Unraveling The Ties That Bind: How Dobbs And Loper Bright Might Reconfigure American Party Politics, Gregory A. Elinson Jan 2025

Unraveling The Ties That Bind: How Dobbs And Loper Bright Might Reconfigure American Party Politics, Gregory A. Elinson

College of Law Faculty Publications

What happens to partisan politics when long-standing doctrinal equilibria are upended? In search of answers, this essay engages in an extended comparison of two recent landmark Supreme Court rulings: Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overruled Roe v. Wade, and Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, which overruled Chevron USA v. Natural Resources Defense Council.

It begins with the observation that opposition to abortion and judicial deference on the right, and support for abortion and judicial deference on the left, helped unite the major party coalitions, forging durable alliances among elected officials, organized interests, donors, activists, …

An Intelligent Robotic System For Multi-Sensory Cognitive Fatigue Detection To Assist Persons With Paralysis In Activities Of Daily Living, Enamul Karim

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Assistive robotics is a promising area for improving the quality of life of people with paralysis, specifically through assistance in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Current state-of-the-art assistive robotic systems do not have the capability to dynamically modulate their functionality according to the cognitive fatigue level of the user, which can negatively impact their effectiveness and usability in real-life settings.

This dissertation explores an adaptive robotic framework that adjusts its behavior depending on the cognitive fatigue level of users. The system operates in three different modes, and switches between Fully Controlled, Semi-Autonomous, and Fully Autonomous modes. The overall goal is …

Exploring Emerging Memory Technologies For Enhancing Data Center Applications, Zhen Lin Jan 2025

Exploring Emerging Memory Technologies For Enhancing Data Center Applications, Zhen Lin

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The rapid evolution of memory and storage technologies is fundamentally reshaping the design of operating systems and data management. Emerging devices such as persistent memory, NVMe SSDs, and Compute Express Link (CXL)--enabled hybrid memory modules introduce new opportunities for high-performance, cost-efficient data management, yet they also expose limitations in traditional software abstractions. File systems, originally designed for slow block-based devices, incur excessive overhead on ultra-low-latency media, while block-level caches suffer from metadata and eviction inefficiencies. Moreover, hardware-managed tiering provides transparency but restricts adaptability across workloads. These challenges highlight the need to rethink caching and tiered memory management across multiple system …

Housing Sexual Harassment: A Department Of Justice Case Study, Rigel C. Oliveri Jan 2025

Housing Sexual Harassment: A Department Of Justice Case Study, Rigel C. Oliveri

Faculty Publications

Sexual harassment in housing-when tenants or prospective tenants are sexually harassed by their landlords, housing providers, or other people associated with their housing-is a clear national problem. In 2019 the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced an initiative to bring attention to this issue, as well as a shared commitment to increased enforcement against harassers.

This enforcement push provides an opportunity for study. In particular, there are now a significant number of complaints and other litigation documents posted to the DOJ's website that provide a convenient and robust sample for analysis. The …

Scratching Behavior Of Copper-Niobium Nanolaminates, Matthew C. Peterson Jan 2025

Scratching Behavior Of Copper-Niobium Nanolaminates, Matthew C. Peterson

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Metal nanolaminates are known in material science for their unique mechanical properties and high strength due to their interface behavior. Cu/Nb nanolaminates specifically are studied for their uses in electronics due to their good conductivity and superior tensile strength compared to copper conductors, as well as their radiation resistance in radioactive environments. Currently, most molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of Cu/Nb simulations are axially loaded. This work attempts to characterize the scratching behavior of Cu/Nb nanolaminates with varying indenter size, temperature, speed, and layer thickness. The coefficient of friction (CoF), friction force, normal force, and material removal were then compared. A …

The Effects Of A History Of Child Trauma On Breastfeeding Outcomes, Emily Flynn Jan 2025

The Effects Of A History Of Child Trauma On Breastfeeding Outcomes, Emily Flynn

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Breastfeeding provides significant health benefits for both parent and child, yet many parents discontinue earlier than recommended. While childhood sexual abuse has been associated with breastfeeding difficulties, limited research has examined the broader effects of other forms of childhood maltreatments on breastfeeding outcomes. This cross-sectional study examined the relationship between a history of childhood trauma and breastfeeding outcomes, with social support explored as a potential moderator. Participants (n = 194) were birthing parents of children under the age of five, recruited from online parenting communities. Measures included the Adverse Childhood Experience International Questionnaire (ACE-IQ), a breastfeeding duration item, and a …

Journal Articles: Anesthesiology

Approximately 1 in 10 U.S. newborns are born preterm (< 37 weeks of gestation), facing risks of low birth weight, respiratory and birth deficits often requiring surgery, mechanical ventilation, and prolonged sedation. Such long-term exposure to sedatives in these babies can potentially pose neurodevelopmental risks and can further impact changes later in life. The present study focused on midazolam (MDZ), a benzodiazepine class drug commonly used as sedative in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Using a robust preclinical rodent model mimicking chronic MDZ exposure, we did a comprehensive characterization on the phenotypic, molecular, biochemical, and behavioral outcomes in these exposed neonates across key developmental milestones. Our findings indicate that long-term MDZ exposure during the neonatal period negatively affects physical attributes in early childhood. While adult bodyweights between control and MDZ-exposed rats remain comparable, the MDZ rats exhibit accelerated and robust weight gain, potentially indicating a predisposition for binge eating behavior. Additionally, dopamine release in MDZ-exposed rats is markedly reduced in adulthood. Elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors in the brain during adulthood suggest a shift in development due to early MDZ exposure. Further, trends of heightened anxiety-like behavior and reduced social interaction during early adolescence compared to other stages were observed. Collectively, our study provides a comprehensive assessment of how long-term MDZ exposure during neonatal stages impacts outcomes throughout life, laying the foundation for understanding mechanisms that contribute to neurodevelopmental complications associated with long-term MDZ use in neonates.

AZD-9574 is one of these promising PARP1 selective inhibitors with good blood-brain barrier permeability that is currently in clinical trials for the treatment of solid malignancies and previous research attributed its selectivity and efficacy to the presence of a piperazine ring linker in its structure. However, a structure-activity relationship conducted …

Developing Stiripentol Analogs As Potential Ldh Inhibitors For The Treatment Of Glioblastoma, Anshika Y. Jain Jan 2025

Developing Stiripentol Analogs As Potential Ldh Inhibitors For The Treatment Of Glioblastoma, Anshika Y. Jain

Theses and Dissertations

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly proliferative brain tumor that has a 5-year survival rate of ~7 %. Temozolomide (TMZ) is the current standard of care therapeutic for GBM. However, 50% of patients develop resistance to TMZ. Therefore, further investigation for new GBM therapeutics is necessary to overcome this issue of drug resistance. GBM patients are known to overexpress lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), which is inversely correlated with their survival. This key glycolytic enzyme catalyzes the interconversion of pyruvate and lactate and plays an important role in cancer proliferation and invasion. Therefore, we aimed to inhibit LDH for developing therapeutics for …

Implementing Rsa Accumulators For Asynchronous And Permissionless Reliable Broadcasting, Eric Webb Jan 2025

Implementing Rsa Accumulators For Asynchronous And Permissionless Reliable Broadcasting, Eric Webb

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Asynchronous consensus protocols are essential for decentralized and trustless environments such as decentralized finance (DeFi), supply chain management, and voting systems. These protocols eliminate centralized authority and timing assumptions while improving resilience and security. However, as network sizes increase the communication overhead in these systems becomes a bottleneck that limits scalability and efficiency. One notable example is the Aleph protocol, which stands out as one of the first consensus protocols to be both asynchronous and permissionless while providing Byzantine Fault Tolerance. Unlike many existing asynchronous consensus mechanisms, Aleph is permissionless in nature and does not rely on a trusted dealer …

Introduction: Medicare beneficiaries who received an annual wellness visit (AWV) were noted to have reduced Medicare spending. Review of Medical City North Hills Internal Medicine Clinic data showed that 44% of eligible patients received an AWV. Improper documentation and coding were the primary reasons eligible AWVs were not accounted for even though they were performed. Majority of incomplete documentation was missing information regarding patient’s functional ability, level of safety, home safety, and activities of daily living. The information is normally obtained from a questionnaire completed by the patient prior to the visit. Questionnaire was noted by residents to be unorganized …

There’S A Qr Code For That: Trauma Performance Improvement, Patient Safety, And Peer Review, April Miller, Luis Taveras, Elizabeth Kim, Kathy Galt

North Texas Research Forum 2025

In preparation for our facility’s initial ACS verification visit, a Trauma Consultative Site visit in 2021 identified the need for a streamlined process to communicate issues to the Trauma Program that were recognized during patient care. This was especially true on weekends and nights when issues were most likely to occur. A recent literature review revealed implementation of electronic communication tools increased reporting of performance improvement and patient safety (PIPS) events and improved tracking and resolution of events. The authors of that study used a virtual chatroom accessible from cell phone to post PIPS events. One perceived drawback to this …

Workarounds In American Public Law, Daniel A. Farber, Jonathan S. Gould, Matthew C. Stephenson Jan 2025

Workarounds In American Public Law, Daniel A. Farber, Jonathan S. Gould, Matthew C. Stephenson

Faculty Articles

A workaround is a maneuver that seems, on its face, consistent with the formal rules, but that employs those rules in an unanticipated way to circumvent a legal obstacle. Though some workarounds are tolerated or even celebrated, workarounds (and proposed workarounds) often provoke instinctive skepticism or hostility. When, if ever, is such skepticism justified? Do workarounds raise distinctive legal or public policy concerns? This Article seeks to provide a systematic normative assessment of workarounds in American public law. We argue, first, that from a general public interest perspective, the desirability of a workaround depends primarily on the desirability of the …

The Political Question Of Public Lands, Ryan A. Semerad Jan 2025

The Political Question Of Public Lands, Ryan A. Semerad

Wyoming Law Review

The Property Clause of Article IV of the United States Constitution provides: “Congress shall have Power to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States.” Thus, among other things, the Constitution assigns the disposal of federally owned lands to Congress alone. That means the other branches of the federal government, including the courts, have no jurisdiction to exercise this power or to compel Congress to use it. Put another way, when Congress does not dispose of public lands through sale or transfer, that inaction is not subject to …
