Inheritance Studies Of A Wheat Cross To Six Races Of Covered Smut, Douglas R. Dewey
Inheritance Studies Of A Wheat Cross To Six Races Of Covered Smut, Douglas R. Dewey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Covered smut is a fungus disease that has caused serious losses of wheat for centuries. Its origin is not known, but it was well known to early Romans as evidenced by the fact that they had a god, Robigus, whose special work was to watch over crops to "avert the mildew" (45). It is often referred to as "bunt" or "stinking smut of wheat". Throughout this paper the term "bunt" will be used to designate this disease in order to avoid confusing it with other smuts of wheat.
Bunt is worldwide in its distribution, but it is especially prevalent in …

Marketing Aspects Of Cattle Finishing Operations Major Cattle Finishing Areas Of Utah, 1951-52, Robert L. Fulton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
On January 1, 1952, 50,000 head of cattle were on feed for slaughter in the state of Utah (6). This was an increase over previous years. The average number of cattle on feed for slaughter January 1st during the 1948-52 period was 45,000 head. This number was 30 percent larger than the average number on feed during the 1943-47 period. As shown in figure 1, the number of cattle on feed has fluctuated from year to year. The years with the least number of cattle on feed were those in the early thirties during the depression and drought. Since 1936 …

Weed Control Investigations On Some Important Aquatic Plants Which Impede Flow Of Western Irrigation Water, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation
Elusive Documents
During the past 50 years, the acreage of land placed under irrigation in the western United States has increased greatly to meet the growing demand for food and fiber production. To provide this water for crop production it is necessary not only for river waters to be impounded and irrigation canal distribution systems established but also for the irrigation waterways to be free of obstructing plant growths which impede the flow of water. This requires various types of weed control measures in order that originally designed carrying capacities of the waterways may be maintained. Methods involving new techniques developed mostly …

Fertilizer Recommendations For S.D. Crops, Leo F. Puhr, Fred E. Shubeck, Leonard L. Ladd, Merle E. Switzer
SDSU Extension Circulars
The use of fertilizer is rapidly becoming recognized as an essential part of a good soil management program. Fertilizers, however, are not a substitute for other well established soil management practices. A good rotation is the foundation of a sound fertility and soil building program. Commercial fertilizer should be used to correct the plant food deficiencies that normally occur under our best soil management systems. It should be emphasized that the fullest use be made of legumes and grasses, crop residues and. manure to maintain the organic matter supply of the soil and to reduce the amount of fertilizer required …
Agricultural Production Trends In South Dakota, Robert J. Antonides
Agricultural Production Trends In South Dakota, Robert J. Antonides
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
Many South Dakotans who are concerned with agriculture in the State have been interested in obtaining some means of comparing agricultural production over the years. Total income from agricultural products sold gives a very rough estimate of trends, but does not take into account the many other farm products which are not sold but used on the farm. The indexes presented here account for all of the output of the farms of South Dakota with the exception of some very minor crops and farm gardens. The present study is the first attempt to combine all of the various types of …

It is the intention of this publication to briefly discuss the equipment that goes into a pumping plant. By so ding, potential users of this equipment will have some indication of the operating costs of the various units as well as the type of equipment that is best suited to his particular conditions.
The Loss Of Some Strength Characteristics Of Coated Magazine Paper As A Result Of Exposure To Elevated Temperatures, Hugh D. Burnie
The Loss Of Some Strength Characteristics Of Coated Magazine Paper As A Result Of Exposure To Elevated Temperatures, Hugh D. Burnie
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Introduction
The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect that varying degrees of temperature have on the strength properties of coated magazine stock. Paper of this type encounters high temperature conditions primarily in the ink drying operations following the printing of the web. The strength with which the paper meets the cutting, folding and binding methods which follow the drying operation are of paramount importance to the printer. Throughout the work, attempts were made to assimilate conditions encountered in present day commercial practice.

Plankton Studies Of The Tomales Bay, California, Andrew William Mcclain
Plankton Studies Of The Tomales Bay, California, Andrew William Mcclain
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
These studies on the plankton of Tomales Bay were designed to determine the effects of such physical factors as tides, temperatures, salinities and sunshine on the quantities of various types of organisms, and to obtain a more comprehensive picture of estuarine life at the Pacific Marine Station. The studies were begun in the summer of 1948 and continued through the summer of 1953.
Although various studies have been conducted on different aspects of marine plankton, the only general treatments of the subject of which the writer is aware are those of Johnstone (1924), Ricketts and Calvin (1951), Sproaton (1949) and …

North American Prairie, J. E. Weaver
North American Prairie, J. E. Weaver
Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)
TO MOST AMERICANS, the word "Prairie" suggests either a romantic element in pioneer fiction or a vast expanse of level land which must be crossed in going from one coast to another. But to the botanist, the American Prairie is a wonderfully complex society of living organisms.
This book tells the story of that society-the variety of its inhabitants; the constitution of its several communities; the internal struggles for domination of the society; and the battles of the Prairie as a whole against its two most vicious enemies, drought and overgrazing. Most striking, perhaps, is the story of that portion …

Fat Separation In Evaporated Milk. Iii. Gravity Separation And Heat Stability, R. B. Maxcy, H. H. Sommer
Fat Separation In Evaporated Milk. Iii. Gravity Separation And Heat Stability, R. B. Maxcy, H. H. Sommer
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Fat separation is a continuous problem in the production, handling, and storage of evaporated milk. This defect becomes most objectionable during prolonged quiescent storage at high temperatures. The butterfat rises to the upper surface forming a viscous, leathery layer, which may prevent pouring of the milk from a relatively small opening.
To retard fat separation, the manufacturer attempts to obtain effective homogenization and sufficient coagulation of the proteins during sterilization to give the product a high viscosity or "heavy body" (1, 12, 14). These practical applications are aimed at three fundamental considerations: a reduction in the size of the fat …

Fat Separation In Evaporated Milk I. Homogenization, Separation, And Viscosity Tests, R. B. Maxcy, H. H. Sommer
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
The rising of fat in evaporated milk on prolonged storage will inevitably occur since the density of the fat particles is lower than that of the concentrated milk plasma in which they are suspended. It has been shown that the velocity of rise of individual fat globules in milk plasma is in good agreement with the velocity as predicated by Stokes' law (5). Troy and Sharp (7) also found the velocity of rise of globule clusters in general agreement with this law. Their observations on clusters were less precise, however, because of inherent complications arising from the irregularities in the …

Biological Factors Involved In The Absenteeism Of Children From Stockton Public Schools, Fae-Belle Coudeyre
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Every state has a compulsory school attendance law, and yet at any time during the school year approximately 12 percent of the children will not be in school - cannot very well be in school, because of some physical, mental, or emotional handicap, either temporary or permanent.
These absentees are what are now often called the “exceptional” children, including the blind and partially-blind, the deaf and hard-of-hearing, the speech-defective, the crippled, the delicate, the epileptic, the mentally deficient, those with serious social maladjustments, together with those who are temporarily out of school because of a disease or accident. The total …
