The selectivity of acetylene hydrogenation by the Rh single-atom catalyst (SAC) supported on HY zeolite was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and a 5/83T quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) embedded cluster model. The calculated activation barrier (ΔG‡) for the oxidative addition of dihydrogen to the Rh metal center (15.9 kcal/mol) is lower in energy than that for the σ-bond metathesis of dihydrogen to the Rh—C bond (22.7 kcal/mol) and the Rh—O bond (28.4 kcal/mol). The activation barriers of the oxidative addition of subsequent dihydrogen molecules are significantly higher than that of the oxidative addition of the first dihydrogen molecule. These …

Adult-onset asthma, notably prevalent among healthcare professionals, especially nurses, is often attributed to occupational factors such as exposure to cleaning agents. Studies consistently underscore the substantial role of such exposure in work-related asthma among hospital staff. We aimed to (a) identify and characterize current practices in cleaning and aerosolized medication administration; (b) assess changes in practices since a similar 2003 study of Texas healthcare workers; and (c) identify factors contributing to diverse exposures within healthcare job categories. We conducted focus groups with 38 participants in 6 healthcare settings, analyzing current practices, changes since 2003, and factors contributing to exposure diversity. …

Expert opinion about dangerousness—the risk of reoffending—is commonly introduced at sentencing, criminal commitment proceedings, and some types of pretrial detention hearings. This Essay argues that the rules governing the admissibility of scientific evidence should apply to this testimony and that, on that assumption, such evidence must be (1) “material” (logically relevant, empirically generalizable, and epistemologically germane), (2) “probative” (a measure of accuracy, which is more stringent when the evidence is from an expert), (3) helpful to the factfinder (through promoting “incremental validity”), and (4) presented in a non-prejudicial manner (i.e., in a way that minimizes the possibility it will be …

Workplace Dignity, Joseph A. Seiner
Workplace Dignity, Joseph A. Seiner
William & Mary Law Review
There is a fundamental lack of respect for workers and work. The evisceration of the dignity of work has infected all industries. Anecdotally, workers have been forced to urinate in bottles. Employees have been killed while working through a tornado. A well-known employer allegedly subjected women to jokes of “sex, defecation, masturbation, rape, and torture.” Empirically, studies demonstrate the persistence of gender harassment in employment, the mistreatment of workers with long COVID, and a wide range of child labor and safety violations. No group is immune from the abuse that has been devastating to minority workers and vulnerable populations.

This Is An Intervention: The Role Of Federal Courts In Suppressing Non-Compete Agreements, Anya Y. Karaman
William & Mary Law Review
Part I of this Note will provide background information on noncompete agreements, focusing primarily on those executed in conjunction with employment. Part I will also provide background on the FTC’s rule and the preliminary injunction analysis. Part II will explore how different jurisdictions treat the public interest factor when analyzing whether to enforce a non-compete. Part III will examine how the FTC’s rule has already impacted the public interest analysis in court. Finally, Part IV will address potential challenges to this proposal and argue why federal courts—as opposed to state legislatures, for example—are in the best position to protect workers …

Trends In Terrorism Recruitment: Examining Recruitment Patterns Among 250 Armed Groups Using Terrorism, Evan Perkoski, Meredith Maloof Loken, Alec Worsnop
Reports, Projects, and Research
Violent non-state actors (VNSAs) that use terrorism recruit a wide range of people and draw upon distinct features to entice them. They recruit men and women, the highly educated and undereducated, military veterans, and police officers. They sometimes reach these people with religious, racial, or ideological rhetoric. What do we know about VNSA’s global recruitment patterns? How widespread are different recruitment choices (e.g. military veterans), and which recruitment characteristics are likely to co-occur? Based on the 2019 National Strategy for Counterterrorism priorities 1.1, 3.2, and 3.3 to understand and establish prevention architecture to thwart terrorist radicalization and recruitment, this report …

Areca nut (AN) is a substance of abuse consumed by millions worldwide, in spite of established oral and systemic toxicities associated with its use. Previous research demonstrates methyl ester alkaloids in the AN, such as arecoline and guvacoline, exhibit mood-altering and toxicological effects. Nonetheless, their metabolism has not been fully elucidated in humans. In the present study, an HPLC-UV bioanalytical method was developed to evaluate the hydrolytic kinetics and clearance rates of arecoline and guvacoline in human liver microsomes (HLM) and cytosol (HLC). The bioassay was capable of quantifying arecoline and guvacoline (and carboxylate metabolites arecaidine and guvacine, respectively) with …

INTRODUCTION: Motoric cognitive risk (MCR) is a pre-dementia syndrome characterized by mobility and cognitive dysfunction. This study conducted a proteome-wide study of MCR and compared the proteomic signatures of MCR to that of mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
METHODS: Participants were classified as MCR using a memory questionnaire and 4-meter walk. We measured 4877 plasma proteins collected during late-life and midlife. Multivariable logistic regression related each protein to late-life MCR/MCI. MCR-associated proteins were replicated internally at midlife and in an external cohort.
RESULTS: Proteome-wide analysis (n = 4076) identified 25 MCR-associated proteins. Eight of these proteins remained associated with late-life MCR …

Executive Summary: Staff Education Project Prescription-Based Virtual Reality Solution For Chronic Pain Management, Adesina Adegoke
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The gap in practice addressed in this educational project was that the staff at the project site in central Massachusetts did not have adequate knowledge of how virtual reality (VR) technology can be a treatment alternative to pain medication. According to a survey in 2010, approximately 24% of the adult population of Massachusetts had chronic pain and may often depend on opioids for pain management. The problem question was: Does educating the mental health staff on VR technology as a viable alternative to opioid medication improve knowledge as evidenced from pre- to postsurvey? With this evidence-based educational project, I aimed …
Comfort And Knowledge As Predictors Of An Accurate Diagnosis Of Factitious Disorder Imposed On Another Among Counseling Professionals, Ari Gartin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This quantitative predictive study examined comfort and knowledge as predictors of an accurate Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (FDIA) diagnosis among master-level mental health counseling professionals in Washington State. This study also explores why researchers have struggled to develop a collective body of knowledge that can predict an accurate diagnosis of FDIA. The person-centered theory model guided this research. Data from the online platform SurveyMonkey was used to collect participant demographics, answers to the diagnostic questionnaire, and answers to the knowledge and comfort survey. All data collection took place between June and July 2024 and all data collected was electronically …

Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
While researchers have some recommendations for measuring gender identity in surveys based on research and other sources that are summarized in a series of working group and panel reports, we continue to refine our understanding and practices. Gender identity is usually measured in surveys using a categorical selection response format with a small number of response options (e.g., "female,""male,""nonbinary") and an open text response field to capture additional responses ("not listed, please tell us"). There is limited research guiding researchers on the use of other response formats. This study reports results from a between-subjects experiment embedded in a campus climate …

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common comorbidity of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The association of longitudinal RA disease activity with long-term kidney function has remained uncertain.
Method: We analysed a multicentre prospective RA registry in the USA from 2001 to 2022. The exposure was updated time-averaged Clinical Disease Activity Index (TA-CDAI) categories from study enrolment. The primary outcome was a longitudinal estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) change. Secondary outcomes included developments of CKD stage G3a (eGFR< 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) and stage G3b (eGFR< 45 mL/min/1.73 m2). Results were adjusted for relevant time-fixed and time-varying covariates.
Results: 31 129 patients (median age: 58.0 years, female: 76.3%, median eGFR: 90.7 mL/min/1.73 m2) contributed 234 973 visits and 146 778 person-years …

Background
Latina mothers have been especially affected by the pandemic and historically exhibit high rates of depression and anxiety. However, few longitudinal studies have assessed the effect of the pandemic on this vulnerable population. We hypothesized that COVID-19-related stressors would associate with psychological distress among Latina mothers across the first year of the pandemic.
Methods
We investigated COVID-19-related impact, stigma, and fears across two critical time points and changes in these measures in relation to changes in maternal anxiety and depression among mothers of Mexican descent living in Southern California (n=152). Surveys were administered within 5–16 weeks of …

Objective: Given the prevalence and significant burden of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), identifying early predictors of symptom development following trauma is critical. PTSD is a heterogeneous disorder comprised of distinct symptom clusters-reexperiencing, avoidance, negative mood, and hyperarousal-that contribute to the broad range of possible symptom profiles. Affective and attentional regulation processes, such as emotional conflict detection, are impaired in individuals with PTSD; however, the neural mechanisms underlying these alterations and their predictive utility for the development of PTSD symptoms remain unclear.
Method: Traumatic injury survivors (N = 49) without traumatic brain injury were recruited from the emergency department of …

Cancer research remains clinically unmet in many areas due to limited access to patient samples and the lack of reliable model systems that truly reflect human cancer biology. The emergence of patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells and engineered human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) has helped overcome these challenges, offering a versatile alternative platform for advancing cancer research. These hPSCs are already proving to be valuable models for studying specific cancer driver mutations, offering insights into cancer origins, pathogenesis, tumor heterogeneity, clonal evolution, and facilitating drug discovery and testing. This article reviews recent progress in utilizing hPSCs for clinically relevant cancer …
