pronounced among trainees from groups traditionally underrepresented in research. To address these known barriers, summer research programs have been shown to increase the participation and retention of undergraduate students in research. However, previous programs have focused predominantly on technical knowledge and skills, without integrating an academic enrichment curriculum that promotes professional development by improving students' academic and research …

Bank Fragility After Mergers, Jeffrey Jou, Teng Wang, Jeffery Y. Zhang
Bank Fragility After Mergers, Jeffrey Jou, Teng Wang, Jeffery Y. Zhang
Law & Economics Working Papers
Do banks become more fragile after merging? By constructing a novel forward-looking measure of fragility and exploiting staggered interstate banking deregulation as exogenous shocks to bank mergers, we show that the loan portfolios of merged U.S. banks become more vulnerable to adverse economic conditions. However, merger size matters. The increase in fragility is driven almost entirely by mega-mergers of large banks, suggesting the presence of moral hazard. In addition, we find that increased geographic or portfolio diversification following mergers does not offset the increase in fragility. If anything, mergers between large banks that have significantly dissimilar portfolios can actually worsen …
Screening And Treatment Of Iron Deficiency Among Heart Failure Patients With Impaired Ejection Fraction: The Impact Of A Pharmacist-Led Protocol, Firas Al Badarin, Feras Bader, Bassam Atallah
Screening And Treatment Of Iron Deficiency Among Heart Failure Patients With Impaired Ejection Fraction: The Impact Of A Pharmacist-Led Protocol, Firas Al Badarin, Feras Bader, Bassam Atallah
Faculty Scholarship
Background: Despite guideline-recommended routine screening and iron deficiency (ID) treatment among heart failure (HF) patients, these practices are often underutilized. Currently, limited data are available on the outcomes of pharmacists' programs to enhance ID screening and management. Accordingly, we sought to describe the frequency and yield of screening for ID and intravenous (IV) iron replacement rates among our cohort of HF patients and examined the impact of implementing a pharmacist-led protocol (PLP) aimed at enhancing these rates. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study involving HF patients with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) <45% at a quaternary care hospital in the Middle East/Gulf region. The PLP was introduced in August 2022. Data on demographics, comorbidities, echocardiographic parameters, laboratory findings (including ID screening and its findings), and rates of treatment with IV iron replacement were analyzed and compared between the pre-implementation group (n = 432, October 2015–February 2020) and the post-implementation group (n = 154, August 2022–January 2023). Results: Before the PLP, 63.2% (n = 273) of eligible patients underwent ID screening, with 80.6% (n = 220) found to have ID. Following the implementation of the PLP, screening rates significantly increased to 86.4% (n = 133) (p = 0.03), with 53.4% (n = 71) diagnosed with ID. The rate of IV iron replacement in ID patients improved from 30.4% (n = 67) in the pre-PLP group to 73% (n = 52) in the post-PLP group (p < 0.001). Multivariable logistic regression identified baseline glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and hemoglobin levels as significant predictors of IV iron replacement in the pre-PLP cohort. Conclusions: Implementing a pharmacist-led protocol was significantly associated with enhancing the screening and treatment of ID in patients with HF and LVEF <45%. This study demonstrates the crucial role of pharmacists in optimizing guideline-directed therapies, which can be replicated in various healthcare settings.

Neurotechnology Works Its Way Forward, Jeremy Ben Merkelson, Wendy Kearns, David Rice, Elyse Sparks
Seattle University Law Review Online
Neurotechnology is an emerging and rapidly advancing field of technology used to collect, process, and analyze brain or nervous system activity. The market is expected to reach $21 billion by 2026.
In a previous article, published in October 2023, we explored the potential of neurotechnology applications in the workplace, like electroencephalogram (EEG) headbands that monitor fatigue and boost safety, software and EEG combination technologies that creates a shortcut to the human brain and optimizes complex decision-making, and earbuds that track focus and stress.
We have continued to study and speak about these issues in various forums, and meanwhile, technology and …

Adoption Of Improved Crop Varieties Limited Biodiversity Losses, Terrestrial Carbon Emissions, And Cropland Expansion In The Tropics, Uris Baldos, Alfredo Cisneros-Pineda, Keith O. Fuglie, Thomas Hertel
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
Research investments in crop improvements, including by national and international agricultural research centers, have made significant contributions to raising yields of staple food crops in developing countries. Although mostly intended to improve food security and rural incomes, innovations in crop production also have major implications for the environment. Building on the latest productivity estimates from historical crop improvements in developing countries and using a gridded (0.25 degrees) equilibrium model of global agriculture, we assess the impacts of improved crop varieties on cropland use, threatened biodiversity, and terrestrial carbon stocks over 1961–2015. We replicate a historical baseline and produce a counterfactual …

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Latino immigrant workers have been an exploited community within many dangerous workforces, but especially within the agricultural industry. They are a crucial population for the labor and economy of the U.S., yet Latino farmworkers report feeling expendable, discriminated against, and exposed to hazardous working conditions. Due to these experiences, it is essential to explore the resources that farmworkers find valuable in improving their working conditions. This study draws upon qualitative interviews conducted with 41 Latino farmworkers in Oregon. Themes pertaining to work and nonwork resources were uncovered through thematic analysis, illustrating that farmworkers receive support from their proximal communities and …

During the Vietnam War, the U.S. Department of Defense (“DOD”) created a new program that targeted marginalized communities, resulting in thousands of deaths and adversely impacting the lives of more than one hundred thousand others. This Article—which draws on original archival research from obscure DOD files—uncovers the origins and effects of the program called “Project One Hundred Thousand.” This research reveals that the program drafted members of impoverished communities to serve in the place of more privileged men, who received draft exemptions. The program enabled the U.S. government to continue the war at scale without incurring an unacceptable loss of …
