Some Economic Aspects Of The Fluid Milk Industry Of Nebraska, Kenneth E. Anderson Jun 1951

Some Economic Aspects Of The Fluid Milk Industry Of Nebraska, Kenneth E. Anderson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Most citizens of Nebraska, especially the dairy farmers who produced milk for city consumption, are currently concerned with the problem of marketing fluid milk.In Nebraska and all over the United States, sales of wholesale milk farmers have been increasing for the past 15 years, while cream sales to creameries have been decreasing.

Production of milk in Nebraska is greatest in the eastern part of the state.Likewise, consumption is concentrated in Eastern Nebraska. This is most likely due to Eastern Nebraska’s highly concentrated population as well as the most favorable farm conditions for dairy cows.

Most of the bottled milk in …

Stratigraphy Of The Woodbine And Eagle Ford, Waco Area, Texas, W. S. Adkins, Frank E. Lozo May 1951

Stratigraphy Of The Woodbine And Eagle Ford, Waco Area, Texas, W. S. Adkins, Frank E. Lozo

Fondren Science Series

In the last twenty years, very little detailed stratigraphy of this area has been published. Meanwhile there have been significant advances in this field: the aims of modern stratigraphic research have been somewhat clarified; much new information pertinent to the stratigraphy of this area has been accumulated from the study of other areas; and a considerable amount of detailed information on the surface and subsurface geology of this area has come to light as a result of detailed outcrop work, extensive drilling of oil tests and water wells, and new techniques of bore-hole logging. The scope of this work is …

The Grand Prairies Of Texas, Frank Bryan May 1951

The Grand Prairies Of Texas, Frank Bryan

Fondren Science Series

Welcome to the Grand Prairies of Central Texas. They were first so called by that grand old man of early Texas geology, Dr. Robert T. Hill. These prairies offer no spectacular, breath-taking landmarks to the viewing eye. They offer only a broad vista of rolling prairie hills. Yet this can be a thrilling vista, once you know the details of its history back into remote antiquity.

History Of Discovery And Development Of Woodbine Oil Fields In East Texas, C. I. Alexander May 1951

History Of Discovery And Development Of Woodbine Oil Fields In East Texas, C. I. Alexander

Fondren Science Series

The purpose of this paper is to present a brief historical summary of the discovery and development of the Woodbine oil fields of East Texas. A simple listing, or tabulation of the Woodbine oil fields, with discovery dates, would be dry reading, indeed, so I will try to review the history of this important oil producing formation and area as a story - a story of lines or trends of geological thought, of lease plays and exploratory operations resulting from these lines or trends of thought; and of the changes in geological thought resulting from some of the more important …

Stratigraphic Notes On The Maness (Comanche Cretaceous) Shale, Frank E. Lozo May 1951

Stratigraphic Notes On The Maness (Comanche Cretaceous) Shale, Frank E. Lozo

Fondren Science Series

In 1941, the writer was advised of the opinions of T. L. Bailey, F. G. Evans, W. S. Adkins, and other geologists of the Shell Oil Company on the stratigraphic position of the uppermost Comanche shale unit recognized in the subsurface of eastern Texas. Their studies pointed to the conclusion that this unit, now known as the Maness shale, is (1) stratigraphically younger than the subsurface Del Rio (or Grayson) shale with which it usually had been correlated, and (2) conformably overlies the Buda limestone, at this date generally misidentified as the Georgetown limestone. An investigation of the controversial sequence …

An Ecological Study Of The Utah Sculpin Cottus Bairdi Semiscaber In Logan River, Utah, William Merle Zarbock

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The study of the Utah sculpin Cottus bairdi semiscaber, or Rocky Mountain bullhead as it is known locally on Logan River, Utah, is primarily one of determining its relation to game fish. Field work for this study began in 1949 and continued to March of 1951. Numbers of the Utah sculpin on Logan River have been estimated to be as high as 150 per tenth mile of stream. The larger populations are in the area of the third impoundment on Logan River and downstream.

The Effect Of Common Contaminants On Cheese Starter, Ivan R. Miller May 1951

The Effect Of Common Contaminants On Cheese Starter, Ivan R. Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Starter is the "heart" of the cheese making industry. Only by proper handling of starter can good quality cheese be made. The economic loss from contaminated starter may prove disastrous to a cheese plant if proper corrective measures are not taken.

Milk usually contains a variety of bacteria. Under plant conditions some of these bacteria get into the mother starter or bulk starter unless extreme caution is used. Comparatively little is known about how one organism influences another when grown in milk. This problem is important in the cheese industry.

An Annotated Bibliography Of North American Upper Cretaceous Corals, 1785-1950, Bob F. Perkins Apr 1951

An Annotated Bibliography Of North American Upper Cretaceous Corals, 1785-1950, Bob F. Perkins

Fondren Science Series

Although more than one hundred species of corals have been described from the Upper Cretaceous formations of North America, there has been no attempt, to date, to compile a bibliographic index of the species. The author feels that such an index would be useful to paleontologists in future identifications. The following bibliography includes a list, with annotations, of all available literature on North American corals of Upper Cretaceous age; a catalogue of genera and species; and a plate showing the distribution of species.

The Desert Shall Blossom As The Rose, D. Wynne Thorne Apr 1951

The Desert Shall Blossom As The Rose, D. Wynne Thorne

Faculty Honor Lectures

IRRIGATION AGRICULTURE has not received attention commensurate with its significance in either ancient or modem times. Although most ancient civilizations depended on irrigation for their very existence, one can consult volume after volume of history only to find irrigation scarcely mentioned. To the agricultural specialist the great challenge and the strength and weakness of irrigation agriculture is not in constructing Boulder Dams nor in planning winding canals and syphons to carry water from the Columbia River to California. The critical point is on the farms where water is applied to the soil and crops are harvested. There the real battles …

Hindeastraea Discoidea White From The Eagle Ford Shale, Dallas County, Texas, Bob F. Perkins Apr 1951

Hindeastraea Discoidea White From The Eagle Ford Shale, Dallas County, Texas, Bob F. Perkins

Fondren Science Series

In 1888 Charles White made Hindeastraea discoidea the type of a new genus of Cretaceous coral. The type specimen was reported to have been collected from the Ripley (Navarro) formation near Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas. The next year Robert T. Hill reported what he considered to be the same species in the shales at Eagle Ford, Dallas County, Texas. The note was not accompanied by a description, and the corals were referred incorrectly to the genus lsastrea. Although the occurrence of these corals in the Eagle Ford has been known to many collectors other than Hill, there has been no …

The North Texas Species Of Heterotheca, Including Chrysopsis (Compositae), Lloyd H. Shinners Apr 1951

The North Texas Species Of Heterotheca, Including Chrysopsis (Compositae), Lloyd H. Shinners

Field and Laboratory

The species of Chrysopsis of the United States and Mexico fall into strikingly heterogeneous groups. One, with slender, parallel-veined leaves and sericeous pubescence (C. graminifolia and allies), was treated by Nuttall (the original author of Chrysopsis itself) under Pityopsis. Another, with shorter or broader net-veined leaves and long, soft pubescence (C. gossypina and allies) has traditionally been regarded as typical Chrysopsis. Species of both groups are characterized by having conspicuous rays, and double pappus in all florets.

Geology Of The Eagle Ford Quadrangle, Dallas County, Texas, William Louis Turner Apr 1951

Geology Of The Eagle Ford Quadrangle, Dallas County, Texas, William Louis Turner

Field and Laboratory

The Eagle Ford quadrangle includes an area of 62 square miles in western Dallas County. It is bounded by the parallels 32°45'00" and 32°52'30" N, and by the meridians 96°52'30" and 97°00'00" W. The towns of Irving and Eagle Ford are in the area, as are portions of Grand Prairie and Arcadia Park. A network of paved highways and graveled roads makes most of the quadrangle readily accessible by automobile. Physiographically, this area is part of the Black Prairie, a province of low relief in which the landscape has been largely shaped by running water. West and Elm forks of …

The North Texas Species Of Hymenocallis (Amaryllidaceae), Lloyd H. Shinners

Field and Laboratory

The only recent descriptive account of the United States species of Hymenocallis is that by Small in his Manual of the Southeastern Flora (1933: several corrections of nomenclature are given by Morton, 1935). None of the 11 species there given is credited to Texas.

Bulletin No. 350 - Cemeteries Of Box Elder And Summit Counties, Joseph A. Geddes, Carmen Fredrickson Jan 1951

Bulletin No. 350 - Cemeteries Of Box Elder And Summit Counties, Joseph A. Geddes, Carmen Fredrickson

UAES Bulletins

One of man's greatest challenges is to build institutions that adequately meet basic needs. A cemetery is a social institution invented to take care of needs related to the dead.

Times and conditions change. A design which seemed adequate when initiated may soon become archaic and out-moded if it is not modified in the light of new discoveries.

This study raises many issues about cemeteries. As one reads the bulletin many questions concerning the nature and function of other institutions arise. What is their condition in contrast with the cemeteries?

This publication, the first in an institution series planned by …

Cinderella Furniture, Isabel Mcgibney Jan 1951

Cinderella Furniture, Isabel Mcgibney

SDSU Extension Circulars

With an elaborate gilt coach that had once been a pumpkin, and glass slippers that didn't disclose their former identity, a common colorless girl became a famous storybook beauty. With a wave of the magic legendary wand, the good fairy transformed the unattractive into the desirable, the ugly into the beautiful and the rundown into the useful. Today a woman is her own fairy. The magic wand that makes the old as good as new is imagination, ingenuity and know-how. Like the two chairs on the cover that Mrs. Homemaker proudly shows her family, the unattractive chair has completely changed …

The Affect Of Indole-3-Acetic Acid On The Fission Rate Of Paramecium Caudatum, Margherita L. Baker Jan 1951

The Affect Of Indole-3-Acetic Acid On The Fission Rate Of Paramecium Caudatum, Margherita L. Baker

Student Scholarship

This research report, authored by Margherita L. Baker in 1951, investigates the physiological effects of the plant growth hormone indole-3-acetic acid, also known as heteroauxin, on the fission rate of the protozoan Paramecium caudatum. The study is grounded in the hypothesis that if plant hormones can influence animal growth, it suggests a fundamental similarity in the growth mechanisms between the two kingdoms. The experimental procedure was divided into two distinct series to observe how varying environmental conditions and food availability influenced the hormonal impact.

In the first series, paramecia were maintained in a nutrient-rich beef extract medium with an abundant …
