The Effect Of Escherichia Coli Endotoxin On The Cat Periapical Tissues, Thomas G. Dwyer Jun 1979

The Effect Of Escherichia Coli Endotoxin On The Cat Periapical Tissues, Thomas G. Dwyer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The periapical tissue reaction to three concentrations of endotoxin solutions and to a sterile saline control solution was examined in six adult cats. The maxillary and mandibular cuspids were isolated and the pulps extirpated with barbed broaches. The four solutions (1, 10, 100 μg/ml endotoxin, and saline) were then injected into the four prepared teeth for each cat and the access cavities sealed with IRM.

At two week intervals, two cats were sacrificed and the specimens removed, while the remaining animals were retreated as previously described. The block tissue sections were radiographed, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and prepared for …

The Effects Of Temperature And Ph On The Differentiation Of Trypanosoma Lewisi (Kent, 1880) Laveran & Mesnil, 1901, In A Defined Medium, Carolann R. Rosario Jun 1979

The Effects Of Temperature And Ph On The Differentiation Of Trypanosoma Lewisi (Kent, 1880) Laveran & Mesnil, 1901, In A Defined Medium, Carolann R. Rosario

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Trypanosoma lewisi is an arthropod-transmitted protozoan parasite found in the bloodstream of rats. In its life cycle it undergoes cellular differentiation. It is primarily found as the trypomastigote form in the rat and as the epimastigote form in the arthropod, the rat flea. Various studies have been done on hemoflagellates to determine the factors responsible for stimulating the differentiation from one form to the other. Included in these factors are pH, temperature, and protein fractions from fetal calf serum. Recent efforts have also been aimed at developing simple or defined media for physiological or biochemical studies on hemoflagellates. The purpose …

Concomitant Infections With The Parasites Trypanosoma Musculi Kendall, 1906 And Trichinella Spiralis (Owen, 1835) Raillet, 1896 In The Laboratory Mouse, Musmusculus, Joan Chew Liang Tan Jun 1979

Concomitant Infections With The Parasites Trypanosoma Musculi Kendall, 1906 And Trichinella Spiralis (Owen, 1835) Raillet, 1896 In The Laboratory Mouse, Musmusculus, Joan Chew Liang Tan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Four groups of female Swiss Webster mice were injected intraperitoneally with similar volumes of normal saline, sonicated Trypanosoma musculi and saline, sonicated trypanosomes and Freund's Complete Adjuvant (FCA) and FCA. When the mice became immune and thus responded negatively to a T. musculi challenge, sera were collected and administered to four other groups of mice to establish passive immunity in these animals.

An established dose of innoculum of Trichinella spiralis larvae (8.1 larvae/gram of body weight) was given to all the mice by gastric gavage. These mice were killed 26 days later and the musculature digested with artificial gastric juice …

The Effects Of Orally Administered Charcoal On Intestinal Gas, Herbert J. Thompson Jun 1979

The Effects Of Orally Administered Charcoal On Intestinal Gas, Herbert J. Thompson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Our primary objectives were to determine if orally administered charcoal effectively decreased intestinal gas, and relieved subjective symptoms associated with a high gas producing meal.

The adsorptive properties of charcoal for those gases usually found in intestines (CO2, H2, CH4, H2S) were first tested by placing measured samples of each gas alone with weighted samples of activated charcoal in a respirometer.

The degree of adsorption of each gas by charcoal was determined. Charcoal effectively adsorbed H2 and CO2.

A group of normal human males were fed a gas producing …

Ascorbic Acid, Lipid Peroxidation, And Aging, Brian Evan Leibovitz May 1979

Ascorbic Acid, Lipid Peroxidation, And Aging, Brian Evan Leibovitz

Dissertations and Theses

The role of ascorbic acid with regard to lipid peroxidation and aging has been examined. A thorough literature analysis indicates that free radical-induced lipid peroxidation is a plausible biochemical explanation for aging. Lipid peroxidation causes cellular damage due to altered enzyme activities, error-prone nucleic acid metabolism, and membrane dysfunction, as well as the accumulation of aging pigments in the lysomes. Ascorbic acid, a water soluble free radical quencher, was examined with regard to carbon tetra-chloride-induced lipid peroxidation and in vivo aging. Carbon tetrachloride, a well-known free radical inducer, caused marked increases in the ration of oxidized/reduced vitamin C only …

Androgen-Induced Immunosuppression, Debra Ann Weyant May 1979

Androgen-Induced Immunosuppression, Debra Ann Weyant

Dissertations and Theses

It is well established that females are more immunocompetent than males as evidenced by higher humoral antibody titers, lowered susceptibility to infection, and more efficient graft rejection.

Furthermore, females also exhibit a much higher incidence of autoimmune disease. These observations have led investigators to believe that the male hormonal environment may play a key role in the regulation of immune response. For this reason, this study is concerned with the expression of autoimmunity and of immune function in the mouse.

This study included the New Zealand Black (NZB) mouse strain, as an animal model for human SLE, as well as …

Egg Recognition And Its Adaptive Significance In Colonial, Altricial Birds, Glen A. Lanier Jr. May 1979

Egg Recognition And Its Adaptive Significance In Colonial, Altricial Birds, Glen A. Lanier Jr.

Biology ETDs

Naturally occurring populations of three species of colonial, altricial birds, the Piñon Jay (Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus), Great-tailed Grackle (Cassidix mexicanus) and Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) were tested for egg discrimination and the presence of intraspecific brood parasitism such discrimination would imply. Current theory predicts that, based on the intense pressure to increase personal fitness, brood parasitism, or cheating, should occur when a brood parasite's fitness is enhanced relative to a nonparasite's. Due to the high costs of parental care in altricial birds, selection against such cheaters (actual or potential) should also be intense. Egg rejection is the most common selection mechanism …

Estimation Of The Pantothenic Acid Content Of Foods Using A Microbiological Assay And A Radioimmunoassay, Joan Howe Walsh May 1979

Estimation Of The Pantothenic Acid Content Of Foods Using A Microbiological Assay And A Radioimmunoassay, Joan Howe Walsh

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Seventy-five processed and prepared foods commonly consumed in the United States were analyzed for pantothenic acid. The foods were analyzed using the traditional microbiological assay for the vitamin and using a new radioimmunoassay (RIA).

The preparation of food sample extracts for both assays was modified. After the food samples underwent enzyme hydrolysis, the food-enzyme mixture was dialyzed to obtain a clear extract for use in the assays. Previously, the food-enzyme mixture was poured through filter paper for clarification.

A very high correlation (r2= .937) between the results from the RIA and the microbiological assay was found. There was …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Cell mediated immune (CMI) cytotoxic reactivity of Balb/c mice against H238 cells, a Herpes simplex virus (HSV) Type 2 - induced sarcoma, was measured by the 125IUdR release assay. The Balb/c mouse response to the growing HSV-induced tumor, treated with radiation and , was measured by survival rate, tumor growth and immune cytotoxicity of spleen and peritoneal exudate cells (PEC) as determined by 125IUdR release assay. Subcutaneous (s.c.) inoculation of 1 x 106 H238 cells (high dose) produced progressive tumor growth while s.c. inoculation of 1 x 104 H238 cells (low dose) produced no tumors. A …

Natural Selection And Sex Change In Pandalid Shrimp: Test Of A Life History Theory, Eric Charnov May 1979

Natural Selection And Sex Change In Pandalid Shrimp: Test Of A Life History Theory, Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

This article presents a graphical approach to the genetical theory of sex change (similar to one recently applied to the evolution of simultaneous hermaphroditism). The graphs will help clarify a set of predictions to be tested against data from Pandalid shrimp. These shrimp are protandrous hermaphrodites (reproduce first as males). The goal is to use the genetical theory to predict the age of sex change. Since these shrimp show much geographic variation in this age, they provide a good opportunity to test the evolutionary model.

Simultaneous Hermaphroditism And Sexual Selection, Eric Charnov May 1979

Simultaneous Hermaphroditism And Sexual Selection, Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Theory about the evolution of sexual behavior in dioecious species is based on the general assumption that egg production is limited by a female's ability to garner resources to make eggs, not by a lack of sperm to fertilize them. Reproductive success for males is thus limited by access to females (and their eggs). I suggest that egg production by simultaneous hermaphrodites also obeys this principle--that fertilized egg production by an individual is not limited by sperm availability, but by resources allocated to eggs. If true, this suggests that sperm competition (reproduction success through male function) and a form of …

Unequal Sex Ratios In An Unhunted Mule Deer Population In New Mexico, Pamela Cotton Apr 1979

Unequal Sex Ratios In An Unhunted Mule Deer Population In New Mexico, Pamela Cotton

Biology ETDs

The adult sex ratio and the sex ratio at birth was determined for the unhunted mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) population occupying the riverbed area of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, Socorro County, New Mexico. The adult sex ratio was computed as the number of yearling and adult males per number of yearling and adult females observed within the effective area of seven linear one-mile transects established on the study area in accordance with the Stake Estimator Technique (Evans 1975). The ratio of 586 males:501 females (117:100) was significantly different from a 50:50 ratio. No evidence was found for …

The German-Russian Brauche., Dawn Schock

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

The thesis is a study of German-Russian Brauche--an alternative system of healing which exists in south-central North Dakota. The text is divided into two sections: a history of the German-Russian people, complied from written sources; and a description and discussion of Brauche which relies extensively on personal interviews(included in the appendix) with Mrs. Eva Iszler, a practicing Brauche in Ashley, North Dakota.

The history of the German-Russian people is characterized by two major migrations: from Germany to Russia, and from Russia to the United States. Because these migrations were en masse and because the group has had to encounter three …

Regulation Of The Immune Response To H-Y Antigen In The Mouse, Teresa A. Coons Apr 1979

Regulation Of The Immune Response To H-Y Antigen In The Mouse, Teresa A. Coons

Biology ETDs

The ability of female mice to reject tailskin grafts from male mice of the same inbred strain appears to be regulated by genes located in the major histocompatibility complex of the female recipient. Cell-meditated responses of “nonrejector” strain female mice, grafted with male tailskin, were studied to better understand regulation of the immune response to H-Y (male) antigen. Both in vivo and in vitro experimental systems were used. Survival of male skin grafts on splenectomized female recipients was compared with survival of grafts on untreated females and on splenectomized females reconstituted with spleen or thymus cell preparations. In addition, we …

A Study Of Froth Flotation For Deinking Of Uv-Cured Inks, Prasit Pornpaitoonsakul

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Deinkability of UV-cured inks becomes increasingly important as more printers turn to this faster and easier printing method. Unfortunately, according to Ortner, Wood and Gartermann all known deinking process and formulations failed to deink these printing inks. Therefore it was the objective of this study to determine the feasibility of deinking paper printed with this new solventless ink. A critical review of the literature on flotation deinking was made. Zeta potential of the UV-cured ink was measured. The results were used to explain the effect of the kind and quantity of chemicals used in the flotation operation were investigated. It …

Motility Of The Microtubular Axostyle In Pyrsonympha, George M. Langford, Shinya Inoué Mar 1979

Motility Of The Microtubular Axostyle In Pyrsonympha, George M. Langford, Shinya Inoué

Biology - All Scholarship

The rhythmic movement of the microtubular axostyle in the termite flagellate, Pyrsonympha vertens, was analyzed with polarization and electron microscopy. The protozoan axostyle is birefringent as a result of the semi-crystalline alignment of approximately 2,000 microtubules. The birefringence of the organelle permits analysis of the beat pattern in vivo. Modifications of the beat pattern were achieved with visible and UV microbeam irradiation. The beating axostyle is helically twisted and has two principal movements, one resembling ciliary and the other flagellar beating. The anterior portion of the beating axostyle has effective and recovery phases with each beat thereby simulating the flexural …

In Vitro Incorporation Of Molybdate Into Demolybdoproteins In Escherichia Coli Feb 1979

In Vitro Incorporation Of Molybdate Into Demolybdoproteins In Escherichia Coli

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

When Escherichia coli was grown in the presence of tungstate, inactive forms of two molybdoenzymes, nitrate reductase and formate dehydrogenase, accumulated and were converted to their active forms upon incubation of cell suspensions with molybdate and chloramphenicol. The conversion to the active enzymes did not occur in cell extracts. When incubated with [(99)Mo]molybdate and chloramphenicol, the tungstate-grown cells incorporated (99)Mo into protein components which were released from membranes by procedures used to release nitrate reductase and formate dehydrogenase and which migrated with these activities on polyacrylamide gels. Although neither activity was formed during incubation of the crude extract with molybdate, …

Macroinvertebrate Populations In The Upper Mississippi River, David R. Mcconville Jan 1979

Macroinvertebrate Populations In The Upper Mississippi River, David R. Mcconville

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The macroinvertebrate community of the Mississippi River near Monticell, Minnesota, was examined for 22 months. Quantitative bottom fauna information was obtained by use of concrete block artificial substrate sampling units. Representative organisms were obtained from seven (7) orders, 15 families and 35 genera of benthic macroinvertebrates. All taxa collected displayed definite seasonal trends. The Orders Trichoptera, Diptera, and Ephemeroptera were the most abundant groups collected, Trichoptera (Hydropsyche and Cheumatopsyche) were the dominant members of the benthic population in both numbers and biomass. Midges and blackflies were the dominant Diptera. Pseudocloeon, Stenonema, and Ephemerella were the most frequently collected mayflies.

Comparison Of Tolerance To High Moisture Conditions Of The Soil Among Crop Plants: Studies On The Comparative Plant Nutrition [English Translation], Toshiaki Tadano, Kiyokazu Kirimoto, Isao Aoyama, Arika Tanaka

Publications

Tolerance to high moisture conditions in the soil was compared for eighteen crop species, and factors causing differences among species were studied: 1) When the moisture content of a soil was kept high, the soil air contained 10.5 - 17.5% of O2 and 5.0 - 9.8% of CO2, and the soil solution was not very high in Fe, Mn or NO2-N. 2) Cruciferae, Solanaceae, sugar beet, field bean, pea, cucumber and Chrysanthemum coronarium were very susceptible to this condition, but maize, soybean, and onion were tolerant. Rice grew better under this condition than under ordinary upland conditions. 3) Tolerance to …
