Studies Of Rickets In Swine, William J. Loeffel, Ray R. Thalman, F. C. Olson, F. A. Olson Aug 1931

Studies Of Rickets In Swine, William J. Loeffel, Ray R. Thalman, F. C. Olson, F. A. Olson

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

During the years 1925 to 1929 inclusive, the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station carried on a series of four experiments to study the importance of the antirachitic factors in the nutrition of swine. Vitamin D as obtained from cod-liver oil and the radiant-energy factor of sunlight were the sources of the antirachitic factors that received primary consideration. Emphasis was placed upon the study of the symptoms and lesions produced in pigs fed a rickets-producing ration.

The Development Of The Archegonium Of Marchantia PolymorphumL., Mary Virginia Braukman Aug 1931

The Development Of The Archegonium Of Marchantia PolymorphumL., Mary Virginia Braukman

Bachelors’ Theses

Marchantia polymorphum L. grows commonly under moist conditions, in ravines or along the sides of ditches, banks of streams, and in other similar places. It can be found in what appear to be quite dry situations, though it is more nearly correct to state that it can exist through more or less prolonged dry periods. It grows actively only when conditions are comparatively moist. Marchantia reaches its best development on damp burnt-over wooded places. Marchantia polymorphum L. appears as a flat dichotomously branched thallus, closely pressed to the substratum on which it grows. The thallus is selt-supporting, possessing chlorophyll, and …

Microsporogenesis In Lilium Formosum, Marcella Alice Zeman

Bachelors’ Theses

Anthers of Lilium formosum were collected ranging from the very young to the mature. Anthers used for the writing of this paper were gathered around Easter time or early April. The anthers were removed from the bud and the ends were cut off. Each anther was cut into three or four parts at right angles to their respective lengths. After the washing, infiltration, and imbedding was completed, sections were cut from eight to ten micra in thickness. Before staining the sections were placed in a solution of hydrogen peroxide to bleach for three hours. Flemming 's triple stain, a combination …

Bulletin No. 226 - Alfalfa-Seed Production, J. W. Carlson, George Stewart May 1931

Bulletin No. 226 - Alfalfa-Seed Production, J. W. Carlson, George Stewart

UAES Bulletins

Utah's alfalfa-seed crop is of far-reaching importance. Since 1919, the growing of this crop has been a major industry in western Millard County and in that part of the Uintah Basin situated in Utah. These places are two of the relatively few large areas in the United States peculiarly adapted by climate for the successful growing of alfalfa-seed. As a cash crop, alfalfa-seed has a high commercial value. It is also the basis of the state's alfalfa hay crop, which in turn constitutes the foundation of Utah's livestock industry. Because of its wide dissemination, Utah's alfalfa-seed crop influences the feed …

Utilization Of Proteins By The Growing Chick, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson May 1931

Utilization Of Proteins By The Growing Chick, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

1. There is a marked difference in the nutritive value of the various protein-contributing concentrates when used to supplement a corn-wheat basal ration which has been made complete for known vitamin and mineral essentials. 2. There is a great difference in the biological value even of animal protein concentrates. 3. Soybean meal produced a better growth rate than any of the other plant concentrates used. Cottonseed meal proved to have a greater growth-promoting value than did linseed oil meal. 4. The supplementing values of protein concentrates, one to another, is not quite as evident as one would expect if the …

Inheritance In A Wheat Cross Of Ridit X Utac, C. Leland Dalley May 1931

Inheritance In A Wheat Cross Of Ridit X Utac, C. Leland Dalley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Present-day plant breeding, on the foundation made many years ago, has achieved important scientific and economic results. By means of introductions and selections, superior strains such as Turkey and Kanred have been obtained. Through hybridization new combinations of characters result, combining desirable characters of different plant types in a single individual. In this program, wheat hybridization has occupied a worthy place.

Each year a number of wheat crosses are made at the Utah Experiment Station, the main purpose of which is to develop superior strains of wheat. Such an economic program is aided and hastened by studies in genetic behavior. …

Inheritance Of Glume And Kernel Color, Of Awnedness, And Of Spike Density In A Cross Between Ridit And Sevier Wheat, Leslie W. Nelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper is devoted principally to the presentation and discussion of the results obtained when certain contrasting characters were brought together in a wheat cross between Ridit and Sevier 59. this is one of the crosses made in an attempt to develop a wheat adapted to this region with the following desirable qualities: Bunt resistance, strong straw, hard kernels, and heavy yield. How near this ideal is approached in succeeding generations can be told only by extensive tests. The genetic study herein presented was made to hasten the time when some of the progeny of this cross may become of …

Genetic Study Of Certain Spike And Floral Characters In Barley, Dwight Koonce

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Due to the commercial importance of barley many hybridization studies have been prosecuted in an effort to produce superior economic strains. While the economic breeding is still important, at present there is considerable scientific interest int he inheritance of the characters and in the location of the genes in the different linkage groups.

A Study Of Different Methods Of Applying Ammonium Sulfate Alone And In A Complete Fertilizer, Clarence Burnham May 1931

A Study Of Different Methods Of Applying Ammonium Sulfate Alone And In A Complete Fertilizer, Clarence Burnham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The beneficial effects obtained from the application of farmyard manure to the soil have long been known in Utah, but now the point has apparently been reached where it becomes evident that the supply of manure is hardly adequate in some sections where intensive cropping is practiced. The use of commercial fertilizers to increase crop yields is a new practice in Utah agriculture as is shown in Table 1 from an estimate made from data kindly furnished by the Columbia Steel Company, Anaconda Copper Mining Company, Ford Motor Company, Armour Packing Company, and Porter Walton Company.

The early sales in …

Circular No. 93 - Better Sugar-Beet Culture For Utah, George Stewart, D. W. Pittman Apr 1931

Circular No. 93 - Better Sugar-Beet Culture For Utah, George Stewart, D. W. Pittman

UAES Circulars

Utah was one of the first states to begin sugar-beet growing. The industry grew rapidly, favored by the climate, by the naturally productive soils, by the freedom from pests, and by the system of intensive irrigation agriculture. California and Utah were among the leading beet-producing states at the time of the World War, and under the stimulus of high prices they remained so until the great depression of 1920. After that, the frequent occurrence of curly-top and the rapid spread of nematode, together with the low price resulting from increased cane sugar production in the tropics and from other causes …

Bulletin No. 225 - Progress Report: Carbon County Experimental Farm, 1927-30, Inclusive, I. D. Zobell, George Stewart Apr 1931

Bulletin No. 225 - Progress Report: Carbon County Experimental Farm, 1927-30, Inclusive, I. D. Zobell, George Stewart

UAES Bulletins

The agricultural problems of the Carbon County Experimental Farm and of the locality which it serves are distinctly different from those of most of the farming localities of Utah. The low and uncertain winter rainfall, the comparative "rawness" of the soils, together with their almost infinite stickiness when wet, and the presence of considerable alkali throughout their body makes them peculiarly sensitive to time and manner of treatment and causes them to absorb water slowly and to erode readily.

Circular No. 92 - Torrential Floods In Northern Utah Jan 1931

Circular No. 92 - Torrential Floods In Northern Utah

UAES Circulars

On account of the recurring nature and the destructive character of the floods which have devastated property in Davis County and elsewhere in recent years, it appeared advisable to make a special study of the situation, I, therefore, in 1930, appointed a commission of citizens whom I deemed especially qualified, including practical engineers, geologists, foresters, and stockmen, asking them "to study the origin and cause of floods in Davis County and other parts of the state, and to ascertain whether any flood prevention measures are feasible".

Certain Cultural Characteristics Of Digitalis Pupurea, (Linne) With A Proposed Chemical Assay, Clark W, Eidsmoe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since its introduction into modern medicine digitalis has occupied a very important position in our material medica. Its widespread use as a remedy in conditions of failing heart, and its effectiveness as a diuretic in certain dropsical conditions have gained for it a reputation which is equaled by few other drugs. The opinion of pharmacologiate and physicians as to its mode of action and its field of clinical usefulness has been revised a number of times, and there is much diversity of teaching as to its use in special ailments. Among some workers there is a tendency to restrict its …

The Spleen Considered With Special Reference To Its Functions, Louis J. Schmidt Jan 1931

The Spleen Considered With Special Reference To Its Functions, Louis J. Schmidt

Bachelors’ Theses

In arranging this thesis an attempt has been made to show that by virtue of its embryology, anatomy and histology, the spleen is the better enabled to carry out its alleged functions. The discussion here presented is confined to a story of the functions of the mammalian spleen alone. The similarities in the reactions of the spleen in the various mammalia is quite evident. Experimentation and observations were carried out on the lower mammalia while only the reactions of the splenectomized humans could be observed.

The Spleen: With Special Reference To Its Origin And Comparative Morphology, Morris Aaron Gilbert Jan 1931

The Spleen: With Special Reference To Its Origin And Comparative Morphology, Morris Aaron Gilbert

Bachelors’ Theses

Throughout the ages the spleen has been an object of the most active curiosity. The opinion that the spleen is unnecessary and of no use to the individual has prevailed with an uninterrupted succession in the World in all ages. In Persia, many centuries ago, in the reign of Abouserous it was a custom to splenectomize the horses that were kept to carry the King’s dispatches, in order to give them more agility and swifter feet. The great Aristotle thought the spleen to be a sort of spurious liver planted in the left side to correspond to the liver in …

Circular No. 90 - Swine Production In Utah, Harry H. Smith Nov 1930

Circular No. 90 - Swine Production In Utah, Harry H. Smith

UAES Circulars

During the last 20 years there has been a marked change in the type of hogs from the short-legged, wide-bodied or "hot-blood" type to a longer, somewhat more narrow-bodied, "leggier" type. For development of size in hogs they must have (1) length and depth of body, (2) length of leg, and (3) large but not coarse bones. The long-bodied rather "leggy" pig grows rapidly and makes the larger hog. While the modern hog is still a lard hog, it is not as thick and broad as were its predecessors. It is logical to assume that the hog of the future …

Circular No. 85 - Chlorosis Yellowing Of Plants: Cause And Control, F. B. Wann May 1930

Circular No. 85 - Chlorosis Yellowing Of Plants: Cause And Control, F. B. Wann

UAES Circulars

Chlorosis is a disease of plants, the characteristic symptom of which is the yellowing of the leaves. The disease is of sporadic but widespread distribution in Utah and the aggregate losses caused by it are undoubtedly greater than those of any other one disease. Not only are many plants killed, or weakened to such an extent that only inferior crops are produced, but many areas of land which might otherwise support profitable orchards have been abandoned or planted to other crops because of the disease.

The Symptoms Of Spindle Tuber And Unmottled Curly Dwarf Of The Potato, R. W. Goss May 1930

The Symptoms Of Spindle Tuber And Unmottled Curly Dwarf Of The Potato, R. W. Goss

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The differentiation of the virus diseases of the potato on the basis of symptoms is an important but difficult phase of the virus problem. A knowledge of the variation in symptoms due to environmental factors is necessary both in investigational work and in the practical application of our knowledge to the control of these diseases in the field. A fairly comprehensive knowledge of the masking effect of certain environmental factors upon the symptoms of the mosaic group has been obtained through the work of various investigators. Considerably less information is available concerning the effect of environment upon the symptoms of …

It has been the object of the author to present in this thesis the chemical composition of the eggs of the duck and the goose, the chemical composition of the abdominal adipose connective tissue, the fat constants of the visceral fat of the goose, the egg-yolk fat of the goose and duck, and the subcutaneous fat of the goose.

Swine Sanitation, L. Van Es Mar 1930

Swine Sanitation, L. Van Es

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

From the very beginning of Nebraska's agricultural development its farmers have recognized that the production of swine must of necessity accompany the growing of corn. The latter, one of the state's most important staples, cannot be marketed in a more economical manner than after having been transformed into pork, bacon, and lard. As a result the state has for many years maintained a rather dense swine population mainly divided into large herds kept on relatively small areas of land. This density of population, as well as certain practices in management and selective breeding, has brought about conditions favorable for the …

Circular No. 84 - Building Young Deciduous Fruit Trees, Francis M. Coe Feb 1930

Circular No. 84 - Building Young Deciduous Fruit Trees, Francis M. Coe

UAES Circulars

The modern fruit tree in a commercial orchard, to survive in present-day competition, must bear heavy crops. The mechanical strength which determines whether it can hold its heavy load successfully or whether it will be broken down and become a liability to its owner is determined to a large extent by the training it has received the first two or three years after planting.
