The Decision-Makers: The Power Structure Of Dallas, Carol Estes Thometz Oct 1963

The Decision-Makers: The Power Structure Of Dallas, Carol Estes Thometz

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

In every community there are persons who "run" things, who make decisions and take action in the citizens' behalf. Who are they? How do they operate? Who spots the problems and decides which will be faced and which ignored? Who diagnoses and prescribes a solution? Elected officials? The bosses of business? of labor? Individuals or groups? Organizations or private cliques? And by what open or hidden processes are decisions reached?

Calcium Deficiency Symptoms In Burley Tobacco, Jones H. Smiley, Ira E. Massie, George Everette Oct 1963

Calcium Deficiency Symptoms In Burley Tobacco, Jones H. Smiley, Ira E. Massie, George Everette

Agronomy Notes

Calcium is an element required by all higher plants in relatively large quantities. It appears to be closely related to the formation of buds and flowers.

Calcium is usually available in sufficient quantities in Kentucky soils to produce a normal crop of tobacco. However, when certain varieties of burley tobacco commence to bloom and produce suckers, the tips of the calyx lobes of the flowers may turn brown and die and the edges of the small leaves of the suckers may be necrotic, resulting in irregularly shaped sucker leaves. In severe cases the apical bud may be killed. These calcium …

Agronomy Notes

This fall is an ideal time to apply needed agricultural limestone. Spreading equipment can get over the dry ground with less soil compaction, and limestone applied now can correct soil acidity during the winter months.

Determine Liming Needs On Tobacco Land This Fall, Jones H. Smiley, Harold F. Miller Aug 1963

Determine Liming Needs On Tobacco Land This Fall, Jones H. Smiley, Harold F. Miller

Agronomy Notes

There have been far too many reports of manganese toxicity in tobacco this season for a condition which is so easily corrected.

Manganese is one of the minor elements necessary for plant growth, but it is needed in very small amounts. When large amounts are taken up by a tobacco plant, light green or yellowish areas appear between the larger veins of the leaf. In severe cases the plant may be stunted or even die.

A Training And Conditioning Program For The High School Baseball Pitcher, Orville E. Johnson

Graduate Student Research Papers

The purpose of this study is to present in a clear and concise form the rudimentary mechanics of the game and an adaptable conditioning program for the high school baseball pitcher. While organizing the paper, the author hoped to gain further insight into the complexities of improving the young pitcher during the high school's short spring season.

A Study Of The Morphology And Systematics Of The Genera Polydrusus And Scythropus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Gary L. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this study were 1) to further clarify the status of the genera Polydrusus and Scythropus and 2) to redescribe and elucidate the morphology and distribution of the species of Scythropus in order to better facilitate their identification. Some 1650 specimens were used in the study and about 300 of these were critically examined for morphological variations of the head, beak, antennae, thorax, elytra, abdomen, integument, legs, genitalia, and eighth tergite and ninth segment of the male. Over one hundred genitalia were dissected and critically examined for good characters. The male genitalia were the most reliable single characters …

Pleistocene Mammals Of The Clear Creek Local Fauna, Denton County, Texas, Bob H. Slaughter, Ronald Ritchie Jun 1963

Pleistocene Mammals Of The Clear Creek Local Fauna, Denton County, Texas, Bob H. Slaughter, Ronald Ritchie

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

Mammalian fossils collected from the second terrace above Clear Creek in Denton County, Texas, are here described as the "Clear Creek local fauna." Ecological inferences drawn from current habits and ranges of the extant species, in addition to a radiocarbon date and certain stratigraphic data, suggest that the fauna belongs to the Sangamon interglacial interval (circa 25,000 B.P. to 40,000 B.P.)

Evaluation Of The Photometric Assay Method To Quantitate The Bactericidal Action Of Normal And Immune Rabbit Sera On Salmonella Pullorum, Alice Margaret Rahn Jun 1963

Evaluation Of The Photometric Assay Method To Quantitate The Bactericidal Action Of Normal And Immune Rabbit Sera On Salmonella Pullorum, Alice Margaret Rahn

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The bactericidal antibody test depends on the presence of sufficient complement, magnesium ions, and specific antibody to produce killing of certain gram negative bacilli. This study was undertaken to demonstrate whether or not Salmonella pullorum is an organism which is susceptible to this killing action.

Different amounts of test serum containing antibody, constant amounts of complement and magnesium saline diluent were placed together and held in a 37°C water bath for a one hour reaction time. During this interval, the antibody-complement system was given an opportunity to kill the susceptible bacteria. Then, a constant volume of nutrient broth was added …

The Relation Between Separate Refining And Mixed Refining On The Strength Properties Of Paper, Doug Bockstanz May 1963

The Relation Between Separate Refining And Mixed Refining On The Strength Properties Of Paper, Doug Bockstanz

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Object

The purpose of this work is to determine whether or not a significant difference in the strength characteristics of paper made from two pulps is obtained if the pulps are refined separately as compared to pulps refined together. The direction and magnitude of any difference is also desired.

The Severity Of Refiner Action Upon Pulp Strength Indexes, Thomas A. Wilson May 1963

The Severity Of Refiner Action Upon Pulp Strength Indexes, Thomas A. Wilson

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Using the ball mill as the refining tool and five different strength developing materials, an investigation was made of the mechanism of fiber strength development.

The various degrees of refining drasticness were obtained by using each of the five materials, and the burst and tear tests and burst times tear factor were used as the strength indexes for determining the various degrees of refining.

An Ecological Study Of The Bear Lake Littoral Zone, Utah-Idaho, Gar W. Workman May 1963

An Ecological Study Of The Bear Lake Littoral Zone, Utah-Idaho, Gar W. Workman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the past, several projects have been conducted at Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho, by the Utah State University through the Wildlife Resources Department, in conjunction with the Utah and Idaho fish and game departments, the Fish and Wildlife Service , and the National Science Foundation. These projects have dealt primarily with limnology, limnological techniques, fish life histories, fish movements, and bottom fauna in the pelagic and benthic areas of the lake. Subsequently, a littoral zone project was set up to study some of the ecological aspects of the shallow waters of Bear Lake, and some of the influences that this area …

Mineral Salt Movement In Roots As Affected By Various Factors, C. James Lovelace May 1963

Mineral Salt Movement In Roots As Affected By Various Factors, C. James Lovelace

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Normal healthy growth and development of plants necessitates that they have certain elements to fulfill their mineral requirements. Environmental conditions play an important part in fulfilling these needs. Should any of these essential elements be lacking, the plant displays certain symptoms. Although iron has been classified both as a micro-element and a macro-element, it is undoubtedly necessary for all plants to some extent.
